Fixing up my boneyard JG Sig-552, and I've got a rather ropey motor inside it at the moment... looking for something cheap to replace it. It doesn't need to be hi-torque or high-speed, just cheap and working properly! Attached is a pic of the ICS medium length motor for reference

    £15

  2. I went a bit "medieval" on it, jammed the motor up into position and fired a single shot, which did the trick. I started re-wiring from the battery connector backwards, so did that first. Then out came the (intact) fuse - success!! So it seems there was a flaky connection at one end of the fuse causing the main problem. I've removed the fuse altogether and soldered the wires together, all working nicely. Now the problem I have is that the motor sounds like it's got half a bag of nails in there, and it's rotating slow as molasses. I might put the whole thing back together just to see if it'll feed and shoot half decently, before spending more time and money on it. Good shout on using a motor spring on the barrel The big mystery piece was indeed from the stock, the shaped prong sticks out from the stock into the body of the gun, when it's in place. It'll need a Mosfet as one of my new 11.1v batteries fits perfectly in the hand guard. Any recommendation for a cheapo 'protect the trigger' option? I'm thinking the Gate Pico will do ... https://www.patrolbase.co.uk/gate-picossr-3-aeg-micro-mosfet-unit Where can I buy a mid-length motor? I've found a couple at Fire Support but £41 is a bit steep. Any good places to buy a Chinese special at a lower price? Edit: Well, well, well. Put it all back together, got some test shots through it on the 8.4v mini, but for some longer range shots into the garden, I stuck the 11.1v on it. Cue reasonable rate of fire (13.5rps) and a pleasing 'laser beam' stream of BB's hitting the centre of my backstop. 290-295fps with 0.28g bb's, with some hop applied (I think that's bang on the joule limit) It's not perfect, it's finicky about the mag position as I had some failures to feed, but damn, even with a possibly knackered motor it feels like there's a good gun in the making
  3. Finally got around to tearing the gun down again, now my wire and heatshrink has been delivered... I can see the gun is cocked - is there any way to release the spring tension before I crack the gearbox open? (I'm off to the pub shortly, so it's a job for tomorrow)
  4. Hi ho! I thought I recognised the gun covers from here when you showed them to me I should have said something... Anyway, hope you enjoyed the day, even though we were out-gunned by the HPA pro's on the other team Yeah, definitely like that Sort-of-related info-nugget: I saw the 'Born to kill' helmet at the Design Museum when the Kubrick exhibition was there
  5. It's not a bandwidth problem (100MB fibre)... I get this message instantly: I've had this with other embedded videos to be fair, maybe it doesn't like my Chrome... adblock extension perhaps? No, paused that for this site, still happens
  6. Cheers, will do - if changing the wiring doesn't do the trick (I think it will)
  7. Thank them for making nice optics at great prices, but I wouldn't be interested in engraving an essentially disposable item. But then I don't think I'd be interested in engraving my gun either, even though I like messing around with my rattle cans for a personalised look.
  8. I need to swap out some / all of the wiring in my SG552 gnu, which gauge wire do I need? 14 or 16 or 18 AWG? (Stock motor, spring etc, expecting to stick with mini 8.4v NimH battery. It's a tight fit around the gearbox, so the more flexible the better) And does anyone sell small quantities of black + red wire, and with heat shrink?
  9. I can't see the movies It looks like a good clone for the externals though
  10. I'm not tooooo worried about paint showing through, a quick squirt from the rattle can and it'll be fixed. I've actually got a couple of new cans on the way, MTN 94 sand colour and a light-ish green, so I might do some camo patterning on the top anyway, in which case a bit of bright green won't really be noticeable. I got a screw for the detent and also a tiny spring (as bizarrely I can't get either of the ones frpm the gun to fit in one of the switches - it has a smaller hole) So I'm just short of the barrel spring. Hopefully I can source that from somewhere... as it's bigger a bit of main spring might even work. The electrics ... it's not the trigger contacts. This gun looks very, very lightly used. The inside of the gearbox still has clean white grease inside. I'll start re-wiring it by replacing the battery connectors, take the fuse out of the loop too (the fuse is intact). The gun was firing on Friday. When I took it to the site on Saturday, it wouldn't. Cheeky lil' bugger. It might be beyond me to fix it, but at the price I paid I think I can still 'boneyard' it on and get most / all of my money back. Nowhere near doing that yet though!
  11. Blimey, working on this gun after the AR15, the AK-47 and the F2000, I now realise that this "meddling" lark can be hard. But it's scrubbed up quite prettily, I think, with the two-tone sprayed over with Halfords Camo Green I'm going to paint the mag too, not really a fan of the 'see my balls' aesthetic Anyway, apart from the cosmetics, the good news is the darned thing that cost me all of £50 as a boneyard sale does actually shoot! Yay! .... mostly. (Boo!) I'm tempted to think there's a loose connection or a short somewhere. This gun is a bit of a nightmare to put together with a lot of places where it can pinch or rub wires, and although I replaced and re-soldered one contact, and couldn't spot any obvious problems, this either shoots or absolutely nothing happens. In the absence of Mosfets and clever electronics, it must be electrical, yeah? Now it's the first I've taken this cheeky chappie apart, and re-assembled it, and it's at this point I have a major "Bedroom tech" confession to make. I've lost parts. I haven't fitted all the parts I've got - on purpose cos it was too damn hard I've got a part left over - by accident I may have used some of the screws in the wrong places The lost parts are: The spring that goes around the barrel (it's big so no idea how it could have gone walkies) The tiny screw that holds one of the selector switch mounting blocks in place (the internal silver piece, not the big switch on the outside) One of the screws for the stock - perhaps used elsewhere The parts I've got left over are: A screw (oops) The tiny springs and plastic bits to make the selector switches 'detent' . Bloody nightmare to fit 'em. Gave up for the moment. This big chunk of metal (with a spring) I thought it was a part of the stock, so didn't worry about it too much, but I'm damned if I can figure out where it's supposed to fit! Any SG552 experts out there that can tell me where that goes? Edit: Oops again... looking at the box I used to keep the parts in, there's this mystery object too: It might be part of one of my spare trigger assemblies that I used to scavenge the replacement contact from... or it might be some crucial component 😑
  12. Now as an ex-journalist, you probably have some decent contacts knocking around, from whom you can get first or second hand info (unless your journalism was working for the Dorking Gazette, or similar). CNN used to be pretty decent, but are now an example of how Fox News has moved the reporting goalposts. They're not as extreme, but they're becoming more politically biased because down-the-middle reporting isn't retaining the viewers, it seems. So I go with Lozart's approach. The consensus from BBC + Sky + A N Other if there's any doubt. The people usually telling us to "do our own research" are way too often talking about their own echo chamber YouTube / Facebook / Reddit channels. And they fail to see the irony in what they're spouting. If you ever want to laugh at Flat Earthers and their conspiracy theory brethren you'll see it in action, and it's a horrible thing when all logic and obvious truths are cast aside just "because it's what The Man wants you to believe - so I don't believe it"
  13. It's amazing the number of people who'll make light of him or stand up for him. (Yeah Trump, I'm looking at you first) My Quora feed is enough to make my blood boil tbh. I really ought to unsub from that troll-filled pile of cack. But there's usually some interesting or amusing factoid to be gleaned from the steaming mess it almost always turns into.
  14. Unless we're all stumbling around a radioactive wasteland, in ten years time the history books will be divided like this * Russia - We won against the rebels and protected our people blah blah blah * Everyone else - Putin was c*nt and invaded an independent country Victors writing their own history books will be in a minority of one. And they'll be wrong.
  15. Indeed, this occurred to me too. I've salved my conscience by deciding to both pew, and donate. Although like an absolute plankton, I managed to donate to the wrong Red Cross appeal (don't just google Red Cross Ukraine and click on the 'donate £20' link, like I did - that's for a UK appeal! Only realised once I'd finished) https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwif55ab2pr2AhVCsO0KHaS5CUIYABABGgJkZw&ae=2&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESWOD20PIflYLL7va-NGQ6E8IMX0a_NXg6ZK59fFJ1WFvIWNO5dUZvO0X1PMOLj2DWnqUmCfqjOo0vK1ct-E8XdJ3igTZnm12HEeYTQpNpnWxRe_Kxw1DN6QI&sig=AOD64_1323A7qVN1X4AASS-9W8Nk35M48A&ved=2ahUKEwiv4I2b2pr2AhXloFwKHZFJAtEQqyQoAHoECAIQBQ&adurl=https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwif55ab2pr2AhVCsO0KHaS5CUIYABABGgJkZw&ae=2&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESWOD20PIflYLL7va-NGQ6E8IMX0a_NXg6ZK59fFJ1WFvIWNO5dUZvO0X1PMOLj2DWnqUmCfqjOo0vK1ct-E8XdJ3igTZnm12HEeYTQpNpnWxRe_Kxw1DN6QI&sig=AOD64_1323A7qVN1X4AASS-9W8Nk35M48A&ved=2ahUKEwiv4I2b2pr2AhXloFwKHZFJAtEQqyQoAHoECAIQBQ&adurl=https://donate.redcross.org.uk/appeal/ukraine-crisis-appeal
  16. I think it's right to show some sensitivity at this time. However, if the only kit I had was Russian, I'd still wear it. But I'd understand if I got some comments or looks - and be prepared to explain / have a thick skin about it. Unfortunately there's definitely a bad guy at the moment
  17. Replaced the sling attachment on my F2000 with a couple of straps from this and all the securing sliders, plus a couple of metal D-rings, to make this ... which seems to be working pretty well. I originally had the d-rings at the top of the stock, but actually that made the sling get in the way when shouldering the gun, so I re-jigged it to the current position. Because of the extra webbing inserted into the buckles to support the d-rings, the sling slots in the stock don't seem to be under undue pressure, so I'm not afraid of the plastic struts breaking. And an added bonus is I don't need to use the hex bolt to keep the butt plate on now, so battery changes will be easier. For an added Brucie-bonus, it also looks a lot more like the BF4 setup (in spirit, at least)
  18. My instinctive reaction is to make the joke of "Pics, or it didn't happen"... but perhaps I won't, just this once, just in case...
  19. Enjoy your new gnu You probably will need to replace the spring sooner rather than later but that *super* easy to do, and a spring costs a tenner. Apart from that I'd seriously say don't be tempted to 'upgrade' it, this gun shoots nicely and it seems (by all accounts so far) to be reliable, so have it and keep it as your Constant Friend rather than meddling and breaking it. So says a voice of experience 😛
  20. I'd say the OP shouldn't be allowed out of the house with an open wallet, without adult supervision. If he tried to 'run a business' he'd spend the rest of his life broke and a drain on taxpayer's money!
  21. Thanks for the heads-up on that, hopefully the motor is ok! I did pull it apart tonight. The gearbox was jammed up. I re-assembled and everything seemed fine, except for a wobbly motor wire to the trigger. Like an idiot I wobbled it more (like a kid with a loose tooth) and the connection snapped. So I've disassembled again, fitted a spare connector. And then found the shimming was off. A couple of shims found on my desk had pinged out without me noticing. That's me for the night. So tomorrow I've got some soldering to do, and a shim job, and then I'll see if it kicks into life. I must admit now - I have no idea how all the bits for the fire selector switch fit back together. I hope there's a decent video out there! Oh, and that comment about me being able to put a V3 back together in 5 minutes? Call that 'pride before a fall'. For some reason this particular gearbox has had its own awkwardness that meant I spent more than a little time trying to get it back together. Which is why that broken connector was pretty damned annoying. The one definite forward step is I've rubbed down and re-painted the bright green bits with my Halfords green camo, should look nice with the dark grey receiver when it's all back together
  22. Cheers I don't have 3 hands either, and my first attempt to put a gearbox back together (thanks to a particularly awkward trigger spring on the F2000) took 7 hours. Now I can do it in 5 minutes thanks to the jig I built (now improved with extra bolts to hold an allen key in the spring guide, and a dowel rod to hold back the nozzle + tappet plate, as that was pushing the shims off the top of the sector gear)
  23. Unexpected gnu in bagging area... This really was unexpected... I drive past Action Hobbies a couple of times a week, so keep up to date with their Clearance and Bone Yard specials... saw this yesterday, made an offer on it, and now it's mine... It's a dead JG S-552, normally retails ~£160, I got it for £50. Why buy a perfectly good gun and break it, when you can buy a broken one and break it some more! I've not had a chance to take it apart, but it's a V3 gearbox (my 'speciality') Thanks to all my recent tinkering I've got a spare motor and two (count 'em - thanks @Adolf Hamster) trigger units (which is what Paul at AH thought is the problem), so I think I've got a fair chance of fixing it. If I can, I'll have a tidy little back up gun. Picked up a decently large padded gun bag for a tenner too.
