While I would agree that governments and special interest groups create "fictions and accumulated unspoken inconsistencies" that suit their own needs, with Brexit possibly being the most impressive of these in recent UK history, I am not convinced that there has been "a plainly consistent denial of the quantitative, as announced by those who announce the quantitative itself, to an audience plainly experiencing the contrary", at least with regard to COVID-19.

I think that one of the problems with such an assertion is that "the audience" only experience what they experience, which is narrow and limited; another, when directed at the pandemic, is that "the quantitative" is, of necessity, historic, rather than being current or an entirely reliable guide to the future.   People, even (or perhaps especially) experts, will interpret that data according to their own specialism and training; for example, public health specialists will generally err on the side of actions that they perceive as protecting public health.

    Regarding your edits:

[what is perceived as]: Perceived by who?  Would letting the virus at its height (or what was hopefully its height) rip through an unvaccinated population have been better for public safety?  In the purest sense, we can never "know" that.

[finance sector of the]: Disagree; all the sectors that are either of "interest" to members of the government and those who fund them or which are perceived as being essential to maintaining the support of their voter base.  However, the finance sector may well be the most significant of the former.

[insider]: Yes, especially the back benches, which the current government seemed to think it could take for granted.  We now see the wonderful spectacle of the potential successors to the fornicator-in-chief being told what to do by the 1922 Committee and others in order to gain their support.  Essentially, UK government policy on the pandemic is now being formed by a group of backbenchers.

[by maintaining the fiction that tax and spend actually happens, and that this is being managed responsibly]: tax and spend does happen, so that part is far from being a fiction.  Is it managed responsibly?  That is arguable with individual answers probably being dependent on one's political and economic viewpoints.

Simple answer: politicians who are trying to balance public safety, minimising the damage to the economy, keeping various pressure groups happy, maintaining or improving their chances of getting re-elected and trying not to get deposed by their own party.

I am sure there are more complicated answers.

Imperium run defined types of events: skirmishes, Ground War and Battlesim, along with the occasional Milsim.  Each has its own set of rules on mag types, ammo limits etc and different levels of command and control.  There is a core set of players who tend to attend all of them, but also some who only attend one or two types.

What a great thread/conversation. God I've missed forums!

Loads of great ideas suggested but as had been mentioned the dick's will be dick's regardless of the rules.

My recommendation would be to have more specialist games. Gunman run a skirmish weekend (anything goes within reason) once a month and a filmsim (ammo limits, different medic rules and teams by camo, mid caps encouraged). I've never seen another site do similar, the occasional "milsim" day or gas and shotgun but that's about it. My main moan about gunman is I have attended a few of their advertised filmsim games and they were effectively how they do skirmish days (I've done them when run as filmsim and it's very different).

It's very rare that event organisers are explicit enough about what each event type is and how it differs. For ages there was chat about what milsim is, it never really resolved, people just got bored of the conversation. I'm not encouraging we have that conversation but if organisers put on an event and could list what it is for and what it isn't. Skirmish - hpa allowed, no ammo limits, some respawning in field as per individual game rules. Etc you as the player then know what you're signing up for and I think the differentiated game would draw more players in from further around.

Ultimately I think we are paying for the experience from the day and while sites can't guarantee if you're going to have a good day, they can be explicit about the rules for that event and have events that cater to different groups within the community.

I saw an event recently for just tm recoil owners only, while I could have gone I didn't think it would make the game more enjoyable but it was nice to see the option.

While it is very likely that COVID-19 escaped from the Wuhan lab, it shows no evidence of having been man made.  It does show all the characteristics of being a naturally occurring virus.

I am not a virologist, but have a friend who is.  Similarly to many virologists around the world, his team have been studying this thing from the start; there is no evidence whatever that it is man made.

Incidentally, I was in Wuhan in December 2019; there were reports of a cluster of pneumonia cases in the days before I flew home on 17th December.

As for Omicron being "trucked in" to Africa, that is not at all supported by any of the evidence; the same is true of your bizarre claim that Tredos (I assume you mean Tedros) is a member of the CCP (actually the CPC) as he is neither Chinese nor a citizen of the PRC.

Given your apparent deep knowledge of China, I assume that you have travelled extensively in that country and can talk with the locals.
Belief is less valid when it is not based on facts and is based on delusional conspiracy theories.

Why should those who propagate conspiracy theory nonsense be tolerated?

When those viewpoints are clearly delusional and are damaging to our understanding of, for example, the nature and spread of this virus, that is potentially harming all of us.  It is somewhat similar to the deluded fools who "believe" in Q, that Trump won the election and who attacked the Capitol.

Based on your comment, I can only conclude that you have no problem with, for example, those who "believe" that the Holocaust did not happen or who believe that their religion requires them to kill gay people, apostates and women who dare to break the rules.  After all, those are just their beliefs and viewpoints.

I know someone who believes that COVID does not exist and that the vaccines are designed to enable "them" to monitor and control us.  Consequently, he refuses to get vaccinated or to wear a mask. But, hey, those are just his beliefs; that he could quite easily be spreading the virus is irrelevant,

colinjallen got a reaction from Tackle in Any help appreciated on trying to end the FPS/joule Chrono issues at sites.
One thing to consider is site insurance; when we had insurance, one of the conditions was:

    No guns that have a gun velocity of greater than 500 fps single shot (328 fps for risks situated in Northern Ireland), or 370 fps fully automatic (328 fps for risks situated in Northern Ireland) are to be used in any skirmish. Players may use their own modified guns provided that they comply with this. The Insured must chronograph the gun the first time the member plays at the site and after any modifications to ensure compliance;

We talked to a number of companies before taking out insurance; that condition was common to all of them.

Given that it is impossible to know if someone has modified a gun, the only way to conform to that is to chrono every gun at every game.

Sites that do not chrono (hello, Ultimate Wargames) have probably invalidated their insurance, which has some interesting ramifications.

As Tackle has stated, sites have a duty to ensure safety; that is why poor chrono practice and shit marshalling are unacceptable.

The law does not mention weight, only energy:

The permitted kinetic energy level is—
    (a)in the case of a weapon which is capable of discharging two or more missiles successively without repeated pressure on the trigger, 1.3 joules;
(b)in any other case, 2.5 joules.”
Indeed; I just put it down to...humans.

He he… well through all the fun above I have learned stuff - which is great!  Seems that the site is actually testing Joules on bb weight - they always ask you to bring your mag and say what weight you are using.  Just they didn’t actually ever say so at the site previously.

But I can now see that they have changed the website at some point in the last few weeks to confirm that they have a flat joule rate and will test at your weight….!

which I suppose is what we are saying is the right thing to do….

that's its own kettle of fish.

one side of the argument is a players personal chrono won't be subject to the countless tube strikes, bb shards and damp storage conditions that a site chrono will.

the other side is the site chrono (wether it's correct or not) is the one that will define wether or not you're allowed to play.

the other approach to the argument is any cheap chrono that isn't properly calibrated should be deemed useless.

as a practical term, if you can't access 2 or more chrono's that give agreement for a particular pew (under the same conditions that is, so same gun, same ammo etc), go with whichever one reads highest to be safe.

it's part of the reason why you don't want to necessarily push to get a gun to be right on the limit, as it just takes a site chrono to be over-reading by a couple of fps for you to be turned away.

What power is the spring?  What motor is it?

Maybe open it up and check the shimming; if that is ok, reassemble it without the piston, spring and ARL and try running it with the motor.

I do wonder whether Shamal has sussed it; it does sound like it could be reversed polarity.
