  1. Whoring myself to PTS/Magpul continues, courtesy of Land Warrior this time (one of the better places for RS bits I'm finding). Not bought, but a buddy that worked at Spiritus for a few years in their earlier days was moving house and having a clear out; sent me these prototypes of what ended up as the LV-119 (oldest on the left, newest on the right).

  2. i finally managed to make it to RIFTs newest site this weekend, The Battery. as i knew it was going to be a CQB site, i decided my primary weapons for the day were going to be my new KWA Beretta M93r, my KWA GBB Skorpion and my John Wick hicappa and TM Lycoris Recoil pistols as my backups (alternating between primary and secondary throughout the day) but i took a couple of long guns such as my Tippmann in case they were needed, but ended up sticking with the short guns all day. i had purchased a bunch of mags for the m93 through RIFTs own shop, White Sphere Tactical, and arranged to pick them up on site... so once signed in it was off to collect the mags, bring kit into the indoor safezone. standard fare for chrono, but due to the CQB, ammo weight was limited to .28g. first game was team balancer and found that blue team was overly powerful, so as a lone wolf i got swapped onto red team with a handful of other players to balance the teams a little more. game modes through the day were all 30 min games with quick breaks in between for reloading, which wasnt an issue due to the relatively small size of the site. game modes included capturing ammo cans to HQ, moving a gas cylinder "bomb" to three capture points and capturing flag points around the site. TBH, not knowing the site, i was more focussed on just getting kills for the first half of the day, but i did help out with the objectives later in the day once i got more familiar with the site and my new guns. one thing i really need to look into is how to mount tracer units on the skorpion and M93, as these would DEFINATELY have helped in the indoor sections. i did have a bit of an oopsie moment (which i managed to turn to a win)... at one point a blue player was hiding behind some corrugated steel barricades at the bottom end of one of the yards, so i decided to charge the location, laying down fire with the m93 to keep the enemys head down as i crossed the open spaces. as i moved, the m93 gassed out (i think i reloaded the mag, but forgot to gas it.. oops..) so i quickly took the m93 in my left hand and drew my JW hicappa as i reached the barricade... where i hit a patch of mud, slipped over, fell into the barricade and as i slid past the edge of the barricade, managed to snap 2 shots off at the blue player, taking him out... after getting helped up, quickly checking my gear and fist bumping the blue player, i decided to call myself out to go and check my injuries and thoroughly inspect the guns and fortunately found the barrels were clear, so i was soon back out. and i was running a gopro on my helmet for the first time, so i might have caught my little fall on tape... in the process of downloading the footage as i type this message, so i should know in a few minutes.... EDIT i did indeed capture the incident on tape... https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/u1nsfc6n375ex1rm5ynb2/oopsie.mp4?rlkey=2rwbhjnlc7tm7ecp69fuvh75f&st=1sdak9fk&dl=0

The only thing that jumps out at me looking at these photos is you are supposed to leave a certain thickness of foam around each and every item, and also between them (also between layers), which can be as little as ~1 cm for lighter items to at least ~5 cm for bigger items, if you don't leave enough foam around the outer edges or have guns touching each other there won't be enough foam thickness to cushion an impact, in theory

  5. The folding stock latch is shallow on a CYMA, the pins are flat as well, and the pretend selector lever scratch is really thick on the CYMAs that have them, and thin on LCTs. The two other pictures I shared show the differences between an LCT and CYMA. First pic LCT, second a CYMA. There’s other differences of course, the wooden handguard will be different etc.

  7. yeah higher C is always better, I'd say most "airsoft sized" batteries don't actually have enough C (regardless of their marketing C) and will drop voltage as much as half during the initial surge current, so don't trust the C rating on the battery label, the capacity in mAh is probably a better indication of whether it can provide high actual C, so always get the highest mAh you can practically fit The Overlander VSRmini looks fine to me, it is a smart charger so it should do more than good enough job, any charger with a screen and has a few buttons for navigating menus and adjust settings is a smart charger, needless to say smart is almost always better than dumb

  16. bottom half of the belt feed mech is getting there though I still need to build in a way to attach the box mag / mag adapter. Still tweaking the hpa adapter but it now only seems to leak from the bolt holes, the top half is entirely sealed so it may just be a matter of getting a metal one so I can better seal the threads. Decided for the vn mags ill be mounting it so they come in at an angle just below the feed ramp on the side so that the hanging belt can hide the end of it. should also mean I can get lower to the ground. I had a beaten up old tm g3 bipod and the hk21e bipod seems to use the same latch mechanism so i just chopped it a little shorter and made a new block for the top of it so it can slide into the handguard caps.

    Battery Question

Yes it has IR function. Chargers haven't got better in a long time, so there's lots of good ones out there. Cabling is often an issue but if all your batteries have the same plug it won't matter. XT60 for the win. If you test the battery when new, fully charged, then test occasionally will see the battery decline over time. Useful for comparing know good batteries to any new ones you get.

    Which MP7?

I'll now bore you to death, though, I've a fair bit of experience with GBB MP7 brands (minus KWA). VFC - You should only really stick to the Gen2 (most if not all retailers stock them now unless you get shafted in a dodgy sale). It's full scale with all the proper trades to make people like me happy and it performs very nicely out of the box. It can mag-dump on auto however don't expect the best when its colder. The internals are relatively straight forward and they're fine longevity wise as long as you don't abuse them. There is also the infamous "rear plate crack", as to which seems the only common problem so far, however, VFC sell replacements and aftermarket aluminium ones are available, though, as long as you stick to propane all year long it shouldn't give you any grief. My only personal dislikes are the rather sloppy controls (whilst all MP7's are mushy this one seems to be worse) and the hop unit is very twitchy when using lower weight BB's, though it may be a me problem. The magazine baseplates (and the nub on the follower that keeps it in place) are also incredibly flimsy so try not to drop them. If you do end up breaking a nub, you can drill a small 2mm hole and insert a 2.5mm plug (can just be ground flat) tap into it, then add a small M2.5mm grub screw into it (ideally with some Green Loctite). Tokyo Marui - The TM is pretty much one of the all timers in terms of GBB SMG's. Whilst it comes with the correct trading, it is 8% smaller than the VFC (or its real counterpart). I don't mind it as it makes it just a little more tactile and the magazines fit in my pouches easier, however, people with large hands and gloves may struggle slightly. Performance wise, its more than likely the best you'll ever get as its punchy, has a decent range and accuracy and it will pretty much auto mag-dump any time of the year. Internally, there is the infamous "inside shell crack". This can be prevented by using the sling swivel (which absorbs and dissipates energy from the bolt) and keeping the gas on propane or 144a- my one went on for over 2 years with little sign of wear/damage. If you get it, you will more than likely notice it as the gun with either become very unpredictable when it fires, or just stop working completely, and there's not much you can do about it. There's no spares and no real way to repair it. I also noticed that the bolt catch would only work with the stock collapsed after about a year. My personal dislikes don't go too far with it, I'm not a fan of the reverse bolt release and the weight as to which is can hop is quite limited (about a 0.28g) max. The piston cup would also swell a lot, causing jams. There were suggestions to just dump a load of silicone oil into it, but whilst it works, its unhealthy for pretty much every other aspect of the gun and it doesn't last long. WE SMG8 + Rice MP7 - The SMG8 undoubtedly is quite an ugly sight. It's quite cumbersome and clunky. Performance wise its quite crap. It'll get by fine on semi but auto mag-dumps are quite an achievement to complete, and it really will not like the cold. The hop unit is not the best and its quite hard to adjust sometimes (it also requires a tool). Aside from that, it's efficient enough. The Rice MP7 is also fine, it feels a bit nicer and its a little more user friendly. It performs well enough to be enjoyable, and it can auto-dump, but certainly not greatly. It will handle relatively cold temperatures but don't expect much. The range is a little rubbish and the accuracy is fine. These 2 MP7s are prone to breakdowns quite often, as they are internally made of the finest cheese, however, should you identify a broken part, WE have used all the worlds natural resources to create every spare part so you can easily just replace it and keep chugging along, which I suppose is rather nice, though, its much more of a headache than the potential issues that arise from the TM or the VFC (though the headache a TM gives when its broken is arguably worse). Basically just get a VFC or a TM and don't ramp up the gas pressure, you should be fine.

  27. While I agree with the logic behind this, I don't get to play as often as I'd like due to other things taking priority so I'd rather spend my limited time and money going to games I know I'll enjoy rather than paying to spend a weekend wet, miserable and bored Filmsim sounds like a good balance between the two

  28. This is the best idea. Never miss an opportunity to have fun because someone on the internet said something negative. Worst case you spent some time and money on learning what you like and dislike about what airsoft has to offer. Best case you meet some nice people who want to get out of airsoft the same sorts of things you do, you get home and immediately start looking to see what the next event you can do is. If you can find a local site doing a 24h(+) game* then it can't hurt to check that out even if just for the sake of your sleeping kit. But broadly I recommend going to games which are put on my organisers who focus on hosting these types of games. Logistically speaking a game at an urban venue is a gentler introduction than one in the woods, but then again don't let that hold you back either. *I don't think the term "milsim" is a good one but that's something for another time.

  32. Agreed. At least on a regular skirmish I can ignore the gobby idiot if their idea is clearly bollocks. Also I get the impression many milsims are pay to win or are more like larping to a set story line.

  33. Milsims are too serious for my taste. Too many walts and weekend warriors preening over their authenticity and immersion, while playing toy soldiers in the woods. I play for fun, not to have orders barked at me by a guy who suddenly got a small amount of power.

  35. The G&G mid caps are notorious for not feeding in their own guns. I'd suggest either PTS EPM mags (not the EPM1s) or - hear me out - Nuprol mags.

  36. Well, yesterday at Red Alert was our 4th, and final, Battlesim in the Vukodlak war story line. The past three years Vukodlak forces have been victorious. Having played for Vukodlak in previous years, this year I decided to marshal which, as with many battlesims, meant playing as a civilian/quest giver. I spiced it up by playing as a pirate. I was giving out quests to find my lost parrot. There were 3 inflatable parrots hidden about the site, but I had drawn an eye patch on one, and in my quest spiel I mentioned that Polly only had one eye. If they brought back the parrot with the eye patch they got a reward. I also had a bottle of grog, which got hidden, and there was a reward if they brought me "alcohol". The main objective of the day was to find all the items needed to arm a rocket, and then launch it. The rocket is something I've been building recently, but kept off of social media so it would be a surprise for the players on the day. There were two nose cones, one for each team, a round one and a pointy one (pointy is scary). Other civilians had other quests. The drug dealers were selling bags of stuff, for in game currency. This could be handed in to the sheriffs for a reward, or bartered with other npcs. There was the Hobo wandering the site with his wheelbarrow full of junk, but underneath the junk was a laptop that contained the launch codes. Driving around in his pickup was the arms dealer. He would sell you weapons that you could plant on any unarmed civilians you may have shot, and thereby avoid a war crime. 😉 The Camels wanted water, mostly... Some civilians were mercs, that would fight for a team for short time, if paid well. At the end of the day Vukodlak were victorious AGAIN, despite some excellent play from the Calladian forces. It was a bloody marvellous day, that ended with both teams wearing massive grins and swapping stories over a beer. So roll on 2025, for a whole new story for our next battlesim! Unfortunately a lot of people had already gone home before we took the last photo after debrief.
