Join tne club - Ive never fully understood the difference between filmsim, milsim and LARP.
It has been explained to me a few times, but the differences are still blurred.

I think what we do at Okto has ingredients of all three, but what do I know.

    Glad you both enjoyed it.

Of course although I tend to be the mouthpiece for these games, we had a team of five guys working the strings behind the game, so its very much down to all their combined skills and they are Okto Eight.

Milsim is very different to skirmish and its not for everyone. Its not non-stop action but neither is real life combat.

I think the worst thing you can get is dyed in the wool skirmishers being pushed into doing milsim - they hate it. We try to make it very clear what you're getting. We don't want unhappy people at our games.

In terms of the MDF being outnumbered, I have received various comments from players about this. One player even said that he doesn't expect to spend £60 to be outnumbered in this way.

Without exception all these comments came from players who were either doing milsim for the first time or didn't play the previous op with us.

While we do our best to maintain customer satisfaction, these things do happen in real life.
As to the comment that the government should have the best equipment and troop numbers, in the story leading up to Op Tailspin, the research establishment was a forward operating base which was both isolated because of the nature of its work and low key. The government believed the camp to be a secret and only had a minimal guard covering it. Big assets draw big attention.
The SF destroyed the Early Warning Radar very early in the game and employed a jammer to cut off the government troops from calling for reinforcements.
Furthermore, four government soldiers, demoralised and beaten decided to defect to the rebels, again not uncommon in the real world.
This did leave the MDF with a smaller side on the Sunday afternoon. Calls for artillery barrages were responded to, but there is always a lag and the artillery were told to stand down as it was too late. A Moldistan helicopter did respond and made it to the MDF FOB where it was destroyed by rebel ground fire (the vehicle still has the burn marks on the paintwork). A QRF in DPM also made a mobile rocket attack on the village just before ENDEX to assist the MDF, but alas to no avail.

Its never nice to lose due to an imbalance in forces, but those players that played both ops will testify that its a long game played over a series rather than one weekend and there are peaks and troughs in the fortunes of all engaged forces.
At Op Skylight for example, the MDF were victorious - they protected the President from assassination twice and the rebels were forced to maintain a running, harrying battle of ambushes and sabotage.
At the end of this OP, The CO of the MDF, a two game veteran, just shrugged, shook hands and is now looking forward to the next game. You might lose the battle, but you can still win the war.

BB - your suggestion of reduced ammo limits for one side is a good one. We can use that if there are ever unequal sides on a level footing and WE WILL.

BC - in terms of hay bales, we supplied your camp with sandbags and the CO knew we could arrange a delivery of sand or aggregate to allow you to fill those and construct fortifications.

Just like real conflicts, there is a lot that goes on that the average squaddie doesn't see or know about. For example, did you know about the jammer or the fact that the rebels were using a satphone to coordinate with an unseen secret western intelligence agency ?

Things will be different again in the next game - different site, different challenges, new players and four forces instead of three. The only real continuity is the storyline. Newspaper articles are already springing up on the Okto Eight Facebook page. These stories are a direct result of the actions you fought in !!

Lastly, you both fought with the MDF. I received several comments from the directing staff concerning how disciplined and professional the MDF seemed, particularly in their convoy escort.
I was driving in that convoy and was impressed. One of your number is a pilot in real life and I was further impressed when he waved the helicopter in with the appropriate arm signals.
Just what you would expect from a regular army. In contrast, the rebels, although successful and large in number, fought like, well REBELS.

Received today. Good service from Code Red - 4 days door to door. They also sent me one of their patches because they were out of stock and I had to wait a couple of weeks for despatch. Have only had the chance to test it in receive, but IT WORKS !! quite strange to hear radio with your ears uncovered so you hear normal ambient sounds as well. It seems that the radio audio is coming from both transducers which is not what I expected. Will try the transmit side later ! doesn't seem to interfere with spectacles or shooting glasses but the chunky frame behind your ears do make them poke out more than normal..

Also unlike Tactical Gear Trade who have just messed me about over some Comtacs, the supplier of this headset apologised for the delay and have sent me a free patch, which I thought was thoughtful of them.

    Hi

Welcome to the world of Airsofting and these here good forums

The weapons you have mentioned are both very good as G&G Makes some very good internals, the differences between the two weapons (bar aesthetics) is as you mentioned the blowback system used by G&G as a feature.

G&Gs blowback system for the gearbox is a simple pneumatic system, some people like them, some don't as it adds complications to the gearbox but not by much IMO.

The difference between the actual gearboxes is that the blowback one has a port hole on the top of the gearbox, the cylinder has a hole to match this, there is an additional cylinder on top of the gearbox which has a small spring loaded piston inside it and this is attached to the bolt plate. When you shoot pressure from the main piston ports some air to the small piston which pushes back the bolt slide, the spring in the small piston then returns this back to the normal place. The video below gives a good idea on how this works:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyeGfob0ZUI

Its more of an aesthetic appeal and i like it, i have a TR4-18 and have kept it plus it looks cool with the slide bolt moving back and forth in head cam vids.

The rest of the gearbox is the same, high quality gears, piston with AOE set etc.

Though i have found G&G safety levers on their version 2 gearboxes occasionally slip so you could shoot whilst the safety was apparently "ON", my MP5 had this problem but so far my TR4-18 hasn't had it.

Lastly whether you do or don't, if your gun is supplied with a built in MOSFET made by G&G either use NiMh batteries or restrict your use only to 7.4 LiPos as it does not like 11.1 Lipos contrary to what the supplied paperwork says, if you do want to use an 11.1 lipo for the Rate of Fire then change the MOSFET.

Hope all the above helps and again welcome to Airsoft

I ordered my desert locusts turbofan from tac kit, no issues. Another afuk member (Yingkid) uses the ess goggles with a turbofan. We have compared them quite extensively. Our conclusion is the desert locusts are better. The main reason for that is how much the goggles stick out. The ESS ones do stick out quite far and it impedes vision down, ie to your gear. Whereas the locusts don't. Both seem to have effective fans and there isn't a lot in it there.

I have also added a thermal lens to mine as well and that makes a good improvement as well. I got the yellow and dark lens with mine but I have never really used them and now I use the clear thermal lens exclusively.

I also wonder how this affects children ?

Just keeping to the subject of airsoft, when I was a child and wanted anything, there would always be a conversation with my father about the merits of air rifles, replica handguns (when such things were permitted) and my youthly exuberance would be grounded by my wise but supportive father. I never got everything I wanted but there was a balance and anything purchased was done with my parents support. My first "weapon" was an Airfix model of a bucaneers flintlock pistol. It never even got painted because I wouldnt wait.
My father never put me off my interest in weaponry but he taught me about safety and responsibility.

I get the impression that these days many children including my own nephews spend a lot of time playing COD, BF, etc on their own in their bedrooms, communicating with people they have never met or will meet and then get an appetite for weapons based on those "realistic" experiences.

They then start looking at airsoft weapons online and asking questions on forums.

I wonder how much involvement parents have in this funnelling ?

Do they only get involved when the child needs the parent to invoke their over 18 abilities in the purchase ?

In the 21st century where many are prepared to buy online to get the best possible price from a supplier that can reduce their prices because they need no shop or a cheaper business premise, do you think forums and social media are largely fulfilling the role of the missing salesman ?

Back in the dark recesses of the last century when people would go to the counter and get served by a Ronnie Barker character in a shopcoat and tie, the shopkeeper would be able to give advice on the merits of a suitable product.

I see a lot of review/comparable merit questions on forums effectively asking "what on earth should I buy - can you recommend something" ?

In the age when many young people struggle to read more than 60 characters before their attention wanes, there is a lot more questions than reading going on.

Is AFUK just another cog in social evolution ?

Why do you need 11.1V LIPOs ?

You dont need a MOSFET at all if you use a 7.4V Lipo.

If you are really worried about wasting your money on this gun, choose something else. With your budget, you are spoilt for choice !

Baz JJ reacted to NickM in MILSIM - What is it ?
The terms are used interchangeably by some and as distinct by others. It would be great to have a clear definition for each but it's just not that simple. I've heard people using "soft" and "hard" milsim. The soft milsims seemed closer to what I have experienced as Battlesim. All bar the last involve some kind of kit requirement and stricter rules on ammo and weapons.

    - Hard milsim (maybe more like milsim as Tier1 and Stirling) standing around on stag for 23 hours and an hour of shooting stuff. Lots of "realism" which means in my head lots of "hurrying up and waiting". A definite level or expectation of fitness and a level of discomfort. Roleplay required regarding positions and duties, but characters and back stories are unimportant.

    - Soft milsim/battlesim, less of the tedious stuff - more action. Based in a fictional or real environment, possibly taking aspects of current or historical conflicts and making a composite storyline. A degree of comfort pauses to allow those of us who don't regularly run marathons to get ourselves squared away. No expectations that players will yomp 4 miles in full kit and then fight a 2 hour running battle. Roleplay may be involved but is second to airsofting.

    - Filmsim I would deem to be a soft milsim/battlesim based on a film storyline. Roleplay could be involved but is second to airsofting.

    - Gamesim (as above but based on a game of some kind, eg COD). Roleplay could be involved but is second to airsofting.

    - LARP (I'd put zombie games in this category) based on current/historical periods or fantasy. Roleplay is the main part of this with airsoft second. A rounded character and back story could be very important.

    - Skirmish: no requirements of any kind, a free for all, anything goes.

I believe I'm quite techno savvy and shop online fairly often but I still enjoy face to face chatting in a shop but like a lot of us, I was raised in a different generation

My dad worked 6 days a week to give us the best he could as my mum wasn't around so I grew up working for what I had and appreciated every bit of it

Kids these days have far more available with computers etc, we had to read books for info, they have the internet but some kids are truly spoilt little brats who get what they want without working for it, we're in a 'throw away' society still instead of 'look after it'. As kids we did recycle things but back then we didn't know what we know now

That is how I'm trying to raise my 14 yr old boys, work for what you got and you'll get far more than just a reward, a sense of accomplishment, confidence etc, these are just a few of many things that SOME kids are lacking

Its a whole different generation now and us old gits are the ones following kids rather than guiding & leading

I believe we can't blame everything on parents or society (we had similar pressures etc when I was a kid) but there are more factors involved now we have unlimited internet access, technology & so on

I think you would struggle to find a decent electric rifle for £100 bearing in mind you also need to buy a battery and charger. The cost/investment is probably nearer £150 all in.

Look at Airsoft World, they have some DE Springer rifles at prices ranging from £25-80.

You wont be able to go skirmishing with those but if you just want to garden plink as youve suggested they should be fine.

If you plan to leave your garden at some point and join the airsoft skirmish fraternity, it might be worth trying to save up more and start with the Cyma or G&G base level rifles.
