This was something I was contemplating myself earlier actually. For all intents and purposes they are the same width, with each "Compartment" being the same. But the SMG inserts being open at the bottom allow the smg mags to sit further down into the pouch. I've got two of the Pistol mag inserts and they're good - retention is tight on the mag without being annoying and you can sit the insert down into the pouch quite far so only the baseplate sits proud of the pouch itself. Wouldn't worry about them falling out.

The old thread is now fixed, so I've merged the temporary new thread with this one! As you were! I find it ok to be fair. The trick I found is to holster your pistol into the insert and then insert the VX Holster insert into your chest rig with the pistol in. The Utility rig will then form around the pistol, so it fits well while still allowing the pistol to have room. It's really really good. Especially considering how little they cost.. about £24 in some shops! It's especially convenient being able to have each one set up for a different play style too. Saves having to buy a new plate carrier and pouches for each eventuality. I've no complaints about the quality either, the stitching is nice and tidy and they feel very robust. Very much recommend the newer Viper gear (just maybe avoid the older stuff)

Might need a bit of gentle persuasion with a soft mallet and some swearing. Maybe some silicone oil around the outside of the bolt to grease the wheels as it were. Does the gun fire ok?

Not to mention the fucking awful paint job. That looks as though it has been "worn" by assaulting it with a wire brush ? And one photo! I take about 20 photos of cheap pistols when I sell it, nevermind when it comes to a gun that costs more than a used car! But it's ok - it's "Fully Tac".
