Can anyone recommend some decent component brands that don't cover everything in RGB lighting as soon as it pops up a level in performance? I'm looking at a new CPU/MoBo/RAM and everything is just covered in bloody lights!

Would recommend a far cheaper setup than that which Jedi has posted. You will never use most of the features of a board that costs more than 150 quid. Spending a lot of money on a good motherboard isn't really worth it unless you have some specific additional needs in mind for connectivity or running many expansion cards etc.

 

If you're using a single graphics card (which you really should be if you don't have more than a single 4K monitor) then almost any Z490 type motherboard is fine. MSI are my go-to pick but it won't really matter which you buy. Don't get a MicroATX as you will pay a slight premium for it being smaller and probably loose some connectivity too. Plain old ATX is the best value.

My recommendation would be the MSI MPG Z490 GAMING PLUS because it's from a reputable brand and is the cheapest. I am assuming that you don't need WiFi built in.

 

For RAM: All of these boards will support ridiculous RAM clock speeds. I'm just going to pick you something with a decent response time and from a good brand. Anything over 3000mHz is fine. Realistically you will never notice the latency or clock speed on RAM for general/gaming applications anyway. You don't need more than 32gb for general or gaming purposes. If you do a lot of design work maybe consider 64gb.

 

On the note of LEDs: Just completely ignore LEDs and order what has the best specs. LEDs or not. Better value usually means not having to deal with needless lights though, even from brands like MSI, Gigabyte, Asus etc. who will certainly offer RGB on their worse value boards and RAM. Also you can now buy a properly soundproofed case

Recently treated myself to a semi-new build as my current system was being bottlenecked by cheaping out on an i5 rather than i7. Except my current i5 was like 2 generations old now and I couldnt buy a i7 of the matching generation anywhere. So needed a new motherboard, decided to switch up my storage too as I was running a mish-mash of old hard drives and SSDs of varying sizes. Decided to go big or go home, not cheaping out on any components anymore so jumped straight up to the i9 rather than i7. Probably complete overkill but at least I wont have to upgrade again anytime soon.

 

However the absolute best thing I did was upgrade my monitor from a bog standard 1080p somethingorother, to a 1440p 144Hz G-sync monitor. Cost almost as much as the rest of my PC combined but my god do games look good now running at 140fps and I didnt realise how big a jump in quality it was from 1080p to 1440p.

 

Also replaced my ageing corsair H1500 headset with a new Steel Series Arctis 7 which are phenomenally good and comfy.

Funny you should say that, I bought a Gigabyte Z490 Gaming X in the end which has no RGB bullshit. Is nice and black (not that you can tell anyway seeing as it's in a non-windowed case).

I've not upgraded since 2016 I believe - I still run a pre-overclocked Gigabyte windforce 980Ti with an i7 6700k - 16gb of ddr4 and a Samsung nvme m.2.

 

While my current monitor is a 27" 144hz 1080p Iiyama; I would like to make a little return to gaming after around a years hiatus, maybe with a  1440p monitor and possibly one of these new 30 series RTX cards everyone is talking about - apparently the performance with the current Battlefield games at 1440p with the 3080 is pretty damn good.. even quite playable at 4k.

 

Because I skipped two core generations of GPUs (the 1080/ti and then the RTX 20 series), I imagine the jump in performance between the 980Ti and 3080 would be significant. Would love to go back and play BF4 at 1440p maxed out with a constant fps at a minimum of 144, tearing free - though maybe that's still wishful thinking?. Even so, with Gsync and Freesync I don't think the constant fps above the 144hz mark is actually necessary.

Funnily enough my brother is helping my 11 year old nephew build his first PC, I offered to donate some pieces I have lying around, in the form of my old GTX590 which was a beast of a card when it came out; it was 2 GPU chips on one card, effectively making it an onboard SLI solution for two GTX580s. But After doing a bit of research it turns out, this top of the line card which I bought for 6 or 7 hundred quid back in 2010/2011 wont be able to compete with a mid/bottom of the line 1660 contemporary card in the game 'fortnight' which is what he wants it for. Also, apparently SLI has gone the way of the dodo, so If you did want to run this card on a modern game, it would not be as a 590 but a single 580 GPU. To top it off, Nvidia  stopped supporting it in 2018 for driver updates so it may only be a matter of time until the card doesn't even switch on in a modern windows 10 machine - feels kinda sad really.

i hadnt gotten into airsoft when i built that that was a week later XD i managed to snag a 2070 super on day realease of the 3070 as they didnt have any instock wasnt leaving without a gpu at time llf

An absolutely amazing processor and incredible value for money. I was surprised to get almost 5Ghz when I overclocked it. Got very lucky on the silicon lottery.
