Form or Function
Badgerlicious and 2 others reacted to Fatboy40 for a topic
Going by your threads subject, "Form or Function", for me it's the exact phrase "Form Follows Function". I really don't care how I look in the eye's of others as long as I'm enjoying myself, feel comfortable, and at least get a few kills so that's my "function" and I'll take whatever "form" provides that. The financial problem is that there's a minimum you need to spend to achieve this. I'm not a trained soldier, we're not operating in Helmand, so I don't need to spend thousands on mock realism (I'd run around with a big pink dildo with a trigger if it fired accurately to 60m, got me lots of hits and was dirt cheap).3 points -

I buy what I think I like. i don’t care what you like. i tinker because I can’t help it. when it performs to the limits of my tinkering capabilities it’s generally the time when I realise whether I really like it or not and it stays or gets sold. I am happy with my 4 remaining rifs i don’t think I want a gbls das but if I do go that way the mws and my sorted socom ngrs would have to be culled to fund the purchase, I don’t think I can let either of them go. ive been through many brands and models to get to this point and these 4 do everything I need for the two sites I go to2 points -

Not forgetting the centre two of the m4 slots are a sleeve that can be removed and replaced with any other helikon insert that fits in (pistol or other mags). If you're after a multicam tmr I may be selling mine that I've used for 5 game days (send me a pm) as I need to decide in the next few days what to keep/sell as I've accumulated a lot of stuff.1 point -
Slight update with a torch. We'll headlight that fits quite nicely to my hat. Painted to look dirty rusted metal. One light coloured red so to signify dead in game(never got around to that for the last game) came out alright and should do the job. Have been repainting the shinguards to match the torso more for the look than anything. Probably need to varnish the lot to help it survive getting shot a bit1 point

My wife said to me last night that she had a bag of used clothes to give to the charity shop and can I take them up there for her. I said just throw them in bin it's easier. She said there were thousands of poor starving people in the world that would benefit from having them. Stupidly I said that anyone who can get into your clothes certainly ain't starving!! And that's why I can't make this Sundays game and why I'll possibly be walking with a limp! 🤕 Regards1 point

@Steveocee I ran it as an AEG as Phoenix don't knock down HPA users and AEG's can run at 370! Gives me a nice advantage over most AEG's as you'd expect them to be sub 350 as per everywhere else. Now DMR's are 450fps at Phoenix. My mate ran his MTW as a DMR and had a blast! I'm tempted to try DMR next time I'm there. However being a bushman, I got a good 20+ kills within 20m. I went invisible and hit a 10 kill streak. Had the other team moaning at eachother thinking they were getting team killed!! 🤣🤣1 point

Only in the reverse-snobbish sense of wanting to be clear that I'm not playing with a TM NGRS or small-bore-paintball-marker. I have thrown on a silencer just for looks a couple of times, but mostly because it was in the bag and idle hands are the speedsofter's devil's workshop. I'm strongly in the camp of play over pay, although I have made a couple of mistakes - I'm looking at you, AEP. Dropping a whopping £140 on the cheapest metal bodied Specna Arms Edge was uncharted territory for me, it was like the start of 2001 when the Monolith showed up.1 point

In this hobby (I'd argue it extends past it, but we'll stick with this hobby for now), everyone is a prick in some way, shape or form. Make peace with it and move on. The budget boys want to yell from the roof tops that they're keeping up for a third of the price (they aren't), the gucci gang think more expensive will always mean more good (it doesn't) and the folks that have a different RIF for every day of the week will question why you'd ever spend so much on one RIF when you could have bought 4 for that price (and never use any of them). Everyone has their own view and, albeit intentionally tongue in cheek (which seems to have been entirely missed courtesy of the interpretation of typed text), folks with a differing view point tend to fall in the category of prick... so for every person that agrees with you, there are at least two categories of people that think you're a prick. I guess my answer to the 'form or function' question is quite simply, both. And fortunately my personal preferences for what I like the look of line up with what I like the function of.1 point

being in category 3 doesn't necessarily mean elitist. i pretty much fit that category these days but i will openly admit that a lot of what's gone into a super shiny pew doesn't necessarily result in better performance and definitely doesn't stop you getting winged from the bushes by some kid with a battered rental g36. indeed it could arguably be worse, picking an e&l over a cyma to deck out doesn't result in better bb lobbing performance but it does mean a much heavier gun. of course that adds to feel, which kinda loops round to form rather than function. ultimately we all strike a balance between form and function, otherwise we'd all be running those hpa'd m4 pistol abominations with a barrel length described as "yes".1 point -
I'm a little from column A, a little from column B. I have a bunch of guns, some of them are cheap, some not so much. I do all my own teching (so far). I buy the guns I like the look of BUT they need to perform well for me (which is why I'm selling my bolty). I buy parts that work well and spend money where it will make the best impact. If it improves my day airsofting then it gets in, if not - out it goes.1 point

I'd say you're missing category 3, which is the one I'd tend to fit in which is a few RIFs which have had some money thrown at them to improve them (be that performance, reliability, or both). I guess I'd call it the "quality over quantity" elitist pricks. I have 3 'primaries'. An NGRS AR with the works done to it, an E&L AK with the works done to it and an MWS which has a new hop nub in it. Including mags and extra gubbins that's thrown on them they're roughly all valued equally, and what I use is based simply on what I fancy using. And I have 3 'secondaries'. A Glock 19 which is my most frequently 'taken out' one. A Glock 17 which I should probably sell on but won't and a Glock 34 which is used as a primary for CQB from time to time. I've got a CYMA AKSU I need to list on here at some point which was initially bought to be the base of the project that ended up being an E&L instead, and as mentioned about I'll probably move the G17 on. Outside of those I'm super content with what I have, and for the first time in perhaps ever when it comes to airsoft there is nothing I want in terms of RIFs or kit. It's all been bought and altered based on my prior experience of 'my favourites' over the years to fit the way I play and what I like the look of. I guess I've landed on 'I like what I like' and have stopped chasing things for no other reason than the 'high' of something fresh arriving at my door and posting pictures showing it off. Once you're only buying kit for you I feel it become a lot easier, I definitely fell into the trap of trying to impress others... being a bit older and wiser certainly helps.1 point -

Cr0-Magnon reacted to Impulse for a topic
Can we all just appreciate the sheer greatness of this phrase. On the topic of the thread though, I find myself in a weird middle ground of not fitting into either category. My approach is quality over quantity, so while my armoury is not that extensive and I have only ever sold one gun in the 16 years I've been playing, all of my guns have been tweaked and fine tuned by me to perform as well as they can. I generally don't have a monetary budget when working on guns, but most builds take months, or even years to perfect and get everything right as I'll save up from my paychecks until I feel I can afford the parts, and they'll usually be fairly premium. I have two VSRs and two m14s that have been tuned to be as silent as possible and have peak effective range, not maximum range; no point being able to shoot 90+m if you're only hitting 2 out of 10 shots! I have an NGRS for normal rifle skirmishing which has had a few tweaks, but then I also have a stock Cyma mp5k and spring shotty as backups, because they shoot fine for what I need them to be: secondary weapons carried alongside one of my more expensive, tweaked guns. Oh, I also have a whole host of pistols that I have tweaked to shoot better than most peoples' AEGs. For context, my GBBs shoot just as well as my mk23 because I both love pistols and tend to use mine more than the average airsofter because sniper with 30m MED or long, unwieldy 1J m14 aren't the best weapons for hide defense. When it comes to "looking cool", I definitely do things to my guns that don't make it better, but make it look cooler. Flashlights during skirmish days in woodland are useless, but they look cool. Suppressors on literally everything purely because they look cool, though on my HPA guns and my mk23 they're also essential for reducing the sound signature, so they're practical on those guns. And the biggest offender of all is the super cool rail handguard on my m21 that has nothing attached to it, doesn't fit as well as the stock plastic one and gets covered by a rifle wrap anyway. So why is it on there? Because when the rifle wrap isn't on it, it actually looks TOO cool and people come over just to tell me how cool it looks. I'm not joking, it's my most complimented gun by a country mile, but it's also my heaviest (particularly front-heaviest) and longest gun. Is it worth it to me? Yeah, because I'm going for a specific thing. I'm trying to go as stealthy as possible and really play that sniper/recon role where having silent weapons is super-duper helpful. To me, it's not about how many kills, but how I get them that makes me happy and get peak enjoyment from the hobby; that bewildered "where the flying f*** did that come from?" look is worth a hundred other kills, especially when they look directly at me and don't spot me. If I played more high-speed, I'd probably spend a lot less on guns because at that point the difference between 50 and 60m range is a second or two of running. It's also why I'm not tuning my mp5k or spring shotty and haven't tuned my NGRS as much as my long guns, as if I'm playing with those I'll play faster and more aggressive, where range isn't as much of a focus. I think both are valid approaches. I think where I get annoyed is where people get elitist about their approach, whether that's the cheap and cheerful crowd ridiculing the guy who comes in with his Crye BDUs and GBLS rifle, or the Crye milsim speshul farces looking down on the player with the plastic AK and mismatching camos.1 point -

It only takes 5.56 mags, or 5.45 ak ones if you flip them bullets (bbs really) up. I would go for a haley rig if I were you, it's more versatile than the TMR (or the multigun rig) as it takes 4 mags instead of 2/3. And you can still use it with 5.56 mags due to the mp2 inserts. wut? They look like steyr 5.56 mags1 point

Should be fine, there are no surprises in the G&Gs, and they don't have notably weak gearboxes. The thing is, you can do most those things to a 1.1J AEG and get most of the benefits. The only actual DMR things about it are the spring and locking to semi, and it's a matter of some debate whether this is worth the trade off. I'm enjoying my Specna Arms based DMR (until the gearbox inevitably cracks...) but that's shooting at 1.8J and even then it's not got a huge amount of extra range over an auto gun. I'm scrupulous about sticking to MEDs and one-in-the-air, although I know some DMR players are... less so. I'd suggest keeping the stock spring and selector plate handy in case you want to swap it back again. The one downside I'd point out to using the G&G is that it doesn't have a quick change spring.1 point

Define a "healthy" weight. Do you want to be stronger? Or fitter? Or just heavier? If it's a purely aesthetic issue that you don't like being skinny then maybe it's more of a self image/mental problem than a weight problem?1 point

I've made a DMR before, but not on a similar platform. Did mine to a TM m14 and was wholly disappointed, so when I HPA it (waiting in anticipation for that Hydra to arrive...), I'll be keeping it to 1.1J. I can't recommend Maple Leaf macaron rubbers enough. They're super good when paired with an omega nub it just feels unfair1 point

What's up with other places such as reddit?
Rogerborg reacted to Ragingrental for a topic
I guess americans does explain it well haha. It's just so weird honestly. I don't care that I bought a lot of nice parts. I can maybe get a boneyard VFC or other good M4 in the future and put them in it. It's just that people think you need the best parts to have a nice gun that bothers me. I also think people spend way too much time discussing about shit than actually playing the actual game like wtf? Sure talking about it's nice but some of these twats have never played airsoft but simply roleplay in their parents basement. I swear the people you actually meet while playing airsoft are nothing like the WANKERS you encounter on the internet. People often have repro gear or cheap guns but everyone gets out and plays. No elitism and everyone is included just like how they should be.1 point -
Reddit's just another social media, it kinda looks more like a forum style at a glance, but the format of comments with multiple branches vs the single line forum thread makes a big difference. Also it's all about upvote and award farming, just like FB and IG are about react farming. Both great big seas of essentially faceless and far-more-anonymous people making lots of much shorter and less substantial additions to each given thread. Also both are much more deeply infected with politics than any forum I've ever been on. Problem is you can get 'famous' and make money on social media, probably if you're big enough on reddit too (though I'm not on there much other than for stock market stuff) and that's never a good thing.1 point

Is your gun empty and the bad guy pretty damn close? F**k retaining the mag, drop it like it's hot, get the gun fed and do your best to live, think about picking the mag up if and when you have the chance. As distance and available cover increases you've got more time and opportunity to retain the empty during the reload process. With an exception to be noted momentarily, dropping empties has never been official UK doctrine afaik whether with rifle or pistol, even doing CQM for deployments (not that I've seen every service/unit's range SOPs by a long shot), but the fact is it's fast so do what you gotta do if that time comes is my stance - which for me it almost certainly never will but I sure hope I come through if it does. I don't know the details during the SLR days, but basic evolution of british ammo feeding the last 100 years (primary rifles only) has been Lee-Enfield 5rnd clips -> FAL 20 round mags -> RG 'disposable' paper thin aluminium 30 rounders -> HK Steel very-much-not-disposable 30 rounders -> Magpul 30rnd EMAGs. As mentioned we tried to copy the US in the 80s but bureaucracy caused an issue with the L85A1 and those cheap, weak mags were a large factor amongst the many problems that rifle had. The magazine is one of the most vital links in the chain of reliability for a firearm. Dump pouches have never really been the most popular thing for stashing empties for militaries anyway if you take a holistic look at things. I've never personally seen one that was standard issue for us, the yanks, canada or anyone in Europe, I'm sure they exist but I've never seen one on anyone on ex, in theatre or in a deployed picture anywhere. I'm quite sure there's various exceptions, but it's not the norm. They're pretty good for airsoft, they're good for just stashing 'stuff' you need to shove somewhere right that second, saw a good bit of use for 'SSE' in the middle east for some cooler blokes than me, but they have a lot of drawbacks and aren't all that necessary. I'd call them more a result of the 2000's explosion in more modernised and high-speed shooting courses available for civilians in the US and the gigantic growth in the tactical gear industry that was going on at that same time.1 point -
CO2 Mags for my GHK M4...... how do I fill them ??
rj1986 reacted to Chev Chelios for a topic
Its basically HPA without the tank and hose, but the best thing is it lets you keep the control manipulation the same. I can mag dump a direct filled Co2 mag 3 times with snow on the ground with 0 ROF cool downs. Only reason to pick a GHK over a TM (unless you have a real hard on for trigger feel) You can also run them on anything using the WA style system such as VFC, G&P ETC by adjusting the valves knocker (just filing it down a bit). Good vid on setting up a home fill station, makes using Co2 it super cheap. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0fkXxNQDhc1 point -

Sorry to hear this, and I do have some sympathy with TG, but you're the customer, you've paid them for a service, and you've got a broken item. I'd fire in without a moment's hesitation. Ignore whatever you've been saying directly to TG. Open a fresh PayPal dispute and just say that the item is completely non functional. Nothing else, no background, no "I used it for a bit and then it broke." If TG want to dump the history of your conversation in there, that's up to them, but you just stick to "Non functional, refund please." If PayPal don't resolve that in your favour, then you go on and do exactly the same thing with your credit or debit card issuer, and tell them to issue a chargeback against PayPal. Same process, just "non functional, seller refuses to fix." Best of luck, and hopefully it will be a simple fix. Worst case, you should be able to bin off the magic parts and just rewire it for a standard trigger, but then you're losing out on what you paid for.1 point
