Gothic.308 Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 Hi, I've been into airguns for years, and want to try airsoft, realism and recoil is very important to me, as I want to do some milsim. I don't know where to start, my local shop only had AEG's, I liked their TM M4 AEG, but I would prefer gas. I'm open minded to the platform, want either a rifle or SMG. Budget is about £600, any recommendations or advice would be great!? Thank you. :)
Speedbird_666 Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 Welcome to the forums. If I was in your shoes, I would be looking at the TM M4 MWS series. I shall direct you to the TM MWS thread on here for inspiration. There are some lovely builds on there. The guns are very well regarded on the forums, and there is tons of support for the platform in terms of spare and aftermarket parts along with a sizeable (and knowledgeable) user base.

I would recommend looking for a second hand one. They come up fairly regularly and as long as it hasn't been fucked with ie **upgraded**, there isn't much that can really go wrong. Bar the consumables and a few easy to replace springs. I have one and i really don't care for it. Yes it does everything it should and it does it fine but a well tuned AEG is better ( bar the recoil effect )
EDcase Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 Yep, as said, the TM MWS is the go-to for best GBBR M4 platform and look at GHK for AKs.
Cyberlawyer Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 I love gas. The sense of immersion is so much better than with AEG as they just feel like sewing machines to me now. Even the ones with recoil aren’t as satisfying as a good GBBR. That said for a regular skirmish (and depending on how you play) you may find yourself at a disadvantage compared to the AEG wielding masses in terms of putting down weight of fire. To my mind the best two GBBRs available right now are the Marui MWS if the M4 platform is your thing or the WE Apache if you are an Mp5 kind of guy. But then I may be biased as I own more than one of both types.
AlphaBear Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 I second what Cyberlawer has said about the MWS. The immersion is right up there with the recoil, the bolt carrier group movement and of course the bolt stop (the latter two which you can get with some brands of AEG). And let’s not forget the lo-cap magazines (circa 32 rounds per mag). The bottom line is it’s such a fun replica to use. However, you will need to adapt your style of play in so far as you can kiss your auto days goodbye. With auto brings potential cool down of the mags as an example and of course the lo-cap limit of the mags.
Enid_Puceflange Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Everything that they said! ^^^ I have recently made the jump from aeg to gbbr (I’m using Ghk M4) the immersion, the recoil, the noise, the just Cool Factor of bolt release slap, fitting a Spitfire tracer for muzzle flash. It’s all just so so cool Yes I have had to modify how I play, I pick my fights now, hardly ever use full auto either. I used to worry when I only had 3 midcaps left when using my aeg’s, that’s like 450 rounds, now I can only carry 4/5 mags with 40 rounds each! Its totally different, and a lot of fun………. BUT I ALWAYS have an aeg in the car just in case ?
Cromulon1994 Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 I've had a few GBBRs and realistically, the KJW KC02 (or ASG Special teams carbine) is hard to beat. I run mine at 0.9 joules for cqb. Theres so much you can do with one, the performance is excellent, mags are well priced.

Just watching a video on the Primary Arms HPA/M4 mag conversion. I like.
Cromulon1994 Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 @Speedbird_666 It's one of those "why haven't I had one sooner" moments. I've had (some in multiple) Maruzen micro uzi KWC mini Uzi Western arms Mini Uzi KSC TMP KSC VZ61 KWA Mp9 Escort MP5 WE MP5K WE MP5A3 GHK G5 Haephestus/GHK Groza TM AKM WE XM177 WE M16A1 Modify PP2000 TM MP7 ASG KC02 And played about with many more. The ones that stand out above the others are the KC, the PP2000, the G5 and the MP9. But then I like the KC02 the most all things considered, it's exceptionally easy to dissasemble and maintain, which makes it a great newbie gbbr.

That said, I have been using my KWA Ronin T10 special edition and do honestly feel that it gives a good compromise if you want to stick with an AEG in terms of maintenance etc but still retain a little bit of realism with recoil! But, can also second recommendations here for GBBR's - just maybe have a backup AEG depending on weather conditions and stay on top of maintenance.

lokkers Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Honestly, for a first gun I'd get an TM NGRS over a GBBR. Its great out of the box (only need to mod the connectors to deans, and Eagle6/Camoraids will do that for you), the magazines are much cheaper, and it'll work hassle free all year round. You get some "recoil" and stop-on-empty/faux-bolt release immersion too. Then once you've played for a while and you know your playing style, get a GBBR (my recommendation: TM MWS). You can then run the GBB as a primary, but you've got a great secondary if the GBBR isn't suitable. I've got 3 GBBRs (TM MWS, GHK MK18, WE L85) and a TM 416 Delta. I always aim to use a GBBR, because they're way more fun, but I also always take the Delta. Couple of weeks ago the wind was so strong at my local site that in order to be competitive I had to use the 416 - semi-auto just wouldn't have cut it in 15-20mph gusts.

In regards to the Escort MP5 I thought there were only two types, a Ford and those you pay by the hr ???
Ajax Posted October 11, 2021 Posted October 11, 2021 Since you said you are open to other platforms let me recommend you WE G39c. This is working mule and fairly cheap one as well. Those replicas are easy to maintain and repair and have good opinion to be reliable. May be hard to get new (I managed to find one) but there are plenty second hand as well. In the world of m4 dare to be different other recommendation will be WE Apache series (mp5).

Stick with the TM's and dont dick around by "upgrading" their internals. It will make them worse.
CrackCommandoUnit1972 Posted October 13, 2021 Posted October 13, 2021 You cannot best mag dumping a GBB, so much more satisfiying than anAEG.
Nick G Posted October 13, 2021 Posted October 13, 2021 The MWS M4 is always going to be a popular choice, but I cant fault my WE M4 . Used it as a base for L119 A1 build. I'ts been used at every game I've been to this year with absolutly no issues at all. Keep taking an AEG 'just in case' and it never leaves the safe zone ! I'm running a Maple leaf rubber, omega nub and crazy jet barrel in it and am more than happy with range and accuracy etc. I run 5 mags and a speed loader , one gas fill gives me about 2.5 loads of BBs .
EvilMonkee Posted October 13, 2021 Posted October 13, 2021 M4 - TM MWS AK - GHK MP5 - WE or VFC if feeling flush /thread
Supporters SeniorSpaz87 Posted October 15, 2021 Supporters Posted October 15, 2021 *Laughs in Daytona* That said, as has been mentioned try to try before you buy, plan to have a good backup primary as there will be plenty of days where it is too cold/windy/humid/sites out of gas/whothehellknows to use a GBBR. The NGRS series is phenomenal. Then look at GHK for your commie guns or the MWS for an AR. If you think youre mechanically savvy then by all means look for a cheaper option like a WE - just know that you will likely need to do more to it to keep it happy. Unfortunately the biggest downside to the GBBR world to me is the mags. By the time you have a full set of mags you could have just bought a second AEG...
