  1. Just a normal skirmish day at Worthing this weekend and after last week's fiasco at the 'Nam game where everything conspired to stop me playing, This time the weather in the morning was lovely, slightly cloudy but warm and sunny otherwise and since I was wearing a fairly lightweight kit it was absolutely perfect. I was trialing a few things as well, starting to run a chest rig in addition to my belt kit, since running gas pistol and gas rifle magazines on a belt kit was adding too much weight and causing it to flop around all over the place. I was also going to run a backpack for gas and BBs, but the BBs I had with me were in a bottle and rattling all over the place, so I decided to not run the backpack today as my BB bags were padding the bottom of my mag pouches to make the m700 magazines fit better. The other thing I was experimenting with was running my mk23 again and... I both love and hate that gun. I love how quiet it is, but I hate that goddamn trigger pull. Jury is still out on whether I'll keep running it as I might go back to my HK45, but it at least earned not being put back into my box of pistols and instead gets to stay out with my HK45, p226 and AAP-01. Still running around without the ghillie, just a £25 uncrafted cobra hood from Russia to help break up the head and shoulders silhouette. Went out with the m700, which chronoed at around 2.15J, so nicely within the limit but with the 30m MED as I've been running that the past game day or so. First game we were doing an attack and defend on one of the bases that I know well and I went with two other snipers along one side, sneaking slowly along one side to start opening up the defense. Honestly, the attack went so well that our contributions were honestly not that great. We took out two or three on the way up, but our team did really well pushing the middle and the other side, so we took up positions and awaited the counter attack. My friend took up a position that he showed me last game day (and it's utter filth, I used it last game day) and he eventually ran out of ammo there were that many targets for him. I covered him from another position a little further back and we managed to hold the base for the rest of the game. We then switched ends, so we started in and around the base and the other team had to attack. I set up on the same side as we pushed beforehand, with my friend going to harass the middle. I eventually had to fall back to a spot I know, since the other team pushed up well (though it took a bit of time), after a ghillie on their team walked into the base and knife killed everyone. I wasn't there to comment on how visible his armband was, but either it was mostly hidden or the people in there were just blind and knowing airsofters I'm more inclined to go with the latter. However, the position I was in, while it covered one of the structures outside the base, rendering it unusable by the enemy team without getting plinked by me, my position also offered a tiny window to shoot to the back of the base and that's where I started to rack up hit after hit. From where they were, they had no idea where the shots were coming from, as I've looked at the spot from their position before and the gas m700 is so quiet, even though that doesn't make too much difference as the shot is about a 70m shot so they wouldn't hear it anyway. I lost count of how many people I got, but I think I went through two and a half m700 magazines taking people out on the back of the base and also in the other structure I had vision on. With my uncrafted cobra hood and my rifle wrapped, nobody could see me from their side while I was lying prone, and I've played long enough to know when and how to move to avoid being seen. It was a good game, but I think in the end they did manage to hold it, so that was one game a piece. After that we played a 3 base domination, but... well, they started our team at the bottom of the site with two of the bases at the top so we had the large hill to climb to get to two of the bases. Regardless, me and my friend headed up on the flank, keeping to the border of the site and taking a position where we could start ambushing players near one of the bases at the top of the site. It went well until they pushed around on a flank (which was out of bounds, naughty naughty!) and I got hit while trying to relocate. I told them they were out of bounds and they moved in bounds, but they didn't know my friend was there so I just bled out and headed back to respawn. I decided to run, both down the hill back to respawn and up the hill back to the front to try and get back in a somewhat timely manner, but they eventually found my friend as he didn't have a pistol and couldn't engage up close. Oh well! I still pushed back up, getting back into a position where I could start engaging targets that my team mates were fighting. It was a lot of back and forward and each time I got hit (two more times!) I ran down and up the hill once again to make sure I got back in the fight as soon as possible. Highlight of the game was posting a shot through a tiny gap in the foliage to get a satisfying whack onto a guy's helmet that could be heard for miles around from about 60m away and the most annoying part was when one of their team just walked up on our flank and shot us all while a group of six of our team just... watched him do it. Remember what I said earlier about airsofters and being blind? Yeah... Anyway, in the end I think the other team won that one, two bases to one, which is largely what I expected with the spawns where they were. While I was happy to run back and forth (even though I'm currently 145kg, which is anywhere between 40 - 50kg too heavy), a lot of airsofters aren't and we just never got a decent presence at the top of the site since only about ten (of a team of 40) of us made the effort. Every time I went back to respawn I saw lots and lots of people milling about the bottom of the site not doing much, but such is life at a skirmish day ? I decided not to go out after lunch. They did a game they like to call Omaha, which has one team starting at the top of the hill and the other team has to push through them through a relatively narrow gap. You'd think with us being at the bottom of the site for the last game they would've started us on defense at the top first, right? Right...? Nope, our team was consigned to the bottom of the hill once more and I decided that pushing up a narrow part of the site with a bolt action rifle with an MED wasn't worth it, plus the forecast was heavy rain in the afternoon and the clouds were starting to look a bit angry. I think I made the right decision, as I had surprised myself with my ability to run all 145kg of me plus kit up and down that hill before lunch but I was feeling a bit tired after that. Also, the heavens did indeed open up and even on the range I was fogging, since it was still warm but it turned super humid with the rainfall. Instead I decided to make sure the SR-25 is still shooting well, setting the scope and making sure the hop rubber was good and oh my goodness was it good. Chronoed it in the morning just in case I wanted to use it and it was pretty much right on 1J and once I had set the scope (since there was no wind today) and the hop up, it was reliably hitting the 60m target. Also, for an AEG it's pretty quiet so I am very impressed with that gun. Had a chat with my friend and we're going to start pairing up more, with one running a bolt action and one running a 1J rifle so we can operate as a proper sniper/spotter pair. Today was okay, but two bolt actions isn't a great setup. Next game day I'm going to be the spotter, since I have a better gun for it and I have the rangefinder so it'll be the SR-25 next time. The only bad parts of the day were the cheaters, since there was quite a bit of non-hit taking, and an annoying rule that they've started to run with at Worthing. Most of the games today were semi-auto only, which I get for filmsim / milsim games where you have dedicated roles and support gunners who are allowed full auto, but at a skirmish day I really don't. I think it's come into effect because too many people whinge about over-shooting, including one of the marshalls when he plays, so they've started making the games all semi-only. It doesn't really affect me, since the guns I run tend to be semi-only anyway because of muh immersion (SR-25 shouldn't have full auto!) and the fact that GBBRs don't tend to like full-auto much, but if you like running a support gun you're a bit stuck at the moment. I really hope it doesn't persist, but it has cropped up in the last two game days so the cynic in me is doubtful. Only time will tell, but I've just had a curry and I'm happily unpacking after what was a good day for the mostpart. Roll on the next!

I don't know if people have come across this, but thought it worth noting, just in case peeps haven't. Potential purchasers are asking for pieces of paper next to the same items with the PURCHASERS name on it. It's obvious to say this, but just in case DO NOT DO THIS If anyone tried it, bring it to the mod's attention so they can be nuked.

  10. Took a nice leisurely drive down to Bournemouth today to play at camouflage Airsoft.1st visit. Nice big, shady carpark. Short(ish)walk to registration and met by a cheery chap called John who signed us in and gave us a warm welcome. Thanks John? Local players were friendly and made us feel welcome and in the field, hit taking was excellent with compliments on good shots? First impressions of the safe zone was'wow". It was well laid out, clean and organized. Built in toilet block, on site shop and an abundance of free tea and coffee ? Chrono station was nicely set up and doubled as a shooting range.(nice touch). Game play was simple but different with games played back to back. The terrain,I found, was very arduous and unforgiving with steep, loose climbs great for the gazelles and mountain goats among us but not much fun for arthritic tortoises like me lol. Plenty of well laid out cover and the building were amazing. Racked up my best kill rate including two bollock shots to the site photographer. His fault for pointing a camera at me and not wearing a hi Vis vest! ( I have promised to by a pic as way of apology) Marshals were friendly, approachable and put themselves about. Overall a great day but exhausting. Will definitely be going again. Thanks camouflage Airsoft ?and thanks @C-Diddyfor the heads up? regards

When it comes to swaps, if the other guy doesn't have a considerable online history, ie feedback/posts/time under his belt, he'll have to send his kit first, no excuses, once received I'll reciprocate & give suitable commendable feedback. For those who don't know: for some verification of online pics, people ask for you to write your name/username, today's date, etc. on a piece of paper, and scrunch it up before unfurling it and taking the photo -- the idea being that it's much harder to Photoshop or fake details on that, compared to someone holding up a flat piece of paper. Dude's obviously trying to get pics to he can post the image and make like they are "his" items to sell, most likely sending potential buyers sweet FA.

  21. Back from our second ever game at Spec Ops MK. Only did a half-day today as expected it to be hot and it's a good thing as my new boots have cut my heels to shreds, so was very much done by lunch. Turns out wearing them at your desk for a couple of hours doesn't count as a proper test. That aside, another good day of fun. Played a new game mode which involved rescuing a downed pilot (dummy) from the enemy camp. Hugely entertaining, especially when on the defending side as I managed to get a decent rate of kills. I think the game might need rebalancing though as I don't think anyone stood a chance of evac'ing the dummy, but who doesn't love a suicide mission. The boy had a good game with no injuries or mishaps, so at least one of us made it unscathed. He was, unusually for him, tired out by lunch so I'm assuming the heat has got to him. One more game to go before I'm UKARA registered which will simultaneously make the day rate cheaper but also meaning I empty my wallet on gun purchases. Have also realised I need something other than a bright red backpack to carry my gear and my £10 Asda jeans now have holes in the knees, so I'm open to suggestions on budget chest-rigs and trousers with knee-protection built in. Hello new hobby, good-bye fiscal responsibility.

  27. Well, only my second skirmish & loved it again & knackered again... Played 4 games over the day (there were more after I left) and pleased to say our team won all 4 of those, even happier that I got as many kills as I got shot in each game. Spent most of my last game laying in wait to defend our base from bombers & despite lots of inactivity from me I was still knackered. Met some other newbies & we were all knackered but still seemed to enjoy the day. In game 1 & 2 I ran my trustyish polymer Scar-L & wore a new MTP 'battle belt' with molle pouches & felt a difference in weight imediately compared to my ebay PLCE purchase, but as I'm 6'4" tall and just as wide I still found myself stranded like a turtle with a great view of the treetops & blue skies after a tactical roll, a couple of handfulls of grass later I was back on my belly doing my best to look more like a slow moving shrubbery. Unfortunately I broke the folding stock of my Scar after that as I face planted while 'attacking' so it'll have some tactical gaffa tape on it's next outing (sure I have some snipers tape in a cupboard somewhere). Games 3 & 4 I'd planned to use my G36 and wearing a tactical vest I'd kitted out with G36 mag pouches (if you know, you know), but the G36 wasn't playing ball at the chrono (was told it was prob coz the mid caps were too full (another lesson learned)), so I swopped the mags for M4's and ran the broken Scar-L instead (playing with a folded stock or a wobbly stock wasn't ideal). Conclusions from today...? I'll need to put less bb's in my g36 mags & think I'll bring some high caps too next time as I still want to try my G36, found out I prefer playing in a belt kit to a vest, the lunchtime burger was pretty good but the biggest lesson learnt was... don't dry fire in the safe zone to test the battery even without a mag in (SORRY folks, my bad).

That’s not the battery—that’s your replica having issues. The motor pulls back the piston. That’s it. Why would how fast you pull back the piston affect FPS in any way? It’s how fast the piston moves after the sector releases. A dirty barrel may cause lower FPS, but it can also cause higher FPS. It depends on what kind of “dirty” you’re talking about. For example, BB residue can cause a barrel to functionally become tighter, which increases FPS.

Yup the only thing that tickled my critical faculties was the fact the 'in stock' figure wasn't changing between sizes, and the large figures for those 'in cart' meaning most of the stuff should've sold out already. We'll reliably have more than 10 ghillies out of 70 - 80 players, and that's not including myself and my friend as we've ditched the ghillies for now, partially to practice camo and concealment skills but partially to make sure we can't be associated with any of it. 42. Sorry to have missed you there today (we went to Combat Airsoft in Thetford). Will be there next week though with several guests. Thetford was an excellent day. The pine forest setting was awesome, as was the (relatively) Close Quarter section we used for the starting games. I went for a wide flanking manoeuvre with a group of lads to try and get behind the blue team and push for domination. This meant a trek through the chest high Ferns resulting in me vanishing down a deep pothole much to the amusement of my squad mates following up behind. We got trounced by the red team all day, but it was still enjoyable. My L85 definitely needs some tech attention as the 1100 mAh battery was used up withess than ten magazines, and the noise it makes sounds like it is labouring on something. Once again the Specna performed better than any of the other pews we brought, although the DE held it's own for the Extraction game. Lots of Gillie suits there with very accurate face shots made a few pushes frustrating Had a fun chat with some US servicemen on the next table too.

  49. A lot of attention is paid towards various components when tuning performance in an AEG, but it seems piston head O-rings are often overlooked beyond merely testing that they seal against the cylinder. A typical piston head O-ring measures about 24mm outer diameter, like these ones: https://www.ak2m4.co.uk/internal-parts/pistons-heads/piston-head-o-ring-19.5mm https://www.ak2m4.co.uk/internal-parts/pistons-heads/piston-head-o-ring-viton-19mm However for some time now I've been wondering if it's actually better to use slightly smaller O-rings, somewhere around 23.7-23.8mm, or perhaps even a bit smaller than that (as close as possible to or just a tiny bit smaller than the diameter of the cylinder; if it's a tiny bit smaller the pressure ahead of the piston & air flow through the ports in the piston head should expand it to seal completely once it's moving at speed). The idea being to reduce losses due to friction and allow the piston to gain slightly more energy before compression begins. This is because a few years ago after performing maintenance on my TM P90RD and replacing the piston head O-ring that I thought was worn out with a new "good" one, I noticed it had lost a significant amount of power. Putting the "bad" O-ring back in put the power back up to where it was supposed to be... I subsequently discovered that while the "bad" O-ring didn't seal when tested the usual way (which is what made me initially conclude that it was bad), it would actually seal just fine when the piston was moving fast enough. I've since noticed this effect with my other guns too, although none of those have managed to reach the performance of my P90RD (which just about manages 340fps on an SP90 spring while the others do a little over 330). I recently decided to test this, so I bought some O-rings that are supposed to be 23.74mm outer diameter and have now tested them alongside some other piston head O-rings. The test gun is a TM P90TR with: ZCI 6.02mm barrel (247mm) Prometheus purple hop rubber & bucking (hop is not properly set but remained unchanged throughout the tests) Guarder air seal nozzle Guarder enhanced stainless steel cylinder head Guarder enhanced cylinder, 3/4 type Deep Fire aluminium piston head Tokyo Marui stock piston Guarder SP90 spring Deep Fire (I think) bearing spring guide Guarder steel bushings IRF2804 MOSFET Blade fuse Deans connector Each O-ring tested was given a very light surface coating of silicone oil before being coated in TechT Gun Sav and installed on to the piston head. Before testing the gearbox was cycled a few times without the upper receiver/barrel assembly to clear any excess grease out of the nozzle & prevent any finding its way into the barrel and risk affecting the results. BioSphere 0.2g BBs were used for testing, 10 shots were fired for each test and the average value used. These are the results (O-ring size measurements are approximate as they're never perfectly round): Lees Precision Engineering piston head O-ring 24mm (19mm inner diameter/2.5mm cross-section): 322 fps (min 319.6, max 323.5) This is a standard size good quality O-ring that comes with LPE piston heads, with the result being about what I expected. Deep Fire 'super' O-ring (measured ~23.8mm OD, 2.6mm cross-section): 332.6 fps (min 330.9, max 334.2) This is what came with the Deep Fire aluminium piston head that's currently in the P90TR. It is a brown colour and feels softer than most other O-rings in addition to being slightly smaller, and there is much less resistance when moving the piston through the cylinder. With this O-ring the gun has an extra ~10fps over the LPE O-ring. Uxcell "23.74mm (18.5mm/2.62mm)" O-ring #1 (actually ~23.9mm-ish): 322.9 fps (min 320.4, max 324.7) This is one of the O-rings I got recently specifically for these tests. I was very surprised by this result, so I checked its size and found that it was larger than specified - around 23.9mm OD. I then measured the rest of the O-rings in the pack and found that all of them measured closer to 23.9mm. I tried again with the smallest one I could find. Uxcell "23.74mm (18.5mm/2.62mm)" O-ring #2 (actually ~23.85mm-ish): 325.6 fps (min 323.1, max 328.3) This time there was a more notable improvement over the standard O-ring, but still not close to the performance of the Deep Fire O-ring. I next went through the O-rings in my spares box to find ones measuring towards the smaller end, and did manage to find a couple that were closer to the size I was looking for: Unknown origin O-ring #1 ~23.8mm (2.4mm CS): 333.3 fps (min 330.3, max 334.7) Unknown origin O-ring #2 ~23.8mm (2.4mm CS): 333.1 fps (min 331.5, max 334.7) These both are about the same size as the Deep Fire O-ring that performed very well, and their performance was about the same too... I was unsure how much of an effect O-ring size would have with a full cylinder & long barrel, so I then fitted a longer barrel to the P90TR to see if that makes any difference in the results, still using the Guarder enhanced 3/4 cylinder to begin with. The barrel is a 509mm unknown brand Chinese non-tightbore barrel (IIRC it originally came from my ~15 year old A&K M249). Ideally I would have used a ZCI tightbore to better compare against the ZCI barrel used in the earlier tests but I don't have one of those so I had to make do with this. LPE standard O-ring + 509mm barrel: 309.5 fps Deep Fire 'super' O-ring + 509mm barrel: 320.1 fps As with the earlier tests the standard O-ring is around 10fps lower than the smaller O-ring. The barrel being a cheap non-tightbore barrel probably accounts for most of the power loss seen here compared with the shorter barrel tests. Finally I put in a Guarder enhanced full cylinder to see how the O-rings compare in a long barrel + full cylinder setup: LPE standard O-ring + 509mm barrel + full cylinder: 321.7 fps Deep Fire 'super' O-ring + 509mm barrel + full cylinder: 318.1 fps Unknown origin O-ring #1 + 509mm barrel + full cylinder: 320.6 fps Interestingly, this time the Deep Fire O-ring actually performed slightly worse than the LPE O-ring. I was expecting that with the full cylinder all O-rings would perform about the same, maybe with the smaller O-rings having a slight advantage. I tried one of the unknown O-rings that was the best performer in the initial tests and while that was better it still had slightly lower performance with this configuration than the LPE O-ring. I'm not sure why this is, as they all form a seal right from the start... it may be that the smaller O-rings have more room to inflate against the cylinder and that with the lack of any significant acceleration phase prior to compression starting this costs some energy that otherwise would be used to propel the BB. Conclusions In builds using full cylinders the normal 24mm AEG piston O-rings would seem to be slightly better, although the difference doesn't seem to be that big. However in builds using ported cylinders it looks like it's better to use smaller O-rings, as was the case in both sets of results using the 3/4 cylinder. It can be difficult to find such O-rings though since most AEG piston O-rings are about 24mm and generic O-rings are typically only supplied in a standard set of sizes that are either slightly too big or slightly too small, and even if you can find some that are supposed to be ~23.7-23.8mm they're not likely to be made with such a high degree of precision, as I found out with the ones I bought. Anyway this might be something to keep in mind if you want to gain/lose a little power, or if you're just looking to maximise efficiency - it may not be a huge boost, but a potential 10+fps isn't insignificant and if done in conjunction with other small things that can be done to help boost fps this might be enough to allow the use of a weaker spring to achieve a given power level, which in turn will reduce stress on the rest of the system/improve reliability as well as slightly improve ROF and trigger response etc.
