So today I found enough time to jump on the MTB and go for a quick lunch ride - advantages of WFH - and Mr Garmin tells me I burned 787 calories, I've a HRM and those boys knows their stuff so I'd say that's pretty reasonable for an hour's ride. That's 'paid' for a chunk of tonight's fish and chips that a friend bought round and the beer I had with it, so I'm still under the 1640cal goal that I've got set on MFP. Today was a good day.2 points -

We've been over this several times, and I'm yet again going to have to point out, with reference to the actual wording of the legislation, that the VCRA (as opposed to the Firearms Act) does indeed say "looks like an actual gun", or words to that specific effect. It uses the word "actual" twice, ackchyually: "a firearm of an actual make or model of modern firearm (whether existing or discontinued)" and "something falling within a description which could be used for identifying, by reference to their appearance, the firearms falling within a category of actual modern firearms which, even though they include firearms of different makes or models (whether existing or discontinued) or both, all have the same or a similar appearance." https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/38/section/38 So, yes, this was a real modern firearm that existed for 5 minutes, and even though it's been discontinued, technically speaking if you made something that looked like it, then it would be a VCRA realistic imitation firearm. The real challenge would be persuading anyone to prosecute you for selling, importing, manufacturing, or modifying-into one. I'm not aware of anyone actually being prosecuted or convicted under VCRA 2006 S36, ever, but as always I would welcome seeing some case law.2 points

Noob Review: Red Alert, Berkshire
PureSilver reacted to noctu for a topic
Yesterday (27/6/21) I met up with some friends at Red Alert in Berkshire (https://redalertpaintball.co.uk/) for a bit of toy soldier action. They've attended the site a few times in the past, but it was my first time (and in fact my first time doing proper airsoft). The site costs 27.50 for general usage, but site membership (25 quid a year) gives you a 10% discount and a Red Alert patch. For rental players, it'll be 50 quid instead. The rental guns were all the same (an Ares Amoeba Mutant AMM9), with single high cap magazine. This used to include unlimited BBs, but due to people "taking the piss" and running back to the safe zone to refill a high cap magazine multiple times per game it now comes with a bottle of BBs instead. This is a bit better for social distancing purposes as well, as the previous fill method was essentially a single shared bucket. Absolutely no complaints with the gun, it had clearly been well looked after and shot well. The weather for most of the day was a warm 19-ish degrees, and very humid. Rain threatened for most of the day but didn't really pick up until about 4 in the afternoon. As far as I could tell, the player dressed as Tinky Winky only lasted one game in costume with this humidity. The site itself is 35 acres, mostly woodland but with a good variety of man made structures dotted around the place - I believe we used the majority of them across the day. There aren't too many drastic elevation changes, but half of the site is a large slope which is perfect for anyone that enjoys games that involve attacking up a hill. It's all very green at the moment, so away from the man made structures there were plenty of dense fern patches. I arrived at about 8:45 to a half full car park. There is a safe zone attached to the car park, but it's not the biggest, so the majority of players set up out of their cars on the day. For part of the day there was also a kid's paintball party taking place, but they had a separate area of the safe zone assigned to them and things were timed so that they didn't get too scared by the nasty airsofters. The main airsoft safety brief was given via megaphone in the car park, and was clear and concise and sprinkled with a little bit of humour. The site allows full auto, but only in three to five round bursts. No blind fire (obviously), no firing through gaps in structures smaller than an A4 sheet. I was a dirty rental so didn't have to worry about chrono, but on site chrono is mandatory and done with both .2's and the ammo you'll be firing. On .2's the limits are 350fps, 420 (or 425, the site is unclear) for DMRs with a 20m MED and 500 for bolt actions with a 30m MED. There's a dedicated chrono area, but I also saw some taking place on entry to the game areas. There are two site shops. The main site shop sells your standard attachments, BBs, patches, drinks and miscellaneous stuff, whilst the other is a second hand shop and had a good array of pre owned guns, clothing, and all sorts of goodies. A couple of guys from my group picked up some new (old) RIFs to use on the day - one of the guys that did this was a rental like me, but they happily shifted over the extra amount he'd paid for the rental to a membership instead. We had a few late entries - traffic on the M4 was particularly shite this weekend. The briefing was scheduled to take place at about 10 AM, and the morning's games followed. Games: Teams are left arm yellow/right arm red. We were on yellow. First game was a warm up game slated to last 30 minutes, with a fairly standard 3 point Domination game. This took place across three game areas - the Town, Bridge and Village. The Town is, as the name suggests, an area of many structures and old cars. The town features a large "Embassy" building that could provide some good CQB, the Bridge is, er, a bridge over a river, and the village... I didn't actually get down to the village end in this game but I'm willing to bet it involves some structures. Most of my time was spent defending the Embassy as it had a clear view over the town's capture point, but the enemy team didn't push it and just shot at it from the bushes instead. Game finished, everyone tramped back to the car park to reload and mill around for a while. The second and third games were "D-Day", which was a "Rush" type game. The attacking team initially spawned at a landing craft in a wet area at the bottom of the site's main hill. The attackers had to push up through a series of bunkers and then take a man made metal fort at the top, with infinite lives. The defenders had one life per bunker spawn, and two at the fort. As the attackers took bunkers their spawn moved up with them. The game ended when the fort was clear of defenders. There was a 45 minute time limit for this game. This is unsurprisingly a tough game for the attackers, especially with the slogging up and down the hill from spawn on being hit. Our team attacked first and finished in 30 minutes, no doubt helped by our team's LMG who fired off about a few thousand rounds in this game alone. After the second game finished, everyone tramped back to the car park to reload and mill around for a while. There was some grumbling about being hungry as by this time it was about 12:30 and the smell of lunch was in the air, but we went back out to do our team's D-Day defence first. The food should have been a good incentive for the attacking team to push through quickly (we did consider just dying so we could eat), but they completed in 35 minutes so the yellow team won overall. Game finished, everyone tramped back to the car park to reload and mill around for a while and finally eat at about 2. Lunch! The food was decent - there was a big pan of curry on the go, and burgers & veggie burgers were available. During the briefing earlier in the day they'd also checked for any dietary requirements that needed catering for. Lunch took around 45 minutes, either by design or the fact the queue for the curry went all the way through the safe zone and out into the car park. The car park thinned out slightly before the start of afternoon play as the sky had threatened to do that rain thing. The afternoon's game was a game of "Follow the Colours", which was effectively just a pair of opposing moving spawns. Every time someone on the defending team died their spawn (a marshal with a hat on) would take two steps towards their end of the field, whilst the spawn for the attacking team would move up to be in line with the rearmost attacker. Once the defending spawn reached the end of the play area it was removed (the marshal took his hat off). The play area for this game was a long, curving banana rectangle that lead from an area of woodland, through the town, down a hill and to a radio tower. The defenders initially spawned on the near end of the town to the attacker. I believe this game was meant to take 45 minutes each way. This game mode had a few issues, partly due to player behaviour. The intention was clearly that the defending team would move forward from their spawn and try to prevent the attackers from advancing in the woodland area before the town, but they... didn't. Instead, they all fell back into the town area behind their spawn and let the attackers claim nearly a third of the game area right from the get go. I believe the marshal that represented their spawn chose to skip back a few steps at this point! Pushing into the town was hard work as by this time of afternoon the "short bursts" rule for full auto appeared to have been entirely forgotten. A number of the defenders were lying behind clumps of bushes and just filling the air with plastic in the general direction of the attackers, through more bushes (aside from one bloke who was doing it by poking his gun out through the bars of the "jail" in the town and firing merrily away. Eventually, someone got a grenade in there for him.). Because of the initial push by the attackers being uncontested, the spawns ended up so close to each other that the attackers had to pause and have their spawn move temporarily into cover to prevent spawning players getting shot straight away. By this time the defender's spawn was on a track that cut through the whole game zone; we were told not to shoot players on the track as they were dead and walking back to spawn, but they were also shooting at us at the same time so something had clearly got lost in translation somewhere. I found one red player had merrily walked all the way up the track, cut into the game zone, and started shooting into our spawn from behind, but when confronted said "oh no I'm going to the safe zone". The yellow team cleared the embassy about five times, but I'm not convinced that after the first time there were any players other than yellow in it. The attacking team eventually pushed the defenders back far enough and took the point. Round one of the game finished, everyone tramped back to the car park to reload and mill around for a while before switching sides. By this point the rain had started in earnest and there were quite a few people from the attacking team feeling grumpy about taking so much full auto fire at close range. The marshals were having a chat about it when I walked past, though I'm not sure if there was any resolution. It was about 4PM at this point and we'd played 4 games (at least, some of us had, given the late arrivals). The rest of my group decided to call it a day, and by all appearances so did a number of other players from the yellow team. Apparently the red team won the last game, but by that time we were gone. (totally not stealing the below format here) Good The team of marshals were great, very approachable and friendly but not averse to taking someone aside for a quick chat. Rentals were high quality and shot in the direction the gun was pointed. Good variety of stuff on sale in the shops. Food - a curry is always a good thing in my books, and a few people proclaimed it good enough that they'd go back for seconds. The clientele were a mix of age ranges from the young to the, er, grizzled. About ten were rentals. In the most part they were very friendly (the guy with the LMG let me hold his very large and very heavy weapon), but see hit taking below. The playing area had a good amount of man made structures, trenches, bunkers, etc. to get involved with along with the normal woodland features. Average Access road is bumpy sand/gravel to a spacious car park. It's well sign posted and there's a 5mph limit for a reason - some of the divots in the access road are quite deep. Toilets were a couple of portaloos, one male, one female. They were regularly wiped down and seemed in good enough state. Turn around time wasn't fantastic, on average we'd be in the car park for 20 minutes between games and then sat around in the game zone for another ten to fifteen minutes waiting for the stragglers to turn up. Meh Hit taking from a few people. Over the course of two games I heard one player in particular being complained about, by experienced players, with the complaint progressing from "I had to mag dump the twunt to get him to admit it" in the first instance to "we both had to do it this time" in the second. Few instances of full autoing blindly through bushes and through small gaps. Injury of the day In the last game we played Me Mate Dave took a burst of full auto to the face at very close range and now has a very impressive welt on the inside edge of the bridge of his nose, about half an inch from his eye. He says he'll be buying full goggles rather than shooting glasses style for next time. End In conclusion, I definitely had a fun time and would happily go back (also, UKARA reasons), but some of my group didn't enjoy it quite as much as usual. This probably wasn't helped by the excessive humidity at the start of the day and the drizzle at the end, but that's English weather for you.1 point -

The standard part is not a separately available item, and for a while www.airsoftworld.net had various AAP-01 parts for sale from disassembled ones but I never saw the selector part. An after-market one may be an option, for example... https://www.airsoftworld.net/imperial-custom-precision-action-army-aap-01-qfs-quick-fire-selector.html ... but I've no idea what of the original mechanism it still requires. Personally I find it intriguing that someone chose to swap in a 3D printed part to lock it to semi, why would you do that if you use it just as a pistol, so maybe at some point they upgraded it to act as a DMR and never fully changed it back?1 point -
No. For VCRA purposes an airsoft pistol that looked like that would still qualify as an IF. The legislation does not define a RIF as ‘looks like an actual gun’ but more of ‘looks like a gun to Joe Bloggs, unless it’s below a size, too old a design or >50% of specified bright colours’ No matter what colour it is the genuine lego style pistol is a firearm, and a lookalike airsoft pistol would be an IF Chavvy McChavface doesn’t want a real gun to look like a toy, he wants it to look like a gun and intimidate so that he doesn’t actually have to shoot the guy behind the till for a few hundred pounds1 point

Gun That Looks Like Lego, Theoretical VCRA Impact?
Rogerborg reacted to Adolf Hamster for a topic
haven't they already folded to lego's lawyers? the vrca seems to be more about "looks like a gun" than anything else, and that's to average joe public rather than anyone who's enough of a gun nerd to go "well akshually......". there's already precedent for real guns that would (in an airsoft version) qualify as vrca exempt (basically everything 3-gun) and likewise airsoft pews that would convince joe public (eg the aps uar) this is neither the first nor last bad pun to come out of america anyway.1 point -

As a primarily wood player I will make a point of using my pistols. I carry at least three of the buggers for the extra weight I am getting use out of then. AEP wise the zv61 was the only one I found useable. After a Gbb an mp7 was just so very meh. if you don't want a gas back up, I'll give another vote for an MP5k.1 point

Personally I've always favoured sites that insist on a modicum of realism when it comes to weapon classes, such as box mags only on genuine support guns, dmr's being single shot long guns, although the particular models can be open to interpretation given the number of nations that probably deploy weapon systems other than ar or ak based guns, & obviously snipers being just that, based upon real world sniper platforms. Only if the above criteria are met, should users then up the FPS to site & class limits. & as @BigStew has pointed out, the cyma M14 is an awesome base for a dmr, lotta bang for your bucks👍1 point

You can get the US issued parkas on eBay UK, they need a bit of tailoring to be vaguely practical for anything other than their original purposes though. If you don't mind importing there's a fair few brands that make shirts and combat shirts in the pattern now.1 point

Huge no. AEPs have a super situational usage. That is up close and to being super duper quiet. Maybe in an arctic winter If you try and build an AEP to provide the same performance as an GBB, it will explode and die very quickly. Your box AEP will fire at around 240-260 fps. Your out of the box GBB on green gas 320-350.1 point

Was simply referring to the descriptive title of DMR not the application as OP asked for a base gun for a DMR build , which by recognized definition is a semi-automatic long arm firing a standard issue caliber round(5.56/7.62 etc) not a bolt action which on the whole use a none standard specialist caliber(.338 Lapua for example)round . We’re Just moving in to the realms of silly semantics when we start talking about a pistol being a DMR in airsoft , it’s like claiming a HPA’ed drum mag on a hi-capa makes it a support gun ? Only trying to keep OP on the right track .👍1 point

no, because gbb's are more fun for the rare occasion the majority of them make it out of their holsters on the field. co2 is great in principle, but the venn diagram of people who claim on internet forums that they're reliable, and people who i've seen on the field with reliable co2 pistols, does not overlap. perhaps they're just not using the right type of bulb/storing it with/without the bulbs in (delete as appropriate i've heard of and tried both), are using too much/too little silicone etc etc. or perhaps 800+psi & airsoft *ahem* "quality" isn't a mix that works out well. nbb has its place, certainly it's a much cheaper option than hpa if mouse-fart levels of quiet are a priority for you. personally not my cup of tea.1 point -

I love using pistols, even in woodland games. Getting kills with them is just so entertaining. I have several including 2 x ASG P-09's, which even in cold weather shoot very reliably for 4-5 mags at around 330fps. However in hot weather they can be a bit too powerful, so I use my Umarex Glock 19X or one of the TM's. I've tried AEP's in the past, even including the newest CYMA with MOSFET and I hated it. When I'm in close and split seconds count, I don't want my pistol whirring up to fire when I pull the trigger before shooting a measily 220fps. Show me a brand new design which fires at least 300fps and shoots almost instantly.1 point -
Well, they do work, and I have got hits with one (and some people even called them!). But as @Fatboy40 said, the trigger response is slowwww, you can actually hear them winding up on semi. I did get significantly better response when I shoehorned in a 1200mAh 25/50C lipo, full size Deans, and fatter wiring from battery through to motor. No mosfet, but those just take the trigger contact resistance out of the equation. I say better, but it'll still be out-gun-slung by anything except the limpest of AEGs. It was a fun experiment, as was playing around with the spring as the gearboxes are a wonder to behold. But the tiny motor and cylinder always limit what you can achieve with them. But... they do work.1 point
-
Usual answer, only get an AEP after you've tried one and liked it. They're heavy, bulky things with fat grips, the semi response isn't great even on a lipo, and sub 0.4J makes them suitable only for CQB or going into structures. I've sunk a fair bit of of time and money into my CM.123 (lipo, rewire, bearings, heavier spring, trying to sort the air seal) but never got above 0.5J, or a trigger response close to that of a GBB, and, crucially, there's none of the blowback fun factor. So now I just strap my Galaxy MP5K to a leg panel and have something that's light enough to forget about but shoots 1J+ and is just about usable as a woodland primary while having most of the advantages of a pistol, and it's also upgradeable with AEG parts. Sadly, stocking is patchy, and we can only buy what we can buy. But on that, I'd be surprised if you can find a mosfet CYMA for close to £50 and in stock. Any hints as to where?1 point

Op-tac the Kingdom 27th June
TheFull9 reacted to Jacob Wright for a topic
Myself and some of the team recently attended Op-Tacs ‘The Kingdom’ rural site in Cheadle. I thought I’d write up a review as I’ve never really heard of it before, and only came to know of the site via their Instagram page. The Kingdom is one of two sites used by Op-Tac, and is advertised as the Midlands “largest Airsoft venue” with 200 acres of skirmishable woodland, interspersed with tracks, paths, (lots of) hills and plenty of trees. The site is an old Quarry, actually known as ‘Huntley Wood’ and used an activity centre and venue for other outdoor events. On-site camping is advertised but be warned, this is only for their full weekend events. I’ll touch on this at the end. Green fees are £35 for non-members, with a £10 deposit payable in advance. An extra £5 will get you lunch and there is a very limited on-site shop, more on this later. Chrono limits are fairly standard, 350fps for AEG/HPA/GBB, 450fps for a DMR and 500fps for a bolt action rifle. You are asked to chrono with a 0.2g BB, and a point to note is that this is a biodegradable BB only site. There weren’t any toilets as theirs have gone missing, but Rob (Head Marshal) explained they will be back in place for the next game day. On our arrival there was a marshal at the gate who directed us to the car park. We were on site at 0800, along with about 10-15 other cars. There is currently no safe zone in use so everybody is asked to set up from their cars which was not an issue as it was a nice day. Registration took a little while due to having to walk to the opposite end of the car park to get a signal on their card machine. All 4 of us took up the £5 lunch option which was a chicken and stuffing roll and a drink. There is no escaping the fact that we waited about 2 hours for the safety brief, with chrono opened about 45 minutes before that. It was a long time of standing about just waiting, and eventually we were called to gather for the safety brief. This was another half an hour, probably one of the more in depth briefings I’ve had at a skirmish as it included reading out parts of the risk assessment and control measures. This isn’t a dig at them for doing so, at the end of the day it does make people aware of the risks involved. Once the briefing finished a scenario was explained and we were split into our two teams. Bands vs Non-bands, one half as a NATO SF unit and the other as a Russian SF unit. Initially we ‘Russians’ would be defending a hostage and falling back through two village areas and then to the hilltop fort. Fairly straightforward, defenders could be re-gened by a medic after their first hit and would then have to go to a fixed regen point after the following two. They would then have to wait in the next fall back area. Attackers had unlimited lives. As newbies to the site we followed the advice of some regular players and set ourselves up on a ridge line inside the trees. As the attackers advanced we were able to hold them off quite easily, as although they would pick a few of us off they never managed to completely push through our position. In the end the Marshals made the decision to ‘JDAM’ all of us defenders and make us move to the next fallback positions so that the attackers could finally advance! The ‘villages’ consisted of fairly standard airsoft barricades made of wooden crates, pallets and scrim netting. The hilltop fort was made up of 2 Hesco bunkers and a large number of mounds which offered good fire positions. Either side of the fort were steep drops down to valleys completely filled with trees and very loose ground. As defenders we became aware of a sniper team who had almost completely flanked around us, so we dispatched them by rolling grenades down the slopes; very effective. Once the hill was captured we broke for lunch. We didn’t feel that the roll and bottle of water were quite worth the £5, but there were enough for everybody to have two each so this softened it a little bit. I also took this opportunity to check out the on-site shop. It did seem a bit pricey with a bag of 3300 0.28 BB’s being £19.99 and TAG AFG-6 grenades at £12.95 each so I was glad we’d brought our own. After lunch it was a simple reversal of the game before. We attacked and pretty swiftly rolled through the enemy positions. They held us up at points but we were able to keep up the momentum well and people operated well as a team. Throughout the entire day I can think of only one time when I heard somebody complain about hit-taking, with lots of calls of ‘good shot’ or ‘well played’. Our little team decided to carry out an extreme flank of the hilltop fort, which meant we advanced on it through thick trees, ferns and up some of the steepest hills I’ve come across in Airsoft. As we moved on the fort two of us had to physically crawl up a slope to engage the defenders with pistols and grenades, which was absolute great fun and I only wish I’d been able to record it. When this game was over it was about 3, most people were absolutely knackered and decided to call it a day, but about 15 of us remained to play a quick ‘infection’ type game which lasted about 20 minutes but was good fun. All in all, as a team we agreed that we had a really enjoyable day. Sportsmanship was second to none, with only one incident of grumbling which we heard. There was a lot of full-auto fire but its a big open rural site with lots of natural cover so wasn’t an issue. We would really like to visit again for one of their Milsim weekenders and see how the gameplay differs when more of the site is used as we only saw a fraction of it. The area we used was big enough for the amount of players present, with plenty of different sections to fight through so the entire team didn’t get stuck in one place. On the camping, we had attempted to contact Op-Tac by Instagram, email and then phone to see if we could stay on the Saturday night to avoid a 2 and a half hour drive on the Sunday morning. We didn’t hear anything from them but as it was advertised we decided to bite the bullet and turn up on the Saturday night anyway. We were met with a locked gate, and following an series of phone calls ended up staying at a local campsite (Hales Hall) which at £20 a car and having really good facilities we couldn’t complain about. After speaking with Rob the next day he explained that camping is only available at their weekend events, and their website will be amended as necessary. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this site to anyone, just be warned that the hills are steep and I was shattered the next day! Fighting light is key!1 point -
