  1. I think what you have to realise is that this forum is for the whole of the UK, not just a bit of it.

There are a lot of Facebook groups for regions within the UK, but I don't think there are any forums, because the regions are too small for them to be worth making a forum for, so Facebook has filled in a lot of gaps.

I imagine in the US it's different because the scale of the place is significantly more massive. I bet there are states as big as the UK.

But also, aside from it being a scale issue. Why would we want to draw traffic away from the forum and to Facebook? If there was a Facebook group instead, it'd be easier for everyone to just do that. Might as well get the hammer and nails out ready if you're going to set the coffin open like that.

  2. Yeah they don't make CO2 long mags.

I've heard from a few people that long mags are just generally worse overall, the weight of them and the fact they extend out of the mag well so far makes them move around, so the gas seal isn't great, makes them pretty inefficient, especially on full auto.

Surprised at your negative experiences with green gas mags though, I've got 5 and I've never had a single issue with any of them, 3 of them are more than 2 years old.

The CO2 mags by comparison are bloody awful, shit screw caps, prone to leaks, harder to repair, harder to source spare parts, more expensive, I'm fairly sure they're the reason my Gen4 nozzle snapped in half too. Green gas all the way.

    ...Well, propane.

  3. No optic looks right on a classic AK, because the lack of any optics is what makes it look "classic" lol.

I think 47s just look wrong with any attachments, unless you're going to clearly modernise it with rails and everything. 74s you can get away with basic stuff added along with classic style, wood furniture, but Russian optics only. Kobras, PK-As, PSOs at a push, perhaps.

  4. Isn't dry firing bad...? Or have I been lied to?

Dry firing is fine in gas guns, it's only bad in AEGs or springers because the presence of a BB slows the piston travel, without a BB there the piston head will slap into the cylinder head with a ridiculous amount of force and could eventually cause damage, or break the gun entirely.

In a gas gun the mechanism relies on the amount of gas travelling backwards to reset itself, the amount going forward is of no consequence and won't change anything whether there's ammo loaded or not.

  5. Fines just fucking piss me off in general.

I wouldn't mind as much, if they were actually intended as deterrents, but they're clearly just there as a revenue stream. I once got fined £50 for littering; when the letter came through, it said they'd asked me to pick it up before issuing the fine, which they never did, and it was still there 2 weeks later.

So not only did they fine me for littering and lie about the details of it, but they didn't even pick up the litter themselves. So yeah, fining people is CLEARLY about cleaning up the look of the place, and not just pocketing £50 off 15 year olds, isn't it? Cunts.

Turns out it was illegal for them to even approach and issue an on the spot fine to a minor, but they didn't include that in their report either. I was and always will be willing to argue the toss against any fine if it's clearly just there to provide added revenue, until they drop the charges. It's total bollocks that they're allowed to get away with it.

D'you know that the people whose job it is to hand out fines are actually given quotas to meet? So they're going to actively go out of their way to give people fines, just to save their own job! I think they ought to reinstate state executions for whatever dickhead thought up that genius idea.

  6. I think they've captured the essence of everything really well.

Sure, they've got details wrong, and there's some stuff that's truly unforgivable... Rotating charging handles, anyone?

But on the whole I don't have a problem with stuff being wrong, really. Most people watching don't know any better, and it's not like it takes anything away from the actual content of the show.

  7. Of the 3 sites you mention I've only been to Skirmish, and it's been my regular site since I started playing 4 years ago, really great site. One of the best outdoor sites in the country by my reckoning and the staff and facilities are probably the best I've encountered in my time playing too.

Closer to home, there's Skirmish's other site - Skirmish Airsoft CQB, which is in Rotherham. Though they don't do hire kit unfortunately, it's a pretty hardcore site and I think they worry people might slip or run into something and accidentally break hire guns.

There's also Tac House: Spartan in Chesterfield, again it's an indoor CQB site, they do offer a hire package though, and the site's awesome. One of the best CQB sites I've played. Run by a very experienced bunch of staff who used to run The Stan in Sheffield 2 or 3 years ago, which as it happens is actually being redeveloped by Skirmish, hopefully it'll be open before too long. Probably be early 2015 at the rate they're going at the moment, they've had a lot of set backs. The Stan will be well worth keeping an eye on though, because that probably is the best CQB site I've ever played.

Much closer to home, there's Bawtry Paintball Fields, who on (I think) a fortnightly basis, run airsoft games under BritTac Airsoft. Bawtry is a pretty awesome site and BritTac are very well known, practised airsoft game organisers, they regularly run MilSim events at MoD training facilities, up and down the country.

They're the best 4 sites in the immediate vicinity, but there are some others, Black Dagger in Dronfield and Black Hills in Chesterfield off the top of my head, sure there are more but it's too early for all this thinking lol.

  8. As I understand it, G&G have used this as the sort of "tester" platform for all this new AEG innovation style shit.

When I was reading about it a while ago, it had a handful of unique features which sound great on paper, but when thrown into the middle of a market full of people used to working their way around the old, trusted stuff, it's probably more bad than good.

The motor is built to be a sort of QD system, from my reading it seems like G&G want to eventually end up with very modular guns where you can just add and remove bits without there needing to be a huge, complex disassembly process. So expect them to be releasing the motors compatible with this system, so you can just remove the stock, slide the motor out, slide the new one in and voila, done. The beauty of it is that there's no wires. Everything just clips together, even the battery.

The downside is that no wires = more connectors, which ultimately means a less efficient use of power; not to mention the fact that standard motors can't be used. Batteries can probably be used with an adaptor, but that's just adding even more connectors lol, and the part compatibility issue is a pretty major one, which for the majority of serious players will pretty much sound the death knell for it.

It's got a snazzy electronic control unit in the gearbox too, I don't know if it's programmable, but I think it's more than just a mosfet. Oh and a quick change spring.

If AEGs had never existed before, there wasn't an enormous wealth of parts available for them, and people didn't know how to work on them and make them better, then this would be one of the most amazing new guns on the market.
But as it stands, G&G seem to be trying to reinvent the AEG, which just isn't going to happen by restricting part compatibility, but at the same time, nothing's ever going to change if you don't try to challenge the current model, so we'll just have to see how it goes.

  9. My WE Glock, which cost me £85 new, is consistent enough to hit a man at 40m without much bother, so long as they're unaware and presenting themselves as a full target of course.

When the weather gets cold I can change gas, either Mapp gas, WE Nuprol 3.0, or CO2 and get the same results. No worries running it all year round, and as a CQB weapon I wouldn't trade the trigger response of a GBB for anything.

  10. I don't think they're worth it at all unless the limit is 425 or higher, having minimum engagement rules just totally kills them for me unless I'm going to be able to get a significant range advantage.

My regular sites allow full auto up to 370fps and DMRs are right up there with bolt actions at 500, so the scope of effectiveness for DMRs is ridiculously vast assuming you can tune an AEG to be consistent and reliable at 500fps. That said, most people will keep them around the 425 mark anyway just to allow themselves the luxury of visiting numerous sites in the area, since DMRs at 500fps is fairly rare, and as you can probably imagine, no one wants to dismantle a well tuned V2 to change a heavy as fuck spring... I think I'd certainly rather shoot myself in the ball sack than have to piss around with heavy springs in version 2s on a regular basis.

I think if I were going to get a DMR I'd base it around a P* system, or possibly a GBBR, since it's easier to set the fps when you don't have to deal with springs.

  11. They look pretty similar lol, the OS is a little sleeker and more boring looking, and it makes it seem like there's a huge empty space under it because there's no lever to flick between 1-4x mag.

Doesn't help that a lot of the Brit Forces impressionists are just compromising and buying the DR for their L85 Afghan builds, even though they're wrong. Just helps circulate the incorrect info. I don't think many people actually realise that there are multiple different types of Elcan Spectre.

I'd love to know more about the micro red dots the OS models have fitted on them, I imagine they're still Docter sights, but the little case thing they're put in looks enormous.

I always thought it was funny they called it a Light Weight Day-sight, when light is the absolute last thing it is.

  12. the new standard optic for the SA80 is variable, ELCAN Specter DR; 1x-4x zoom

though they're just over $2k a piece... not really airsoft suitable :)

The OS is the L85 standard optic, DR is a different model.

In response to the OP though, any full blown scope is massively overkill for an average AEG, even ACOGs and stuff have more zoom that we require them for. In reality 4x zoom is used to engage out to 600m lol, we barely shoot 50.

Red dots are the way forward, for all situations. They're quicker and easier to sight in than irons, they often have better adjustability and they're easily accurate enough to zero reasonably well on an airsoft gun.

If you're going to use a zoom, it'll be more use for scouting things out and checking that the lump of log you think might be someone's head, is actually a person's head. It doesn't really offer you that much over a red dot in terms of ease to hit the target.

  13. ^^^ That

A lot of new players think that because of the weight, heavier BBs will get pulled down out of the air quicker, but we have hop! The Magnus effect, fighting against gravity. So as long as your hop can send the BBs straight, that can adequately fight gravity. The shot only has to fight air resistance, and a heavier BB takes more air to slow it down. Plus, they might start off going slower, but they carry the same energy, and they maintain their velocity, and thus their energy, for longer because of their weight.
