Supporters Ian_Gere Posted April 12, 2014 Supporters Share Posted April 12, 2014 Yeah I'm pleased with it in the main. There's a couple of bits that need a touch up, which is a ball ache because the method... I used a homebrew mix of acetone and dichloromethane on 0000 steel wool to strip it and prep the surface, but some bits needed a bit of fine sand paper to get the surface porous enough to accept the water based stain, particularly the gas tube cover. The stain itself is called Van Dyke crystals - apparently it's made from burnt walnut shells and it's well cheap. You can mix it in hot water but I just put a bit more volume of water to crystals in a tray and left it overnight to dissolve, because I knew I wanted it very dark. I used a 5mm paintbrush to put it on with a bit of irregularity and blend and Humbrol satin varnish spray. In needs another couple of layers of varnish to finish it properly, but as I say there's a couple of bits that need a redo... I was just putting it back together after changing the inner barrel to the new Falcon 6.03x455mm that arrived this am and... the fucking MOSFET burnt out! ARSEHOLE! It's definitely not my fault though - I've gone over the wiring with a magnifying glass and there's no break in the insulation so I've fired off an email to the supplier V^^Vgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Supporters Ian_Gere Posted April 12, 2014 Supporters Share Posted April 12, 2014 I think I'm going to buy a bakelite effect grip because it will be a right pain trying to get the effect with diluted cheapo wood varnish (which is the effect on the mag). jim1h
First posting of my gun pic :-) JG Sig 552 purchased from forum member. I have added some externals to it as it was already upgraded internally. So the suppressor, light, grip and red dot are new to the gun, still waiting on a cheek riser. First skirmish with it this Sunday. Ian_Gere and Airsoft_Mr B

CaptainSwoop
It's well made but the proportions are well, shall we say 'off' The 2cm Flak sits on a flat metal turntable with 3 'feet' to adjust for rough ground. It's wheels are part of a separate carriage that the gun is raised and fastened in to turntable and all. Those wheels are the size of car tires on the real thing. http://www.2ndpanzerdivision.com/flak_40.htm a real one German 2cm is way over engineered for the size of gun. British Army 20mm mounts were a lot more compact and simple http://www.milweb.co.uk/classifieds/large_image.php?ad=69168&cat=6 http://www.wwpd.net/2013/02/review-battlefronts-20mm-polsten-aa-gun.html
Supporters Ian_Gere Posted April 25, 2014 Supporters Share Posted April 25, 2014 Not really over-engineered, just a different beast. The British one has a carriage that just about sits on the ground; the recoil would be transmitted pretty much straight down so the flexing of the base is supported. The German gun is more versatile; it was used as an anti-materiel weapon as well as anti-aircraft so the additional weight would allow greater accuracy. CaptainSwoop
still say over engineered. It makes more sense in the quad mount though
Supporters Ian_Gere Posted April 25, 2014 Supporters Share Posted April 25, 2014 I suspect the French Commandos who faced one at the casino in Ouistreham on D-Day would probably have agreed with you. If that poxy thing had been less accurate their job would have been a lot easier!
CaptainSwoop
It's not the accuracy it's the size of the mount. It's a perfect example of a weapon designed in a time of peace. Later models of the German weapon were cut right down, the lost the armour plates for a start. There used to be a great big power operated 20mm mount that the RN used back at the start of the war. It was abandoned in favour of the simple pedestal mounted gun and powered 40mm mounts. Here is a fine example of an over engineered gun. http://householdcavalry.info/mgg1918.html
