I'm no longer convinced that it is illegal. On the face of it the law seems pretty clear - explosive ammunition is illegal, but i think it turns on what the law defines as 'explosive' and there must be a definition that excludes pyrotechnics, because otherwise mortar launched 'explosives' would be illegal also, and they clearly are not, or Bonfire Night would be a real damp squib... Fnah, fnah!

I seem to remember reading that the motor needed is a "340" but when i went looking for those nothing looked promising. I just couldn't be arsed to learn enough about rc to understand what was on offer etc, but maybe that means something to you? Unfortunately there isn't enough room in the width of a Scorpion to fit fatter wiring, although I am thinking about doubling up the 20AWG stock wire, although TBH since i added a Pico AB MOSFET and 7.4V LiPo it is doing pretty well. But... the next round of upgrades will involve a set of SHS gears, Kanzen bearings, a magnesium alloy piston, and a 130% spring - i'm looking for higher FPS to make it useful as a primary weapon, not just a sniper back up. The problem is that these things suffer from terrible trigger response as stock and although that is now sorted, I fear that the new spring will bring that problem back. I have ordered an 11.1V LiPo... do you think that will fry the stock motor? Bear in mind that even if I were to double up the wiring, the construction of the thing requires the current to flow across some pretty dodgy brass connectors, kind of like spade connectors, otherwise I'd have to radically rethink the way the grip/battery compartment is attached to the lower receiver, so even with a MOSFET it's not the same thing as wiring a hot LiPo directly to the motor...

"the punching video" how would you react?
Ian_Gere replied to clumpyedge's topic in General Discussion
Well yeah - i was only suggesting that after a 3rd offence of blatantly punching somebody without even speaking to them first, a pretty harsh punishment would be in order. -
"the punching video" how would you react?
Ian_Gere replied to clumpyedge's topic in General Discussion
I think these two incidents are very different: What happened @Skirmish involved two players who gave each other some lip and one of them threw a punch - out of order, definitely that, and rightly the subject of disciplinary action. As for the length of the ban, I think 1 month is lenient and eventually the Skirmish owners decided to extend it. That they did so tells me that they felt pressure to do so - that they were lenient at first tells me there was a lot more to it than we could see in the video. Skirmish are not hurting for green fees - if they felt that either of those involved had behaved badly enough to warrant a life ban, a life ban is what they would have dished out. There was a lot of "what if it had been..." comments here and on facebook - well, it wasn't. If it had been something else, someone else, some different circumstances, it would have been dealt with differently. That they do deal with all incidents on their individual merits is one reason why the marshalling @Skirmish is so good - there is no hard and fast 'one size fits all' response - Skirmish marshals are trained, not just airsofters who know the rules, and they are paid, not just given free games (deliberately because a paid employee either does it the way the employer wants or they get sacked, which is a different attitude to someone who is an amateur doing a favour for a favour) and, while people who love rules want them written in stone, if they, or you, visit Skirmish you just have to trust that the marshals will guide the day's play towards the most enjoyment for the most players. If you want anything else, it's tough titty. In this case the incident was between the two involved, was jumped on by the nearest marshal, and did not turn into a full on shouting match between groups of mates, or a brawl. In the vid above the lad comes around a corner, sees the opposition and starts shooting - something any of us could do if we had lost our bearings and/or did not know the site. Nobody tells him it's their respawn, or even says, "WTF?" - the bloke nearest just lamps him. That is a full on cock. That is someone whom should be banned for a long time and whose deets should be circulated, because that is someone whom cannot be trusted. It's completely different to being involved in a row and losing your temper - it's a predisposition to punch first and think second. Nonetheless, a lifetime ban is not something I would ever recommend because it is so final that people are likely to go to great lengths to wiggle/blackmail/bully their way out of it and also likely to take revenge if they feel hard done by. I'd go with 1 year for a 1st offence, 3 for a 2nd and 5 for a 3rd... -
I'm planning to be there on the 22nd - my 1st time. I will be taking my PP-19 Bizon for her debut... must think of a name for her by then

What brushless motor were you thinking of? I've been wanting to get a motor with more torque for my Vz61 Skorpion and they use the same gearbox design.

Gate Electronics Pico SSR2 MOSFET - £13.50 posted / on sale from fire-support.co.uk - get 'em before they're gone! Thanks to Igilmour for that heads up -
^^Holy shoot, batman! That's a good price - the version 1 works excellently, so I'd expect the same or better from the version 2. f-s here i come... It seems f-s have come to their senses regarding shipping costs too - £3.50 signed for (OK it is 60p over what RM charge, but they need an envelope and a small gratuity lol)
-
Yeah, the battery tray. I take them out anyway so i can fit a Turnigy NT LiPo in there. But I do have to modify the top strap of the gearbox, to hold the cocking handle spring in place... but yeah, the VFC clone is better.
-
I use Maplin 15A power cable - the insulation is tougher than the flexible silicone wire people tend to recommend, it has the same cross section of conductor, and it's cheaper.
-
If there isn't a grub screw holding it on, you could try heating it up quickly - that should make the outer thread expand faster than it can conduct the heat into the inner, so it should loosen.
-
Maybe. Do some research on AK-103 though. That stock does look more like the 'non folding LR300' design, but the Chinese Type 56/2 stock is somewhat similar. They have the same gearbox, hop unit, and barrel.
-
I don't think it is a real world rifle, no. The receiver is an AK-74 type, as is the flash hider, but the magazine is 7.62x39mm, which is the wrong calibre - it should have a 5.45x39mm straighter mag. Although I suppose it could be intended to be a prototype of the AK-103 - but real 103's have polymer furniture.
-
I totally know what you mean. You could fit a butt pad to it - like this. It's not much of an extension, about 20-5mm once it's fitted, but it may be just enough for the stock to shoulder where you instinctively place it.

Thought I'd put this question out there....
Ian_Gere replied to Steelrain's topic in General Discussion
There are different types of mesh and most of what we call 'mesh' is in fact not, but rather perforated sheet. I'm pretty certain that Hero Sharks perforated sheet would withstand 00 buckshot from close range, but be that as it may, it will withstand anything you could fire from a BB gun, whether within UK site limits of 500FPS x 0.2g BB @20m range, or point blank 25mm range (the average distance at which we chrono to test that a gun is within limits, so basically the worst case scenario) which we know it does withstand, or some monster dick-around-gun with an M200 spring, 6.01x700mm TBB, firing steel ball bearings... but Hero Sharks have the largest holes of any commercially available 'mesh' goggles, so they allow the largest fragments through. But these fragments, even in the worst case scenario on a UK site, cannot be carrying more than a fraction over 0.1 Joules, which is not sufficient to damage your eye. But at the other end there is the kind of cheapo perforated sheet used in the type of goggles in that video and the mask in that starter pack - a single shot cannot pierce it. In my own tests it took 17 hits from 0.2g BB's at around 330FPS full auto into exactly the same spot, from 25mm, to get one to pierce the 'mesh' - or 14 fired semi-auto (because full-auto BB's hitting each other absorb some of their energy). Which is well within 1 second's rate of fire of many AEG's, but assumes that you could keep your head still (even if you wanted to) - which you couldn't. All polycarbonate lenses either fog or rain out. That is a fact. It is just a matter of how long it takes for it to happen. You can delay it with things like Cat Crap or Fog Tech and these treatments may delay fogging/rain out long enough that you can get through 40min games or longer without suffering, but that is unlikely unless there are gaps around the edges of the frames... Whatever you choose, be aware that shooting glasses with gaps around their edges are not designed for airsoft. It is possible for BB's to ricochet off your equipment and fit between them and your skin - a person was hit in the eye like this relatively recently. He did make a full recovery, however it was a lot worse than any damage a BB fragment could do, even if you were daft enough to rub your eye before rinsing the fragment out with water. You really should choose eyepro which fits flush against your face. The way forward is probably polycarbonate goggles with a fan, such as ESS Turbofan. Guns wise... join the dark side - get a CYMA CM.048 -
The Manor are always doing themed weekends too - it's on my list of sites i want to visit in 2015. As people have said above, they are quite different game styles: I enjoy the adrenaline of CQB - if it's a good site, with lots of hiding places/rubble/barricades/etc then you never know where your next opponent is going to pop up from - it gets my heart racing and my nerves jangling... But I also love the tactical aspects of woodland play - if the site is big enough then you can operate at distances where camouflage is effective without having to be immobile in a thick bush - the whole outflanking and coordinated attacks malarky, ie proper tactics, is great fun - and whilst you can work in small teams, or pairs, in CQB, especially for room clearance, you're often in small spaces and/or choke points which restrict what more than 2 people can do in conjunction, whereas outdoors you can occasionally get a degree of cooperation amongst loads of players... I agree that room clearance in teams of 3 or 4 is some of the best airsofting going, but when a plan involving 5-6 groups of people comes together, when everyone does their part and you rampage through the opposition like Harold Shipman through an old folks home, even if you're not in the front line getting the spectacular hits, it still feels great!

No it won't.
-
Is that a CYMA CM.048M, Chris? If so, yeah I believe 50m ootb. Apart from a 6.04mm barrel they have a split bump hop rubber which helps to make sure that the BB is forced into the centre of the barrel, so hop up is applied evenly to either side - this improves accuracy, but also, because it improves the stability of the back spin, increases range, since the Magnus Effect is operating directly against gravity more than on a BB which rocks back and forth about its horizontal axis, or yaws, in flight.

Broking - making other people broke (just messing)
-
No there isn't. You know why? Because it's heresy!

At less than 12V, although there can technically be a short circuit, the resistance of the water is so high that the current takes 'the path of least resistance' ie down the wires, so it doesn't make much difference - just a slight loss of power. Not the case with a hardwired MOSFET though - in that case the command voltage need not be particularly high so a wet short across the trigger could cause the gun to fire on its own. As James said above, there's no need to disassemble a gun for a bit of water, but you should thoroughly clean the barrel once it has dried because the evaporation may well leave a solid residue.

Paypal or credit card when buying from overseas?
Ian_Gere replied to straffham's topic in General Discussion
PayPal buyer protection definitely does not cover RIF's. So far we do not know what their attitude to parts of RIF's may be. -
@Skirmish Mansfield we have played night games with mixed semi only and full auto allowed zones - when the home base area is in play, it is semi only to minimise the risk of damage to the video surveillance system. I don't believe it's necessary to pander to people worrying about overkill. It's quite rare anyway and I mean, so what? If people get all diddums about it, they shouldn't be airsofting full stop, let alone at night. The increased risk of accidents makes more sense, but people ought to be wearing airsoft eyepro, not shooting glasses, so it shouldn't make any difference.
-
It would be possible yeah, but i don't think it would look good. You can buy short rail sections, with bolt holes to attach them. To make it look good, I think you would be better to make the lower handguard from wood yourself, so that the underside of it was flat, for the rail to attach flush to the woodwork. Or you could get a Romanian AIMS wooden front grip - either an airsoft one, or from a real steel AIMS would fit.

What are you getting for Christmas? (Airsoft wise)
Ian_Gere replied to SimonQuigley's topic in General Discussion
I don't do xmas either. I'm not sure which I despise more, xtianity or false bonhomie. My birthday is not long after but I'm probably going to ask for some metalworking gubbins as pressies for that - although I will use them for making airsoft stuff.
