    It being a shorty, I reckon I'm most likely to use the SRC AK indoors CQB at Trojan's mill site, and that's semi-auto only rule in almost all circumstances, so technically I could probably get away with carrying just one spare mag, as that'd equate to having 30 three round taps with just one mag change, but I'll probably get a few mags anyway just to be on the safe side as I know GBB mags can go U/S occasionally. In any case I'm in no rush, it's probably gonna be too cold to get really good use out of a GBB at the moment (I'm not using my GBB MP5K at the moment for that reason, and that really has to be used on semi auto anyway because of its mental ROF, so the slower ROF of that SRC AK will be a welcome change, in any case, my GBB pistol was indicative of how crappy GBBs will do at the moment, barely managing three decent shots out in the cold last Sunday, although admittedly that pistol has a very small gas capacity, whereas those SRC AK gas mags apparently have good gas capacity). So if I really must use an AK whilst it is cold, I'll probably wheel out my AEG AK74SU, which has four spare 30 round mags for it. Either that or just stick with my M4 and its 300 round mag.

    Looking forward to getting hold of that SRC AK though. I've read a lot of good things about it and it looks to be decent quality from the vids I've seen. If their AEGs are anything to go by I'm sure it'll be pretty nice and reliable too.

    Well either way, it's not going to be too usable without a few extra mags, and they are 30-40 quid a pop, so reckon on throwing another ton at the thing.

    I think these have gas systems designed by that bloke Tanio Koba or something,same guy who designed the KJW M4 GBBR which is one of the more reliable designs.

    Please do report on it's quality. Lots of steel has me intrigued,and for all we know the gas system could be a hidden gem

    For gears have a look at ak2m4's site, he has loads of different types, hi torque, hi speed etc, be aware with all the internal mods you plan to do you will need to experiment with springs to get the right power. TM hop rubber and Madbull Black Python barrel is a good combination though.

    In airsoft terms the TM 1911, reliable and very, very accurate. TM, need we say more.

    If TM brought out a FN35DA (AKA modern Browning Hi-Power) that might change however!

    Cheers for that, fair comments Ian. I had a secondhand SRC M4 years ago that was pretty good in its day and used entirely standard parts (or possibly had upgrades,I'm not sure) but it never let me down to be fair despite its poor reputation. Their recent G36 seems to be quite well thought of from posts on here. The Hop on the gbb 74 looks close to a TM AK in design but how close remains to be seen. Looked at a few videos of the gun in action (not just retailer ones, although AW's review states its the best gun SRC have made. . . hmmm) which is what clinched it for me. As to what aftermarket internals are available I've no idea, but I'll see how it performs and go from there.

    Well I've ordered one so will see how it goes, been thinking about a gbbr for a while to tinker with (as opposed to being a primary) so it seems a lot of gun for pretty much Combat Machine money. Any known issues to be aware of that you know of?

    I honestly do take your point and I'm not saying that what happened is not understandable from a LEO's perspective, because "gun=threat; I have a gun: shoot" is totally understandable, for the reasons you pointed out and more. But don't we expect more from those into whose hands we give the power to take life, along with the responsibility to guard us?

    All life is precious, but no all human life is not equal. Cops take an oath to put their lives at risk to protect and serve the public, they voluntarily make their lives less important than those of the public they swear to serve. Now what Tamir Rice did is without doubt extremely stupid, but he was a member of the community whom those cops swore to protect, even from his own stupidity - kids are stupid: the fact that they get themselves into dangerous situations because they do not fully understand the consequences of their actions is a known hazard. In fact it is enshrined in law - we have an "age of criminal responsibility" and although the US have this weird system where they sometimes decide to try minors as adults, and despite the fact that we, as adults, can see all sorts of reasons why this kid ought to have known better, he was by even the most punitive of judgement a child young enough that his actions can be reasonably expected to be irresponsible.

    SD, if you don't want to read this debate any more, why not click "Unfollow" at the top of the page? Personally I find exploring what I think and how i feel about serious topics (and others to which they relate) stimulating. Listening/reading what others think/feel is how I challenge my beliefs and continue to update my world view. In this instance I find I do actually respect the dedication required to police properly a lot more than I thought I did (I have been on the receiving end of some dire policing, but in comparison to being shot for stupidity, that pales into if not insignificance, at least proper perspective). And it all makes me wonder again where I stand on gun ownership: I mean we know for a fact that prohibiting things does not make them disappear, nor does criminalising ownership of anything deter people from acquiring them, but unlike alcohol & drugs, guns are a serious danger to other people... I dunno. Loz is right, the USA has a major problem and I fear that our culture is heading in the same direction, so although we do not have the same prevalence of gun ownership, whatever it is which makes the USA different from Canada, where per capita gun ownership is actually higher than south of the border, may well rear its ugly head here, just in other ways.

    PT247, no sucking of eggs, matey, any help/advice is greatly appreciated, but yep, I tried the selector in all different positions. I'm using an 11.1 1450 Lipo, which I seem to recall is recommended ( not got the destructions to hand) AND remembered the bolt release each time I changed mags. From your earlier post, definitely not a blockage.
    Straffham, I'll check the fuse if and when I can. BUT there is no way on gods green earth will I indulge in the dark and mysterious art of dismantling an airsoft gun. I WILL have some bits left over when I put the damn thing back together. Lol

    straffham got a reaction from Mr Monkey Nuts in Ares M4 gearbox replacement (ZCI Shell)
    Ok, so my Ares M4 suffered terminal gearbox failure. Even though it hasn't been used a lot in its 4 years, the monkey metal used in the original shell has disintegrated around the cylinder head. I emailed Ares for prices for a new shell, came back as 73USD posted, plus customs and admin fees when it arrived no doubt. As I wanted to keep the repair as cheap as possible, coupled with my doubts the new Ares shell would survive any longer than the original, made me seek an alternative.

    The options available were:
    1) to buy a standard V2 shell and swap the Ares internals into it; problem here being the Ares trigger / microswitch won't fit into a standard shell designed for standard switch parts, also the spring guide is different as the Ares box has a QD spring guide;
    2) buy a complete V2 gearbox such as the ZCI or Specna Arms ones which can be had for around £50;

    However Forum member ak2m4 suggested a third option; a ZCI shell which is essentially a clone of the Ares shell design, and comes with trigger, microswitch and wiring, plus spring guide. Costing £30 this seemed the best value option so one was ordered from his website with a couple of other bits. Great value and great service too!

    The shell is a budget one but seems pretty well cast in fairness. The original Ares 8mm bearings and bushings dropped in fine, I had to remove a couple of the Ares shims to get the gears turning freely in the new shell. Whilst apart I fitted a new "Core" vented bearing piston head (I always fit a bearing piston head or bearing spring guide to my gearboxes to remove spring torque) and fitted the cylinder / cylinder head / piston / tappet plate / air nozzle. No fiddling about with the trigger and switch required, they're already in the new shell and deceptively simple in design, as is the selector plate and safety (which worried me slightly initially). All that was needed was to reroute the wiring as its fitted for a rear set up, but my gun needs a front wired arrangement. After a check everything was in place, and a relube, the gearbox was closed up, the spring and spring guide fitted and tested for free movement and function, as per the pic below.

    The Ares pistol grip and motor were then fitted and the whole assembly tested electrically, and hey presto, all worked perfectly, safety, single shot and full auto!
    I was advised by Pete (ak2m4) some minor filing may be needed; I found I did have to file a tiny amount where the hop unit locates in the front of the shell as it wasn't quite "round", and a little casting flash from on top ot the shell where the 2 halves meet, plus open the holes out slightly where the small receiver pin passes through the gearbox above the trigger but nothing else otherwise.
    Time will tell how it stands up to use but I'm pleased to have fixed my M4 at fairly low cost AND been able to retain the quick release spring feature, and it still fires around the original velocity of 325FPS.

    I would particularly like to thank (and plug) Forum member Pete (ak2m4) for bringing the ZCI shell to my attention, his website www.ak2m4.co.uk is full of useful parts at reasonable prices.

    The CYMA 02 AK gearbox is now in my AK12. Theoretically, with a bit of fiddling, you could just drop it straight in, put it back together and off you go, although in practice it required a bit more effort. So for anyone contemplating doing a similar thing, here's how mine went:

    The gearbox does drop straight in place, however, the wires have to reach spring loaded terminals at the rear of the receiver which connect to the terminals on the stock housing the battery. Those wires can easily foul the gearbox and prevent it from sitting properly in place, so I made that a little bit easier by shaving two small channels into the moulded runners on the inside of the left half of the main body of the rifle, to give the wires a bit of room to easily pass under the gearbox housing. The plastic was easily shaved out using a broad chisel blade.

    The CYMA gearbox comes with a Tamiya plug on it, so I cut that off, stripped some of the insulation off the remaining wire, cut the two terminals off the old gearbox, leaving a bit of wire attached to those, and then simply joined those to the wires on the CYMA gearbox then soldered the wire twists and covered them with insulation.

    Upon putting the gun back together, I discovered a minor issue arises when switching the CYMA 02 gearbox for the original plastic one: When you slide the pistol grip over the motor section of the gearbox, you find that the countersunk hole for the screw on the bottom of the pistol grip (where the motor height is adjusted) is approximately four millimeters further to the rear than the threaded hole on the bottom of the CYMA gearbox. You can tilt the pistol grip enough to get the screw to go in and fasten up, but doing that would mean the pistol grip would not sit nicely against the lower receiver, so what I've done, is fill the screw hole (with Milliput) and then re-drill a new hole for the screw a bit further forward, which means the pistol grip does now seat properly.

    So, not quite a 'drop in' modification, but not very far off it, and easy enough for anyone to do with some very basic tools. I've not chrono'd the thing (will try to do so this week) but it does shoot very hot now and if I put a better barrel and hop up on it (which I probably shall) then it would be a very very good rifle indeed, and it is already pretty good now even with the original barrel and hop up unit.

    So, total cost thus far for an AK12 with decent internals: 69.99 for the gun, 40.13 for the gearbox adds up to 110.12. If it was any other sort of widely available rifle type, I'd say it was not worth the effort of doing it, but since it is the only AK12 you can get, and you want one that you could reliably skirmish with, then it is worth doing this little project, as sticking a decent barrel and hop on it would still have the thing probably costing less than 150 quid.

    CYMA-02 Gearbox has arrived from Hong Kong, so I'll be attempting to swap out the original plastic one for the CYMA one this weekend. The CYMA one looks like it uses an allen-key for the motor gear meshing height adjustment on the bottom of the pistol grip.

    Note that it cost me an additional 3.11 quid in DHL 'handling charges', so the total cost for the gearbox including postage and that handling charge was 40.13 quid (approximately 60 US Dollars). This was from www.ehobbyasia.com. It arrived well packaged and it took eleven days from placing the order, until it arrived, so not too bad time-wise from Hong Kong.

    I reckon it will drop in fairly easily, possibly without very much, if any tweaking at all, but I guess we'll see. Will post some pics of it when done.
