Noobs and Milsims

For me the main attraction to milsim is real cap magazines and friend or foe identification by sight (without bright colours).

 

I just love reload drills.

 

Agreed on the bright colours... Hardly anyone bloody looks at them anyway!

Okto is somewhere in the middle of those extremes.

 

We do play by full milsim rules and there are no breaks or safe zone. Our games last eight hours and once you are in the battle area, you do everything there and carry everything with you into the game zone (no access to car boots allowed).

This gives players a flavour and they have to plan and think about kit. I think I once amused one of the Tier 1 guys by describing Okto as the nursery slopes for them.

 

I wish I could afford to spend two grand on NVG. Would be pretty pointless though as we dont do night games.

 

Milsim is a very broad term, you've got the sort of stuff that gunman and ambush adventures do where it's essentially a well organised skirmish with team kit colours all the way up to stirling and tier1 games where you start at midnight with a full brief followed by a dawn assault to take your team's 'FOB' (if you're on the good guy team that is) followed by 36-48 hours of game without programmed breaks and no safe zone.

The former I would say is eminently suitable as a starting point for any airsofter, the latter normally takes a bit of working up to as the kit requirement is normally a bit more substantial (Bashas, ground mats, cooking kit, a couple of working guns in case your main one breaks, night vision, etc).

That said, the only elitism I have EVER experienced in airsoft is reverse snobbery where guys have had a good old chuckle at the idiot who spent £2k on night vision to play soldiers. Each to their own I say!

There are a few good ones around and theres some dross around as well as sites try to capitalise on an increase in milsim interest.

My suggestion would be to study the fine detail of what they offer. Most organisers have their own little twists and additions to differentiate themselves.

 

 

Its a pity there is no directory or way of comparing the different games around.

 

We did make a matrix describing our games to make it easier for people and to avoid misunderstandings.

 

It would also be great if there was a milsim calendar where people wanting to participate could see what is on where. It was suggested on one of the general milsim groups on FB but never went anywhere.

I would love to see a milsim calendar. Getting the various companies together to produce it and start jointly advertising might help all parties increase the number of milsim players. Finding milsim games is mostly about knowing who puts them on and checking where and when they are. The events section of Airbana isn't really used today and its likely not the best place but right now the visibility of milsim games is really quite poor.

Another great thread, linking a few buddies to this one to build my case for booking us into an event.

 

One of the problems is everyone in the group rocking the same camo. There's about 10 or so of us and are all only just building our arsenal and kit up. Got to prioritise because you can't buy it all instantly!

MPF - Moldistan Peoples Front = Rebels loadout is:

 

Top or Bottom in DPM or Flecktarn; not both. If trousers are camo, top should be in solid colour such as solid green, tan /brown or black. If top is camo, trousers should be in solid colour such as solid green, tan/brown or black.
Top and Bottom in a solid colour such as solid green, tan or black also permissible.
Assault vests and chest rigs should be solid green, tan or black – preferably rigs rather than plate carriers – think guerilla.

 

Eastern Bloc weaponry such as AK47 and derivatives.
Headgear is optional and players should be either bareheaded or wear solid colour patrol caps, cold weather or woollen caps, berets, watch caps, balaclava, scarf/bandanna, Tam O’Shanters, Pakol’s, forage or peaked caps, etc.
No helmets, baseball hats or boonies.
Other dark camouflages might be accepted for the top or bottom camouflaged half, subject to prior agreement at time of booking, but definitely not A-TACS or ACU Digital, MTP or Multicam.

If I wore dpm trousers, a civilian top & green army coat (eastern block funny enough) & a wooly hat plus dpm soldier 95 chest rig

 

Is that acceptable

We normally fix the date within a fortnight of the end of the preceeding op and then booking starts about a fortnight after that.

The price for the 2015 games was/is £60 for the weekend with free camping.

The price for the 2016 games hasn't been fixed yet but if it goes up, it will only be an extra fiver.

 

Places are reserved by a £25 paypal deposit.

No the next op is 22/23rd August, so the January game will be posted up in the second or third week of September and booking for new players will open mid October.

The event goes up on the FB page, but if you're keen its probably worth joining our community group where all the guys hang out between games.The games are three times a year but the story goes on all year round.

I like the idea of having real cap, or at least more realistic magazine loads with limited bb carried forcing mag changes and reloading. Less spray and pray, and more ammo conservation. Would also allow a level the playing field for those with GBB guns.

Most milsims have this. Some of the Gunman ones allow hi-caps but Okto is mid or low cap only.

Many of our first timers are horrified at only being allowed to carry 600 rounds on them in mags, but once they play we find that many of them like it.

When sides are equipped equally ammo-wise, a lot of contacts end up being semi-auto or short bursts to conserve ammo and shots need to count.

We also use different regen rules which means players really dont want to get shot, so their behaviour is a bit closer to real life.

That's how I play, I use mid caps on semi only unless a non hit taker is being stubborn then it's a few short bursts & then gets reported to the marshalls

CIV-POP is a military term for civilian population and its often used in milsims to describe people playing civilians in the game.

 

These characters are normally actors who play the role of non-combatants in a game.

 

It can take many forms from Afghan pashtun villagers to VIPs to be protected.

 

For example, in the first Okto Eight game we had President Gretsky of Moldistan and his trusty bodyguard.

 

The rebels had to ambush his opening of the Titanium mine and attempt to assasinate him. They failed. The government forces did an excellent job of escorting him, despite an RPG attack which took out their vehicle.

 

Last game, we had a farmer on a tractor wearing an IED around his neck and begging the teams to help him.

 

Whatever the role, CIV-POP can really keep players on their toes.
