Airsoft HMLMG from Rust
Cocha and 6 others reacted to jzmalexander for a topic
Hi all, been a few years since I made a post. Just thought I'd share my build of the HMLMG from the video game Rust. I think its one of the coolest looking craftable guns from the game, and since seeing it I've always wanted to have an working airsoft version of it. HMLMG stands for HandMade LMG, hence why I thought it would be possible to actually do this project with the limited tools & materials I had. One of the things I didn't want to do for this was to damage the base gun, so attaching this HMLMG "case" to the base gun was a bit of a challenge, but in the end everything is removeable and the base gun underneath can be extracted completely unharmed. The build: -Base gun is a G&G Firehawk (DSG version), chosen for high RoF but also the loud sound that the Firehawk makes. -Box mag from the G&G CM16 platform, perfect shape and positioning compared to the source material (but yes it also takes just regular M4 mags). -Aluminium sheets for main structure (easy to shape without needing machinery, still relatively durable). -M3 nuts & bolts to hold most parts together. -Bit of fence from garden for stock. I used aluminium sheets for the main "case" of the gun which just goes over the base gun, cut to shape and held in place using nuts & bolts. The main barrel is made of aluminium pipes except for the giant hex nut which is steel, and the buffer tube on the rear of the gun is attached by long bolts to a u-shaped aluminium piece. Its all mainly held on by the bolts on the buffer tube, and by a very long extended outer barrel which runs right to the end of the aluminium pipe, which is then held on by a 14mm CCW piece which is perfect for securing the whole thing to the base gun. Everything was made at home using a hacksaw, scissors, screwdrivers, & aluminium tape, except for the holes on the heat shield & the buffer tube/outer stock which were done at the local men's shed. To access the fire selector I had to make a lever, but it is removable so doesn't get in the way in skirmishes. The mag release is still accessible as the underside of the HMLMG casing isn't filled in and I can just reach my finger up there. The Firehawk's external bits were removed, including charging handle, and the dust cover stays open, so hop-up is accessible by opening the top cover. The weight (without BBs in mag) is 3.3kg, roughly the size of an M249. I mostly tried to keep as accurate to the HMLMG in Rust as I could, but I had to compromise on the front grip as it seems too tedious to attach. The charge handle being a brass knob for a drawer also seems out of place as I want to leave the gun as full black for now at least. Modifications: -Due to the extreme upgrade in outer barrel length, I had to replace the inner barrel using a spare sniper barrel from a M40A3, which then caused the hop-up to need changing to a Mapleleaf 70. On the first skirmish I couldn't find the hop-up sweet spot, so replaced the unit with a rotary hop unit from Retro Arms. -The magazine was rewired to a button that sits on the heat shield as the original feed method was non-ideal. Performance: The gun is largely stock as it was brand new and I mainly did this just for the "look", and the DSG Firehawk's base performance is great from the first few weeks of using it. I'm running it on a 7.4v LiPo, it does around 1.07 joules (340 FPS on 0.2) at 29 RPS, so far found it to have good range and accuracy using 0.28g BBs. Magazine also feeds with 0 issues. Since the gun absolutely vomits BBs I'm changing to 0.25s in the next game just to lower the costs slightly... In the future I may upgrade its performance maybe for 11.1v batteries, but for now I don't see any need. Definitely a bit of a crude construction, but hey it looks the part, is sturdy, and most importantly it shoots like a beast.7 points -

I'd call these rather poor quality photos, but here you go regardless. Unfortunately most are done with a phone camera with the notable exception of the first one. Paint me like one of your French Marines This was a bit rushed, so I'll probably get another set of photos with a better camera, and hopefully do a shooting video or two.4 points -
Went to Worthing this weekend to play for the first time in a hot minute. Last game day I didn't book on and tuned all my guns for the upcoming Vietnam filmsim, and the game day before I had my only gun I brought go down at the start of the day so I was running around with just a pistol, so it was nice to get out there with a proper rifle. I was running my PPS Kar98k and Bell 1911, using my Vietnam load bearing kit (US m56 webbing plus SKS chicom rig), as I wanted to make sure that it was all working as intended for the Vietnam game in two weeks time. Me and my friend put ourselves on blue team, since we saw a lot of regulars on yellow. First game was a king of the hill on a base that I don't usually play around, because it's a nightmare with MEDs around it from one side. We started on the side that sucked for sniping, so I went over to one of the other bases to make sure nobody could do anything sneaky and sure enough, I spotted some ghillies trying to do just that. Called out their position and our team forced them back, but it was a largely quiet game with a blue team victory. We then swapped sides and so I took a position in the middle of the pack, again mostly just keeping eyes. Once again, I noticed one of the ghillies trying something, not spotting him but spotting the ferns moving in an unnatural way and just waiting for his ghillie'd head to pop up, which it eventually did. I fired a grand total of 1 shot that game and got a whole 1 kill on that ghillie, but spent most of the game just relaying enemy movements to the rest of my team. Again, fairly uneventul, but another blue team victory. They also gave us players a little talk because apparently there had been some poor hit taking and some overly happy full auto trigger fingers, so they gave a warning. Also, my SKS chest rig fell off. One of the leather loops that holds the straps decided to come loose and go walkabout, so that was a thing. Luckily, the m56 generic rifle ammo pouches can hold 4x Kar98k mags each, so I dropped from 11 mags to 9 mags; not much difference, and still plenty of ammo. (and before you go "bloody hell, 11 mags?!" I will say they're 10rds each. My 11 mags is still less than a single midcap!) After these convincing wins, the marshalls moved the last group of regulars from blue onto yellow, apart from me, to try and balance the teams for the large game before lunch. It was a multi-objective game and it was far more balanced than the first two games. Yellow team had to move things to bases in a specific order and then hold that base for 5 minutes. Again, I didn't even shoot that much and just kept eyes. I had a good line of sight to just outside their spawn (though well out of range and far too many twiggy bits in the way for me to even try and arc the 150 - 200m shots it would've been), so I spent a lot of time relaying enemy team movements again and dissuading ghillies from trying anything sneaky. Saw them trying it on the same flank as the first game, seeing the movement through the foliage and calling it out to my team; ghillies become far less potent on the field when people know where they are. In the end, I'm not sure who won, but I know that the yellow team got a bunch of their objectives done, so it was probably them? After lunch we played a bunch of shorter games. I was going to swap to my m16 to make sure that works and my load bearing kit works as well, but with my Kar98k mags still gassed and loaded, I didn't want to waste the gas by gassing up all my m16 mags and emptying all my kar98k mags. Stuck with the Kar98k. I chronoed the m16 and zeroed the repro colt 4x on it in the morning, so I know it shoots well, but the Kar98k definitely needs a clean as I realised shots were going off at angles every so often. Barrel is going to need a good cleaning... The games after lunch themselves were back to being fairly one-sided again. Blue team got back to their winning ways as we played a flip can game (blue needed blue side up, yellow needed yellow side up), and I got back to my ghillie hunting ways. I took a fairly rear position, but I kept an eye on where I knew one of the enemy ghillies would go, and sure enough, I saw him cross over the path, trying to get in behind us to shoot us in the back. The marshalls asked why I didn't just shoot him, but it would've been about a 90m shot and I didn't want him to know I had spotted him. I headed back, tucking in behind a bunker to watch our backs, eventually catching the attention of some of my team. After I told them that there was a ghillie somewhere there but he hadn't crossed where I was watching, they went hunting and took him out. When we swapped sides, I finally had a more eventful game as I managed to get into a bush where I could overlook two of the flip cans. I did almost got taken out by a rental, but he made a rookie mistake, shooting a single semi-auto shot at me while I was in a thick bush. His BB rattled around in the bush but didn't hit me, so I dropped to the floor and pulled my pistol. As he moved to engage another target I popped out and took him out. He would've got me if he just let out a burst of full auto and I felt his pain because I have 100% done the exact same as him before. Then the final game was a timed assault on one of the bases. We defended first and I took up my favourite position down a path, as their respawn was down that path I knew they would try and use it as a quick means of ingress. Sure enough, a bunch of them rushed down that path, led by a friend of mine, and my shot narrowly flew past him and hit the rental behind him. This dissuaded him from trying to continue along that path, but didn't stop a lot of the rest of them and I managed to single handedly pin a bunch of them at a checkpoint that they simply couldn't push through. They eventually took the base from another avenue, but I was proud of myself for holding back the tide. When we swapped sides, I went along that side, but dropped down from the path down the hill a little and came up along the fence line. Took one out close with the pistol and then got a beautiful shot onto another at the base itself with the Kar98k, but we took the base pretty damn quick for a blue team victory (as we did it faster). All in all, it was a great day to get back to. I do enjoy hunting ghillies (especially when it's successfully done!) while wearing a bright hawaiian shirt There were definitely issues (hit calling and full auto bursts being way too long and too close), but I saw the marshalls pull players out for breaking the rules which is great to see. You'll always get some players who try to cheat, but it's always disheartening if nothing is done about it, so seeing the marshalling team take a hard stance on it was really great. I personally didn't see much non-hit taking, as I only had one guy who didn't take one of my shots, so it probably wasn't even that bad (or I just was very ignorant to it!) Now I just have to pray that the sniper ban is lifted at Eversley Alpha in two weeks time so I can terrorise the (sold out) US team with VC sniper shenanigans; target rich environment! If not, the m16 will serve well, but I definitely prefer the sniper and DMR style of play. Now I just need to make sure I do some maintenance on the Kar98k and my 1911s before then. I'll also probably give the m16 and xm177 a re-lube just in case as well.3 points

I used to be a fan of the zombie horror genre but got bored as they all seem to follow the same overused cookie cutter plotlines making them boring and predictable. While I haven't watched The Walking Dead, from clips I have seen it doesn't look any different2 points -

I'm not a zombie junkie, but like a few series, when it gets properly silly I tend to lose interest but most shows are like that...LOST to name one. I reckon they don't expect to as successful so don't plan for the long haul. I do like a zombie film tho, 28 days etc especially but when series run out of ideas they turn crap. I liked Z Nation, prob coz it didn't take it's self seriously. I've had a gripe with TWD since episode 1 tho... not a SINGLE character has mentioned the word Zombie. (as far as I know).2 points -

I used to watch this religiously years ago but stopped for some reason, just started again & laughing my arse off as I've watched a couple of episodes from S8 and seen thousands of shots fired & not a single case being ejected. I know it's a 'drama' but seriously... I'd expect ammo to be a luxury in a post apocalyptic world.1 point -

Much more comfortable and breathable Ok, there’s more fleshy bits available to be hit, but the ability to get closer to the ground and make yourself a lesser target behind things certainly helps. I did enjoy it and found no real drawbacks to it, carried 3 mags for the primary, 1 extra pistol mag and a speedloader in the dangler if you haven’t already, worth the £50 gamble1 point -

I decided that during these warmer months, it was time to try a chest rig Game changer! A lot more breathable and cooler, less fatigue inducing too I ordered a Krydex rig, a clone of the Haley Strategic D3CRM (and with the patch, who would know any different 😉 ) A pity that Krydex store on Ali Exp screwed up my order , and instead of a 3 x 7.62 insert, they sent me shoulder pads! Fortunately, the OSW’s mags did fit in the supplied 5.56 inserts, but made re indexing while playing an obstacle, as it was bloody tight, so used mags were dump pouched1 point -

I think it's safe to say that this 'comes with the territory'. Airsoft is not a big business comparatively speaking, so you combine the fact there's not much money in it with the other fact that we're running around with 'guns' and throwing fireworks and hence need to be away/segregated from anyone not actively participating, then the sites are generally going to be in locations where nobody else is regularly travelling to. Unless someone sticks to the rare examples like Precinct 13 and Z-Mart that are actually in the middle of a fair sized town, then having a car and license is (close to) a requirement for entry for the hobby I'd say. First time really thinking about it, but I'd almost say that if you're new/getting in to this and can't drive or get lifts, then either put the time and money in to driving before even getting eye pro and a gun or buy one absolutely barebones loadout then hold off further purchases until the driving is sorted. Bearing in mind of course that some people who've already commented here don't fit this category and do use public transport, so it clearly can be done. Personally though I wouldn't ever play if I had to spend hours on trains/buses and then potentially hike a long way with a heavy bag; then do it all again on the way home. Not knocking that method, it's perhaps the only option for some folks for various reason and the effort is impressive frankly, but not for me.1 point

I think this is worth mentioning when it comes up; what @Anonymoose said I would very much echo. I can recall seeing a laser used once ever at a game, which was at a woodland site and it just perfectly highlighted where the person trying to shoot me was crouching. They can potentially have some utility in IR form if you have proper night vision to see it and play a game where that combo is allowed/relevant, but we're getting in to small niches at that point. Obviously if someone wants to deck out their shooter with a PEQ or whatever for looks then go for it, they are important devices for the real firearms we're replicating, but airsoft utility is slim to none. A simple white light that's got an ergonomic momentary activation switch can be useful very often (again depending where you play) and apart from anything is great for.. you know just seeing where the heck you're walking and not tripping over and breaking yourself. I'd wager the most common airsoft injuries beyond little bb welts are probably the results of trips, slips, falls, collisions etc.1 point

Before buying anything make sure you check your site's rules on lasers. Some have restrictions on what people can use. Tbh I don't think lasers are really that useful in airsoft anyway1 point -
