ECWCS - Exwax Keeps you warm

Due to a philosophical debate with my wife (which I won) I had the opportunity to sleep in the shed last night. I used the time to think about gear as it’s more important than emotional intelligence. Darn it! We nearly blended in. The US military ECWCS - Extended Cold Weather Clothing System. There is a new acronym that involves “warfighter” for the kiddies as well. The system comes in various generations, currently 1-3. There are material and component changes along the way but Gen 1 and 2 stuff is typically Woodland with Gen 3 in UCP and OCP. Wiki ECWCS page I am going to start with the most important bit, the Modular Sleep System.2 points -

GHK AKS 74U in superb condition, looks pretty much like like new having only been used for a bit of plinking in the garden. Complete with original box. £575 collected or may post. Very hard to find, these don't come up to often. The last batch of these that a UK dealer had for sale were £700 + P&P.£575

ECWCS type 1 & 2 boots I don’t have so can’t cover much. Main contractor was BATA but also Acton and Airboss. Draw backs from some accounts are: 1) Weight (1..25 to 1.5kg ish). 2) Tread isn’t modern Vibram. 3) The white ones are disco…. Good things are: 1) Warmth (-30C or -60C) aprox. As an aside. The felt USAF mukluk liners work as bed socks or for when you are in your arm chair smocking a pipe. 😉2 points -

I have a BattleAxe magwell adapter in a JG G36, it seems "airsoft universal" in that it very nearly fitted and just needed about 10 minutes with a file on the inside and outside to get the magwell into the gun, and M4 mags into the magwell. Now they feed better than G36 midcaps ever did, although there's a fair few inside the adapter feed that will never feed into the hop - I've got into the habit of flipping it upside down when changing mags. I'd agree that £180 is waaaaay too much for the JG. Looks like PatrolBase were flogging them for an absolute bargain £88 but are of course out of stock. I can't speak to the other makes, or even how the JGs perform now, as I bought mine from an earlier batch with an adjustable spring tensioner which is super useful for tuning between sites and BB weights, but seems to be an idea that's come and gone. Stock performance was OK, and the consistency with a Maple Leaf 60 degree and ZCI barrel is fine for CQB and OK (but not perfect) for woodland. With a Big Dragon M140, 11.1V and a Perun AB++ it'll burst fire as fast (or faster) than the mags can feed. As a point of personal perverse pride, I've never opened the gearbox, even to shim or re-grease, just spooged some silicone up the nozzle and some chainsaw oil into the shell - you can solder a mosfet to the trigger tabs outside the shell. It Just Workstm. If I were buying now, I'd probably feature-whore out on the "Specna" for the QC spring and the EBB.2 points -

^^ That's what I have believed, iirc there was a brief period the non sportline Umerex became the S&T too, had some quality issues and then went back to Ares, quite believable the trades could be underneath Specna ones if it was a run intended for Umerex... or they were too cheap to change the molds, same goes if they're just the sportline models not branded as Umerex HK too. The WE one is not too common, but I've heard is fantastic, basically the best of the Ares (externals and better replica / more real steel compatibility) with the normal V3, at that price i'd go with the everytime, extra cool points it's the K length too, and not the typical G36C. It's pretty tricky to buy a bad G36 these days, the 'worst' replica for external quality is the JG 608 models, but the internals are a tank, will run forever, everything else is basically an improvment. Best TM spec externals imo is the Classic Army, but the internals kinda cheese, basic V3 though so easy to tech. There's a few oddballs like the G&G and ICS which have some unique bits, but are still pretty great replicas.2 points -
2x Swat VTG. Been looking for some timed re-usable pyro for indoors games but they were always out of stock everywhere and the used ones were completely battered, some even had chunks missing from the bodies of the grenades. They should arrive tomorrow, can't wait to test them out. FifeWargames look like they had a small restock of Swat VTGs but they're only in black so I may have to find some luminous paint or bands so I don't lose them in a dark corner.2 points

Pretty sure S&T is the OEM for the Specna G36s. The also OEM some of the 'sportline' H&K licensed guns for Umarex along with the ARX-160. No ETU in Specna guns - it's shit marketing talk for 'microswitch trigger'. Full breakdown of the Specna G36 internals can be found here WE (yes that WE) make an AEG G36 that looks pretty nice available here for £170 - bog standard V3 internals but better plastics and construction compared to JG et al.2 points -

They claim it shoots at 250-300fps, out to 40m. Camo it up and skirmish it properly At a £135 I can't see the Specna getting knocked off it's perch at the top of the "most favoured" tree. I just need to time it right so the wife doesn't get too upset1 point -

Tactical Pith Helmet reacted to The Waco Kid for a topic
No, military cold weather kit isn’t generally “skirmishable” in the UK. * (see below). It would have to be incredibly cold to play in ECWCS kit of any generation. Militaries certainly operate in pretty extreme conditions using it. Probably talking sub -20C. But that may not mean fighting. There is the aspect that simply being able to function in those conditions when your enemy can’t means you effectively “win” without even having to fire a shot. It would have to be pretty bad for an infantryman to choose to enter a fight wearing a gore-tex parka. They are just too noisy for starters. Other bits maybe. A heavish windproof but quiet British type smock works very well and is probably still the best outer for poor weather 90% of the time. I my “youth” I was an winter climber for fun and did farm labouring for work. It would have to be absolutely sheeting it down before going to an actual waterproof layer. For purely cold I loved Buffalo kit. But that is incredibly hot and you had to vent it if active. For work a ‘95 smock, thermal shirt and wool pulley was fine. Tweed was for the higher orders! * So why is it kit like ECWCS useful for skirmishing? 1) Milsim / Battlesim. We are all larpers after all! 2) Events or over nighters. 😴 🔥 🍲 🚽 🥶 and 3) How much time at your average skirmish day is actually not in game? There is a lot of standing around. A lot of sites it is 90 minutes plus from doors open to game on. Note: MSS update. The bladder was calling so I had to get up. Bit of frost starting on the bag but no condensation, -5C. I put on M65 pants. Otherwise fine but my back remembers why I usually kip in a hammock!1 point -

The Specna is not an Ares clone, it is an Ares. Specna do not make rifs. I even read somewhere that under the Specna trades which are stuck on are the Ares / Umarex HK Licensed trades. I have the tan Umarex one and the polymer feels great and the ebb is fun, though can be easily decommissioned if desired.1 point

I should have mentioned - I already bought an M4 adapter off the classifieds here... I've got too many STANAG mags of various types to want to go for yet another set, so will that likely fit anything I buy or are they manufacturer-specific? (It's not an expensive mistake if I've got the wrong one) There's a Specna at Patrolbase. It has EBB which I presume will break pretty quickly, but it does have the advantage of an ETU (so presumably I can (ab)use it with an 11.1v lipo) and a quick change spring, which are both very useful, I think. And it's a sensible £150 too.1 point -
Great decision, g36 platform is a joy The JG is super solid, but as you say is quite high in price for a budget gun, the base Cyma and high speed are both great too. Another option to look at is the specna arms ones, they're an Ares clone with ebb, not exactly TM spec but there's plenty of parts out there too.1 point

Went out to D23 yesterday. Indoor CQB... just how I like it. Pretty good numbers. For some reason they split teams down the room which meant around 8 kids on my half ended up on my team which made up around half the team with 0 on the other. But that aside we still seemed pretty evenly matched. Winning around 50% of games for each team. And the ones we one were won by a long shot. Had great fun running the shadow 2 for the first time. Got countless kills with it. The best being on 'mainstreet madness'. A mad head to head dash up one lane where you can get tagged back in infinite times. First team to oppositions starting wall wins. We had them suppressed hard and with what I thought was just a few players left I made a dash for their wall. As I passed their cover points there were 3 behind one wall 5 behind the next and 2 behind the second to last, in which I took them all out with the Shadow. Buzzing hard I ran for the wall but the final piece of cover had one guy holding back who took me out 2 meters from victory! Thankfully 2 comrades close behind took him out and grabbed victory. By far the most successful streak I have achieved which left me high the rest of the day. The Shadow 2 performed flawlessly and I would say matches, if not supersedes the accuracy of my MWS. And my god does it kick on CO2! So happy with it and will be with me every game from now on. Once I get a few spare mags might even try some pistol only games it's that good.1 point -

Ima throw these around on the field a few times first before I start making them fancy. Thats one of the major benefits of having your own printer - you can make a new shell for like 2 quid or something. If they hold up I may look into making them look more visually accurate.1 point -
Updated my ww1 uniform end of last month. Using information supplied to me by my local museum, I have made and added unit identifier patches to signify A company, 7th service battalion Northamptonshire regiment of the 24th infantry division, to make the uniform look less plain, though I may need to trim the yellow saltire down a little.. I even have a pair of original brass "Northapton" shoulder titles on the shoulder tabs and an original Northamptonshire regiment cap badge on my cap (though it may need relocating slightly to sit flush on my cap) 1908 webbing needs minor adjustments to fit better, and I have had to make a concession and add a 37 pattern webley holster so I can carry a sidearm, as my Lee enfield has been upgraded and now has a MED.1 point
-
Finally got a holster and a shit load of CO2 for my Shadow 2 that I got in November so I can skirmish it tomorrow for the first time. I haven't ran a sidearm yet, so excited to finally put it to use. Some say you never need them... But at my local indoor CQB site there are several extremely tight stairwells with corners at the top/bottom where my 14" Barrel just won't go around and I have to drop the business end meaning there have been numerous times I just cant get a shot on someone. Lost count the amount of times I couldn't engage on said stairwells and had to shamefully walk back to respawn. Now I have been dealt an equal hand 😁1 point

"Downed Airman" Vietnam kit is just about done - close enough to share at least. I still need a faithful shotshell pouch and due to the EPM-1S mags being taller than standard 20 rounders I need to either get 30 round mag pouches or general small arms mag pouches - still undecided on those. Also waiting for helmet parts to arrive - some missing bolts, fresh straps and foam, etc but none of that is visible so itll look the same as it does now. Ill actually play with it with the visor up and proper eyepro instead, but for pics visor down is Ace.1 point -

Radios... What do you recommend?
The Waco Kid reacted to Rogerborg for a topic
The Baofeng BF-88E aka BF-888S PMR comes pre-set to a law-friendly 500mW, tuned to PMR frequencies, and look to take Kenwood K plug accessories, so you can fill your boots with PTT gubbins. It seems that you can reprogram it to other frequencies, and to 2kW, using a programming cable, but that requires deliberate action. As stock, they do appear to be PMR compliant. https://www.baofengradio.co.uk/bf-888s-pmr446/ If you're using unlicensed radios without an assigned frequency, I'd respectfully disagree. Nobody should, of course, just like we should never own anything that's notionally capable of auto-shooting any missile at over 1.3J. But if you are broadcasting at over 500mW, and you're not sure what you're doing, then I'd suggest that you should stick to PMR frequencies, because them you're not going to conflict with anyone or anything that actually matters.1 point -
