  1. @Tommikka very informative post Airsoft Olympics vs Airsoft I would argue airsoft does not have to lose anything, because the format and ruleset for Airsoft Olympics will necessarily be something new, it is yet to be invented, but of course those international tournaments will be good references. Airsoft vs Paintball Airsoft has advantages over paintball being a less messy and arguably more scalable and accessible, and with an improved ruleset (including mandating a certain player to ref ratio, for example, to minimize cheating) I think airsoft has a better potential than paintball at growing. Delta Force had a valid vision but wrongly executed. UKPSF is perhaps halfway there, airsoft just need to surpass it. PR Department Yes health benefits + social media campaign is a good idea. We need to make some social media accounts and start posting positive stuff. Perhaps we need a mascot.
  2. Yeah even with something advanced with actual IR lasers (like an actual "straight line" laser) and not the laser tag LEDs you still get a whole different set of issues... (some already mentioned) - You can get people cheating with multiple emitters with omnidirectional lens with 1000 RPS and infinite ammo and infinite range - Plus risks of eye damage, but the source is now invisible so you can't detect a risk before it is too late - Mirrors and reflective surfaces = infinite ricochet? - No sound when hitting covers and barricades, so you can't tell if you are getting pinned, and you can't suppress enemy with the same
  3. I was just comparing the XT's specs with Chihai's 2 brushless models and here are my findings: 1. Torque vs RPM is also a thing in brushless too, because Chihai's 39k has higher torque (starting torque per amp) than their 48k model by a rather large margin (say about 28% more) 2. Converting the numbers between N.m and kg/cm, XT's actually has a slightly higher torque than Chihai's 39k by about 6%, but of course the RPM is lower 3. Otherwise the spec looks pretty proportional to Chihai's 39k, nothing seems dramatically different 4. However Chihai is using UH grade magnets which I think is rated for 180 Celsius, compared to normal grade (?) of 80 Celsius, which should make it more reliable and stable in game, although this may be a moot point (if there is a mosfet there will be some current protection to prevent overheating in the first place) 5. Personal opinion, Chihai's toggle switch between two speed settings is much more fool proof than XT's fiddly method of switching
  4. We have shooting sports in Olympics, we have team sports in Olympics, there is really no reason why a gunfighting team sport cannot exist in Olympics, if it can be done safely, and fairly
  5. PPS This will be a new sport, there will be new ways to play, to dress, and to customise your airsoft, there will be newly designed airsoft fields that is more fun and accessible, it will develop its own aesthetics and culture (just as speedsoft did, but differently of course), and potentially an expanded hobby and market to the benefit of the entire industry and supply chain and ultimately more options, and fun, for the players
  6. Why the heck not, it is not milsim, it is not speedsoft, I guess in principle any clothing/equipments 1. should not impede hit detection and 2. should also be safe, so a suit might be appropriate, while a plate carrier is not because of excessive padding So there might be a "Goldilocks zone" of a clothing regime that is balanced between feedback (feeling hits) and safety (protection from welts), perhaps we will need experiments, we need a list of example clothing that you can reliably feel a hit through it but not get a bruise from it... we need some volunteers, some basic testing protocols, and some pen and paper... and a fashion designer to collaborate with PS In fact, we need to first decide the joule levels that is legal in most countries so we can have a realistic prospect of going international
  7. How about we talk about inventing a ruleset for new airsoft sport (Neosoft?): 1. A presentable version of airsoft that highlights sportsmanship and benefits of being the safest gun sport available 2. Long term goal to becoming an international sport federation recognised by IOC so we can have gunfighting Olympics
  8. @ak2m4 Winding count: I don't know how much exactly but I would imagine this is similarly balanced between torque and max RPM, what is the highest winding you can get for a say max 30k RPM? Because it seems to me 30k is high enough even for high ROF builds before you run into problem with other things not catching up Magnets: it seems Chihai is moving towards higher grades with higher temperature ratings which makes sense, so ideally you want highest grade with highest temperature rating, but I imagine this is only limited by cost. What are price differences of say N35/N52/N35H/N45SH/N45UH? Bearings: I think if you have an integrated CNC tower like what Chihai is doing, you can probably copy their three bearing config (like this), I don't imagine more bearings are automatically better and I think the three bearing might already be optimal Electronics/firmware: for airsoft it might actually be better to have a "dumb" motor that only has basic current limit, because of mosfet compatibility, I think the trend of putting more features into the motors might not be sustainable because there are only more and more ETUs in airsoft The bells and whistles would only make sense if people are using brushless without mosfet, but more often than not that is not the case To be "dumb" I mean 1. it needs to pass some current at rest so it is visible to the mosfet when plugged in (not sure about this) 2. work with lower range voltages because of voltage sag in airsoft batteries 3. able to work with reverse polarity 4. able to work with PWM input 5. able to work with 3+4 6. no startup delay, not sure how to achieve this, you want to keep the controller powered at rest so it doesn't need time to wake up, maybe with a capacitor as suggested 7. I don't really see the use case for speed control, if it is not using the maximum speed the magnet and winding can output maybe it has room to put in more winding for more torque, and if you have different speed models you can individually tweak this, and probably sell more (like Warhead), and arguably speed control should be something done at ETU level, the motor should be dumb and just let ETU do its job, the motor should just be responsible for spinning and IMO the electronic should mimic the behaviour of a brushed motor as much as possible
  9. Just wondering how much of customization can you do with your OEM, can you specify the firmware features and even how to implement the variable speed change? Maybe magnet types and winding counts and number and positions of bearings?
  10. (Just my rule of thumb) anything above 28 RPS is at risk of PME so will need short stroking You can calculate your paper ROF and see if it is over 28 e.g. say the 22 TPA is 25000 RPM, at 9.9 V this is 25000 x 9.9/11.1 = ~22300k 22300 / 60 / 18 = ~21 RPS so should be very safe in terms of PME This did not take into account efficiency loss which will make the number smaller
  11. cool project although it seems highly event specific maybe you can complete the "package" so fields can adopt this as a valid game mechanic if I understand correctly you just need some disposable RFID elements to scan and give out to players, and give this device to a medic, and you will have accurate counting of number of heals although, it seems the same function can be fulfilled by people simply remembering how many times they died, or watching a watch for countdowns and this "high tech solution" will require training and extra workload and budget and problems mainly from all the RFIDs you are giving out, they can be lost in-game etc
  12. If it is this same model then two beeps means voltage problem, it says operation voltage 6 to 14 V so it could very well be the battery cannot maintain 6 V, maybe the current was too much amps so the battery Vdrop in protest, maybe the gearbox was not shimmed well so there is extra resistance, maybe the spring and gear ratio combo represent too much torque requirement etc...
  13. I won't talk about UKAPU here I think in order to represent something you need to first have a clear definition of that something And airsoft is a very broad and nebulous cluster of activities generally revolving around "RIFs" and "skirmishing" as defined in law, but really there is no single way of playing or enjoying the hobby, in other words it is very open for interpretation, and my opinion is that this open nature is something quite quintessential at the core of airsoft, that there is a spirit of play and discovery and fun within what can perhaps be called a sandbox You can invent your own subset of airsoft (e.g. speedsoft) and make some official rules for it and call it speedsoft, or slowsoft if you prefer, but I don't think anyone can possible claim authority to define, hence represent, the bigger airsoft as a whole
  14. so they tried to help, it didn't help, but "let's post it on facebook anyway just to show we are doing something" lol how useless
  15. Ok I see, because even when it is connected to the wires, unless you are holding down the trigger in full auto, the wires are not powered, so I was wondering how does it even make the sound if it is not powered -- How accurate is the labelled 34k? If the 34k is close to 100% efficiency, 34000 / 60 / 18 = 31.48 RPS which is probably in the PME territory, if that is the case, the 20% reduction might be essential to get it down to ~25 RPS If it is 13:1 gears it is going to PME either way (again if it is close to 100% efficiency) Does this motor work with ROF reduction or AB? What exactly are the onboard features? Any torque curves or specs in numbers? Watching with interest -- PS nevermind I realised you need to hold down the toggle button first, and then press the trigger
  16. Watched your video about there is a button to toggle (?) the 20% reduced speed mode? Sounds like it is entirely digitally controlled so I wonder, does the button only work when plugged in and powered, and if so, how do people actually do this? XD Install in a pistol grip with the bottom lid open and try to set it in full auto with trigger held down? Sounds a bit risky if the user isn't pressing the button firmly it might grind the gears to dust?
  17. Never ever do any arguing in a field, always speak to the ref to sort it out
  18. If you like to fantasise about opening a field like me, you can take a look at r/airsoftfields where I dump my research and notes To find out your first gun you need to first find out: 1. your site and your play style, which might favour certain types or lengths, generally speaking shorter for CQB, longer for outdoor distances 2. your personal preference or aesthetic or ergonomic choices e.g. AR or AK or others To find out, you need to go rent a few games at your site, which is required to get your UKARA anyway
  19. Some video/pictures of the inside (doesn't seem very big) https://www.lcpproperties.co.uk/unit-details/3368/upper-floor https://www.novaloca.com/retail-premises/to-let/walsall/park-place-shopping-centre/72544 https://www.primelocation.com/to-rent/commercial/details/65779732/ Re how economical, since the place is already vacant, I guess for the owner (LCP) anything is better than nothing, on LCP's page it says flexible terms / short term let available so I guess First & Only (seems they run a lot of sites) managed to negotiate something Not sure how much they are even allowed to knock down, judging by the tone of the planning statement it seems they don't intent to alter anything "There would be no alterations either internally or externally to the premise as it is an ideal layout for the proposed use" I wonder with all those glass facade facing the high street (and skylights), how are they going to protect all the glass and how are they going to cover up all the RIFs from being seen, it seems it is a town centre location so there will be lots of random people walking about
  20. Watching with interest The actual application: https://planning.walsall.gov.uk/swift/apas/run/WPHAPPDETAIL.DisplayUrl?theApnID=23/1524 The proposed plan: https://planning.walsall.gov.uk/swift/MediaTemp/76733-421574.pdf The main level says 21,151 sq ft which is about 1965 m2, discounting safe zones etc it will be a bit smaller so it will be a Class S indoor site according to my classification table The linear central corridor with many shops branching from it is far from ideal from a good layout in terms of map design, you can imagine all the shop frontages will become camping spots and there will be a lot of these with no options for going around, it will be extremely challenging if not impossible to design a good map with this sort of layout
  21. I didn't know we had an official body. I thought we were an autonomous collective.
  22. Is having standards a good thing, yes But the thing is, airsoft retailers and field owners are not a regulated profession by any stature, the best anyone can do is come up with something similar to an ISO 9001 so any business can voluntarily adopt it, so they get an excuse to display a mostly decorative badge on their website You can't enforce it
  23. Any facebook group can sell patches and claim to be sending emails and monitoring google, but it takes UKAPU to be claiming they "preserve UK airsoft" by sending some claim forms for you and defend airsoft (what even does that mean) with patch sales. It will take a group of volunteers to begin to think about a new airsoft ruleset, but UKAPU is not it.
