Battery / cabling woes - any ideas?
RostokMcSpoons replied to RostokMcSpoons's topic in General Help
Is there any chance I've used bad solder? It's just the stuff I had in my tool box from years ago... Maplins lead free solder, Sn 99.3%, Cu 0.7% Hmmm.. I forgot to mention I put a Deans on the charger leads too, so if the solder(ing) is bad that would be why I can't get charge into the Titan now -
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Well I suppose it isn't unusual to find people have everything go wrong the day before their first game in 4 weeks, but this feels particularly galling. I've got my new Double Eagle M906C. I've been testing it out in the back garden and it's been running like a champ, I've put several hundred BBs through it now. I've got my Classic Army M16 and TM AK47 which, realistically, are going to be backup guns from now on. And I've got my new Titan 7.4V Li-Ion 3000 mAH battery that I received last week and which I used straight out of the packet - it had charge, and Li-Ions are supposed to hold charge for years, and can be run down to zilch without problem. Just plug it in and charge it up when it runs out. So I didn't charge it up any more, just plugged it - no problem. So I decided to re-wire my two old guns to Deans so I could slap in the Titan (which should have juice to easily run all day, as much of the combat is semi-auto). Particularly useful on the AK as getting all the cabling tucked away for the Li-Po was a pain. Now I'm not great at soldering, not had much practice and I've just got a basic soldering iron... but I watched the YT videos and understood exactly what I was trying to achieve. I got the fancy AMASS adapters with the plastic shroud rather than the cheap ones. Cut off the Tamiyas, tinned the wires, tinned the connectors, and joined 'em up - made sure the solder was kept reasonably small and tidy to avoid any short circuits... job done. Definitely got the +ve and -ve leads the right way around! And then I plugged in the Titan into the AK. Nada. Zilch. Nowt. Oh sod it, how did I mess that up? Connected the Titan to the M906. Still zilch. Ah, must be out of charge. Perhaps because I left it in the gun for the first time overnight. Charger won't charge it. (ASG Smart Charger, Life/Lipo (and therefore Li-Ion compatible), sold to me by Patrolbase) Keeps flashing the green light, won't go to steady red. Shizzle. Plug in one of those little LED displays I got from Amazon. At first I thought it showed nothing. But it actually was showing a very faint 'A'. Eventually after praying / plugging battery into charger in a cycle for a few times, the charger decided to show signs of life: Alternate flashing the primary power charger indicator, and flashing the 3S indicator. After an hour or so, I checked the Amazon monitor again. Ahah! Warning beeps and actual voltages shown. Plugged back into charger ... repeat. But after a long while I thought I'd try the Titan in a gun again. Still nothing. On the monitor I got *2* cells, one at 1.90v and the other at 2.04. The charger still shows 3S. So I seem to have a knackered Titan. The question is - has the gun knackered it somehow? When I plug in one of my old 8.4v1600mAH Nimh batteries the gun does the mosfet vibrate to show power, but sometimes it won't fire in semi auto, I need to shift it to full auto. Perhaps insufficient juice coming through? Jostling the cabling (which I haven't meddled with on this gun / battery, but includes a Deans to small Tamiya cable) can make the power vibration occur again. So perhaps a bad contact in the guns' cabling? Or has the mosfet thrown a wobbly? Connecting the (Tamiya > Deans adapter) Li-Po to the AK seems to work fine, so I'm leaning that way. But I've not had any problems with the M906 until today, running either the Titan or my Big Foot 7.4v Li-Po. I'm scunnered. Any thoughts?

The firehawk is amusingly loud, always gets my attention 😁 My site has a couple as rentals. They seem to be good though I've not managed to try one yet -
Good YouTube channels for reviews and tips etc
RostokMcSpoons replied to RostokMcSpoons's topic in General Discussion
That's an enormously impressive video, funny, and so in-depth. Awesome! it's a real shame they're still a young site and so there's not much content yet. But that's a "gold standard" for reviews on that GHK gun. Also - I want one. -
Yeah, simple upgrade - buy decent 0.28g BBs and play with it a for a couple of games before you do anything else - it's what I'm doing! The temptation to dive in straight off is strong (especially when I said about the spring and lube), but when I look back at my TM AK47S when I first started airsofting, I had a great few games with that before I got the spring upgraded and a tight barrel fitted (and stuck a big heavy battery on it, weighed it down with a top rail and sight). Having said that.. it seems changing the hop rubber and nub is easy, other people here will recommend you some options. Accuracy seems decent out-of-the-box though, and my hop lifts 0.30's already. I'll be interested to see what the improvement will be with those changed out.

I've been spending a bit too much time on YouTube searching for reviews of the guns I've been considering buying, and there are some damned good people out there. And some very under-appreciated / under-subscribed channels that I think deserve a wider audience. So here are a few links from my subs list: First up is Rock Bottom airsoft. A mix of reviews, tech help and gameplay. All well made. Only possible criticism is he might ramble a bit at times, and does re-iterate his points (in the time honoured presentation skills fashion) but he seems to come up with intelligent and useful stuff rather than click-baity rubbish. How he's only got 350 subs is a damning indictment of how unfair YouTubery is. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvkpk2EJr2mA70qoR9qBBYA/featured Then there's this Polish chap, Maniek44 who provided an excellent review of the gun I ended up buying (well, a model up the range, but basically the same), so he gets his name in lights for doing me a big favour with one video https://www.youtube.com/c/Maniek44Eng/featured And there's Pheas Airsoft with good reviews and also upgrade how-to's and tests. https://www.youtube.com/c/PheasAirsoft Ooh la la! Oioi Airsoft One of them Frenchies who can speak Anglais? Don't mind if you don't but I do - he's good at reviewing stuff https://www.youtube.com/c/Oioiairsoft Fans of the L85 will no doubt already worship at the altar of English Kiwi https://www.youtube.com/c/EnglishKiwi There's the usual suspects... new airsofters might not know of these yet... some of them are rather Marmite, but y'know "any port in a storm" sometimes they have content you just can't get anywhere else. Hi Jake Short version: You'll love it There's a good forum thread in the Reviews section which has switched into a sort-of owners tricks and tips and pics thread. If you want reassurance you've bought a good gun - that's easy - there doesn't seem to be a bad word said yet. (Well maybe note that the spring tends to lose some of its strength over a short-ish period of time, and piston might need a lubing. But given the quick change spring ability, and access to the piston is relatively simple, don't be scared by those things) All the Double Eagle M90x guns share the same internals. The 904's have polymer receivers, the 906's are metal, the 907's are milled metal, and the 908 has the fancy handguard and the PTS EPS style stock that maybe I should've paid the extra for 😏 So anything said about any of the guns will most likely apply to yours too There is a decent video review of the 908 on YT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZkN0fqfkvw and a good in-depth of the cheaper / lighter 904 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU_vnyRCLj4&ab_channel=Maniek44_Eng And a nice web site review here Double Eagle M904G / WMASG.com - Airsoft binds us!

Double Eagle M904g – Aka the Original Q Honey Badger
RostokMcSpoons replied to mightyjebus's topic in AEG/GBBR Reviews
I've got some fairly standard 'Silverhook SGPGT90' silicon grease I got from a DIY store, is that good enough or do I need to get some specialist stuff in there? (Any recommendation if so?) -
Ah, I fixed the wobble with a velcro sticky pad inside the mag well on mine, but I guess if you have a mix of mag manufacturers then each one could need a different amount of packing. I'm the sort of guy who frets about camouflage, so I won't be sticking bright colours on my mags anytime soon. But perhaps a bit of light grey electrician's tape I have will do the trick. It's a bit silly of me really, all my other kits is a real mish-mash of black / black camo / olive / S95 DPM / multi cam. Probably not very effective! And then someone sticks a big bit of yellow or blue tape on my arm as well, and I'm worrying about my mags
-
Silly question perhaps... when people are selling gear or showing off loadouts, I see a lot of magazines with tape around them in 'non-Tactical' colours... Is that just for ease of identification so you can spot yours if someone else picks one up? Or is to more easily spot them if they're on the ground? Should I be doing it too? (yub yub, fnarrr fnarrr) How often does it actually help???

The 'What have you just bought' Thread
RostokMcSpoons replied to Cameron364's topic in Guns, Gear & Loadouts
Well after yesterday's travails, I have to give UPS (grudging) respect for delivering my parcel on time, ringing the dell bell and knocking on the door nice and loud. So although he didn't wait for me to open the door before sodding off in a cloud of dust, it arrived safe and sound One FMA Short Vertical Grip installed, after a bit of futzing... the m-lok bolt was too short so I had to countersink the hole from inside the grip to give it the necessary wriggle room. But damn, it's nice! Just what I wanted. A bargain at £8, it gives me true BF4 vibes! and my Titan 7.4V 3000mAH Li-Ion stick battery fits perfectly in the stock... No perceived difference in either trigger response or RoF from my 7.4v 1500mAH Big Foot 25c Li-Po. A couple of bags of Longbow 0.28g bio bb's complete today's haul from Airsoft Anonymous. These seem quite highly rated from a couple of reviews I've read, and reasonably priced at £12 per 3000. -

Cool gun 👍 Can I ask a couple of questions? I've seen a couple of reviews meeting that the gearbox doesn't seem to have much lube in it, when it's fresh out of the box. Did you find that, and if so was it bad enough that I should get mine cracked open and lubed as a priority? Also, what FPS did you get before the spring change? I'm going to get mine chrono'd on Sunday for the first time, I imagine it's going to be comfortably under the limit, but I wouldn't want any surprises! -
The 'How Did Your Airsoft Day Go? Thread
RostokMcSpoons replied to Skara's topic in General Discussion
My airsoft day has been shit. UPS delivered me a couple of bags of BBs, a new foregrip, and a Titan battery. But didn't bother themselves ringing our loud doorbell, just left it out front instead. So some thieving git nicked it all. Arse. Edit:. Blimey. AirsoftAnonymous sent me an email at 9pm (which I've only just read) to let me know UPS made a bollox of their status updates, so it's not actually been delivered and then nicked after all! Huzzah! So it's now a good day 🤗 -

I'm mid 50's, still playing football three times a week with a mix of ages. After gaps due to injury or Covid lockdowns I've come back to games struggling for fitness (and breath), wanting to try out that "walking football" malarkey (I hasten to add that extreme response wasn't actually required! Fitness returns after a few games) As for 'duty of care', well I could quite easily suffer a heart attack on the pitch and that'd be it. I accept that risk, and it seems the council (who runs one set of the pitches I play on) are the same. The benefits outweigh the risks. They have an on-site defibrillator, which is great, but never prohibit people from playing. Airsoft isn't quite as hard work as football, so I think the bar for protecting us oldies from ourselves can be a fair bit lower. (Or is it higher?) I'm more worried about twisting my ankle. Luckily we have a stretcher used in one of the 'rescue the pilot' games at SpecialOps, so it's there if I need it

Are the dust cover caps on scope turrets a standard size? Are they available for sale anywhere? I need some replacements for an old Viking air rifle scope, the thread is 22.4mm diameter, if I measured it right.
-
https://www.ant-supplies.uk/ I bought some 20mm / 1" scope rings from here for the princely sum of £6 I bought an M4 armourers tool for £6 as well The main thing is not so much the cheap scope rings, it's the fact they do loads of bits and pieces, but don't charge for the p&p. So if you want something small and cheap you won't get bombed with a £5 courier fee on top. They do general shooting / hunting stuff, so there's not a whole lot of specific Airsoft kit in there, but it is worth a poke around if you want a hat or a sling, or survival kit. Edit... Flip up optics lens shield for £6

The 'What have you just bought' Thread
RostokMcSpoons replied to Cameron364's topic in Guns, Gear & Loadouts
A few little bits and pieces have turned up in the last couple of days... The sling was from Action Hobbies' bargain bin. Bought on a whim, it's pretty good. It'll get replaced by a QD 2-point sling eventually. The scope mounts are a bargain from Ant Supplies. Delivered very quickly, free p&p. I decided these mounts are too low, so I straight away ordered some extra tall ones, £6.50 (I've got a decent red-dot, but fancied using that old 4x32 scope I've had since I was a kid, to see how it plays) The M4 tool came from Ant Supplies too. Thought it'd be useful to have when I'm futzing around with my old CA M15. The Kombat UK holster is pretty decent for a cheapo. At least if fits on my Molle properly, unlike the belt loop one I had before that I had to lash in place with paracord. The BB Pouch was also bought on a whim... it'll be useful if I keep running hi-caps, perhaps even more so if I go ahead with buying mid-caps. And last, and perhaps least, the Project Airsoft stubby grip. Hmmm... 3D-printed rather than moulded, not what I really expected. It fits fine, but just looks cheap close-up. The grey grip tape is so fierce it can do double duty as a sanding block, but I guess it'll grip into my gloves (and perhaps shred them). The best thing about is - I'm now sure I want a vertical grip on my gun - so I'll go and buy this one from Airsoft Anonymous I got a couple more bits from Project Airsoft that aren't in the pic (as they're small and wouldn't show) - a high-cap mini funnel device, and a M92 gas mag 'thumb saver'. The funnel will work, but I'll probably lose it. The M92 doesn't fit my M9 mag (but probably will with some filing)... and I'll probably lose that too! -
Can you put an AK Stick Battery in a buffer tube?
RostokMcSpoons replied to LzChase's topic in Electric Guns
That's good info, thankfully for taking the time to do that research... but I'm currently just running a simple collapsible stock with no capacity beyond the stock tube itself. So I'm very restricted in my choice, unless I spring for a replacement stock (so that's £50 for the PTS EPS most likely) I do have one 7.4v 1500 mAh 20c Bigfoot lipo for it already, which runs fine. (Hey, it seems we've sort of circled back to the OP's original question 🤣) I do have an A1 stock on my classic army M15. If the fitments are standard, I could swap that over... Are they? It would look a little clunky on my new gun though. But I also want to share the battery with my Ak47s which only has the top cover storage.. back to square one -
Can you put an AK Stick Battery in a buffer tube?
RostokMcSpoons replied to LzChase's topic in Electric Guns
Thanks Iceni. There's a lot to unpack there, especially for a non-technical battery user like me. What I can take away from that is that Titanpower have certainly been economical with their batteries if not the truth in the past. What I'm not sure about so much is whether the the 3000mAH that was tested was the earlier model. The 2700mAH one certainly isn't available any more from them. All current models are 3000+ Well, regardless of all that, one 3000mAH Li-Ion is still only the same price as 2 x 1500mAH Li-Po sticks, takes up less space, and won't worry me about charging / discharging like a Li-Po would. And my gun is stock, so I'm not going to be over-stressing it. I'll still be buying one. And I'll let the forum know if it goes horribly wrong. -
TM Hi Capa 5.1 or 4.3 vs Army Armaments R5/600s
RostokMcSpoons replied to RostokMcSpoons's topic in Guns, Gear & Loadouts
I watched a cool video review of the TM USP (with the new 15mm BBU) at lunchtime. Wow, that thing's got some range + accuracy! Are all the TM's like that? I do prefer the look of the M45A1, but the same guy reviewed that (and liked it) but pointed out the USP is insanely efficient with gas. I don't suppose that really makes any difference, especially if I'm only carrying one spare mag...? -
TM Hi Capa 5.1 or 4.3 vs Army Armaments R5/600s
RostokMcSpoons replied to RostokMcSpoons's topic in Guns, Gear & Loadouts
I just ordered a universal Molle holster (Kombat UK) so I can run with the M9 for a bit, see how much I actually use it. And then when I can (afford it) I'll grab a Hi Capa. At that point I might swap the cordura holster for a plastic retention style one too. Quick story... I had one great game where my main gun ran out of battery. I was defending in a game of zombies, down to about 4 or 5 survivors versus a swarm of zombies running down a wooded hill at us. Pinging shots from the M9 at unsuspecting enemies was just sooooo satisfying. The adrenaline rush of being swarmed, the lack of ammo, the feel of the blowback on the gun, all just made it really exciting. I probably only got a couple of kills, as the over-hop meant my long range shots were all over the place (I was still using 0.20s at the time) but damn I enjoyed that. So yeah, I'll want to use my pistol, and I'd rather it be realistic/dramatic (sort-of rules out the AAP-01 and also the non-GBB guns) at the expense of practicality. Which was I why I was initially drawn to the Army Armament guns with their metal slides. -
Email sent! Thanks Next question for you lovely people with a stock DE 904/6 ... what weight BB's are you using? I seemed to be ok with the 0.30s, I burned through a bag of Geoff's a bit too rapidly when I was on the range last weekend... but they're a bit expensive, and I didn't get a chance to chrono to see if the hop was excessive and knocking the velocity down too much. (It seemed ok) So I'll probably step down to .28 or .25. I think my TM AK is back down at 280fps now, I need to have the option of sharing the ammo. I think .30's are too much for that. (I didn't test it though, too busy with the DE!) There are some bargain (bin) prices for 0.25s, like 5100 rounds of Lancer Tactical Bio's on eBay at £16 with free delivery... a quick google for reviews suggest they're fine. What do you run with?
-
I really ought to wait for the one I've ordered to turn up to try it out, but I found this one.... https://www.airsoftanonymous.co.uk/products/copy-of-fma-short-vertical-grip-for-m-lock-sys-bk It's £8 and it looks just like the stubby grip on Battlefield 4, which I use on all my guns in that game. I don't think I can resist having it 😁🥴😄 (I'm also really tempted to get an F2000 one day as I've racked up 45,000 in-game kills with that) Stevobeavo,. Where did you get those Ares mags from? I do really like the look of them, but can't find any stock in the normal retailers... My alternative is the Lonex 200rd mids, fire support have got those in stock still.
-
Those have the built-in Magpul things, don't they? I thought they looked very smart when I saw them - do you actually use them though? Very reasonably priced for sure... I'm struggling to find stock outside of Amazon though (where they are £20 each!) By the way how are you finding that angled grip? I've got a stubby vertical grip on the way £10 from Project Airsoft https://projectairsoft.co.uk/products/vertical-foregrip-m-lok-and-keymod?_pos=1&_sid=2721e922a&_ss=r But I'm looking at the slightly angled stubby grips, the short broom handle style, and the angled grips like yours... fairly unsure which I'll finally prefer. Where did you get that one from - all the angled grips I've seen are just for RIS, or are the skeleton style metal which I don't like so much
