Ah, good spot, I'd only been able to find the plastic slide in orange-horror spec at BBgunz4U sites. To be fair, I got my metal slide OD one for £65 delivered from 4less using a discount code, so I can't really grumble.

I have the metal slide Army Armament R17 and yes, it doesn't run well (or at all) on "green" pressure gas in the cold. I use it so rarely that I haven't even splurged on higher pressure gas, so I don't know if that's solvable. Other than that, mine works fine for such a cheap (in airsoft terms) toy, and there's a plastic slide version of it kicking around for way less than a TM which might be cold-weather friendly. The TM does have a much nicer trigger, but I personally don't find it £80-£100 nicer - I'm more concerned with whether BBs go downrange 9 times out of 10 than optimising ergonomics.

What battery are you using? I've experienced overspin and double-firing on everything ~1.1J-ish that I've thrown an 11.1V into. Others haven't, it seems to be more luck than science, even by airsoft standards.

It's not something that I'm particularly diligent about, given that a lipo costs about the same as a bottle of BBs. That, really. Store them partially charged, not fully charged or discharged. i generally swap batteries at lunchtime which leave me with two partially discharged batteries, then I'll just leave them until charging the night before the next game. The only time I'll do a storage charge is if I forget to swap and end up with a significantly discharged battery (or I forget to take the 2nd one out and leave it overnight with a MOSFET leeching away at it).

Mmm, belatedly, I'd also recommend M-Pacts. I cheap out on most things, but after getting some nail-wreckers in CQB from HPA guns that definitely weren't shooting hot or heavy, I splurged some Bezos Bucks on M-Pacts. Yes, very much like. A great blend of protection, and easy finger banging, they almost seem designed for shooty-ouchy sports. Woodland, meh, anything works there.

I have a BattleAxe magwell adapter in a JG G36, it seems "airsoft universal" in that it very nearly fitted and just needed about 10 minutes with a file on the inside and outside to get the magwell into the gun, and M4 mags into the magwell. Now they feed better than G36 midcaps ever did, although there's a fair few inside the adapter feed that will never feed into the hop - I've got into the habit of flipping it upside down when changing mags. I'd agree that £180 is waaaaay too much for the JG. Looks like PatrolBase were flogging them for an absolute bargain £88 but are of course out of stock. I can't speak to the other makes, or even how the JGs perform now, as I bought mine from an earlier batch with an adjustable spring tensioner which is super useful for tuning between sites and BB weights, but seems to be an idea that's come and gone. Stock performance was OK, and the consistency with a Maple Leaf 60 degree and ZCI barrel is fine for CQB and OK (but not perfect) for woodland. With a Big Dragon M140, 11.1V and a Perun AB++ it'll burst fire as fast (or faster) than the mags can feed. As a point of personal perverse pride, I've never opened the gearbox, even to shim or re-grease, just spooged some silicone up the nozzle and some chainsaw oil into the shell - you can solder a mosfet to the trigger tabs outside the shell. It Just Workstm. If I were buying now, I'd probably feature-whore out on the "Specna" for the QC spring and the EBB.

Oh, here's something still available: Hordes of the Things. It's a super-generic, very abstract system for any sort of fantasy army battles that you don't want to take too seriously. It uses units rather than individual figures, so essentially you cut out some rectangular bases and then do anything you want with them: stick miniatures onto them, or print out flat or stand-up pictures, or just scribble "Giant atomic tree-squid" onto a Behemoth base, then get on with playing. You can use it for anything you can imagine: a Shooter unit could be elven archers or Thark radium-gunners[*], they operate exactly the same either way. The rules are pretty simple, and it's designed to be played on small tables. There's some emergent complexities too that you'll spot after you've played a few times - and you can play pretty quickly. [*] Here's someone using it with 40K 15mm minis. That's like 200% heresy!

Great suggestions above. Talisman is on the board-game side of that equation, sort of swords-and-monopoly, and a very gentle introduction. But it's Games Workshop money, and looks to be out of stock everywhere, it's just the expansions for sale. Thing is, there's so much variety and tastes vary so much that it's hard to know what to recommend. If you want an overview, there's a great YouTube series, Tabletop, that covers... well, tabletop games, hosted by Wil "Shut up Wesley" Wheaton. Most of the episodes are watch-with-kids friendly, it's what I used to get my children playing. Some of them are pretty entertaining just to watch, not necessarily as recommendations (for playing with people that you have to live with), like Munchkin. Exactly that. Abstracted hit-point systems are for daft lightweight theatrical fantasy. There are plenty of storytelling systems if you want that, or blow the dust off a copy of Rolemaster and see how many permanently crippling injuries you can rack up from a housecat scratch. I'm fascinated to see what Cavill and Amazon do with 40K, given budget constraints - they won't want another billion dollar Rangz flop on their hands. The suggestion I've seen is that they'll go for something in the crime series rather than raw bolter-porn, which could be intriguing - if done right.

Ah, right, I think it's 5E they're using, I'd formed the impression that 6 was already out. I was surprised to see that D&D: The Final Frontier film is, while a little cheesy looking, pretty much Monster Manual fanservice. Mimic, displacer beast, gelatinous cube, owbear and what might have been a stone drolem just on a cursory viewing of the trailer. It's almost like they don't actually hate their audience. And with 40K, it seems that we're getting the world's strongest nerd, Henry Cavill, exec producing and acting in a live action series for Amazon. I reckon he only does acting work in order to be able to afford the plastic crack.

Epic was rightly named, and the best thing was that you could put together an entire army for not much more than one 40K hero mini - which is probably why GW killed it. Doubly so if you played with folk who didn't mind you subbing in whatever else you had to hand. I won a tournament using a 100% cheese force consisting of nothing but spray-painted Marine Scout companies deployed directly onto objectives or into hand-to-hand via toy-shop Micro-Machine helicopters serving as Thunderhawks. One bloke was on the verge of tears as his beautiful Titans and Baneblades went down under a swarm of suicidal stabby scouts, wailing "But all you're doing is swapping your cheap units for my expensive ones!" Member when "elf" and "dwarf" were character classes? I member. Mmm, I'd spotted that WoTC were doing their best to turn fans into foes by killing off the community licensed system. Utterly tragic, given their history with being the David cease-and-desisted by TSR's Goliath, then after the success of MtG buying up most of what was left of TSR, and now becoming the worst of TSR. That said, both of my kids are playing whatever the 2nd-to-most-recent ruleset of D&D is, in separate groups, so there may be some life in it yet even as a gateway. I'm gently suggesting to them that other systems and settings are available.

Very sorry to hear that, and I'm glad you got it back. Out of interest, what sort of hourly rates and parts markup are airsoft "professionals" charging? I ask because I'm very lucky to have a local trusted garage that's held their labour charges at £40 an hour for years, which I consider an absolute steal. I wouldn't expect any kind of professional technical service for a penny less than that, regardless of the number of gears involved.
