Nobody said it was illegal to buy, or to own, a RIF. It's an offence to sell, to import (or cause to be imported), or to manufacture a RIF, or to modify an IF into a RIF. The same offence applies to everyone. The same defences apply to everyone. In practice it's simply not enforced on anyone, retail or private, anywhere except at point of entry to the UK. But this isn't Facebook or Reddit where confidence and VOLUME hold sway. In the law section here, we cite and discuss statutes, regulations and case law.4 points

Not technically correct, shops, like any seller, are required to be satisfied the buyer has a defence according to the vcra, obviously for shops ukara is the easiest, but not the only "paper" defence, some legitimate, some slightly shady. When it comes to private sales, some sellers are adamant they'll only accept ukara, but ultimately it's about convincing a seller that you're a legitimate player, something I've been able to do even though I haven't had ukara for more than a decade. That is of course on the rare occasion a sellers asks for proof of a defence, most just want to see the colour of your money 😏4 points

DIY thermal fusion optic
ButcherBill and 2 others reacted to Mini airsoft for a topic
Hey all, I've been working on a personal DIY project—a thermal fusion optic inspired by the Holosun DRS-TH (thermal + red dot overlay). Just to be clear: I'm not a manufacturer or retailer, and this is not for sale or part of any crowdfunding. I'm simply building this as a hobby project because I'm curious about the tech. It’s still an early prototype, but I’d love to get your thoughts—if something like this were to work reliably, what do you think a fair price might be in the market? Just curious how people would value this kind of setup. Appreciate any feedback or suggestions! 1000305399.mp4 mmexport1748572874921.mp43 points -

I look at it the other way, milsim is meant to be based on warfare irl, & breaking in to your enemies comms is a very real thing irl. But, as you've said, most airsofters use comms for banter & piss taking, very little professional use, bit like knobs with taclights at night games, they usually do more harm than good to their own team🤣/🤬3 points -

For me, it’s people who message with questions, do you still have, what’s your best price etc etc. You answer, then hear nothing, sometimes it shows as not even read. I don’t mind if I don’t sell the item, but can’t stand rudeness. Why ask if you can’t even be bothered to read the answer. 🤬2 points

Got this from Defcon Airsoft, it's a Double Bell so nothing fancy & is unlikely to ever see any gameplay. It's a base AR for a Colt 9mm SMG build, I'm not a thread counter so I'll get it as close as I can without getting stupid. Got a gas deflector to rattle can then fit, inner barrel to cut down (where's my dremel?) and the mag release to cut flush in the magwell then Bob's your auntie & Fanny's your craddock.2 points -

A rather nice set of combats in a Chinese Type 81 camo pattern - 'Tactical Toms' - the quality seems excellent, and the sizing is rather European which caught me out a little. Should be pretty good for lush summer woodland. Quite a fun pattern which I understand was inspired by British DPM originally when it first appeared in the very late 1970's/early 1980's. Oh, and a cheeky Cyma MP5SD. I've plans to pop a Mancraft inside it that is currently unused within one of my M4s, and put a full stock on to turn it into the SD5 version. I must say, out of the box it seems superb, one of the quietest running gearboxes I've encountered and very snappy for a non-mosfet gun.2 points -
Selling RIFs - VCRA Defence/UKARA Checks?
Rogerborg and one other reacted to Cannonfodder for a topic
So confident and yet so wrong. Private sales are subject to the same laws as shops, whether or not private sellers are as strict as shops is a different matter. You're right that a defence isn't needed for ownership but that's not what we're discussing here. UKARA isn't the only defence and nor is it a legal requirement. A seller just has go be satisfied that the buyer is using it to play airsoft hence why on site shops can sell to players without a site membership. If the vcra was a person it would be old enough to drink in pubs and vote. How are people still getting this wrong?2 points -

In truth nothing is foolproof. I've been to places that give you ammo, tag your RIF etc but there would be nothing stopping me turning up an NPAS or similar in the field. I played first time round about 20 years ago, then got back into it recently, and I've never been spot-checked in the field. The only thing I've ever seen that was lairy was at DogTag last summer: a guy chronoed as a DMR (he was right in front of me in the queue), then in the field I clocked he was firing full-auto. I told a marshall, they spoke to him and reported back to me that he had turned off the semi-lock on his mosfet. They sent him home instantly. I do some marshalling at a site in the SE when I'm free and often run the chrono. Do the same checks in the chrono, tag the RIFS (and regs for HPA) then eyeball everyone out of the safezone to make sure everything is marked up. When I go out into the gaming area, I take a chrono out in my pocket and I have spot-checked people. I've yet to come across anyone doing anything silly like adjusting power post-chrono.2 points

I can't think why you can't run a LiPo as long as it's a 7.4V. You can run 11.1V on an AEG without a MOSFET/ETU though you run a higher risk (not a guarantee) of needing to rebuild or service your gun more regularly. I use a LiPo exclusively on one of my 20+ year old AEGs that doesn't have a MOSFET/ETU since its NiMh batteries lost most of their charging capacity years ago. Personally, I recommend LiPo over NiMH every time as long as you use a balance charger and keep an eye on your batteries when they're charging.2 points

Should more sites weigh the bbs during chrono?
Cannonfodder and one other reacted to JVacation for a topic
That's not true. If you turn up to the chrono and say you are using a 0.2g; the fps limit will the be 350 with joules at 1.13j and that's what the person doing the chrono will be checking. If you have a mag of 0.32g instead which is firing at 350 fps the joules is at 1.82j Unfortunately it happens2 points -

I'm with @Tackle on this. I'd be more okay with it in milsim than walk on play. At milsim, it's supposed to be closer to real life (after all, it does stand for military simulation) and you already have people showing up with more expensive comms setups, NVGs and thermals, drones, sometimes even vehicles. If you bring someone on your team who can intercept the level of comms that most airsofters are using, then that's just part of the milsim, same as if you roll up on a squad at night who don't have any NVGs while your team is all decked out with fancy gen3 goggles and thermal imaging devices. Is it fair? No, but it's the way it is (and it's one of a number of reasons I avoid milsims) Skirmish days you're going to get a whole lot of different people. You're going to get casual comms users, people who only use them to shit talk each other, people just starting out and testing out their brand new Baofengs with each other etc. Honestly, I'd be annoyed if someone was going to intercept and break into my comms at a skirmish day because I'm just there to vibe with my friends, maybe practice some scout sniper tactics and do some basic reconnaissance stuff. I'm not trying to be super serious, and I'm more focused on the other fieldcraft stuff than having ironclad secure comms and don't want to start having to teach the small handful of other people I'm on radio with a secret code language because some tryhard showed up to a skirmish day with the means to intercept comms. I'd view it in the same way as if someone brought a thermal scope to a skirmish day. If someone just flat out gets hold of your frequency through loose lips, then you deserve it, though I still think it's a dick move at skirmish and I still think that flipping through frequencies to try and brute force guess someone else's frequency is also a dick move. My anecdote comes from a place of setting up a frequency with some of the basic security features on the Baofeng (CTCSS settings for example) and then keeping it to a tight knit group of, at best, around 6 people at max. Can it be intercepted? I'd be surprised if it couldn't be as I'm no cybersecurity specialist, but at the skirmish level it should be more than sufficient2 points -
In reality it is quite easy to cheat the chrono by just saying you are using a different bb weight than you are actually using. Some sites make you chrono and then take a single bb from the mag you used and weigh it. I understand it would take longer but it is something that would be good to see become the "standard". Thoughts?1 point

Which pistol ?
Cannonfodder reacted to Impulse for a topic
Honestly, just go with whichever you prefer the look of. TM pistols (assuming you're talking about the TM ones) are all really reliable and you don't need to do anything to them for them to shoot pretty damn well. Just leave it stock and it will last you seemingly forever.1 point -
From recent experience, that claim about selling/buying is inaccurate. With the boot sales at Shift Your RIFTs, the organisers said in no uncertain terms that private sellers have a responsibility to ensure that buyers have a valid defence to buy a RIF as the event was open to any Tom, Dick or Harry who may have sinister intentions and not just regular airsofters or novices looking to play on a regular basis. As Tackle & Rogerborg said, while checking a defence with private sales is in the minority of cases in practice and it's seldom enforced at a retail or private level when the RIF is already in the UK, shouting about your claims doesn't make them correct. The litmus test of your claim is that if enforcement of defence checking happened overnight, you'd find a lot of private sellers could be prosecuted no matter how much you shout that a defence is "not needed".1 point

For a regular sunday skirmish I can't see the point as even if you do pick up something useful about what one group are doing it won't tell you anything about the what the rest of the other side are doing. It also puts your side 1 gun down and as it would need to be done away from any firefights you won't have overall situational awareness making the player as useful and welcome as a fart in a spacesuit. For milsim I can imagine it could be useful if done right, but as they're already pay to win this would only make me avoid them even more1 point -

Yes, totally agreed with spot checking. Especially with the transition from a cool morning to a warm/hot afternoon, I have seen some GBBR users go above the limit in the spot check despite passing the chrono test. There was one HPA user who gave a marshal a bit of grief over being asked to ensure his regulator was locked when the marshal noticed it hadn't been after passing him on the test.1 point

Nope, it comes with (or at some point came with) a NIMH battery, as some CYMAs do. Bin it and go to 7.4V lipo, there's no reason to use steam powered tech.1 point

I'd be ok with it, for no reason other than as far as i've ever seen there are only 2 types of comms you'll get in a skirmish: 1. People who forget they have radios and hardly ever talk 2. People that announce every single little thing they're doing like they're narrating a minecraft lets play And in both cases i suspect you wont get much information that can be used to your advantage. As for milsims, unless part of the sim is specifically targeted as "we're pretending we have military grade encrypted comms" i'd also see it as fair game.1 point -

UKARA are ONLY needed by shops. If buying or selling a rif privately they are NOT NEEDED. A UKARA OR DEFENCE is only to cover the SHOP'S back simples. At the end of the day it is NOT ILLEGAL to own a rif it's only illegal for a shop to sell one without a UKARA.1 point

Strikeforce CQB in Gloucester today. Hadn't visited in a while, So I thought I'd check in on one of their Thursday games. It was quite packed today, (makes sense, half term) with around thirty of us, and we got in a good 3 games in the 7pm to 10pm. A lot of hire kits, But everyone was all good fun. Only an acceptable amount of blue on blue today. Started with CTF, Went pretty well. Looks like they moved the objectives around again. Took us around 40 mins, Had a break. Second was an interesting game where both teams had to seek out boxes with their colours on scattered around the place, If you found a box with your colour on, Bring it up to 'embassy' (raised corridor and rooms, About 15m long, 2 ladder stairs either end). Twist is, Each team has one half of the embassy each to drop their boxes. If the other team can make it to the other end, They can steal any opposite team boxes. And guess which team didn't have anyone with pyros. After attempting to retake the embassy for 40 or so minutes, Round was over. And third was attack/defend, Attackers had unlimited lives and all, Defenders had to move back and area when hit, Until all were out. Wasn't super well conveyed where we had to fall back to, But marshall was there guiding defenders. Very fast paced, One guy on the opposite side had a ridiculous amount of pyros, Felt like enduring a mortar attack. Switched around sides after 20 mins, I called it a day during our attack. Gas mask was drenched even with my new DIY antifog, Caffeine had worn off and my ears were ringing. Staff were good, Briefing was good, Looks like all the hirers got sorted out with good kit quick. It did take a bit longer than I'd have liked to get back to playing after breaks, But it's perfectly expected with the amount we had today, Staff handled it great. Was a small incident with a guy blind firing down stairs during round 2 (reportedly not taking hits, But you know it goes with that), Marshals sorted it out great, Just had a small talk with the dude, And on we went. Overall, Brilliant CQB site still, Very competent staff, Not too speedsofty, And good crowd. And sorry for the Hoover dam of text.1 point -
