  1. The magazine on my SMLE for example is a massive piece of metal with a large surface area. It will therefore regain any heat fast after losing it when you shoot. By definition sniper rifles shoot slowly. Yes FPS will drop off on a gas gun if you go full auto, but we're talking sniper rifles. Only the last few shots will vary in pressure. As long as there is more gas in the magazine than can maintain a gaseous state at the temperature the gun is running at, it will maintain a given pressure by converting between gas and liquid, unless you shoot faster than it takes to regain equilibrium (again this should not apply to a sniper). Also having studied the gas release valve in quite some detail since it blew up; the higher the pressure in the magazine, the harder it is to depress the release valve. This will help maintain a more constant fps over a range of gas pressure. I would guess that a gas rifle will be capable of close to the performance of a spring rifle that has had a reasonable amount spent upgrading. I doubt that a gas rifle will outperform the best specced spring rifles.
  2. One option no-one ever discusses is the gas powered sniper. They are more expensive but perform better out of the box. One write up on the subject reckoned that a gas gun out of the box will shoot as well as a spring gun after modification and cost approximately the same. The downside is that if something goes wrong it is harder to fix on a gas gun. Also temperature will affect your fps.
  3. Most sites have no DMR limit set. If you want to perform the designated marksman role, you need to shoot accurately and get a rifle that is accurate a very good range at 350fps. Then if you are at a site where they have separate DMR limits, change out the spring or whatever if you feel it would be advantageous. Alternatively, get a bolt action rifle and use the sniper limits without all that sneaky business.
  4. But it still means it comes from Begadi. Buying from other sources means you miss out on the packet of Gummi Bears!
  5. Sometimes it takes a second for your brain to register the hit. I know it has happened to me, where I hear someone shoot, turn and return fire and then realise, 'oh wait a minute, I got hit'. If someone is doing it all the time then it's probably intentional but quite often it can just be their brain playing tricks where the information about being hit gets delayed slightly due to all the other things going on.
  6. Just noticed we have a member called wheeled wonder, who has a guy in a wheelchair with a gun as his avatar. Mabe there are more airsofters in wheelchairs than we all realised?
  7. Aussie Tropical uniform. £70 delivered from the whatpriceglory.com
  8. This is why I suggested trying different guns before buying. Guns come in different shapes and iron sights vary. If the OP hasn't bough a gun yet then now is the time to find out what sort of ironsights work for him.
  9. The law says that you need to be reasonably sure that the gun will be used for airsofting/re-enactment etc. A UKARA number covers you, but then I suppose selling to a long term forum member who you can tell is an airsofter from posts might be enough to cover you.
  10. Worth considering that you have a disadvantage in terms of mobility, so why not use the advantages you do have and take a bloody big heavy gun that would be a pain for the rest of us to carry all day. Lets face it, in a wheelchair you are unable to be stealthy enough to be a sniper and an assault rifle gives you no advantages over able bodies players. If you can bring ridiculous firepower to the game, your team has an incentive to protect your flank as you won't be able to turn quickly. You just need a way to make your chair take the weight. Incidentally, do you have a pic of the chair? It may help us to come up with more silly ideas
  11. Generally Milsims will require different coloured gear for each team, this is because red and blue bands aren't very realistic. All this means is that you may need a set of DDPM for one side or DPM for the other. You also will need midcap or lowcap mags. It's the same as WW2 airsoft, the gear requirements are there mainly to make it easy to see which side someone is on and then the level of detail you put into it is up to you. Although I would guess that like WW2 airsoft, most milsimers will spend a fortune looking as perfect for the scenario as possible.
  12. You tried a reflex sight and didn't like it, do you mean iron sights? Red dot sights all work the same way and just have different looks. Which looks best will depend what gun you put it on and personal choice. Iron sights are generally better for accuracy and red dot sights are better for fast targeting. Different guns will have different iron sights, maybe have a look at a few different guns. If you want a red dot sight, just look on amazon or ebay for red dot sights and find a cheap one you like the look of. It's worth checking which batteries they take as although they don't use batteries up very fast, some batteries are easier to pick up from a petrol station on the way to a game than others.
  13. Got matilda to shoot (yay) but the valve still leaks and fps with 144a gas is 472fps! Oh and I can only get 3 shots out of a mag full of gas. Still it's a sign of improvement :D

      Could be a re-enactment place too :D

      It would be great though!

OMG, I think I got Matilda working. Very underpowered but that may be because my gas is running low.

  14. I finish work at 1am, I have to fix my rifle (O rings not arrived yet so went to halfords and bought some). Then I have to get all my gear together, get beer and food and catch a train at 2pm to my next WW2 game.

In re-enactments, do you use airsoft stuff?

You mean when I went to Lacock at war? I used my Lee Enfield, yes but no gas or ammo. The WW2 airsoft games obviously you use airsoft stuff :)

How'd it go? Hope it went well!

  15. The Sten is an amazing gun, it's cheap and outshoots just about everything on the field. So yes, it is my answer to just about everything. In this case it fits the 5 criteria listed better than any gun I know. 1) High rate of fire 2) Mid range 3) Upgradable internals 4) SMG 5) Sturdy and robust or reliability. Fortunately people never listen, so I shall continue having a massive advantage over everyone when I skirmish with my Sten.
  16. AGM/ASG Sten mk2. Very good range and accuracy. Made of steel making it just about bomb proof and the rate of fire is excellent. Downsides are that it cannot be upgraded externally and it is full auto only.

Black ops have a form you will need to get stamped each time you go to either cribbs causeway or Portishead. Once you have 3 stamps and it is 2 months after your 1st one, they will help you sort out UKARA. Spartan will do something similar.

Black ops cribbs and Portishead will work as they're run by the same people.
  19. Generally what constitutes a good sniper rifle is based not upon how good the rifle is out of the box, but whether it is possible to upgrade them. The Well rifles have lots of after market parts available.
  20. I discovered a small model shop 5 mins away from me I now have some trees, 2 shades of flocking and some paints. I bought a picture frame to use as a base for a diorama and some air setting modelling clay to build the ground. I have started building a scene with a small river through the middle and a muddy track fording the river. I shall try doing the river with Yacht varnish.
  21. It may be worth asking local sites whether they can make provisions for wheelchair users. It might be tough for some sites to make things accessible due to the terrain but some of the more urban sites may be able to build some games around having someone in a fixed sniping/machinegun position. I did see one video ages ago where a wheelchair had been converted into a mini tank for a milsim game.
  22. I'm afraid the RFD is wrong. I wouldn't worry about it as you haven't broken the law, he has.
  23. Depending how you play, you might be better off with a very accurate AEG. A good M14 will be cheaper than a fully upgraded snipers and can get some great results. It will not be as good at range as a fully upgraded VSR but you should be able to get it to outperform most M4's. I get very good results out of a £100 Sten gun. I have learned that it (for some unknown reason that defies the laws of physics) will outshoot most AEG's so I started hanging back and picking people off before they can hit me. Last weekend I was in a game where we had a small team attacking everyone else in a house (anyone who dies joins the attackers) and as we started, the guy in front of me said 'If only we had someone with a long gun, I bet we could shoot the guys by the doorway from here.' So I shot a 3 round burst into the doorway and 3 guys walked out I am not going to suggest a Sten as a sniper, you can't mount a scope for a start. A good consistent AEG however can be used in a DMR role with great effect if you don't want to go fully into the money pit that sniping entails. In my experience of being shot by them, M14's tend to be the way to go for this (the Sten incidentally is internally similar to an M14). You just want an FPS just below 350 and a good hop up, possibly a tight bore barrel.
  24. So I totally failed to get of my arse and go to Antics today. Might manage to go before work tomorrow. I have built the Matilda except for the running gear as I ideally need to paint it before assembly. Was looking at the painting guide for the Aussie troops, OMG they have it all wrong. Revell wants me to give them black boots, green (long) trousers and khaki shirts. Australian troops wore brown/tan boots, by the time they were issued long trousers the shirts would have been green. One of them is wearing a gas mask bag, yet Japan never had Gas? I really would have expected some research to have been done by whoever designed these.
