Guns That Aren't as Popular as They Should Be....

figured this might be a fun little topic to entertain us while we're sitting wishing we could go shooting.

we're all aware of guns that are popular for various reasons, and we're all aware of guns that are unpopular due to looks, rarity, proprietary parts or poor performance/bad manufacturers.

but what guns do we think are under-appreciated in airsoft? something that's seldom seen for no good reason? why do you think it should be more popular?

i'll start off with the dragonuv, it's not the rarest gun out there and you do see them popping up in the wild occasionally, but as DMR type platforms go it's nowhere near as common as your long barreled m4's, m14's, sr25's etc.

thing is, it's a svelt gun, you can take the style wherever you want from a classic wooden 50's look right up to completely modernised. aftermarket parts may be limited but they are available (particularly combat union hops) and there are versions to suit any pocket (anything from cyma to WE to real sword).

a close second goes to the g36, although at least this one it's rarity is easily explained by its popularity as a rental gun putting people off the platform.

I'll second the g36 (and its variations), it does have an awful lot to do with it being a popular rental. I keep looking for a decent g36k (ebb).

I would like to propose the Gsg G14. Firstly this is on my 'i want one' list, it has all the mod cons of burst, a decent etu, I think it has form and function. I have never seen one irl, not even in shops (I know a couple of Midlands shops do stock it but none near London). This comes back to the g36 in some ways as it is polymer externals. are the full metal possibilities of the Ar15 stylings putting people off real lightweight weapons?

SIG 55 series, multiple manufactures make them in varying price ranges, ambidextrous controls, good hop with good access.

very good shout that, i guess maybe proprietary magazines are putting people off? but then that doesn't stop the users of [anything that's not an m4 or ak] of this world.....

ASG Bren. Available a good while and have yet to see one at a site.

only person i know who fields one was the ex-tech at my local shop, i guess maybe folks just see it as a scar impersonator?

you see the whole "it's plastic so its shit" argument levied against guns like the f2000 too, i don't get it personally. don't get me wrong i love me a gun made of proper materials but if it's based on a gun that's mostly plastic then what's wrong with that?

even more ironic that the people complaining about it are probably still buy glocks......

3rd the g36, when I started playing 20 years ago the AR variants were generally creaky with wobbly foreends, a really poor depiction of their real steel counterparts, but the g36 was probably the most solid gun available, & let's be fair, it pretty much still is, the design has not changed one iota, & why should it, it's nigh on perfect, just not everyones cup of tea visually.

UZI.

I’ve never seen a TM one fielded and it’s such an iconic bad-guy piece (appreciates that it was an Isreali PDW before it was the quintessential action-movie-villain-gun)

The problem people have when it comes to plastic guns is they assume all plastic is that low quality crap you get on those 10 pound bb guns from the post office. Then they also assume all metal is created equal too. A good quality plastic gun feels way better than a pot metal chinese replica. G36 is a brilliant airsoft gun. The real rifle however might have issues with accuracy this is airsoft we talking about.

this is absolutely true, there's plastic and there's cheese same as there's aluminium and chinesium

plus afaik hasnt the whole g36 wandering zero thing been put down to "yeah but not really any worse than any other gun"?

I can agree with my ebb G36 which I’m selling, it has been the best gun I have owned but looking at focusing on my nerdy side so 😂

G&P have some of the best externals out there but apart from their LMGs they really don't get that much love. I also second the ASG CZ 805 Bren. It's got some of the best ootb performance at that price range. I think people get put off by the proprietary hop up and how much of a pig it is to get to the gearbox.

They went through a rough quality control issue a few years back other manufactures took over their position as quality guns and they were never really able to regain ground. they need a game changer as there are far too many high quality M4s now.

IIRC gun jesus did a video on Forgotten Weapons about the G36 being melty and inaccurate. The conclusion was its bollocks

Yes it seemed from his thoughts that the humble German Squaddie was perhaps not as good shot as they may have believed.

I haven't seen an AUG at a skirmish for at least 5 years, probably longer.

Not seen an ASG Bren other than in the Zero One Showroom. A bit heavy and chunky for what it is but looks nice.

The only G36's I see are generally rental guns, which is a shame. I think that they have a reputation as 'starter' guns, irrespective of manufacturer or internals.

I would like to see a proper Tavor X95. Not the crappy cheapo version that Umarex kicks out.

I always wonder why there aren't many UMPs around. Nice big mag if you like HI Caps, its HK, plenty of rail space.

Yes, it was a UMP9 that Bond used, but there has been a fair amount of movie and TV exposure.

i think the mp5 is the reason the ump isnt popular, i mean hk can't even convince people to buy the ump over the mp5.

What about MP5’s!!! Although popular here in the west they are not so in the land of the rising sun which is why we don’t see Marui making a recoil version of one. Although you never know what 2021 may bring.

that's a fair point, they do appear but tend to not be so common, despite being arguably as iconic and well recognised as the m4.

I was watching 6 days the other day on Netflix. It’s the story of the siege of the Iranian Embassy and of course the SAS storming it. It’s full of MP5 porn. That gun is just so iconic! I do miss the TW5. That Systema model was the dogs danglies.

There have been a few. JAC, Marushin and Tokyo Marui all made skirmishable Uzis, and Northeast are releasing a GBB one next year. I've imported a few nice TM uzis this year and have got another few imminently arriving so there are a few more around so maybe you'll see one.

I've only ever seen a Galil used once.

My regular site uses g36s as rentals so see them all the time.

Old spec ARs like m16a1s or XM177s, don't see those often at all.

How often do you see them used by non rentals? The g36, at many price points and by many brands, works inspite of the regular abuse renters give it. This I think was what @Adolf Hamster was aiming for, sure we see them but in the hands of skirmishers? For some reason I keep thinking of the k or e editions for a dmr build.

I run two G36's as lend to my mates rif's, dependable, easy to use, easy(ish) to fix, can take drum mags easily to field as a semi LMG

I run an ICS L85 and L86 as my mains (much easier to wield than my M4's). great feel, very accurate, piece of P## to service and tweak, and the easiest battery compartment out there. also have an Army L85 but its nowhere near as good as the ICS's

Sometimes carry an KWC mini Uzi as a back up for fun

Occasionally use my Umarex G3 GBB, but basically for our site with very intense short battles any GBB is a waste of time as you need around 500-2000 rounds a game
