I think the only thing that really affects performance when it comes to barrels is correctly voluming your build with the BBs you plan on using, and in terms of gas guns making sure you have the correct barrel length to joule creep to the power you want. Too much air volume leads to inconsistencies in shots, as the excess air can push the BB off-centre when it leaves the barrel, but too little volume leads to lower power and the BB decelerating while it is still in the barrel. Also, apparently barrel bore influences accuracy and power, with wider tending towards more accuracy and tighter tending towards more power, but I think the difference in accuracy between barrel bores is minimal. I've had very accurate builds with 6.02 and 6.03 barrels, and poor performance with 6.23 widebores, so I think the barrel bore for stability isn't a huge deal.

I love gas bolt action rifles and own 4 gas bolt action rifles myself (KJW m700, KJW m700 in an m40 kit, Tanaka m700 and PPS Kar98k)... and I wouldn't touch this with a 10ft stick. Ares guns tend to look really nice, but perform like utter crap and with this platform I have no idea what upgrade parts are available as I suspect a lot of it is proprietary, as well as magazine availability and how good they are as good quality magazines are very important for gas bolt actions. In short, I'd avoid it.

I have had the same consistency on my VSR, as that is a Wolverine Bolt with the co2 adapter inside the stock because I'm the same as you; I can't stand lines and external tanks, especially since I tend to play the sneaky sniper role and crawl under bushes and move through dense foliage and a line gets caught on absolutely everything. The reason why it's a lot more consistent than something like the GHK on co2 is that at the end of the day it's still an HPA setup with a regulator. You do still get a few spicy shots at the start of the bulb and a few very limp shots as you get to the end of the bulb, but for the majority of shots I have found (at least with my VSR on co2) that it's pretty damn consistent because of that regulator. I won't pretend to understand the science of it, but I think it's because it basically gets the liquid propellant out of the bulb, converts it to a gas in the regulator up to a certain pressure that you set on the regulator, then uses that just like it would a regular air tank to push the BB when you pull the trigger. I could also be entirely wrong on that, but it would explain why it's more consistent on the VSR, which is a bolt action, but could be inconsistent if I were to spam the trigger on the MTW; I might test that theory on Sunday, but honestly it's not a big concern of mine since I plan on using it as a DMR anyway (Worthing Airsoft and Driver Wood are both 1.88J for DMRs which is a lot nicer) and spamming triggers with a DMR is a no-no, and people who do it are making the rest of us look bad! And for AI500, yeah it's a real shame the limit is so low; I would've liked 1.88J, but even 1.64J would've been "okay". I'll see about it, but I might still go with 1.48J if only so that the shots have a bit more force for those 50-60m shots that I could hit at 1.1J anyway. My experience with 1.1J builds is that you need a couple of BBs for people to feel it at those longer ranges, as when I used my Kar98k at that range on .32s, people weren't feeling them unless they were completely still. Hopefully I won't even have to use it though, as I'd be rather upset if the SRS went down on the first game day I'll be using it, and 2.32J of bolt action is waaaaaaay more useful than 1.48J of DMR.

Yeahhhhhhhhh, the statement I made about not owning an MTW is no longer true as I have now received my MTW 308 Unleashed and it is really nice. Came with a curved trigger instead of that icky straight trigger too, so saved some extra money there too as I would've replaced the straight trigger if I did my build on the regular version. It's A&K SR-25 compatible with the mags, except not quite as my Cyma SR-25 magazines did not fit. Fortunately I picked up some Battleaxe SR-25 mags from someone here a few months ago that didn't quite fit properly in my Cyma SR-25 and they fit (very snug) into this, so I do have mags to use! Taking it to my local site this weekend and obsessively setting it up for 1.88J on .43s as I plan on using it as a DMR, then testing how many shots a single co2 bulb will give me. I love that it only comes with a two position fire selector, so it's very much locked to semi auto. I still need to buy a bunch of external parts from Brownells for it, but that'll be a next month purchase as I really can't justify spending even more than I already have this month. Taking both of them to AI500 next month, so will need to turn the psi down on the regulator as their DMR rules are turbo-crap at 1.48J, so I might just tune it down to 1.14J on a .32 for it but we'll see. Planning on using the SRS anyway, with the MTW as a backup for if the SRS dies, purely because of their bad DMR rules and I have to take it easy since I'll still be on blood thinners, so I'll be hanging back a lot. Also the suppressors arrived, both for the MTW and the SRS I bought recently too. Makes the SRS a lot quieter and I'm very happy with that and hoping it's good on the MTW as well, because I bought the same suppressor (the DTSS .308 one), but 14mm threads instead of the 24mm one on the SRS. Will be pumping up the tank for the MTW today and slapping some cr123s in the grip, so I'll find out later I suppose!

That's quite the shrink down! I've been tempted to shrink my collection, but every time I try I get disheartened by what people offer. Had someone offer me £400 for a £1200+ build, for example, and that just put me off it since I don't need the money.

I have the AKM, which is basically the same platform and it's a fantastic piece of kit. Never had any reliability issues, though my friend had his nozzle break after a over two years of fairly heavy use; he used it for a lot of game days and the nozzle eventually gave up. Mine has been just fine, but I don't use it as much because I'm more into the MWS. For upgrades, all I'd do is swap the hop rubber for a Flamingo rubber and swap out the hop arm for Jaeger Precision's hop arm as it's amazing: https://jaegerprecision.co.uk/shop/p/ne7ayhxn2g8eyi4mpl7ulzbzkvl234-a8gw4 For maintenance, just treat it like a real rifle and clean and relube it after each game day. It's fine to use in the rain and I tend to use GBBRs when it's heavily raining because there are no complex electronics that can get wet and ruined, just make sure afterwards you take it out of the rifle bag and let it dry out. I usually field strip my GBBRs if it's been really wet and just leave the parts out on my desk for a day or two to let them dry before I clean and relube it. Don't put it in an airing cupboard though as that can dry out the hop rubber; just keeping it out and letting it air dry in a regular room is enough.

So uhhhh... I don't even have an MTW... ... yet. Had stock notifications for a bunch of these parts and I think Empire Airsoft must've had a restock come in because I managed to get everything I wanted apart from the extended blue nub. This, combined with the fact that Wolverine now offer an MTW 308 Unleashed that comes with the Wraith X pre-installed as well as the battery grip for a lower price than the sum of their parts, means that the MTW 308 has shot up the list to the point where I'll probably pick it up end of the month. The real-steel externals can wait until next month, but with all the internal parts I wanted to experiment around with now acquired, I want to build this thing. (Stalker nubs are for the SRS as that was having issues hopping heavy ammo last Sunday, so more nubs to experiment with, as well as more rubbers that I have dug out of my parts box)

Essentially no, it comes down to the hop up. If you have a GBBR and an AEG, both capable of hopping .48s and both shooting at 1.1J, they will perform about the same. However, there's usually issues when it comes to voluming for AEGs which I'll go into in more detail. If you're interested in me absolutely nerding out over tiny details, continue reading. If not, you have been warned! I think it's probably because gas when it comes to propelling the BB works differently and most AEGs have voluming issues for heavy weight BBs. I've recently been properly delving into cylinder to barrel ratio stuff for my SRS, so I actually have a good understanding of it now. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me, but this is my understanding from my work on my own guns though my knowledge on AEGs is all theoretical because I just can't work on gearboxes; I've tried and failed way too many times, but I'm well-practiced on gas guns, from gas bolt actions, to GBBRs and GBBPs (and mk23s...) I'll start by citing my sources (ooooh, look at me being all professional and stuff) because we stand on the shoulders of giants http://airsofttech.dk/Guides.cshtml?Page=CylBarVolRatio_Page1 https://www.airsoftsniperforum.com/threads/cylinder-barrel-ratios-explained.14303/ Basically, a heavy BB requires more pressure to push through a barrel and takes longer to get from the start point to leaving the barrel. A .2g BB accelerates incredibly quickly through the barrel and leaves a lot quicker than a .48, assuming the same power level, so your cylinder to barrel ratio for heavy BBs tends to be higher to make sure you're pushing the BB appropriately through the barrel; you want a lot more air in the cylinder to push the BB through the barrel and also around the BB as it travels, creating a sort of air cushion around it. As an example (it's not an AEG, I'm sorry, but the mechanics are the same) I've got my SRS at about a 3.36:1 cylinder to barrel ratio for chucking .48s, so my cylinder volume is 3.36x the volume of my barrel and that seems to be about right for it (though not 100% accurate without me getting a barrel and testing it and cutting it down 10mm every time to see where it's the best. Most AEGs really struggle to volume properly which causes inconsistencies. Funnily enough, the best guns AEGs for chucking heavy BBs are things like mp5s or short m4s with shorter inner barrels. If there is too much volume it can push your shots off course after it leaves the barrel, causing inaccuracy. If there is not enough volume (a lot of AEGs using heavy BBs) it starts decelerating inside the barrel, which causes inconsistencies. With GBBs, the gas constantly expands as it pushes the BB through the barrel, so you have constant acceleration much like a real firearm; a 10.5" AR-15 firing the same 5.56 ammo as an 18" AR-15 will struggle to hit ranges that the long barreled one will hit with ease because the long barrel is giving the bullet more time to accelerate through the barrel. GBBs work in a similar way in that when the hammer strikes the magazine and releases the gas, it's constantly expanding and accelerating the BB through the barrel, so there's no issues with voluming in the same way AEGs have issues, and it compounds with heavy ammo as heavy ammo spends longer in the barrel, so it has more time to accelerate. This is why you get so much joule creep in long barreled gas guns. One of my gas m700s has a 640mm inner barrel and I find it tough getting it shooting the correct power on .48s and 144a during the summer; fortunately it's the one I don't use and is more of a collectors item However, let's assume that we have an AEG correctly volumed for heavy BBs for the sake of argument. In this instance, no, there is no inherent advantage that a GBBR will have for hopping heavy ammo. And I just saw this so you may disregard everything I typed (but I'm not deleting it because it took me time to write and I like nerding out!). I think GBB hop rubbers tend to be a bit better than AEG rubbers for hopping heavy ammo. Longer hop patches thanks to unbridged barrels certainly help getting a more even and consistent spin on heavy ammo. I put Flamingo buckings in my GBB hop rubber stuff and the patch is noticeably longer than the patch in the Maple Leaf MR rubbers I put in all my AEG rubber stuff

They're rated for up to 160psi and I don't think I've ever run anything higher than that (and I only run bolt actions and DMRs as HPA, so I tend to crank up the psi a bunch) And I'd advise getting a tool to adjust it. Under pressure I believe it'll be a lot harder to adjust, but I can't confirm at the moment because both my HPA tanks are empty as I am using co2 for the VSR and just plainly not using the m21 because I can't stand an external line, and one is past its hydro date so I'm definitely not filling it. Only thing I'd say is you need to confirm whether your stuff has US fittings or EU fittings. I think most stuff tends to have US fittings, but you never know...

Haha, I probably won't be bringing the cape and boonie setup that I usually run because I don't have a way to run both earpro and comms with my ghillie boonie (I can do one or the other, but not both ), so I'll probably just bring a cobra hood and a cap to AI500, but that's part of the reason I'm sniping; I'll be taking it pretty easy, just taking up overwatch positions either in buildings or covering buildings and leaving the CQB to my team mates. I'm good to start exercising again from Monday, so I'll be fine for AI500; I'll just still be on blood thinners until then and my local site is covered in brambles that just love to slice me to pieces so I'm not playing until I'm off the blood thinners next month, but I'm back to swimming from Monday so I'll be more than able to play at AI500 from a fitness perspective. Original plan was to do the MWS + SRS + pistol setup for AI500, but as it's going to be my first game back, I'm going lightweight so I'm just bringing two bolt actions and two pistols (one to use, one as a backup) and playing passive. I think it's the more sensible approach

Later down the line when I'm properly back into playing, I'm going to try using it slung on my back when I'm running around with my short MWS. Use the MWS as I'm moving about, pull out the SRS once I get into a good position. Weight isn't so much of a factor for me (it's definitely heavier than my VSR), what I really wanted was something short that isn't going to smack into trees and stuff, so hopefully this'll fit the bill for what I want to use it for. If not, it'll be a good bolt action for winter because my green gas m700s are a bit crap when it gets really cold.

A shoulder piece or cape is all you need and I think the all-over suits that most people wear are a waste of time and just get snagged on everything. I'm pretty much a full-time bush and I never use ghillie trousers or an all over leaf suit top; as long as you keep still and don't silhouette, you'll be surprised just how much you can get away with. I'd have a look around Aliexpress, honestly. I just typed "ghillie" into the search bar and it came up with a bunch of stuff that I'd try if I didn't already have stuff (and if I wasn't a tall and large gentleman; Aliexpress stuff can be a bit small for me). I'm sure it doesn't need to be said, but avoid those swamp monster suits.

If I want to use my MWSs, AKM or multitude of .308 guns, all I need to do is swap out that front panel for one of the other two. My SMG kit is a heavy setup because I'm an immersion nerd so my plate carrier has weighted training plates in it to mimic the weight of real plates, and if I'm using an SMG I would probably want a plate carrier as an SMG is far more at home in a direct action style kit; my chest rigs or solo battle belt kits tend to be for more recce or scout sniper style loadouts with a DMR or bolt action rifle, which in fairness is what I tend towards more anyway as I prefer it. So for my SMGs, I use my Warrior Assault Systems plate carrier that has a bunch of different front panels that I change out depending on which gun I'm using. One of these front panels has 2x Viper triple SMG mag pouches, and I tend to remove one of the m4 mag pouches on the side for an extra double 8fields SMG mag pouch for 8 spare magazines in total, plus one in the gun for my mp9. The mp9 is a GBBR, so combined with the weighted training plates it's incredibly heavy, but it feels so right. It's also a great workout

This is good to see. I love running DMRs, but a lot of sites have pretty wank DMR rules (Gunman has 1.48J with a 30m MED for example) because of people like that who take the piss, so I'm always happy to see it when these people get pulled on their asshole behaviour.

I'd try and change your mind if I didn't completely agree. I've been ghillie sniping since about 2008ish (I still use webtex concealment vests as my ghillie base because they're great!) and general airsoft sniping since about 2005ish, eagerly navigating the field with my unupgraded Warrior L96 flinging "heavyweight" .25s; the kind of airsofter that I see so many people turning their noses up at nowadays. I definitely have similar memories to you, where you could really feel the difference in range between bolt action sniper rifles and regular AEGs and the community in general was better. I never remember there being any drama outside of when a bunch of kids in the year below me and my friends at school came around and refused to take their hits, but outside of that there were no dramas. Not even when I moved to Spain and we played with no marshalls, no chrono and not on any official sites because none existed; we were just a bunch of people who played BB wars in abandoned urbanisations. Again, no issues whatsoever. I remember I played alongside a pair of Germans who both had upgraded KJW m700s and their rifles outranged everything by a country mile. Nowadays when it comes to bolt action sniper rifles, you get maybe 15 - 20m over a well-tuned AEG. Typically, I zero my 1.14J rifle builds at 60m and an accurate 50 - 60m is the performance I chase, while my 2.32J bolt action rifles I typically zero for an accurate 75m, but with the ability to fairly easily hit the 85m target as well with a tiny bit of elevation. DMRs (my local limits are 1.88J) I typically zero to 70m with a 75m slight elevation target, so you can see the distance in ranges is minimal between the 1.14J rifle, the 1.88J DMR and the 2.32J bolt action. You can't even use the "a bolt action's strength is how quiet it is" any more, because HPA setups are quieter than most spring bolt actions. Combine that with saddling yourself with a 30m radius of "not allowed to shoot" and I can see why it's just... not great. Plus, it's very easy to angle an AEG and just spray full auto and you'll reach out to the same distance the sniper is trying to shoot. I have a friend who plays LMG who says "yeah, but I'll just angle my gun and I can hit out to 70m too" and he's not wrong. While you can angle your sniper rifle to get more range as well, it's a lot harder with a single shot and a bolt pull than simply squeezing the trigger and spraying full auto like a mortar strike So why do I keep playing bolt action and DMR? Personally, I really enjoy the long range stuff where it basically becomes archery and don't really care too much about body count. If I get a single shot at 85 or 90m, or a single shot that I post through some small gap in my first attempt, that's more enjoyable for me than going on some crazy 10 player killstreak. As one of the German guys I played with all those years ago said: "it's not how many you hit, but how you hit them". Also, excuses to use my pistol more are always welcome as I love pistols too, and a 30m MED forces me to use my pistol a lot, especially during summer where most of my local site is so overgrown it's unplayable with a 30m MED I also agree on there being way too many ghillies nowadays. I like using a ghillie with DMRs as well, because I tend to use my DMRs more like semi-auto sniper rifles and still play the same role as with a bolt action, but I hate seeing so many ghillie + HPA m4 combos, I do think most people who use DMRs spam the trigger way too much and I think there tends to be way too many bolt actions on the field sometimes. I blame social media for it, as people see the videos on youtube and think "wow, he got all those kills? I want to do that!". A lot of them aren't great, because they rely too much on their over-engineered suits, but it's still no fun to leave spawn and get laced up by a bush wielding a 25rps HPA m4.

Yep. Standard nub that came with it and a 50 degree flamingo with a 131mm 6.04 crazy jet barrel. I only have the hop up wheel at about 1.5 for a lovely trajectory on .32s and it goes up to 9, so I reckon I could hop .48s with it if I needed to (I don't need to...). Effective range is still around the 45 - 50m mark with the .32s, especially when shooting with a well-zeroed red dot, but if I see someone at 60m I'm confident I could empty a magazine and one would probably hit them Personally, I'd keep the standard nub unless I was doing some sort of carbine DMR build with it and wanted to put .48s through it. As I said, I'm at 1.5 on the hop wheel (it goes 0 - 9) for .32s, so using the standard nub gives me a bit of wiggle room if I go to a CQB site where they limit BB weight. With a harder nub, it may even over-hop .32s unless I put maybe a 60 degree Flamingo rubber in it.

Haha, that's my problem; I tend to use gas bolt actions. I can't remember the last time I used a spring one, but I think I'll use a thin layer of spray inside and then the grease on the outside. Because I use gas bolt actions I'm very used to the bolt generating that crunchy grit and having to regularly clean and re-lube, because gas bolt actions do the same. Main reason I asked was because I remembered the Edgi SAP piston specifically couldn't have silicone lubricant used on it or the cup swelled, but looking around on Facebook it seems that the WASP has no such limitation, so that's fine. Now I just need to play the waiting game for customs to stop being their usual slow selves and let Longbow's Silverback shipment in so they can send me my SRS. Got all the other internal parts just sitting on my desk!
