Really wasn't expecting that. Thought business would have been booming for them. Also would have suspected that sales would have been catching up to GoPro's? Again, really wierd, really unexpected!

That all rather sudden

That's what I thought! There must be some sort of inside reason why they shut but I can't for the life of me thing what. Not when you look at their sales figures!

Business closure could be for a number of reasons, the main thing that comes to my mind is that possibly the owner has sold the contour franchise to a major company which has absorb contour into its own business leaving contour as a company...... Gone or rebranded

Posted

Yea could be. Seems a bit selfish though if the company can still continue to thrive and make profit- advancing up the business ladder.

That what some companies do give it time and I would imagine Contour cameras will appear under a new name

Did a bit of searching around and yep, no doubt about it. Very surprising.

Was just weighing up the Contour vs GoPro debate myself over the last few days and I was leaning towards contour, so hopefully someone else will be picking up all the designs/specs/facilities etc and carrying on production.

Sony are a growing company in the sports camera industry right, maybe they will pick it up.

I so think Go pro's are ridiculously priced for what you get. But some people race about them so I don't know.

just been on contours website and it says nothing about them shutting down.

It's suprising, yes. I'dve thought they were catching up to GoPro rapidly. Not much of an issue for myself though, getting a GoPro soon :D

from reviews and tests. i see that the contour Roam 2 is better then the same level Go Pro which is double the price.

if your looking for a camera i would 100% get the Contour HD Roam 2. i would have got my own one but im taking a year off.

they are only like 100 quid. if you look at eds vids. he uses a contour HD Roam 1 and his are good quality so the 2 would be even better.

i hope they stay around i def want one when i get back.

Best get snapping em up quick – while stock lasts.

Not sure this will replace the Roam though- seems similarly priced to the GoPro!

Is there any point in getting one now though? Should the lenses get shot out where would you get a replacement? I think Ed had issues getting one, even when the company was running.

Yeah, that was a reason I wasn't going to get it as lenses were a pain in the ar*e to find :/ BUT the main reason is that it's not just for me, it's for me and my brother. Were going halves, and he plans on doing bike jumps and stuff and going into lakes, so the fact it comes ready with underwater housing is why, as if we were to get contour we'd be dishing out another £40 and then other cases and stuff= £60-80 in extras :)

It's true - I think Ed's lense took a hit recently and cracked, something like that. Not noticed it in his videos though.

bad news. less competition :(

And less competition = The more expensive other action cam companies can afford to be without a loss

might be that I'm tired, but didn't quite get that. anyways the more/better competition, the more pricing, technology and quality (etc) is pushed.

The full extent of the crack is just out of shot, but one of the branches of it can be seen under certain light up in the top left corner, the angle of the crack is just in line with the angle the camera looks at it, so it's only when light passes directly through it that you can notice it.

If I switched back to 720p you'd be able to see the whole crack. I think I'm going to have to buy a proper 3mm lens cover for it and tape it over the front of the whole camera or something.

The lens kits for the Contour ROAM series weren't shipped outside the US, all the lens kits online were for the Contour HD, which takes completely different lenses which don't even come close to fitting. So they're a massive bugger to get hold of. I emailed Contour directly and they sent me one lone cover as a "good will gesture" but they wouldn't let me buy a set or anything.

So if you get one, definitely get a cover for it immediately.

Yeah I was looking at those, but I'll need to get the RIS attachment and a small piece of RIS, and then attach it to the outside edge of my camera, which I think would make it massive.
