The 'always assume it's loaded even if it's not' crap is essentially saying that you've not effectively cleared your gun, or you don't trust yourself sufficiently to trust your own eyes to yourself. Certainly, the whole 'trigger discipline' thing has it's time and place, when stacking up on a door with real firearms for example it's probably pretty damn important that you don't shoot your mate in the back. But by and large, very very few british airsofters are ever going to need to do that and so 'treat it like it's real' is really kinda pretentious and a bit sad. That said, like Samurai I don't take my eyepro off even in the safe zone. abbey 144a is not green gas no, however, you should still be getting more than 200fps with it, even when it's freezing cold! my advice is to take it down to the store and have them chrono it there, will be irrefutable evidence that you're not just doing it wrong.

as a follow up to this, I'm now in contact with Andy regarding getting a set of inserts (didn't end up sending an email in January!). How do you find the prescription lenses for fogging up Del monty? I'm a little worried that my sweaty face will cause the lenses to fog up while the eyeshield itself remains clear!

In order for a mosfet to be able to completely eliminate semi lock ups in a V2 gearbox it needs to monitor the position of the sector gear, BTC Spectre or Chimera drop in units will do it but they're nearly the cost of a combat machine! Personally I'd upgrade the wiring, get a cheaper mosfet like a gate pico or nano ab, put a high torque motor in there and use 11.1v batteries, should solve your semi auto lock up problem :-)

Also, if you really must improve the FPS of a TM recoil chuck a good 6.03 tightbore and a bearing spring guide in and it'll bump you to 330 ish on average.

You're making a lot of assumptions, FPS as you've stated isn't everything and the miracle barrel is just a tightbore with a little platform for the BB to sit on. No test so far has proved that they're actually any better than a standard barrel.

just to add to that though, there's no reason why you NEED to upgrade any of those things, in my experience it's very difficult to upgrade the hop-up on a marui gun... not because it's a hard part to replace, but because it's a hard part to improve upon. Stock barrel likewise is very very good and in order to get a true 'upgrade' you're looking at a prometheus barrel... v expensive! The stock gears are more than strong enough to pull back the stock spring for ever without failure, my old marui M4 ran for 10 years with zero maintenance and is probably still going fine now. If you want to upgrade the spring to squeeze more FPS out of one, then you might as well change the gears while you've got the gearbox open but otherwise just leave it!

yeah, if you're getting decent performance now (sounds like you are!) why spend money to potentially bugger it up? If it aint broke... don't fix it!

some would argue that having to attend 3 games in not less than 2 months, not more than 12 months all at the same UKARA registered site counts as jumping through at least one hoop. I know I do, it's not a difficult thing to do but it IS a ball ache.

if it's kicking out 160fps on abbey 144a there's something wrong with it, should be 240-260.
