  1. All valid and balanced points I feel. We have just finished Operation Claw Hammer (a physical milsim not an online game) and we always get a fair few new milsim players who have only played skirmish. Nothing wrong with that at all and they are most welcome. However, we use military radio comms which many have never experienced in skirmishes (some are even new to radios full stop), so the "enemy is over there" experience is often present. Practising on Arma and using a closed Teamspeak channel helps with this as we use the same comms protocols. As you quite rightly say, there are a lot of things we can't practise. We did a breaching on the weekend and the room ended up being booby-trapped on a 30 second timer with a pressure pad, so the whole breaching crew went up, but Arma wouldn't have helped prevent that. We feel it is useful to help people experience shoot and scooting and ambush skills and situation awareness, spacing in a fire team, as well as the comms etc. We don't try to teach people - not our place, but if four or five people play from one of the force teams, normally the more experienced flow down that experience to the others in the virtual world. Arma also allows us to use NVGs, assault boats and other kit that we don't use in game.
  2. An example of some of the self help videos on You Tube which are designed for Arma3 players but which are valid for adaptation by milsim players. I have Arma2 from before but some of the continued improvements which are going into 3 make it a very impressive practice tool. We did a Beta test on the Okto Eight server and Teamspeak channel which gives us internet based "radio comms" berween our players in the scenario and the first thing that became apparent (by our losses) was that we were crossing roads without covering each other - there is a standard infantry routine for this in real world armies. This is one example of where this kind of training tool can benefit real people in a milsim game. Our experiences show there are a lot more. Also, it doesnt help when you try and sabotage parked aircraft on a sneaky night time attack on an airfield only to find you have loaded 40mm smoke grenade rounds instead of high explosive. Obviously a rookie Arma error. In milsim games, we use TAG rounds to simulate the real thing. We only have a milsim every 3-4 months and many of us dont have the time, what with other commitments, to play every weekend. We have a strong community and the server gives the various forces a chance to meet up online to try a manoeuvre or two. Because its online, you can play at any mutually agreeable time and its not weather or light dependent. In fact, we can manufacture our own on the two large islands that make up the Arma training area. So, in some respects its a boon to busy milsim players with family commitments. Most of us are with partners and many have families which put demands on our time.
  3. Got a free copy of this and the graphics are very good as is the destructive nature of the environment. The open multiplayer is the normal *uckfest of people running up and down very quickly and crossing in front of you all the time, but I guess thats inevitable. Its probably fun to play with a closed group and you can then take your time and systematically work through the various environments as a team.
  4. its no different to playing Arma and games like it for hours and hours on end with complete strangers in multiplayer when you can play with people you actually know and will be playing the same kind of thing with on an airsoft field some time soon. Its also optional. Not everybody wants it, has the PC to run the game or the time. Its just something that people can do if they want. We tried to organise physical training days with military instructors, but with players living all across the country it was difficult. Last game we had three players join the milsim who only knew each other from Arma games and came from three different countries just to play airsoft milsim. Sad? yeah probably but so is knocking a little ball around a field with a long stick until you get it down a hole and so is buying lots and lots of shoes so you can store them in a wardrobe and never wear them all.
  5. Filmsim Ltd who provide a number of milsim themed games are using Arma3 as an online training resource for their Okto Eight games. A lot of airsoft players make the transition from skirmish to milsim without much knowledge of how to move in a fireteam or radio procedures. This kind of knowledge can enrich players immersion and experience and while its no substitute for the game itself, a lot of things can be practised online. The real military are starting to use more expensive and advanced simulators for training so it is logical that a diluted version might flow down to milsim. This online resource is free to Okto community members and Arma3 is considered to be one of the most realistic and affordable sims available to the general public.
  6. As you know Zak, we are trying to introduce Arma3 to our Okto Eight community as a training practice aid between sims. I dont know if R6S will be any good to do something similar with the Zoro XM games but we will see.
  7. can you play multiplayer if one player is using pc and one PS4 versions of R6S ?
  8. winter balaclava from military1st
  9. Yes we have an airsoft Milsim game called Zoro XM which is based on a similar conflict of counter terror operatives versus bad guys, so Im keen to see Siege in action. Will probably wait for a few weeks though.

    Gaming PC

Ive just upgraded my computer as I wanted to play the new Rainbow Six game and Arma 3 and couldn't play the latter on any console. Have you looked at CCL ? I saw their range of gaming PCs on their Ebay shop.
  11. I use the Abbey spray to reach all the out of way places plus their grease on slides etc. Make sure to wipe all the excess off with a clean lint free rag after cleaning otherwise you pick up lots of fluff and dirt etc. If you drop the pistol in the mud etc, always strip down and clean and make sure the barrel is clear.
  12. They are coming to play at our Okto Eight milsim in a few weeks time (Russian team of course !)
  13. You can also get leatherette cases for BaoFeng which keeps some of the weather out. Put that inside the pouch and it should be protected.
  14. Just set the frequency, lock the keyboard and get yourself a decent radio pouch. Your headset and PTT will probably die first.
  15. Its my only GBB and I love it very much lol
  16. I love the RVG but not sure it would look right on a PDW. I have a folding grip on my MP7. I'd probably go angled foregrip or a stubby on a PDW.

    Headsets

I like it - as Bright says, its really weird when you can hear your radio despite your ears being uncovered (great for overall awareness). I haven't had any clarity or QRF issues, but I find that because of the design, the transducers are attached to an ear clip which force your ears forward slightly making them look like a taxi with the doors wide open. I tend to use them as a back up as I now have some MSA Sordins, but they are professional and you can replace the lead between PTT and radio so it can be used with different radios if you have a team or more than one radio type.
  18. We have a limited supply of patches in our quartermasters store for Mercury operatives. These are quality embroidered male velcro-backed patches and measure a whopping 84mm (3 3/8") in diameter in red and blue bearing the Mercury "M" logo in white. They will be available for sale only to signed up operatives on the Mercury team on a first come - first serve basis (1 per player). We are releasing them at our cost (£8 plus postage). If you wish to order, please do so via your Mercury team group. Delivery to either the Okto Eight milsim next month or the Zoro XM game in March is free. If you want us to post them to you now so you can wear it with pride for the next 3 months leading up to the game, then please just add the price of a first class stamp.

Im using the Code Red bone conduction mic which cost about £80 iirc. I wear it with tactical glasses and its fine on RX and TX so it might be your goggles ?
  20. Yes Alex and Marek run a tight ship - recommended as a retailer
  21. Ive got the Gen3 but from memory the main difference between Gen 2 and 3 is the MOSFET. The Gen3 MOSFETS have been problematic (not on mine yet) but I only run it on a 7.4V lipo so the Gen 2 would have been fine and probably a more reliable bet. Many Gen3 owners have replaced their MOSFETS from the stock G&G one to something more reliable.
  22. Not swappable as far as I can see with my long barrel version. Try another retailer if you want the light/short. ETA Firesupport have them in stock @ GBP 315
  23. I have one and its too long for CQB unless you go for what they call the light model. The barrels are not swappable so you can switch barrel lengths.
  24. A metal spork is a good investment. Its December and the long range forecast isnt accurate enough yet for us to reliably predict the conditions. Be prepared for anything. Decide how you are going to heat your food and water and work back from that. A rationed amount of chocolate and a few boiled sweets are good to keep spirits up. You might end up having to be mobile so avoid stodge. If you are worried about any aspect like clothing, provisions etc, then just post up in your team group or the wider closed community group and Im sure your team mates or even the other players will be happy to help based on their experience. Many players have fought Eversley before and quite a few have been at all the Okto games at different times of year.
