  1. We had quite an intensive run of them, alongside the spammers, but seems to have been quieter recently, but everyone needs to remain on their guard & if you see, suspect, or God forbid, get turned over yourself then holler, we can only call ourselves a community if we work together.

  4. Good advice given on this thread! I love running a sub 350fps bolty. I use .32s as they are a good compromise with cost v ultimate 'liftability.' I play at Gunman sites, and Josh usually asks anyone daft enough to use a sub-350fps bolty to say at the safety brief. This avoids the 'He's cheating/shooting within the MED' crap. You could ask the chaps at your site to do the same if they don't already. For short range, get a bayonet fitted... I find that I immerse myself far more with my K98. I think harder, use fieldcraft more and don't walk shots in as much. If you have a look at the day write ups thread, there are a few posts that give advice on getting the most out of your rif. Impulse is a bit of a guru in this department, but don't tell him I said so!

  9. If you're unsure at your local site, I'd just speak with the marshalls and clarify. I can't imagine they'd saddle you with an MED if you're shooting at 1.14J or lower, but they may decide to because they're lazy they don't want to have people running around with 2.3J sniper rifles point-blanking people and then claiming "no, I'm at 1J". Typically "AEG", "DMR" and "Sniper Rifle" are more classifications than actual RIF types. I've never been told at any site or event I've been to (outside of AI500) that I can't use a bolt action rifle at 1.14J or lower and then shoot up close like everyone else. For example, when I play Vietnam filmsim events at Gunman, they have a sniper ban during the summer where DMRs and sniper rifles are banned because the ferns grow high and it's harder to find angles without creeping into your MED. However, they still allow me to use my m700, very much a bolt action rifle with a scope on it, as long as I set it to 1.14J or under, because at that point it's just the same as anyone's AEG, just a lot quieter, typically more accurate and more satisfying to hunt GIs with I've never been to a site or event that has told me I still have to have an MED if I have a bolt action rifle (or a gun that looks and acts like a DMR) at 1.14J or under. At some sites a 1.14J bolt action is far more useful, like Gunman Eversley during the summer due to their sniper ban, and also my local Worthing Airsoft as while they don't have a ban, the site becomes even more woodland CQB during the summer because of how much it bushes up. The only difference was AI500. They didn't let me bring one of my 1.14J bolt actions to the shopping centre one for no other reason apart from they said "no sniper rifles", even though it was under the power limits and actively would've made my life more difficult (CQB with a bolt action is a challenge, but a thrill!). They also had a moan at me at the Citadel one when I brought my m21 because it looks like a sniper rifle, but I said "it's an m14 with a scope. It's just a battle rifle and the power is under 1.14J" and so they didn't stop me from using it. So that's the only example I have of a site/event classing guns based on how the action works / what they look like. Also, it can go the other way (somewhat). I've seen people running arp9s with drum mags as "DMRs" because they're locked to semi-auto and the power is higher, though most events and some regular sites will specify that a DMR has to be a RIF based on a real-world DMR, like an m14, SR-25, mk12 etc. DMR rules are the thing that varies the most from site to site, as they could be 1.48J, 1.64J or 1.88J depending on the site, some sites mandate a stock, some sites require specific RIFs like I said earlier.

  10. Welcome, I'd suggest finding a site in the area of the country that you can get to and look for a hire option. Get a taste for the game rather than youtube and then see where you are after a few days with hired rifs.

  11. Welcome to the money pit! Rent a gun and kit first to get a feel for the hobby and make sure you want to invest in it. Make sure you have good boots that give ankle support and wear clothing that you don't mind getting wet and filthy. Where in London are you based?

  12. Ahoy and welcome. No need to over-think it. Find a site near to you, and book a rental package. If you enjoy it and reckon that you'll stick with it, then you think about purchasing options. Renting isn't as expensive as it looks though. A rental package is typically £20 more than a walk on, but you'll get through £10 or so worth of BBs anyway, so it's really only £10 a day to rent a gun and support for it without investing anything yourself. Waiting the 8 weeks / 3 games before getting a site membership / UKARA number will give you time to cadge a go on some guns and figure out what you want to buy. There's no need to go as a team or with anyone else. There will be a brief for rentals covering the basics, and airsofters tend to be a friendly bunch. You'll easily enough get talking to folk on site. Just ask someone about their guns and gear and see if you can get them to shut up.

  20. All thoroughly wrapped by Fire Support (surprisingly). I was looking to enhance my E&C M16 somewhat and was expecting the G&P stuff to be a lot nicer as their full M4/M16s from back in the day were overall nicer externally, but where the G&P bits turned out a cut above in a lot of areas, they also fell short in a few as well and on balance I couldn't/didn't choose to use most of the front end stuff. As an example, the 203 handguard has a much more realistic leaf sight than an E&C equivalent and maybe slightly better plastic but it's completely missing the metal inner heatshield (which the E&C has). Oh and don't buy an LCT Crane stock.. holy shit literally the worst quality plastic airsoft accessory I've ever touched 😂 Suuuper thin and awful plastic, sharp, pathetically lightweight, shiny and poorly fit with the side compartment caps barely held in place. The other stock is an ASG which lacks the QD sling mount but the plastic is matt, thick and sturdy; pretty damn close in composition to a real B5 SOPMOD. While I'm not their biggest fan admittedly, you just can't deny Helikon stuff especially the more recent lol. The cap is weirdly small but the (stupidly named) trousers are just stupidly good; got given another pair in green about 5-6 years ago and wear them absolutely constantly yet they still look new, so had to go for a 2nd set.

  30. We actually bought the rifle from Surplus Store. I won’t be able to get over there before Saturday but happy to give it a go with stock spring. I found a hank of rope in the garage that is 30m and laid it out, it’s actually not as far as I thought. Looks like our usual engagement distance for our AR’s on a wide game to be honest. Thanks for all the help and advice, really appreciated.

  32. Yeah. I deliberately didn't mention the price because it wasn't unreasonable. It was just the guff about saying it does but doesn't work properly and the autofellatio he was performing over the paintjob that read like he was dreaming as Stevie Wonder could probably paint it better using his feet.

  33. Practically mandatory. I enjoy bolt action, it's a different style of play. And (especially when you're defensive) you're often within the range of other guns anyway, even if you're shooting at 2.3J. Sneak and poke and have fun with it, it's all good.

  34. One thing i've learnt with snipers (in general) is that the size of a meter differs depending if they're working out the MED or if they're trying to sell it

  35. Thanks Rogerborg, I've got a lot to learn on this, I've never fired a boltie and haven't put a round through our new gun yet. I'll see what happens the weekend and report back I think we've fallen into the typical noob trap of getting over excited and buying loads of stuff. Hey ho, what else is money for.

  36. It's not an unreasonable assumption that anyone using a bolt action is going to have thrown in a spring that pushes it up to the site limit. Bear in mind that the marshals and other players aren't going to know what energy you're shooting at, so prepare to get shouted at for engaging up close even if it's down at the lower end. That said, there are folk who run bolt actions at under 1.14J in order to not have a MED. And if you're just a bit over, and don't have a sidearm, a pragmatic site owner might tell you to just not point-blank anyone with it - see what they say. On the other hand, some sites can be (understandably) strict about their rules as they're conditions of insurance. Generally you want to run the heaviest BB that your hop will lift (and your wallet will stand) in a sniper. I'd be looking at using at least 0.32g, ideally over 0.4g if the hop can lift it. If you drop down to a lighter BB to de-creep the energy down to under 1.14J, fair enough, but you're giving up one of the advantages of a bolt-action where you need every shot to be as consistent and to carry its energy as far as possible. I'd keep your expectations very low for a stock boltie - you're going to be outgunned by just about everybody else there. Fingers crossed that it all goes well and you enjoy the manual action.

  37. I've just worked it out using an online calculator on .28 BB's which I'm planning on using. Totally get that it would be impractical to treat each gun on a case by case biases and I will stick to the 30m rule if asked too. I'll talk to the marshals when I get the gun chrono'd on Saturday and see what's said. Thanks for the input and glad it wasn't a stupid question Thanks Impulse, I will take .2, .25, .28 BB's with me so if needs be I can make sure I'm under the 1.14J limit. The marshalls have been really helpful so far at the site so I'll take their advice. Personally I don't have an issue with the 30m limit but my son who's 12 wants to use the rifle and I don't think he can judge distances as well as me, I don't want to get him into trouble or piss off other players. We don't have sidearms (yet). My son and i will come down to Worthing Airsoft soon, only heard good things about this place.

  38. As tackle says the main reason i can think is simply stereotypes. Practically what matters for an med is that the bb has some time to drop in owchiness, so it should on paper be only the energy level that counts regardless of the pew type. But on the ground, i can see many an argument being levied of "oi sniper that's not 30m", so maybe easier to just to limit everything people think is going to be an med gun regardless of it's actual power level.
    1 point
  39. Not daft on your part, the sites are making a very common assumption that any snipers will be running at or close to their maximum limit, whereas your out of the box sniper is only doing close to the aeg limit , which would seem unfair. Best thing you could do is explain this to the site, give them a call & see if they'll allow you to run it with a different contact criteria, explain its running at aeg levels & until you get it upgraded, it's more about practicing the field craft than getting long range kills.

  45. My son wanted to play this thing ‘Airsoft’ that I never heard of before. He told me that I have to play 3 times and then gift him a RIF. At first I was against it but he convinced me to try it out. I’ve enjoyed it and we’ve been going every month since. My relationship with my son has improved dramatically. Before we didn’t have much in common and now we talk Airsoft, equipment all the time (much to my wife’s annoyance 😉 So I would try to approach your dad from that angle. As Dan already said there are lots of Dad&Son combos on the field. I thought I would be far too old for this but I’ve seen lots of grey middle aged (and older) men out there.

  46. As a father to a teenager I second that - the boy and I have our own distinct loadouts. Looking forward to him coming home in June so I can shoot the crap out of him again: We have (I like to think) a pretty solid relationship as a result of spending Airsoft days together. I certainly know him better than he thinks I do. The boy also has some school friends who's mum was into Airsoft - her and her partner's loadout's were pretty awesome. We had some fun gameday's as a group. However, your dad may have genuine reasons for being apprehensive - I was at first TBH. It's not just the financial cost of owning a gun. My brother and his missus are completely against guns of any kind for example so my nephew would have had no chance if he wanted Airsoft as a hobby. It's part of what sucks to be a kid. You have to respect the boundaries your parents put in place. Of course I am giving the OP the benefit of the doubt that this isn't a wind up thread.

  49. Myself and some of the team recently attended Op-Tacs ‘The Kingdom’ rural site in Cheadle. I thought I’d write up a review as I’ve never really heard of it before, and only came to know of the site via their Instagram page. The Kingdom is one of two sites used by Op-Tac, and is advertised as the Midlands “largest Airsoft venue” with 200 acres of skirmishable woodland, interspersed with tracks, paths, (lots of) hills and plenty of trees. The site is an old Quarry, actually known as ‘Huntley Wood’ and used an activity centre and venue for other outdoor events. On-site camping is advertised but be warned, this is only for their full weekend events. I’ll touch on this at the end. Green fees are £35 for non-members, with a £10 deposit payable in advance. An extra £5 will get you lunch and there is a very limited on-site shop, more on this later. Chrono limits are fairly standard, 350fps for AEG/HPA/GBB, 450fps for a DMR and 500fps for a bolt action rifle. You are asked to chrono with a 0.2g BB, and a point to note is that this is a biodegradable BB only site. There weren’t any toilets as theirs have gone missing, but Rob (Head Marshal) explained they will be back in place for the next game day. On our arrival there was a marshal at the gate who directed us to the car park. We were on site at 0800, along with about 10-15 other cars. There is currently no safe zone in use so everybody is asked to set up from their cars which was not an issue as it was a nice day. Registration took a little while due to having to walk to the opposite end of the car park to get a signal on their card machine. All 4 of us took up the £5 lunch option which was a chicken and stuffing roll and a drink. There is no escaping the fact that we waited about 2 hours for the safety brief, with chrono opened about 45 minutes before that. It was a long time of standing about just waiting, and eventually we were called to gather for the safety brief. This was another half an hour, probably one of the more in depth briefings I’ve had at a skirmish as it included reading out parts of the risk assessment and control measures. This isn’t a dig at them for doing so, at the end of the day it does make people aware of the risks involved. Once the briefing finished a scenario was explained and we were split into our two teams. Bands vs Non-bands, one half as a NATO SF unit and the other as a Russian SF unit. Initially we ‘Russians’ would be defending a hostage and falling back through two village areas and then to the hilltop fort. Fairly straightforward, defenders could be re-gened by a medic after their first hit and would then have to go to a fixed regen point after the following two. They would then have to wait in the next fall back area. Attackers had unlimited lives. As newbies to the site we followed the advice of some regular players and set ourselves up on a ridge line inside the trees. As the attackers advanced we were able to hold them off quite easily, as although they would pick a few of us off they never managed to completely push through our position. In the end the Marshals made the decision to ‘JDAM’ all of us defenders and make us move to the next fallback positions so that the attackers could finally advance! The ‘villages’ consisted of fairly standard airsoft barricades made of wooden crates, pallets and scrim netting. The hilltop fort was made up of 2 Hesco bunkers and a large number of mounds which offered good fire positions. Either side of the fort were steep drops down to valleys completely filled with trees and very loose ground. As defenders we became aware of a sniper team who had almost completely flanked around us, so we dispatched them by rolling grenades down the slopes; very effective. Once the hill was captured we broke for lunch. We didn’t feel that the roll and bottle of water were quite worth the £5, but there were enough for everybody to have two each so this softened it a little bit. I also took this opportunity to check out the on-site shop. It did seem a bit pricey with a bag of 3300 0.28 BB’s being £19.99 and TAG AFG-6 grenades at £12.95 each so I was glad we’d brought our own. After lunch it was a simple reversal of the game before. We attacked and pretty swiftly rolled through the enemy positions. They held us up at points but we were able to keep up the momentum well and people operated well as a team. Throughout the entire day I can think of only one time when I heard somebody complain about hit-taking, with lots of calls of ‘good shot’ or ‘well played’. Our little team decided to carry out an extreme flank of the hilltop fort, which meant we advanced on it through thick trees, ferns and up some of the steepest hills I’ve come across in Airsoft. As we moved on the fort two of us had to physically crawl up a slope to engage the defenders with pistols and grenades, which was absolute great fun and I only wish I’d been able to record it. When this game was over it was about 3, most people were absolutely knackered and decided to call it a day, but about 15 of us remained to play a quick ‘infection’ type game which lasted about 20 minutes but was good fun. All in all, as a team we agreed that we had a really enjoyable day. Sportsmanship was second to none, with only one incident of grumbling which we heard. There was a lot of full-auto fire but its a big open rural site with lots of natural cover so wasn’t an issue. We would really like to visit again for one of their Milsim weekenders and see how the gameplay differs when more of the site is used as we only saw a fraction of it. The area we used was big enough for the amount of players present, with plenty of different sections to fight through so the entire team didn’t get stuck in one place. On the camping, we had attempted to contact Op-Tac by Instagram, email and then phone to see if we could stay on the Saturday night to avoid a 2 and a half hour drive on the Sunday morning. We didn’t hear anything from them but as it was advertised we decided to bite the bullet and turn up on the Saturday night anyway. We were met with a locked gate, and following an series of phone calls ended up staying at a local campsite (Hales Hall) which at £20 a car and having really good facilities we couldn’t complain about. After speaking with Rob the next day he explained that camping is only available at their weekend events, and their website will be amended as necessary. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this site to anyone, just be warned that the hills are steep and I was shattered the next day! Fighting light is key!
