Hi, would anyone be able to say how much a 270fps pistol with hop up would hurt from a range of about 5-10m? Here is the pistol:https://bbguns4less.co.uk/products/double-eagle-m39g-pistol-bb-gun-with-red-dot-scope.html
Just because I'm trying to persuade my brother to get an air soft gun with me, but he's worried it will hurt.

I tried to upload this in red, but I couldn't find the option for it

The answer to how much it will hurt is: it all depends on where you are hit, how much adrenalin you have in your system, and how much of a wimp you are. If you get hit in the teeth at that range, even by a low power gun like 270 FPS, it could knock one out, which will probably hurt quite a lot, even if you are well excited and it doesn't hurt so much at the time... but then again, a hit to a T-shirt covered chest under the same circumstances may barely register in the heat of the moment. The thing is, airsoft is an adventure sport/hobby, and truthfully if your brother is concerned about getting hurt by something which hundreds of people take part in every weekend (hence cannot actually be particularly unsafe or you'd have seen headlines about it), he's probably too much of a wimp.

Then again, you may consider it a good-brotherly thing to do to expand his horizons...

Hi, thanks for the reply. I think my brother isn't just scared of getting injured, more of how much it will hurt when he gets shot. I've heard it's like a pinch, is that right? Does it hurt as much as paintball?

He says he's scared of guns, but he loves outdoor laser tag and nerf guns. I think if I can convince him that it's less painful than paintball he'll go along with it.
I just worked out how to get red font; I'm on an iPad so I had to go off the mobile version of this forum.

On average I'd say yeah, less than a paintball hit, but a pinch? Dunno - it depends how hard you pinch, or where on the body, assuming you mean grabbing a bit of skin between thumb and forefinger (rather than, say, getting a bit of your finger caught in a piece of machinery so it causes a blood blister)... but it's not really equivalent anyway, because I've only ever been pinched by surprise.

I mean, even while being tickled, so the physical contact isn't a surprise, the sudden change of tactics makes the pain unexpected and thus worse. When you're skirmishing your adrenalin is amped up, so even hits which break the skin don't bother you anywhere near as much as they would if, say, you sneaked into your brother's room and shot him in the bare arse after he'd just emerged from the shower, for instance (which action we, as a responsible forum, would never condone nor encourage since neither he, nor possibly you, would be likely to be wearing eye protection). However if you did and could somehow convince the hapless yoot to indeed wear eyepro into the shower, the warm, freshly scrubbed, buttock would very likely sting more from a 0.2g BB @270FPS from 5m than it would from an average non-bruising pinch. Even in the middle of a skirmish, a similar hit to ungloved fingers would sting enough to make most people yelp and/or swear, but onto a sleeved arm, you'd be far more bothered by the in-game consequences of being hit (the walk of shame or yelling for a medic) than the momentary pain.

my_bleeding_face_hit.jpg

...this hit was from a 0.2g BB @365-70FPS from 6-7m

It resulted from a BB getting between a loose lower face mask bouncing away from my goggles opening and closing a gap as I ran. It did sting, but not much - less than a pinch, but it didn't half shit me up because it was so close to my eye and I could feel the wet blood running down my face.

The pic was taken in the safe zone around 15mins later, after i had wiped my face with tissues and water in the field, so it doesn't really demonstrate how much it bled. I mean at worst there were multiple points where it was dripping from my beard. After the initial WTF moment had passed however, the blood itself was the only issue preventing me from just regen-ing (a marshal didn't want me carrying on until the bleeding was under control) and getting straight back into the assault on the fort, which had been stalling a bit until a handful of us went in on a banzai mission which proved enough to turn the tide, so my team were then hitting the enemy so fast that it sounded like the only thing slowing them was having to wait for dead-men-walking to get down the 2 single file staircases to the upper level, so the last few die-hards could be rooted out... all of which i mention for context, ie my adrenalin was pumping good stylee! I literally barely felt any pain even though the hit pretty much destroyed the dermis layer so I have a permanent BB sized crater scar...

BTW, this is not me giving it the Billy Big Bollox - anyone who'se been into airsoft for a while will tell you the same: we've all got our tales of the real zingers that either left permanent scars but didn't hurt, or contrarily left no glory but nigh on crippled us at the time :D

Yeah, I got a Desert Eagle shot into my left thumb joint from about 1m - my thumb was pretty much paralysed by pain for several days... and that hit was through gloves made from Pyrohide and Kevlar ffs! Later in the day someone got ripped up by hits which some people found suspiciously excessive so all guns were re-chronoed immediately - the culprit was found: I forget the exact deets but it was over 400FPS on full-auto (the lad was a noob borrowing a mate's gun for a change after lunch / genuine mistake / no malice aforethought / no ban), but this proved that the Deagle was site legal, so for that place 350FPS or below with 0.2's...

Ok, I've found a few more guns around 180fps, one of which claims a 40m range. My brother seems happier about getting a lower powered gun like these. How much would something like this hurt from about 10-15m, and is the 40m range realistic? Here is that gun: https://bbguns4less.co.uk/products/galaxy-g3a-full-metal-pistol-with-silencer-in-blue.html

And if your interested here are the other guns I'm thinking about:https://bbguns4less.co.uk/products/galaxy-g3-ppk-replica-full-metal-pistol-bb-gun-in-orange.html

270fps is probably with lighter 0.12's

a bit mickey mouse but for safety reasons you should be 18

AND ALWAYS WEAR DECENT EYE PROTECTION !!!!

I mean it - don't take chances even messing about back garden plinking !!!

seriously - you can still lose a f*cking eye even messing about - a lot more dangerous than messing with Nerf stuff

the weight or mass of the bb 0.12 0.20 0.25 etc... determines the "ouch" factor at xxx fps

0.12's @270fps is less ouch than a .25@270fps

But honestly - ensure that a 18+ purchases it and above all else don't be a dick with it

don't take chances good eyepro is a must !!!!! - even if you skirmish in the buff -wear eyepro

(even with less powerful air guns/toys)

play safe - please

ouch factor - depends where you get shot - getting shot in the back with little meat/fat stings more than in the chest/ar$e

close up hurts more than a distance coz bb loses energy/speed/fps blah blah blah

get a full face mask - saves eye and teeth/good looks (too late for ugly me)

baggy clothes help absorb the ouch/sting - just play safe on ya eyes/face

PS - liked Ian's pic not coz I'm a sicko but a very vivid reminder for us all to take safety seriously

(yeah I have a weird sense of humour but holy f*ck/ouch)

Yeah I would definitely wear full face mask.

So is the pain caused down to the size of the BB rather than the fps? If so, how much would it hurt to use .12 bbs with the 270fps pistol wearing baggy clothes, face mask and from about 10-15m range?

The pain is more down to the Joule (energy) which is travelling behind the BB and where you get hit. The heavier the BB is and the higher it's FPS. The more kinetic energy it will have. Also, getting shot somewhere sensitive like fingers or your gonads will hurt a lot more than getting shot in the chest.

it is the weight or mass of the bb/projectile

normally min 0.20's are used - often 0.25's or heavier maybe by some

the lighter 0.12's don't always get felt under layers of protection/clothes very easily

also lighter bb's tend to be fly off course over distance

so for wimpy players playing close up 0.12's are ok

this where the " BB " sites specialise in crappy lower quality/price plinkers which is fine for that

Problem is that they tend to make the younger or newcomer believe these plinkers will be ok out on a skirmish site

They won't - 99% of them will put you at a disadvantage, some more than others

your £10 pistol has to be cocked everytime to fire, might only shoot say 240fps on 0.2's - maybe less coz often figures are max fps quoted

even on cqb sites that might be single shot at close range guns can still shoot say 7+ shots per second on semi with a decent trigger finger/gun

so you may scape 2 shots per second if lucky in a fire fight

but people do have a go especially if they like a challenge or wish to humiliate them using a crappy jbbg

just don't go nutz or get too stressed if ya get owned by a more proper gun/toy gun

This is supposed to be short thread so I'll just say 0.12's hurt the least

if that stings too much - then best wait a few years or man up a bit

Ok I'll get the 270fps gun and use .12 BBs. I'm not planning on using it for skirmishes or anything serious, just for garden shootouts with my brother. If we really like it, we'll start saving up for more serious guns. I'm hoping he'll get over his fear of pain soon lol.

Even if he won't get a gun, that's fine by me - he just won't have anything to get me back with when I shoot him.

Just bear in mind that sites like justbbguns and bbguns4less, particularly jbbg, have a very poor reputation for customer service and also for making outrageous claims/printing outright lies about products they are selling. Those low power pistols are very poor quality - you will be lucky if they last for more than a few uses.

just to add....i wasn't to worried about the hit factor at my first game but it crossed my mind when you look on youtube etc, i wouldt worry about it, and i got hit several times form various distances, only had a bruise on my fat side for a few days, prob from around 25m or so and a mark on my hand from about 5m, just for a split second but it goes and you carry on....

got hit on sat after putting my hand up and saying hit....some one shot my palm from a few meters, swore as you do it hurt for a minute but red mark had gone sunday afternoon.....so dont stress!

just do as they say and wear the recommended eyepro/facepro so you dont lose a tooth or your sight!

If it was up to me I would get the 270fps with .12 or .20 BBs but my brother's a bit wary of how much it will hurt. Hopefully he'll decide he likes it and it doesn't hurt as much as he thought and we'll get better guns.

Also, does anyone of any more trustworthy websites they would recommend instead of justbbguns and bbguns4less where I could get a decent cheap entry level pistol. (Preferably a springer for extra cheapness). It's just for garden battles with my brother at the moment, not for skirmishing or anything serious.

Most reviews for the guns I've been looking at say that after 10-15 metres, the hop up makes the bb fly upwards massively, so accuracy is awful at anything over that range. Does hop up make that much of a difference to the range, and would I get further accurate range with a gun that doesn't have hop up?

That can depend on whether it's an adjustable or fixed hop up - it's probably fixed, and if that's the case it's probably made for 0.20g BBs, not 0.12g. It's also possible that a poor design means it's simply overhopping and curving upwards into the sky like people say, or they're also using lighter 0.12g BBs that it's not designed for.

This is not a problem you can really get around without switching the weight of the BB or adjusting the hop to a lower setting (which I doubt is possible on such a budget as they tend to be fixed). Hop helps massively with any airsoft gun to keep a flatter trajectory over long distances. If you're only shooting between 10-15m you won't notice it, but at about 20m it becomes very obvious as your BB either flies upwards (too much hop) or just drops to the ground (too little hop). A heavier BB will want to drop quicker, but with a good hop will actually go a lot further than a lighter BB and that's why most airsoft guns are designed for using 0.20g or over - even the very cheap ones.

Action Hobbies do a couple of springer pistols - they are pretty reputable: I've bought from them several times with no issues, however some people have reported bad experiences. That said, they are one of the larger retailers so you'd expect that out of the thousands of sales they make, some will always cock up and people do tend to shout louder about their shitty experiences than they do about the good ones.

The thing to bear in mind is that a cheap springer is a very poor introduction to how much fun you can have with an actual airsoft gun, because no matter what ammo you choose, the range is going to be poor and the accuracy is likely to also be less than ideal. They are the kind of thing you give to 9 year olds to mess about with, because even if they don't listen and do something unsafe, like not wearing eyepro/shooting at someone who isn't/shooting in a direction whereby misses end up in the neighbours' garden/etc, the chances of blindness being the end result are much much less.

For a cheap springer, I would recommend an imitation shotgun: something like this if you're skint/young - ignore the mini-paintballs, because they have a poor rep for splitting inside the gun, and get a pot of 5000 .12's and you'll be just about able to hit a man sized target @40m / @20m in still air you could have A4 sized target shooting competitions, but i'm pretty sure that you can get two tone Franchi SAS shotguns without paying patrolbase.co.uk to actually paint the two tone on and they are good enough to skirmish with. Another good make which is cheap is the Double Eagle M56 range (everything else DE make is shit, but their shotties are OK) but i'm pretty sure you'd have to get them from bbguns4less for two tone (they are not as bad as justbbguns whom you just cannot defame enough to actually be slandering/libelling them).

BTW, how old are you?

I'm 14, 15 in November. My brothers my twin brother

Well, as you probably know, you'll have to get an 18+ to buy any BB gun for you, but with your parent/s' permission you could try airsoft at many sites: 14+ is the usual cut-off age for UKARA registered sites' insurance. So you could rent a decent-ish gun and face mask plus, at some sites, some form of camo gear, and get stuck in to way more fun than you can have with an underpowered plinker in your backgaredn...

Of course some people feel the need to serve a couple of tours in the Back Garedn for the props... war is hell, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
