  1. Only played half the day today as my atrial fibrillation (at least that's what the doctors think it is) played up on Friday so I decided to keep it light today so I don't wake up tomorrow with palpitations. Hopefully on the road to sorting that, but anyway... Got there a little later than usual, but set up both the m40a5 and the m14, chronoing both immediately. M40 was a crisp 2J and the m14 was 1J. Perfect. Then while my friend was setting up his guns it started absolutely tipping it down, so I hurriedly got everything back into the car. It wasn't meant to rain today and fortunately it only lasted for about 45 mins or so. I got all my kit together and decided to run the m40a5 with the HK45 as my sidearm and my newly acquired and set up TM bodyguard pistol in a shoulder holster. With the Hadron TDC upper and a little suppressor, it was absolutely tiny but it was sending .32s out to 50m relatively accurately (though I don't think I'd be going for many 50m shots with it) and was nice and quiet; not quite as quiet as the mk23 as the suppressor is tiny by comparison, but considering how massive the mk23 is and how small the bodyguard pistol is I was more than happy as it was a lot easier to carry. Super impressed for such a little and honestly pretty damn cheap pistol. First game wasn't one I was too fond of. It was a timed attack and defence on one of the bases, but defenders weren't allowed more than 20m from the base, which severely limited my options as running something with an MED at Worthing at the moment is a bit of a challenge and it didn't really afford me any positions I could take and use my bolt action well. We attacked first and the writing was on the wall; our team was very timid. Nobody was pushing. I wasn't able to really impact the game much either with how the sight lines were around this base, but we eventually cleared it out and took it. Then we swapped sides. I took a position concealed under a holly bush and managed to take out a bunch of the attackers on the way in, but not being able to move too far from the base means I was eventually flanked and taken out when someone almost stepped on me while I was incredibly fogged up thanks to the earlier rainfall making all the bushes super humid. Whoever said you need a ghillie to be invisible anyway Second game came around and... I really enjoyed it. Usually we do a 3-base domination, but this time they did a 5-base domination and I think it worked well. I would've used some other bases, as 4 of the bases were very close together, but having to spread across 5 bases was far better than 3. It was in this game where I feel I did my best work, crawling into a position, setting up my rifle to fire and taking out a fully ghillied enemy sniper team and 2 of their team mates as one of them was directly observing the area I was crawling through. Slow deliberate movements, never silhouetting myself and finally a good bit of marksmanship really helped and it felt so good to achieve, since I play with the short-sleeve handicap during the summer; no ghillie, just an uncrafted cobra hood over a plain black short sleeved t-shirt. I'm not exactly covered in camo! From there I held that position, taking out the sniper as he returned from respawn as well as a whole host of other people on the enemy team who wanted to use that position. It's games like this that remind me why I love sniping. We then switched sides, taking me to the side I was far more familiar with and I immediately went and took a position overlooking a path into the area with the bases. I completely shut down that side of the site with the help of another forum-goer here until he got friendly fired by trigger-happy teammates (who I've forgotten the name of sorry ) and eventually the enemy team just completely abandoned their efforts there, so while the start of the game was eventful, the end saw me barely taking a single shot. I'm glad I refilled my mags before this game as I burned through 2 of my 3 m700 mags in this game, so I would've run out of ammo if I hadn't. Across these two games, I think I took out the enemy team's full ghillie pair about half a dozen times without them even seeing me once. I definitely feel like I was on point for these games. Also, it seems I was finally caught on camera, so you can see what I mean by "I'm not in a ghillie right now" ? At lunch I decided to call it, though I heard it was a complete slaughter in the afternoon with our team getting absolutely pantsed by the enemy team. Exercise is what sets off my heart palpitations, so after the morning I felt I didn't want to push it. Furthermore the game after lunch was in a super dense part of the site that is basically a CQB killhouse, but with thick bushes for walls instead of... walls. Wasn't going in there with a 30m MED (you're lucky to get 15m shots in there), so I stayed back in the safe zone. Tweaked the m40a5 a little as it was overhopping, but I think I may try a new hop rubber. Now that the X-range is bedded in it's hopping .45s a bit too much, so I'm going to pick up one of the new Maple Leaf silicone rubbers (the 2023 ones) and stick a 60 degree in. Fingers crossed it works out, but we'll find out next game day as I don't exactly have a 75m range to try it out on living in Brighton. Also continue to be impressed with the King Arms adjustable m700 bolt. It's super consistent and hasn't let me down once. After the m40a5, I took my new AAP onto the range to get the hop dialled in; I saw one for sale on ammo drop on sale for about £70 and I wanted to do a modern ruger .22 upper to go alongside my old fashioned one. Set that up and was happy with the performance, but I'm not a huge fan on the magazines as I feel they're not that gas efficient but further testing is required there. Anyway, all in all it was a great day. After the brief downpour in the morning it was sunny for most of the day which helped dry the site out a little and reduce the humidity a little so after the first game I wasn't fogging up much at all. Downside is that I'm almost certainly going to have to skip the upcoming Vietnam game at Gunman Eversley (sorry @Tactical Pith Helmet but I won't be there. The others I usually go with should be though! I think one of the others can't make it either so our contingent won't be in attendance) as I'm not going to go camping in the middle of the woods with any risk of atrial fibrillation rearing its ugly head.

  3. I did think paintball might be more suited to the curved barrel thing, intuitively it would seem less strenuous on the round and i'd have assumed an airsoft style hop might results in bursting rounds if its set too tight. Plus curved barrel would only suit one particular weight/energy combination which wouldn't be popular in airsoft given people want to make dmr's out of basically everything, change hop weights on a whim etc.

My science knowledge is misty as it goes back many decades - and also my barrel / projectile experience is with paintballs, which have the added effect of distortion under pressure whilst inside the barrel All the theories mentioned ring true with my recollection & experience, particularly the bent barrel which seems very wrong at first but effective when right (this was the Tippmann flatline) it does exactly as per the theory - drag in the curve causes backspin Next we had the Apex tip which is pretty much the same thing as an airsoft hop An adjustable rubber element gives backspin, but the tip can also be rotated to change the angle of the backspin (spoiler in the following video but he rated it as ‘it sucks’ - it does give backspin and additional range, but can impact on consistency - I have a team mate who puts in all the practice, he was an apex ninja and as a result could place a ball where he wanted it to go - though this was courtesy of numerous factors with the Apex as just one of them to adjust the spin) https://youtu.be/Vfgi_AwdTR8 Flatlines and Apexes have had their day, some will still use them, but most will go for bore matching a barrel / insert with the ball - and everyone has a different preference that they swear by of bore match, overbore or under bore Still to add are the consistency of the gun itself to reliably send the ball out of the chamber, and the length of the barrel which must be long enough to allow the ball to accelerate but not so long that any drag/bounce along the barrel is so much that it loses the energy that was gained in acceleration Consistency and practice are key - consistency gives you a reliable benchmark and practice let’s you first understand the combined effects and fine tune each in turn

  5. I did suspect basically this: Although i've never really dug into it enough to find out conclusively. The issue i have with that as an explanation is that whilst the bb is in the barrel, the airflow past it will be inverted so the magnus effect would be pulling it down against the bottom of the bore, and that additional airflow around the bb would magnify this effect, ie that it would rattle in a tightbore and run along the bottom of a widebore. I did for a while contemplate the idea of an intentionally curved barrel, putting a slight radius along its length to force the bb to roll along the top surface which would help add a little more spin (although likely still need a hop for adjustability) but more importantly mean that the bb would consistently be riding along one surface. Ultimately though in practical terms the trick is getting a pew consistent enough to even be able to notice these sorts of minutia, and that generally the main boost from a better quality barrel is not in its nominal diameter but in how consistent that diameter is along its length, how straight it is and how good the internal surface finish is.

  8. This morning, the lad and I once again set off for Airsoft Plantation, one of our regular sites. The morning started with a game in which we (red team) had to assault across the mortar pits to reach a siren which was located on the far side in front of one of the landing craft. The attacking team had infinite regens on a marshal, while the defenders had two lives. Assaulting out of the woods, the big surprise was that the double decker bus had moved from the centre of the mortar pits to the edge nearest the woods; apparently, this is in preparation for their upcoming two-dayer over the bank holiday weekend and completely changed the dynamics of fighting in that area. We were badly held up trying to get out of the woods, but eventually wore the enemy down, forcing our way through the mortar pits and setting off the siren. The game was then switched round and we realised why it had taken us so long to break out; shooting fish in a barrel came to mind. After being hit, I moved back to a position in our left rear, where the enemy were starting to apply pressure after engaging in a wide flanking manoeuvre. We held them up for a while, but they eventually reached the siren, taking one minute longer than we had. Unfortunately, during this game, one of the lad's BFGs went missing after he had used it in a very well defined area; when he went to recover it 3-4 minutes later, it had vanished, After the game, we searched for it, but could not find it. After a break to mag up, play switched to the other end of the site in a game wherein the attackers had to transport a stretcher from the far end of the woods to the wobbly bridge and kill house; once they had arrived there, a casualty had to be placed on the stretcher with an band applied to each limb and then transported via the Border to the town hall in the village. Attackers again respawned on a marshal, while defenders had one life at each of the wobbly bridge, the border and the village. If the casualty was hit, they had to leave the stretcher and a new casualty had to don the bands and be transported forward. The lad and I, along with several other players, occupied the ditch on the far right of the site, working well as a team and taking out a lot of attackers in the light woodland. Eventually, my rifle received a hit from a sniper rifle or DMR; calling a gun hit, I drew my pistol, only to be hit again by fire from my left, sending me back towards the border, where I settled into a favourite position and waited for the enemy, who arrived rather more rapidly than expected. I took out a bunch who were exposed to my right and then another group who appeared in the same place; while I was doing this, a fellow defender to my front fell gallantly when faced by overwhelming numbers and I found myself facing a lot of enemies to my front and right flank. After holding them back for a few minutes, I was hit and went back to the village, where an unfortunate friendly fire incident ended my participation in the game. I decided to have another look for the lad's grenade and was later joined by him; we still could not find it. We met an enemy player who had been there when it was lost and he stated that he had seen it in on the grass in clear view. As this was now lunchtime, we mentioned the grenade to the site owner; at the end of the afternoon briefing, he mentioned it and stated that whoever had picked it up should hand it in at the site shop/office. A player did so, claiming that he had picked it up (why?) and put it in his dump pouch, but had then completely forgotten about it and then spent one and half games and all of lunchtime completely oblivious to having a large and heavy BFG banging against his hip (yeah, right!). Anyway, the important thing was that the lad got his BFG back. After lunch, the stretcher game was reversed; a group of us, including the lad and I, assaulted the ditch that we had defended earlier, driving the enemy out in fine style. We then attacked the border, which is always difficult as it is a very strong position, but eventually broke through after a fierce fight against a superb defence; poison gas and flash bangs were much used. Rolling up to the village, we stormed it en masse, getting our casualty to the town hall more quickly than the enemy had. After this, the final game saw a return to the mortar pits, with both sides attacking across them to set off a buzzer at the enemy's start point. All players had two lives and my participation was somewhat limited as my two lives each passed quickly. Despite the grenade incident, it was a really good day, with us running some of our less used weapons. AP already has a 30m minimum engagement distance for full auto and, as last week, there seemed to be an effort to persuade players to use semi all the time, which is something that I applaud; it makes play so much more interesting. Next weekend, we are probably going to an outdoor CQB site that is completely new to us. Ran my one today for the first time, after hearing back from SWIT airsoft that they are going to order replacement parts for the bits that border force broke, rather than requiring me to ship the gun back to them as I thought they might ask. Ran mine with the gas box mag, but found that the clip was rather tight and needed adjustment to allow the box to fit without forcing it on. Firing the gun drew quite a lot of admiring looks and compliments, particularly with the added features of a suppressor with a smoke generator and a tracer unit fitted. I will be stripping it down and giving it a good clean and lubrication over the next couple of days. One issue i do need to look at is perhaps replacing the nozzle as it was firing initially at 1.5j on .28s and VORSK gas. Regassed with nuprol 2.0 and fired a few mags through it and the power dropped down to just below the limit, and I rechronoed a couple of times through the day and it remained below the limit but too close for comfort. One other issue I need to work out... what's the best way to empy the gas tanks between game days? As unlike a standard mag, there's no release valve to manually vent the excess gas Not Had that issue with my one (yet), but it will be keeping an eye on it.

    BB weights...

Curved barrels, or LRBs (Long Range Barrels) were a thing before hop up existed. Enthusiastic players would bend the last third of the barrel a few degrees in order to impart some kind of backspin. People have been debating where the BB flies in the barrel for years at this point. Over on the American forums, we actually have members working on a glass barrel project. On examination of the fluid dynamics, it seems that no proper quality airsoft BBs contact the top of the barrel or rattle around, but instead float through the barrel, closer to the top but not touching. Bore size is practically irrelevant. The people who say the BB rattles around in some bores and skids or floats in others are completely ignorant of how little the difference actually is between these barrel bores we care so much about. I will also cite that BBs rattling or skidding down a barrel produces a very distinct, noticeable sound that is lacking when you shoot your airsoft gun, even upside down. Naturally, air will push and flow around the BB due to its spherical shape. The proponents of the skid theory, where the BB rides along the top, propose that the Magnus effect forces the BB to “hop” off the hop patch and cling to the top of the barrel. However, this does not make any sense, as the Magnus effect does not become stronger than the forward velocity of the BB until long after it has left the barrel (overhop), even using extremely short barrels, which should theoretically prove this. I am not a physicist either, but having spent time both talking to people smarter than I, and researching fluid dynamics, I believe the most logical explanation is that the BB does ride closer to the top of the barrel, because of a negative pressure cushion created by the backspin (Magnus effect), but does not touch, because of air naturally flowing between the BB and the barrel and causing an opposing cushion. For some excellent practical evidence, Google Tanio Koba Twist barrels. They were airsoft barrels with rifling, tuned for 1J, that spin the air around the BB. Because they have cut grooves along the top, yet shoot normally, they prove that the BB does not ride along the top or rattle around,

Given that a hop rubber with a bit of silicon lube on it loses its ability to impart backspin, I'd say the effect of a BB touching the sides of a clean polished barrel will be fairly negligible. But as you say it's really all guesswork with no evidence. The makers of wide bore barrels claim great things, but I've watched a video where testing showed they tended to be less accurate. Too many variables in play, and not enough science, so far. (I daydreamed of a glass barrel so someone could actually film the BB traveling along, but I suspect in reality even that would effectively be impossible due to the realities of manufacturing difficulties and costs, refraction affecting observation etc)

To my simple mind, a BB that so much as touches the barrel once it's been through the hop would emerge with no, or random, backspin. I'd wonder on what evidentiary basis these claims are being made. What I have observed is that adding some hop can increase muzzle energy, so I fully agree with half-hop while bench testing, or ideally with the hop dialled in for the BB weight.

  16. Sorry to hear your knee is still knackered, after many games of footy I can empathise... But I don't think I've ever had it as bad as you looked yesterday ? Yes the afternoon games were good too. The blues continued to win everything until the last game (narrowly, not a complete mullering), when I was asked by one of the kids to swap teams. Bingo, first win for the non-armbands! (Not that I'm claiming any credit, I was just a Steady Eddie all day long, no hero moments for me) Hope you're in better fettle for the next game there ?

  17. I remember an explanation of barrel bores from YouTube that said the BB rattles down a standard bore, floats down a wide bore, and runs along the top of a tight bore barrel. I have no idea if that's actually true but as in two cases the BB is supposedly contacting the walls of the barrel, I think it means energy loss would be negligible. My thought is that the hop holds the BB in place long enough for back-pressure to build up before the BB starts traveling. But that's just an intuitive guess, with no evidence either way. It would be great to know for sure ?

Is it because the magnus effect helps stabilise the bb's flight in the barrel. Without it, the bb literally rattles it's way down losing all it's energy?

  20. The usual fortnightly trip to Special Ops ... A day where everything went pretty well, without being exceptional in any particular way... Which after a couple of weather and bad luck affected game days was just fine by me! I spent the previous day putting a new roof on my shed (hard work when you're on your own), so basically I didn't have much energy, so I took a fairly slow and steady approach to the games, and didn't weigh myself down with as many guns as usual ... VFC HK416A5 (GBB) Double Eagle M906 G&G G36C TM 5.1 DOR pistol I used the 416 gas rifle for most of the day except the end of the morning... I thought the accuracy had gone to pot (partly down to a suppressor that seems to be interfering with the flight of the BB) and so I switched to the DE. Some test firing on the range showed the gun was actually fine (hitting the centre of a tree trunk at a measured 40m multiple times in a row), especially when I switched to 0.40g BBs. It was a windy day, but with this I got the confidence to roll with it for the rest of the day. It was, as usual, great fun - every kill feeling very rewarding. I intended to switch to the G36. It ran very well in my range testing today, but again it came down to enjoying the nice RoF - but only having two high cap mags I thought I might get a bit frustrated. A conundrum that can most easily be resolved by buying a couple more mags... Or perhaps selling the gun. I've got too many that don't get enough use, I think I need to sell to buy another gas gun (perhaps the G&G Lee Enfield No4 or an SMG of some sort) Nice to see some familiar faces, and made some new friends too. @Dan Robinson, I hope you're knee gets better, that looked really painful. Carlos and the team team ran the day well as usual, the usual random newbie kids not taking their hits didn't ruin it, and the afternoon TDM game with super short respawn distance was really rather fun. (My tired body appreciated that most of the spawns were close to the action today) None of the usual HPAers turned up so my body came through mostly unblemished too. Which was nice.

  21. also going to echo the comments above, reforger is a great site. last week we played in the village all morning, then moved to checkpoint charlie, runway and then finally heartbreak ridge on the map below (copied from their website). so there is still plenty of the site to explore. everyone was informed at the briefing that we would be out in the game area all day, returning at lunch time, so we were all given the option of putting a small bag with some spare ammo/gas etc into the boot of a land rover that followed us to the game areas to allow us to rearm quickly between games rather than walk back and forth from the safe zone each time. village is a relatively large grouping of buildings in the base of a ravine, so as mentioned above, getting onto the ridgeline offers a good vantage point. checkpoint charlie was where we played a kind of tug-of-war game, where each team had to push a flag toward the enemy respawn. personally i felt this area became too bogged down with everyone fighting over one main path for the flag, so i focussed on trying to flank around and take out enemies from the side as much as i could and ended up playing cat and mouse with the enemy snipers in the woods surrounding the path. the "runway" at this time of year has quite long grass growing across the field, so there is plenty of cover for anyone moving towards the objective at the crashed airplane. i didnt see much of the surrounding area as i had dug into a fox hole to defend the plane and didnt move around much. also didnt realise at the time that there were two downed planes on the site with only half the site explored on my visit, i will definately be returning in the near future in hopes of visiting the rest of the site.

  23. I would recommend a 7.4v LiPo, personally, as LiPo is currently the best chemistry for airsoft due to the combination of burst amps, stability, power to weight, and price. LiFe are fine, but will be larger, with less burst discharge (what you need for airsoft electrical draw). You don’t have to do anything to “convert” it to 11.1v. It’ll run on 11.1v right now. The caveats are the consequences. Depending on the quality of your trigger contacts, an 11.1v may burn them out. Good contacts will easily last 150K+ cycles, but we all know how allergic airsoft and quality are to each other. This can be fixed with some basic dielectric grease on the trigger contacts, or by a MOSFET chip wired into the contacts. Those units you plug in don’t actually protect anything, Secondly, an 11.1v may give you PME, which is where your gears are moving too fast for your piston, causing heavy wear or critical failure. To test, listen for hitching in the cycle when using 11.1v, and chrono test for any drops in FPS using full auto. This can be fixed by, as you mentioned, a stronger spring. You can then shorten the barrel or short stroke to reduce FPS to correct levels.

    BB weights...

Going to be a bit of a wall (such a glorious wall that I'm scared the FBI is going to raid my house and throw me in jail), so I will add a TL:DR at the end with some key points for those who don't want/need to understand the physics and mathematics behind our hobby. Ok, so I've done a LOT of research into BB weight and ballistics due to my interest in long distance shooting in airsoft. Also, please bear in mind that this is, at the end of the day, a layman's explanation of this. I'm operating on A-level mathematics and GCSE physics here, and I haven't done them in about a decade. It's also really hard to explain this without a whiteboard or sheet of paper to draw diagrams and stuff, so bear with me I'll do my best to keep it accessible! So, the maths behind our hobby! Kinetic energy is calculated by 1/2 x mass x (velocity x velocity), using brackets as order of operations means we do the squaring before the multiplication but it's easier to show this way exactly what I'm doing. However we can't just translate that to airsoft measurements of fractions of a gram and feet per second, as joules are calculated using mass in kg so really really small numbers in our context and velocity in metres per second, not feet per second. So a 0.2g BB shot at 328fps, which is 100m/s would calculate as: Energy = 1/2 x 0.0002 x (100 x 100) Energy = 0.0001 x 10000 Energy = 1J Only reason I used 328fps instead of 350fps is to avoid plaguing you with weird numbers and make the example easier to follow. Really, feet per second is annoying and we should be using metres per second since it's easier to work with in terms of energy calculations. It's why springs are m100, m120 etc, as they're designed in m/s rather than ft/s. What we can take away from this is that mass and velocity work in tandem to calculate joules (I know, I'm big smart for drawing such a conclusion). However we need to briefly consider momentum to understand ballistics; my physics teacher always described momentum as "how much something will hurt when it hits you" and is a lot simpler than kinetic energy. Momentum = mass x velocity. Easy. I'm not going to bore you with the calculations I'm doing for this example now, but I'm looking at 1.14J on a .2 and on a .48 as a comparison. That's 350fps on a .2 and 226.1fps (1 decimal place) on a .48. We can already see that momentum is going to be very different, but for argument's sake... momentum = 350 x .2 = 70 gram feet per second momentum = 226.1 x .48 = 108.5 gram feet per second (1 decimal place) So a heavy BB fired with the same kinetic energy as a lighter BB has more momentum (just over 50% more!). This is why when someone point blanks you with a .48 from a 1J pistol and says "stop crying, it's only 1J" is talking bollocks. Do I think we should be operating on momentum-based rules for airsoft? Hell no, that would be cancerous, but it's a consideration that I feel comes under the golden rule of "don't be a dick". However, this also goes a LONG way to explaining why heavy BBs tend to go further than lighter BBs; they simply have more momentum pushing forwards due to how physics works (the old example was if I throw a balloon vs if I throw a cricket ball with the same kinetic energy, which goes further). However, there's one last thing to consider when it comes to range and that's deceleration, as the BB is being affected by a number of things trying to slow it down and drop it to the ground, namely air resistance and gravity respectively. Hop up creates a backspin to give the BB an upwards lift to combat gravity, but combating air resistance isn't happening. I won't go into the mathematics on this as deceleration past GCSE level is really maths intensive (I would probably have to break out calculus and trigonometric functions to explain my point), but essentially an object moving at a higher velocity has more air resistance acting on it, so that BB travelling faster actually has more pushback from Mother Nature than a slower BB. Furthermore, that air resistance is going to have more effect on a lighter weight projectile as lower mass makes it easier to push back, so a combination of higher air resistance and more impactful air resistance means that a lightweight BB fired at the same energy is going to slow down and lose that energy a hell of a lot faster than a heavy projectile. Anyway, I hope you're all still awake after that (I find it fascinating, but I know not everyone does), but now I'll move into airsoft specific phenomena like joule creep and cylinder to barrel ratio. With AEGs, it's rare that power goes up with weight but it is possible. I couldn't explain to you in detail how the maths works out, but essentially there's a sweet spot for ammo weight with most guns and it varies dependant on inner barrel length and cylinder size. What tends to happen is that shorter barreled AEGs are more efficient with heavier ammo, but longer barreled AEGs tend to drop in power with heavier BBs due to voluming issues; the cylinder doesn't have enough air to fill the barrel so the BB starts to decelerate while it's still in the barrel, meaning that a heavier BB that comes out slower originally will start to have forces working against it (friction with the barrel and air resistance) sooner by fractions of a second, but it all affects it. It all depends on if there's enough air in the cylinder to fill the barrel. Look up cylinder to barrel ratio for a better explanation than I can give; I don't use AEGs much and they're the only guns I don't tech myself because I'm useless with gearboxes. Also, as has been said, heavier ammo typically needs more hop pressure to be applied which can also drop your power (as at the end of the day you're adding some resistance to the BB's flight path. Assuming you have enough air volume in an AEG, or if you're using another platform like a GBB, then heavy ammo will typically cause your power to go up due to joule creep as long as you're not having to apply incredible amounts of hop to lift them. The BB will accelerate while it's in the barrel as long as there's something to push it, which for a gas gun is the gas expanding when it leaves the magazine, so a longer barreled gas rifle will have a higher power than a shorter barreled gas rifle as it has more space to accelerate before leaving the barrel; it's the same as real-steel firearms, a long barreled AR-15 will shoot better at longer range than a short barreled AR-15 assuming the same ammo due to acceleration in the barrel. So why am I saying any of this? Well, it's the considerations part of your question. With AEGs you need to consider cylinder to barrel ratio and with gas guns you need to consider barrel length. In both you need to consider the hop setup and how much you need to apply to lift the BB and the barrel diameter also impacts power; wider = less power, tightbore = more, as there's less space for air to escape past the BB in a tightbore so it has to push the BB out to escape the inner barrel, which at the end of the day is what the gun is trying to do with all that air and is why air seal is so important for consistency, as the air will seek to escape from wherever it can. Now in terms of the benefits, a heavier BB will tend to have a more stable trajectory, has a bit more punch to get through foliage and will retain its kinetic energy for longer, though we're talking about fractions here. Will a .32 be all that different to a .28? Not really, but will a .48 perform differently to a .2? It most certainly will but I think often times people over-estimate the difference in BB performance. Wind will still carry a .48 off to Narnia and a leaf will still deflect a .48; trust me, speaking from experience there as a bolt action enjoyer who has watched many shots through my scope go their own way because of wind or leaves in the way. Really, punching through foliage requires volume of fire as opposed to weight of BB and I think "go heavy to punch through foliage" is a false economy. Even my .48s fired at 2.3J have issues punching through foliage and I usually try to post the shots through empty spaces in the bushes rather than going through any leaves; precision over power. Anyway, I feel like I've gone on enough about this. Thank you for coming to my TED talk on BB weight and the physics behind our hobby. In short: Heavier BBs fired at the same kinetic energy as lighter BBs have more momentum, which is why it hurts more getting shot by heavy BBs, even at 1J Faster projectiles have more air resistance acting on them Lighter projectiles are more affected by air resistance Therefore lighter BBs travelling faster both have more air resistance acting on them and are more affected by said air resistance This means that heavy BBs will travel further as they have more momentum, less air resistance acting on them and are less affected by that air resistance (assuming your hop can lift them) Joule creep will cause power to go up in gas guns with longer barrels as the BB has more room to accelerate Cylinder to barrel ratio affects power (and consistency) in AEGs. Heavier BBs can up the power in short barreled AEGs, but tend to drop the power in long barreled ones If you want the absolute maximum performance of your gun you generally want to be as close to the power limit as possible with the heaviest BB that your hop will lift I will still call you a dick if you run .48s in a pistol, especially if you're shooting up close

  29. Well I really can't work women out. Mrs Shamal is on a ten day cruise of the med. So I hatched a plot to send her a video of her two most loved furry friends. Nonky the tiger and cheeser the mouse. She is so protective about them that it's unreal. With the help of @EDcasea video was produced that showed them both hanging from my drone at the local cricket club although they have never left the house.( Excellent production from Ed.) I sent her the video today thinking that she would go ballistic( imagine a five foot stick of tnt in the heat of a Turkish bazaar) Her reaction? "Ahh Sweet"? Unbelievable! I asked her how many cocktails she had had. No reply. I may be on some sort of hit list for when she returns. If you don't hear from me then you know the reason why!? Regards

  30. for some people the interest in firearms and collecting goes beyond the actual pew pew , they aren’t doing it for anyone else they are doing it because in the whole it’s a difficult challenge to piece together and satisfying once you get to the end . It’s a shame but for some reason there is way more negative “judgement” on people putting a lot of effort into their builds than there is in reverse . Just reading this thread tells you that those people are the first to try and offer advice and help to anyone else wanting to go that route ?? each to their own of course ?

I've done it! It's finally finished (for now ?). Fitted the storm grip and dremeled the life out of the rail and outer barrel to be able to fit a crane stock LiPo into tithes morning. Also had to cut down the front wire and re-solder a deans onto it - not pretty but the heat shrink hides it!

  35. my one time up at Red Alert (so far) i popped in as one does when there is a continer full of 2nd kit, gear and pews wondered up and down the aslie. The two chaps in there were friendly and talkitive, thought i had struck gold when i found an extended WE pistol mag - asked if they knew which model it fit and just let me wondar off to try it in my p226, alas it was not to be and it didnt fit ( why so many different mags configerations are needed i DO know {its sales an extra ££}). i did find a dpm boonie, much cheaper than ebay + pp though so that was a win. the new website is a solid addition to their store and one i will be keeping an eye on.

  37. I hate this place. There's always something that empties my wallet. Seriosuly though; it's a great place to pick up bargains. Second hand rifs and kit, in good condition, or sell some of your own surplus. If I need something these days my first port of call is stack up. If Graham doesn't have it he knows where to get it. Obviously, sometimes, with a second hand rif there may be an issue. It's a second hand rif, after all. Example; a friend's son bought a pistol. It went wrong first time out. Graham took it back, fixed it, and now it works perfectly. Stocked with loads of standard stuff but also lots of oddities, and run by people with a wealth of airsoft knowledge going back many years. I'd definitely recommend.

  38. Every time I'm at Red Alert I go in and have a browse (or two). Good selection of 2nd hand stuff (RIF's, outfits, webbing, etc.). Bought a scope last time I was there. Helpful staff who also sometimes marshall along at Red Alert itself.

  39. There is a sticky post in this sub-forum relating to retailers. "A topic with a link to your website and a description about why players might wish to do business with you is absolutely no problem. Even better if you can come back to the forum and answer any questions that might be posted in your topic. Your own topic full of copy and pasted marketing spiel will get no replies (before it's deleted) and it won't look great on you." So this is permissable. Be good to get some more members' views on their shopping experience.

    What have you made?

took a break from the SP9 build and designed and printed a front end for the Saiga 12K as I'm running it CQB so need somewhere for a torch and front grip. File can be found here for free: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6127823

    What have you made?

Going for the Tokyo Marui prototype look here. Mock up in 3D resin proved fruitful as I need to adjust the butt cap as it's a bit tight and the designer is an idiot and managed to design the mag release spring tension the wrong way so that it always dumps the mag instead of retaining it. These should be easy fixes. Anyone want to buy one when I'm finished?

  45. Cheers @RostokMcSpoons, the 6th time it popped out was enough to end the day for me. Usually it resets straight away, but this time it took 2 hours and still isn't quite right this morning. Shame though because the morning games in the good weather were pretty epic for us on the blue team. Particularly the raiding of the military items. We got all of ours pretty quickly when attacking, but on the reversal, the otherside didn't get any as far as I know. Especially funny was when 6 or 7 people were running up a path in the open and 2 or 3 of us just opened up, putting an end to that particular push. L85 was rocking again... Although the boy's parting gift was to change the riser for my scope which meant not only was the zeroing totally off, but he didn't tighten the mounting screws enough, so that was a running repair for the morning. I didn't think the hit taking was too bad, only one instance I noticed, which in hindsight could have been a flag tied to a tree looking like a protruding leg. ? What was frustrating though is when the game relies on constant pushes to keep the other team suppressed, but the younglings and rentals, for obvious reasons, are chilling at respawn shooting themselves or the trees. As mentioned though, my knee decided to keep popping out of its joint, to the point where Carlos had to help me walk to a suitable fallen tree to recover, that was the 5th time. Then ironically during lunch, it happened again when I got up for a second helping, and, even when it reset, the pain was too much. Tried walking back to the war zone for the afternoon session but had to give up. A couple of kind gents ran to the game zone to recover my remaining pews and ammo and I went home. A bit gutting because a lot of people left at lunch and I assume the smaller numbers made for a more intense afternoon.
