Except that every penny we spend will leave our economy, and we'll always be an importer.  Tooling up would have allowed us to become an exporter, at least in theory - although our recent track record isn't great. I'm sure the poor bloody infantry will be happier being issued a decent system that actually works rather than a great one that doesn't (bites tongue on Ajax rant).

The reality is that it'll be lucky if HM Armed forces gets 100,000 units - the R&D and setup/tooling costs alone of a bespoke UK design will run into double-digit millions of pounds - which has to be spread over the production run and factor into the per unit cost - so it's only feasible if there's an export customer. And the SA80 was great a export success....oh wait...

Then there's the Civil Servants that will stick their oar in - so any platform designed will be over-budget, under-deliver and only function every other Thursday.

Buying 'off the shelf' makes way more sense right now - even if the UK doesn't own or build the design.

This. Having seen how badly the civil service wastes money, especially when it comes to procurement, I'm surprised the country can afford anything these days

It's not really a case of how many or what cost. The UK needs to be seen to be building the rifles in the UK after being burned in the past with limited or removed support for a foreign product that wan't used in the way they wanted us to use it. A couple of examples would be Comms during the Falklands and Helicopters not having software support and being grounded for years. Can't have a rifle that you can't get spares parts for just because the seller doesn't like the war you are fighting.

My main concern is we don't design it ourselves as we will just end up with another EM2 but in 6.8mm. Ideally we should grab a bunch of German scientists and build a rocket that will reach the moon...oops sorry, I meant hire a bunch of weapon design specialists from a country that actually builds and uses guns and then patent the design.

France has a long history or doing their own thing when it comes to military smallarms, but even they are changing to H&K(not sure if they'll build under license or buy in). Personally I expect the UK will go down the AR15 family route as parts & equipment are easily sourced from many suppliers in many countries.

Time will tell if the USA forces change to the new caliber for NATO but I don't think other NATO countries are as easily swayed as they were in the 50's & 60's.

My issued kit was the L1A1, loved it, awesome big hitting battle rifle, but I was out before the L85 reared it's ugly head, but when it did I immediately thought why the feck are we messing about with an unproven design when armalites were proven, licensed by our biggest allies, & pretty cheap too, win win, but oh no, people that have feck all to do with actually using the end product stick their noses in, & the rest is history.

🤬

While the AR-15 is now a proven weapon system alot of people forget the many problems the yanks had with the early versions in Vietnam, from parts cracking to failures to eject spend cartridges. The difference is that they didn't take 15 years before getting round to fixing it

That's the point, by the time they were talking about the L85, the bugs were long sorted in the armalites.

Not unlike Airsoft, rush in to pre-ordering any new model first gen rif at your peril lol

Oops I accidentally posted that before I'd finished, that's the trouble with not having enough coffee on the night shift 😁

I agree it's far more prudent to go with a system which is proven and any problems are identified and fixed, rather than something shinny new and unproven. Especially when people's lives are at stake

From the pictures this might look like not a bad deal till you read the description and realise half of it isn't listed. Also I'm sure I've seen the pic with the pistols in the cardboard box

here before

Edit: I had seen it before, on his previous listing

I do not normally post here, but this advert was brought to my attention.  It does seem optimistic pricing when a new gun and 7 mags is around £650.  Using 2/3 rule of thumb for second hand would be around £450 or am I missing something?

Love the "basically new, ONLY used a handful of times" (during which he may have fired 10k bb's lol)

I wonder if the assorted 'upgrades' are the reason its faulty...... that said the bare faced cheek of selling a non working Dytac for 350 is impressive in its own way.....

It always reminds me of a TM MP5 I bought not knowing it had been fiddled with. A local tech sorted a wiring issue and fitted a new hop rubber, said it shot really well. Chronoed it at a game and never used it... next time I tried lo and behold it wouldn't fire more than 20 metres, if it even fed...

If it was stock I'd never have had all the issues I did with the "upgrades"

Hey, it's that guy who lives at the imaginary McDonalds up the goat track in the middle of nowhere again.  This smells fishier than a trawler's orlop.

A Ghk ak - which has dubious qc to start with

And a seller with the proven technical abilities of a drunk baboon

Whats not to love …….

This advert is also either making the buyer pay a hidden fee for using PayPal, or breaking their terms of service if the advert is implying to pay cash or bank transfer for collection. PayPal has a no surcharge policy in their terms of service, not that it would really be enforceable.

You must pay the postage and PayPal fees or collect from W London.

It seems pretty weak to not just factor the PayPal fees into your sales price and it's what most people do.

When Gunfire and TaiwanGun started surcharging for PayPal, I ratted them out made a "concerned customer" report in a fit of pique.  I wonder if they're still doing it.

It's reassuring used airsoft don't seem to have any obvious way of reporting dodgy adverts...

There's a "Contact us", but since they didn't even take down the advert purporting to be a real Glock after I reported it that way, I doubt that there's any sort of actual moderation.

Says looking for but is a sale ad, look at that price for an MP9! You're having a bubble 🤣 (Obviously not a real sale ad but still the price does qualify it for Mack's)
