  1. I have pretty much always just rocked up to a site on my own since the beginnig. I just set myself up somewhere and then talk to the people around me, as a result I know quite a lot of people in the sites I play at nowadays. None of my friends have the remote interest in anything airsoft related other than the one guy I met on these forums. Just go and more likely than not you'll meet a load of more experienced players who are also super friendly and have you join their group for the day. You would have thought that this strategy would have failed at least once in the 50 or so games I have played, but it never has!
  2. I should have mentioned I now use contacts, they just don't fog so end up being vastly superior for sports.
  3. I am a glasses wearer and I went through the same issues 1.5 years ago. I tried inserts into a set of Bolle Raiders and that was unusable due to fogging. Then I went to a pair of Desert Locusts with a fan and they were better but the glazed insert still fogged. I think it all really depends how you sweat, I sweat ridiculous amounts when hot so I tend to overpower most anti fog solutions and glazed inserts apparently makes it worse. I was also unlucky enough to have a fragment come through my mesh and tap me next to my eye on the very first game, put me off mesh for life.
  4. I have heard that Krytac is intending to annouce a DMR prebuilt model for next year. I don't know which rifle they are intending to base it on but they are intending to make it locked to semi and such which will be a nice base for building a decent DMR out of in the future.
  5. I have done 2 okto games now (2nd in command in the last game) and I think in terms of gear and how you organise yourself these are the ways I do it. MDF have a forward operating base and you are goiing to want to leave a bag here. It should contain lunch, extra water, BBs, loader, spare smoke and flash grenades and any spare stuff you might need through the day like extra clothing. On your person you will want your mags, water (at least 1L), snack food, grenades (1 smoke, 1 flash) and your baofeng radio (we use VHF and UHF) with a headset. I also have some spare eye pro and cleaning kit to deal with fogging which does happen occasionally in 8 hours even with my turbo fan. Most of the guys in these games are actually using ballistic glasses not goggles. I wouldn't bother with a pistol on this site, there is only one place I would have appreciated having one and its just weight and awkwardness you don't need. I think its also worth mentioning that the site that will be used in December does not have any water pipes on it so water is a major concern for the weekend. If you are coming in a car bring water to last the weekend, its a lot of water. The MDF tend to be the first guys ready on a morning and they often insert into the zone on time as well (unlike the rebels who last time were like 2 hours late!) so we go out on patrol and search the terrain and other things before the game has fully started. So make sure you know how your kit goes together, you have tested it all works and set your radio up before you arrive and know how to use it. Other gear you might want for the evenings and such which perhaps some wouldn't consider is things like a flashlight and batteries, food for the evening (although Saturday night MDF has a history of going to the pub or chinese takeout). I don't know who is in charge next game, not sure if Pete is back or if I'll attend but your commander may want certain things (a watch). Its a great game, sometimes its standing there with your eyes on the woods watching for movement in a defensive position and other times its all out deadly chaos and everything in between. The radio comms, the story and everything comes together to make it feel very real sometimes. I love the games and I love the comms/command/coordination aspect of these types of milsims.
  6. This is Hunterseeker5, he makes the R hop patches amoung other things (like special clips for gearbox maintenance, better feeders for magazines that don't jam and lapping kits to improve barrels even PDI). The guy knows his stuff and he tests it as well which is the key point. His videos often ramble on for ever and they seem to elude to things he has done which aren't on the channel and I for the life of me can't find the things he eludes to on places like airsoftmechanics. Regardless he is one of the most respected airsoft inventors and mechanics out there.
  7. I have bought some of this magic Bob heath anti fog so I will test it within my revision locusts like I have all the others I reviewed. I suspect it'll probably come somewhere in the middle, I am not expecting miracles but for £8 I'll try almost anything as the revision anti fog wipes get expensive rapidly (as do the fogtech ones) and I would very much like a cheaper and comparable solution.
  8. Revision locusts with a turbofan, then import their thermal lens as well. It is much better than the ess solution because it doesn't block the vertical vision so you can look down at your gear. Best turbofan solution I know of. But keep in mind I could not get glasses to work, I glazed the insert with polycarbonate with anti fog coating and I still had problems with the inner glass fogging with the fan going on max. So while I rated the locusts very highly I have personally gone for contacts as the glasses insert has not worked for me at all.
  9. A bang is a bang. I find as cheap as possible and as easy to load as possible is far more important than it being loud. In airsoft noise only has disadvantages. Its not like the people hit by it wont notice even with just a shotgun cap in there, they absolutely will.
  10. I use an MS2 which I more or less happy with. Its a 2 point adjustable sling and it can also clip and become a one point if you need that. My main complaint is with the quick detach at the rear as it has a tendency to get caught on my tar 21 and come undone. Its also a bit too thin and ends up digging into the shoulders after a day of solid use but the benefit with the easy adjust 2 point and the clip to 1 point are really good useful features.
  11. Nothing makes you miserable more than being cold and wet. There is a reason so few troops make it through to the SEALs and I suspect most of it is spending days on end wet and borderline hypothermic and still having to perform. For airsoft its just not worth it! I don't like booking winter games much in advance for that reason, I like to know what the weather is going to be so I can avoid the rain, because a whole day out in the wet is extremely hard to stay dry and still get a decent game. To do it well is going to require waterproof trousers, jacket and combined hood so that there isn't a lot of places the water can get in. Of course then you will have issues with chest rigs and general carry wear. Its doable its just not my thing, I hate cold and wet. Warm and wet was kind of nice at Okto, I actually felt cool for the first time all weekend and gave me a performance boost as a result.
  12. You can buy an air rifle/pistol or a crossbow/bow so long as your 18, all of which can be lethal to a human being and look like a real weapon. You can get a paintball "marker" that looks remarkably like an M4 again if you are over 18. An airsoft IF (a toy) can be bought so long as your 18 and a RIF only with suitable defence proving you play the sport of airsoft. I can't personally reconcile why its OK for a paintball gun to be easy to get but an airsoft one isn't. But what this law teaches me is its not about the danger the weapon poses, its what it looks like.
  13. I avoid the actual rain. Last winter I did play quite a few games below 0 and used under armour t shirt, t shirts, camo tops and a soft shll jacket. I used hicaps and full finger gloves and stayed warm enough but carried extra layers as well.
  14. For typical UK weather and FPS limits (350) the softer buckings do well and two you will hear a lot are the Prometheus Purple and the G&G green. Now if you want the best hop up rubber you can get then you'll want to R hop it, but its a fair bit of work and you may find just flat hopping a Purple will get you good effects.
  15. I use a shortdot, its 1x-4x adjustable scope. It kind of gives me the best of both worlds for close up combat with the 1x and for the extent of the range firing or spotting with the 4x. Being able to see where you BBs are precisely going at long range is quite important especially in the wind. But I use 1x just as much as I use 4x even in the woodland, I wouldn't want to be without the 1x.
  16. Different carry systems have different philosophies of use. A plate carrier is based on standing/kneeling keeping the waist and legs mostly clear for the purpose of moving well and standing square on to the enemy so that getting hit is absorbed by the plate. The UK tends to prefer laying on the ground as part of making people harder to hit and as a result tends to put all the equipment on the sides and rear of the waist and back such that they can get low to the ground. So what you use (plate, chest rig, battle belt, assault vest) all changes your combat style and to some extent you have to use it somewhat in the way it was designed otherwise you are going to have problems with it. If you spend a lot of time laying on the ground in games then you may find stuff on your front with a plate/chest rig doesn't suit you and you might find a battle belt or side/rear assault vest is more appropriate for you.
  17. I even fire it sometimes. If I am forced to hold someone elses gun sometimes the enemy pops up and its their darn gun that is in my hands so I shoot it. I find out a lot of people don't bother to zero their sights!!!
  18. You tell the shop. Then if they don't update it you take them to court for breach of the data protection act requirement to keep accurate records. Make sure to give them a letter before notice explaining what they are required to do one month before starting a court claim. Some companies just need a legal jolt to do what in law they are required to do.
  19. The ATP is theoretical. The basics of range estimates were tested empiracally but the speed drop off wasn't. Based on the model it would look like the ATP overestimates the speed loss somewhat but still this is the first empircal test I have seen that validates that part of the ATP, the original author of ATP certainly doesn't mention testing that aspect of it.
  20. Nowadays using 0.30g BBs I don't often find many people wanting to take a mag from me, but I always offer. The cost of 300 BBs is just nothing compared to everything else this money pit of a hobby costs me so being a nice doesn't cost me anything. In a year I have perhaps given away £6 worh of BBs total, but in the process I have made about 10 people happy and some of them have turned out to be team mates I play with a lot. Its just another ice breaker. I do view there beingn a difference between in game and in the safe zone, in the safe zone there ought to be somewhere to buy some so its kind of cheeky to be asking mags to be filled by others, but I have given BBs for the purpose of testing feeding and magazines and guns before, in practice its just not a lot of money in the end. I understand those doing this on a tight budget might not want to give up BBs, I am not going to hold it against them but from my own experience I have found it beneficial to hand out mags like they were free. Haven't had anyone fail to bring the mag back.
  21. Many of us know that the a typical site will use 350fps with no minimum engagement distance but a 420 fps DMR and 500 fps bolt action with a minimum of 30metres. Well today I saw a video that might change that: It was mainly about testing what a gopro can stand in terms of impact but he goes on to test a 420 fps rifle at about 30 feet (10metres). The end result was that 420 fps had dropped to more like 305 fps in that short distance with 0.20g BBs. I would like to see some other people attempt this experiment with perhaps some different weight BBs but with the intent of determining in reality what the drop off actually is. Because there is a decent chance that our current MEDs for sites is way above what they need to be in reality to avoid serious injuries.
  22. Just having the plate carrier is going to stop you feeling the hits, its going to always be about hearing them once you go that route.
  23. Trying to make this into a DMR has turned into a real pile of pain. I'll ask Krytac than, although I don't see how knowing if this happened or not helps me really at this point, I still have a weapon I can't open and I need to.
  24. I have the buffer screw stuck in a Krytac SPR (M4 basically). I need to get this darn screw out and presumable replace it. I think it may be glued in there so its not willing to come out. I have put so much force on it with a philips screwdriver the metal has started to strip so I think my chance of getting the screw out are all but done. At this point I would often get the dremel out and put a slit in it and use a big flat head screw driver and a wrench and just twist it out but I can't get into the buffer tube with a dremel. So what I am looking for is some other ideas about: 1. How to get this screw out without damaging anything else (gearbox, buffer tube, upper receiver) 2. Where to get a replacement screw, anyone know what size and such these screws are because by the time I get this out I most likely wont be able to tell Any ideas?
  25. The Nuprol 886 is basically a 556 holo sight, its a shorter and smaller person with horizontal batteries but its otherwise identical to the 551 that I see a lot of people using. The sight itself comes with a red dot and circle around it as you would expect from a red dot holo sight. It wasn't a problem zeroing it. But I had two issues with the sight that were quite apparent at Okto and my friend who spent much of the weekend using it complained about them both as well. 1) The sight picture/glass is quite dark. Its noticeably grey/brown compared to the background and once you get into the woodland it becomes prohibitively so. This is likely everyones main fear when buying a sight and I can confirm that Nuprol sights have this issue based on what I have seen. 2) The front glass of the sight gave off a strong reflection that got my friend spotted and killed when hiding in the undergrowth. Thus unfortunately like so many of the replica sights this one has a strong darkened glass and highly reflective surface that gives you away. Don't recommend the sight, for half the price a G&P aimpoint has considerably clearer glass than this and is preferred to the holo.
