Good Beginner/Intermediate gun that will last.
Rogerborg replied to JVacation's topic in Guns, Gear & Loadouts
I believe the early ones were fine, then they changed OEM and went to cheese, and they've sorted them again. The SA-E02 Edge that I bought recently was fine inside the gearbox, well finished, decently shimmed (it did need a lot of them, but it had them) and even carefully greased. The air seal wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good. Good rotary hop unit with an interesting nub, heavy brass barrel, wired to Deans (yay!) and the mosfet is basic but means that you're pre-wired up to switch to a Warfet or similar later if you want. I don't like the quick-open pistol grip base, it's more of a bug than a feature, and the M933 Fudd handguard wasn't perfectly moulded or secure (bit of tape sorted that, won't be a problem on the railed guns), but otherwise I'm having trouble finding things to complain about. The quick change spring can be done without splitting the gun or removing the gearbox, although you need a loooong screwdriver to get to the securing bolt and it's quite fiddly to refit. -
Sceptical about range of rifle claimed
Rogerborg replied to Luke-1418's topic in Guns, Gear & Loadouts
Eh, it's probably got 10% more range than all the other made up ranges. Relative range is what matters, not absolute. The thing I'd flag up is that the Specna Arms Orion gearboxes have quite the reputation for cracking, so aren't the smartest base for a DMR. Of course, I built one, but mostly out of perversity. -
Cosplay, do it, do it, doooo iiiiiiit. That's the thing, I love LARPing in my pretend space soldier gear, but haven't otherwise engaged in the hobby for decades.

They can say it all they like, but I doubt that any payment processor would agree. Not if they've put UKARA numbers on them and correctly described them (Chinesium sellers are particularly bad for this latter one). But in either case, it's not the customer's fault either, and a retailer can afford to eat the wholesale cost more than I can afford to eat the full retail. All that said, I fully understand their decision not to ship to the UK at the moment, it's clearly not worth the risk.

UV-5Rs? That's the one thing I wouldn't say about them. Every time I need to do anything to mine, I have to find and rewatch some WuTube tutorial.

£30 and up now for some single models. Utterly bonkers. And the resale value of your armies might be close to zero, as it really does seem like GW have a policy of "if it's not the latest version, from the latest Codex, don't bring it to a tournament or shop". Heck, last time I played 40K it was with a box of knock off "Space Rangers" which cost a whopping £10 for a box of 50 at the time. I hit them with a rattle can of white gloss, an ink wash, and a few licks of gunmetal, and was good to go. Now I think GW would take out a restraining order if I brought them within 2 miles of a store. https://em4miniatures.com/products/space-rangers?variant=31784032698486

Good, I'd like to see a lot more of this happening. I mean, I wish it didn't have to, but when it does, site owners should mean everything that they say regarding rules and consequences. We can all make mistakes, and get a bit of red mist on at times. But there are a very small number of excitable spunktrumpets who are incapable of or unwilling to play by the same rules and with the same good humour and restraint as everyone else, and ultimately the only way to deal with them is to make them some other hobby's problem.

That's the bit that really winds me up. You pay £75 to Ofcom for access to a bunch of frequencies, and in return they don't enforce them. Heck, I was tugged by the fuzz in the 1990s while running an unlicensed, over-powered CB set, "with my boots on" in the vernacular of the period. The only thing they cared about was why I was hanging out in a school car park at night - "Because it's got line of sight to all of Glasgow toon". They didn't give a stuff about the legality of the wireless set, and I very much doubt that you could find anyone who would care about running a 2W set now unless you go out of your way to interfere with an emergency services frequency.
-
Then can you talk to them directly about playing there? Who knows, maybe it'll spark some insurrection among the downtrodden masses.
-
Eh. PMR446 is easier, the Baofengs are a bit of a sod to program. I've got mine dialled in to the PMR channels now (of course, I have never hit the transmit button) but it was quite the chore. Sure, in the same way that I'd never exceed the speed limit, anywhere, ever, for any reason, in any circumstances.

90% of most forum and group content is people chewing the well gummed fat. I take it as a sign of trouble, that the seller either doesn't really want to sell, or is lazy and reactive (which has ominous implications for them actually posting it). You're going to have to figure it out anyway, so why not do it before you list? Usual advice for buyers, ask for a PayPal invoice listing the goods, postage and total amount that you'll be paying. Sellers, work this out in advance, and calculate how much you need to ask for in order to get what you want in your pocket. Don't make a buyer do this for you: the fees are being taken off what you receive, not added on to what they pay.

Which can lead to much hilarity and head scratching when Alice can hear Bob, but Bob can't hear Alice. It's easier to just try another channel without CTCSS, it's not like you'll have more than 16 channels in use on a typical airsoft site other than some massive milsim or festival.
-
Eh, even my Cobra MT600s have CTCSS. PMR does work, it's just that the Baofengs offer so much more functionality for just a little more money (and of course plus your loicence tithe so that Ofcom can wish you luck finding a usable frequency).
-
I'm always surprised if we still have a mostly full site at 4pm on a Sunday. It's one reason why I've put off going to a mil/film-sim because I'd expect it to dribble to a denuded end, or to see mass packing-in the moment the rain starts. I do feel compelled to wonder why you'd want to go back to a site run by a nobber. Well, now you know he's a petulant nobber as well, so that's another reason to find somewhere, anywhere, else to play.
-
Oh, I learned something today, I thought it was allocated frequencies, but it turns out it's "self coordination", i.e. "fight over them, peasants". https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0022/29272/ofw432.pdf

If you actually want it to sell, then we usually recommend asking about 70% of the current lowest retail price for the parts fitted, plus smaller amounts for anything extra thrown in (big bundles have a harder time finding someone who wants everything in them). Do yourself a favour by working out postage and PayPal fees beforehand and including those in the asking price. Opinion can vary on value, especially for rare or out of stock items, but that doesn't apply here. Best of luck.

Like PMR? Like PMR? If using the same frequency, singular, which would be like crashing a burning fuel tanker plane into a school for orphaned kittens when it's being visited by blind nuns.
-
I've only used cheap Cobra brand PMRs and the range was meh. Outdoors any topology would break them up and indoors I was better off shouting. Other brands and experiences are available. I've got a Baofeng UV-5R now with much better range. In theory, of course, I'd never use it, you understand, as I don't have a frequency loicence. I certainly wouldn't use it on PMR frequencies so that I can talk with people using PMRs, even though that's the safest way to ensure that it doesn't interfere with any actually important radio use. Using them on PMR channels would be like doing 90mph on an empty motorway at 3am, while some rando frequency could be like doing 90mph at 3pm outside a school. In other words, both illegal, but with different consequences and morality. You shouldn't do either, it goes without saying.

Yes, you don't want a "spring gun / springer" [*], and skip any site with "BB" in the name unless you know exactly what you want and why. The bulk of what they sell is disposable tat, and in any case that's a realistic imitation firearm so they should be asking you to provide them with a defence in the form of a site membership / UKARA number (but being a "BB" site, they might not). Airsoft isn't a particularly cheap hobby, you're looking at £30+ per day after buying BBs, and about £100 for the cheapest gun that you'd want to use [*]. These are the sort of brands and models that you'll want to be looking at, although other retailers are available. I've linked to the two-tones since that's what you'll be buying if you haven't played yet. You'll note that a lot of them are out of stock - this is the reality at the moment, we've hit a perfect storm of Chinese Virus, Brexit and loads of people taking up the hobby this summer. https://www.patrolbase.co.uk/airsoft-two-tone-assault-rifles All of these are select-fire electric guns meaning they'll shoot either semi or fully auto using a battery. Some of them come with a basic battery and charger, some don't (and curiously it's the cheaper ones that come with batteries), but you'll also want to budget for some lithium based batteries and a decent charger which is going to run you another £50 or so. Then add in (at least) eye protection and decent boots with ankle protection and you're knocking on £200 to get started with your own gear. But the usual advice remains: play first, then buy. Most sites do a rental package which will supply you with eye/face protection, an electric carbine and a supply of BBs, generally for about £20 extra, so £40 - £50 total for the day. That sounds expensive but includes about £10 worth of BBs that you'd have to pay for anyway, so you're only really paying about £10 extra for the gun / eye protection rental. That's less than you'll lose on buying and selling anything if you find out that don't actually enjoy the hobby. If you do love it (and bear in mind you'll get a huge adrenaline buzz the first couple of times you play) then you can go ahead and buy a two tone gun, or play at least twice more at that site over a period of at least 8 weeks, and that will get you site membership and (generally) a "UKARA" number which will let any retailer sell you anything that you fancy. [*] One exception is spring shotguns, especially indoors / very close quarters, which can be fun and close to effective, but again, rent first and find out.

Stereotypes can be both unfair and also useful.

I fear you're going to find that when you get to the delivery stage that they say "lol jk m8" and refuse to send it. You think they'd be up front about, especially if you've selected £GBP and already have a UK address registered with them, but they seem to like leaving it right to the end of the order. Could be wrong, they may have changed their mind again, but there's only one way to find out. Personally I wouldn't risk it now anyway, there seem to be far too many jobsworths involved at the moment. -
Sure, if it's a spare gun, why not? DMRs make for an interesting change of pace, and the only smart choice about airsoft is to never get into it in the first place.

They have historically been pretty good, this just does seem to be about the almost guaranteed impossibility of it making it across the Channel twice more. It's a pickle, and always a hazard when buying fragile toys from abroad, but at the end of the day, they're a commercial retailer and the responsibility to eat the cost lies with them, not the customer. -
To be grudgingly fair, he does claim that the mags are OK and it's just the gun itself that's defective, and has included fees and postage, which is always nice. To be more fair though, you can get a new, warrantied Army Armament R17 and a 2nd mag delivered to your door for less than that.
