Table Top skirmish game for Kids?

I've not yet ventured into the world of wargaming but have been interested and on the fringe for a while. Been looking into Ultra modern's and 3d printing as it's what I'd have the most interest in giving the whole Airsoft/Milsim interest. Like you I've been sort of put off by all the rules but this rule set looks interesting: https://www.empressminiatures.com/danger-close-rules-47-c.asp It's apparently just 2 sides of A4 and designed to be played on a 4' x 4' table with 4-15 figures per side so sounds like it would suit what you're looking for. I think it's designed for anything from WW2 upto modern day but imagine it could be adjusted for sci-fi.3 points -

Great suggestions above. Talisman is on the board-game side of that equation, sort of swords-and-monopoly, and a very gentle introduction. But it's Games Workshop money, and looks to be out of stock everywhere, it's just the expansions for sale. Thing is, there's so much variety and tastes vary so much that it's hard to know what to recommend. If you want an overview, there's a great YouTube series, Tabletop, that covers... well, tabletop games, hosted by Wil "Shut up Wesley" Wheaton. Most of the episodes are watch-with-kids friendly, it's what I used to get my children playing. Some of them are pretty entertaining just to watch, not necessarily as recommendations (for playing with people that you have to live with), like Munchkin. The full playlist is here if you want dive in.2 points -

Yup, my DE M906 with the Falcon ECU managed to kill a Titan Li-Ion battery when I left it in the gun for a couple of days, in spite of the fact the Titan was supposed to be immune to being run down to an un-recoverable empty state AND the Falcon unit was supposed to protect against clearing out the battery. The small trickle of voltage required to do the monitoring must have been enough to knacker it.2 points -
Same same. If it has electronics in then it'll have a standby drain that can knacker a battery.2 points

I actually have mine now, I had to import it from Asia. It's a much darker, brick-like colour than it looks in photos. The finish is nicer than the other AA Hi-Capa I had, but the paint is still quite thin and as such has already come off in the areas which are subjected to some rubbing. I like how the outer barrel sits in the compensator, seems to make for a very flat shooter. The mag goes in smoother than any pistol I've ever had. It also has one of the most realistic (to real steel), triggers I've come across. It has just the right amount of stiffness and then a nice crisp break. It would have been nice if they included an extended silver mag like they do with the RS. I think it would be easily distinguishable from the real thing, side-by-side but I'm happy enough with it overall, for the price. Actually my biggest gripe is something which mirrors the RS, it doesn't have any iron sights. This was especially annoying as mine came without screws for the SRO.2 points -
Does the rifle has a mosfet? Some of them can drain batteries quite easily when not in use.2 points

What brand Packs? I've had HobbyKing Turnigys do this randomly despite taking good care of the packs (storage and balance charging with a high-end charger). Was your gun stored indoors (i.e. room temperature) or in an outbuilding/shed where it's colder? I would drop the pack into a bucket of salt water for a few days then bin it - I don't think the B6 has LiPo destroy function (although I would argue that B6's have a secret, randomly initiated, self-destruct function...😜)2 points -

"Downed Airman" Vietnam kit is just about done - close enough to share at least. I still need a faithful shotshell pouch and due to the EPM-1S mags being taller than standard 20 rounders I need to either get 30 round mag pouches or general small arms mag pouches - still undecided on those. Also waiting for helmet parts to arrive - some missing bolts, fresh straps and foam, etc but none of that is visible so itll look the same as it does now. Ill actually play with it with the visor up and proper eyepro instead, but for pics visor down is Ace.1 point -

I realise you mentioned the TM, but I’ve got a Gen 2 Umarex/VFC which has been running like a train since I got it. It’s probably had 10k rounds through it totally stock, and apart from the stock catch needing replacing (common fault as the metal used is pants, but the replacement is steel and costs very little). There were some teething issues on the first version, but the Gen 2’s are solid. Gas efficiency is solid, with a fill giving about two to three mags before needing to be refilled. In -5°C it was still running crisply on semi with Ultrair. The Gen 2’s come with an NPAS installed so you can tune it to the conditions too. As an added bonus the VFC is 1:1 whereas the TM’s aren’t.1 point

Most skirmish games tend to be pretty rule heavy, especially when it comes to individual units. You could try him with Star Saga. Boardagem Geek users rate it as a 2.78 out of 5 for complexity. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/209696/star-saga It's a cross between a board game and a skirmish game, with the added bonus that you can even play it solo, or with up to 5 people. I have it and enjoy it as a simple, quick game, but then I am very nerdy about tabletop games, so what is simple to me may not be for him? The rules are pretty straightforward, for a skirmish game, and it comes with an array of good miniatures and terrain, if he also fancies getting into the painting side of the hobby. There are a bunch of missions you can play, and the tiles that come with it are arranged differently for each mission. And there's nothing to stop you designing your own mission Alternatively browse boardgamegeek, OR, I would suggest seeing if there's a tabletop gaming store near you, and pop in for a chat with the and see if they have any recommendations. Edit: Weekend warriors sounds fun!1 point -

Exactly that. Abstracted hit-point systems are for daft lightweight theatrical fantasy. There are plenty of storytelling systems if you want that, or blow the dust off a copy of Rolemaster and see how many permanently crippling injuries you can rack up from a housecat scratch. I'm fascinated to see what Cavill and Amazon do with 40K, given budget constraints - they won't want another billion dollar Rangz flop on their hands. The suggestion I've seen is that they'll go for something in the crime series rather than raw bolter-porn, which could be intriguing - if done right.1 point -

The D&D movie is entertaining me already. Many nerds are complaining about it being too silly and humorous. This nerd, however, recognises that that's pretty much every D&D session. Sure, you may want to be grim and moody and brooding heroes, but it rarely turns out like that. D&D sessions lean more towards Pratchett than Tolkien, so I'm all for silly movie. And yes, LOVING the monsters so far. I can only wish that the end of the movie smash cuts to the actors sat around a table trying to arrange a date for the next session but having scheduling conflicts. Yeah, nice to see that he's also producing, so maybe he'll convince the studio to treat the lore with respect and not shaft it utterly (Rings of Power, and especially Halo). I really can't see the series being as horrific and grim as 40K really is. I can but hope. It's the lore that keeps dragging me back to 40k after all these years.1 point -

Ah, right, I think it's 5E they're using, I'd formed the impression that 6 was already out. I was surprised to see that D&D: The Final Frontier film is, while a little cheesy looking, pretty much Monster Manual fanservice. Mimic, displacer beast, gelatinous cube, owbear and what might have been a stone drolem just on a cursory viewing of the trailer. It's almost like they don't actually hate their audience. And with 40K, it seems that we're getting the world's strongest nerd, Henry Cavill, exec producing and acting in a live action series for Amazon. I reckon he only does acting work in order to be able to afford the plastic crack.1 point -

I do indeed member, sky captain. I member being a Magic User using darts cos I had used my spell for the day🤣 It's gutting that WOTC are doing this, and I think it will cost them players, me included. Fuck em, they'll get no more of my money. 5th edition is the most up to date D&D, and you're absolutely right, it is a gateway. A few years back I put together a D&D group of random strangers through a tabletop gaming shop, we're all still playing together (Apart from one guy who was a douche). When I started they were all pretty new to tabletop games, now they're all expanding out into different systems, because of D&D. Tabletop gaming, be it RPGs or wargames, are seeing something of a renaissance in the past few years, and I put it down mainly to the surge in popularity of D&D 5E. 5th is a very easy rules set to get into, and really helps people see the fun of TTRPGs.1 point -
Welcome @DoJaL 🖐 Yes, plenty of things to read here for new and veteran players 👍 @Tommikka I think (and hope) that 'disused' relates to what the site was originally intended for and is now officially used as an airsoft site. It would be seriously foolish to 'play' on derelict sites without the owners permission at least. Rif from 'storage'.

from what I understand he used to have a good rep..... and then things started slipping. I think it was dave oakfield/renniks (of maple leaf tactical for those old enough to remember!) did a big post about him about a year ago and how he hadn't done the honourable thing with quite an expensive PTW A2 (memory is fuzzy, could have sworn it's Jtac) leaving him quite out of pocket etc. I don't know if that got resolved. Unfortunately this is the sort of thing you hear every now and then, someone is good, they get a good rep and to keep orders flowing in their prices stay the same, they get flooded with orders and can't cope. They either increase their headcount etc (which is a massive gamble as employees generally aren't as good), they up their prices etc. or stuff slips. Some unfortunately just try to soldier on, work all the hours, barely make any money, good service turns to bad and suddenly they're in super deep and stories like this start coming out. I reckon most of them aren't doing it with the intention of being bad, just that real life happens and they get overwhelmed or lose the passion for it and have an honest intention of "I'll get that sorted next weekend"......next weekend become the one after etc. I don't know the specifics for Jtac or the situation there, but it's a name and a company I personally avoid based on what I have heard.1 point -
Rif from 'storage'.
ak2m4 reacted to ghostwalker for a topic
Ok so I figure in fairness I will name the tech and give the story so there's some context. Back in March last year I contacted John Boycie Turrell formerly Jtac custom. I had dealt with him for parts and never had any problems or issues. I also knew he did a lot of work on kwa rifs before and wanted someone who knew their away around them. All was fine and the rif was posted away and received. He did mention it might be a few weeks as he was going away for a couple of weeks on holiday. No biggie I was happy to wait a couple of weeks. So towards the end of May I chase it up and he hasn't had a chance to look at it due to a new job and 60 hour working week.. I figure life hits and leave it there Late August comes round, I haven't played in months as I'm down to 1 rif and it's time to chase it up again as no communication. At this point I'm informed he hasn't been able to look at it and has passed it onto another tech named Adam and he should have been in contact. So he will chase it up. I should point out that at no point have I been asked if that's OK or even asked if I wanted it sent to another tech. Work jumps in for a bit and come mid October I send John the 1st sort of message indicating I'm not happy and would like my rif back. So far this other tech who I only know as Adam has made no contact with me. Once again promises he will chase it up. It then transpires Adam hasn't touched it, I'm invited into another conversation with another tech Jimmy who offers to sort the rif out for the cost of parts only if any are needed. In an a bid to get the rif sorted and home I agree. So December 9th comes around and I have heard nothing so I message Jimmy to see if he has seen the rif. Guess what. He hasn't received it. I know Jimmy's last name, but I'm not mentioning it as he is a blameless part of this saga. I chase John again, tell him I just want the rif back now whether it's in 100 pieces or 1 and I will sort it myself. I'm told he will get it back from Adam and get it sent back to me. Along with comments about how he hates letting people down and life gets in the way. I'm still trying to be nice at this point as I want the rif back and like a fool I trust people further than I should. December 30th cones around. A slightly sarcastic 'I guess there's no sign of my rif being returned then' message goes off. I'm told there is and it will be posted UPS on Tuesday(January 3rd) due to the postal strikes etc. So a little spark of hope flares. Tuesday comes and goes I wait until the Friday and chase it up. Message gets ignore. At this point I start to genuinely believe that the rif has gone, or sold or something. I had a few friends including my Mrs tell me i wouldn't see it again. A combination of bad work life, some pretty crappy normal life stuff combined with not playing airsoft due to only having 1 unreliable rif. Has all combined to have me pretty low and heading towards a depression spiral at this point. So Monday comes (January 9th). Probably due to me being a Moody git all day the Mrs says send him a more forceful message or resign yourself to never seeing it again. So I do, effectively asking why I haven't had the rif back, wanting answers and closure due to it affecting my mental health. A couple of hours later im asked for my address, email and phone number. I'm then sent a photo of a box with a UPS label on it that looks suspiciously like the one I originally posted. Sire enough 2 days later it arrives home (hoooray) and its the same package I sent away, it hasn't been opened, not even the plastic wrap on the outside. I have tried to give a full, lengthy view of what happened as I don't know if this 'adam' tech exists and if so whether the full blame lies with him or with John.1 point -
