  1. Obligatory vote for the Double Eagle M906C... Though of course the 904 with polymer body would save some weight if it's not a "strapping teenager" we're talking about here. (One of the guys at spec ops has picked up a 904 and hpa'd it. It's a fly-weight beast) G36s are cool though... So for the cheaper end of the price range it's a great choice
  2. @Ajaxiasty I just bought a 60 yellow Autobot off Amazon (country sports) for £11. Did you change the nub too?
  3. Zapped a spammer yesterday, and another this morning "Pleasing" 😁
  4. The 'lube in gas' thing does seem a bit odd... _No oil_ Abbey Brut Sniper _Some oil_ Ultrair Abbey Predator etc Nuprol 1.0/2.0/3.0 etc ... And pretty much everything else too? _Lots of oil_ Abbey Maintenance 144a I've always used the Nuprol or Abbey Predator in my pistol mags, to keep the seals lubed, because that seems to be 'the done thing' But when I bought my GBBR the advice seems to be go for 'dry' gas, so the hop rubber doesn't get oil on it which will impact range and accuracy. (And indeed thinking about my rifle not seeming to perform as well yesterday, compared to the previous skirmish, I wonder if the fact I've used maintenance gas in the two new mags in an attempt to fix leaks had indeed coated the hop rubber to cause the inconsistencies I saw) Well, pistols have hop too, so is it just the inherent inaccuracy of pistols that makes the trade-off of more reliable mags Vs poorer performance from the hop more acceptable?
  5. Dan, if we're both at spec ops next week I'll lend you my old pair of Ess goggles. I didn't fog up at all yesterday in spite of getting hot and sweaty. See how you get on with them I know someone else has said they wouldn't use them because of the gaps at the ventilation holes, but looking at people wearing glasses yesterday I was struck by how poorly many of them fit to the face, so it seems an odd thing to worry about on my goggles. (The holes aren't big enough to let a BB through)
  6. I'm in the process of catching up with this propane lark. Quick answer please, are the savings really worth the effort of not buying cans of Ultrair (without lube, but which are available on-site for £10-12?), Or Abbey Predator (which has some lube included, if you're so inclined.... Matron 🤡)
  7. Another day out at Spec Ops, running the '416 for most of the day. I didn't seem to get many kills for much of the morning. I'd tuned the hop at the start of the day, but it seems even with help of my LPVO I still can't spot when my BB's start to go awry... And awry they were - mostly over-hopping when I prefer a flat-flat-drop trajectory (as I find it easier to compensate when I'm running out of range for a long shot) The hop adjuster doesn't seem to have crept around, so the problem is internal, I guess. Edit: Problem may also be related to having silicone oil on the hop rubber, firstly from the Abbey Maintenance gas I used to try to cure the leaking mags, and secondly from the Ultrair I used, which I thought was 'dry'... but isn't! Looks like it's time to try a new hop rubber, and check the hop unit and nub. If that doesn't help (and it probably won't stop the creep) I might well spring for that fancy hop unit and barrel combo. I also did an accuracy test and range test against my stalwart Double Eagle 906. 0.40g Geoff's BB's in the VFC, 0.28g War heads in the DE Both were hitting a narrower than torso width tree trunk at 45 long paces (I'll measure my long paces with a tape tomorrow edit: 1 long pace slightly longer than 1m) about 50-60% of the time once the hop was set correctly on the VFC. Looked like there was still a fair bit of range left in both guns past that target. Which was nice.
  8. That sounds promising, let's organise Scarlett first, we'll get on to the gnus later! 😄😁
  9. I have a made a bit of a boo-boo. Given this is some minor league tech'ing, it's amazing how easily I've managed to bugger it up - I now need some help, please! I was intent on trying to tighten my stock nut, but I thought I'd also straighten the little spring under the sling plate at the same time. So I loosened off the nut, and fixed the spring. Great stuff. The problem is I've loosened off the buffer tube and it won't screw in. It also won't unscrew completely off. I can't fully cock the gun, because the tube is almost off. And I can't pull the trigger to release the bolt from it's partial cocking. Most worryingly of all I now can't open the upper receiver because of the bolt / recoil buffer position, so my options to 'get to things' is now enormously limited. I basically seem to have tied the thing into a Gordian knot of interlocking bits that are in the wrong position. How do I sort it? Edit: Well thankfully the buffer tube has unscrewed, it was very 'sticky' at certain points in the rotation, but a bit of extra force got it all the way undone. So the recoil buffer and spring are now out, but the bolt carrier(?) won't go all the way in to let me open the upper receiver. I think I can figure that bit out now, hopefully! Edit2: Now I've managed to get the buffer screwed back into place, but I've stupidly pushed the sprung pin from the receiver down, so the tube could screw in. But should that still be up, to retain the buffer and spring? The tube is now screwed in too far to close the receiver, and it won't budge either way beyond a few degrees of rotation. I think the tip of the pin broke against the thread, and it's now wedging it (pic below was taken from a disassembly video I should've watched first - it shows the pin in its normal location) I guess that particular part isn't crucial and I don't think I have much choice but to brute force the tube to unwind a couple of turns, so the whole thing will re-assemble. Is there a better approach? Edit3: :Phew: All back together and working again. The pin that retains the recoil buffer wasn't broken. I pushed the pin holder (which I could still get to) down a bit more and that allowed me to unscrew the tube. I had a concern that the receiver still wouldn't close, but backing the tube out one more turn from its apparent natural / best location (where the pin fitted directly into a relief notch) did the trick. I have learned how the springs, pins and tubes all work together, but I think I'll leave well alone for the moment. And I'll leave this post as a testimony to how even a stock tube has enough components to trip up an idiot ;D Here's a link to the video that I got the pic from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BautCSmpOmk
  10. I feel it's important we cut out all the middlemen (those pesky retailers), and the waiting for my next pay day (whenever that might be), and you should just bring them both round to my house so I can extensively test them. For the next 10 or 12 years perhaps?
  11. Now the VFC HK416 had cemented its place as my favourite toy, and I have reasonably high hopes of being gainfully employed again in the near future, my thoughts turn inevitably to how I can metaphorically piss my first new bit of dosh up the wall... My current list of candidates vary from "small, compact and relatively cheap"... To "long and unwieldy and stupidly expensive" VFC or TM MP7 Available new or used at sensible prices, would make a very good CQB companion to my 416. I do really like the MP7 platform, used it quite a bit in the Battlefield 4 game. VFC SIG Rattler New, looks good, no clue about long term reliability, obviously. Could potentially share magazines with my 416 (the V3 Stanag style. Have heard those mags have got 'issues' though) VFC HK53 Scratches my long term MP5 itch with the added benefit of the AR style mags fitting in my existing pouches. Looks awesome VFC MP5 ... the same with the downside of need a new rig to carry the pouches... But could source this gun 'used' to fund that. VFC LAR (FAL) OH GOOD LORD GIVE ME THIS GUN NOW Sorry, what I meant to say was - Ideally I'd like a proper SLR replica, but it looks fantastic even so. I fired the SLR as a cadet and loved it. Gives me a fizz in my loins VFC G3 I like long battle rifles it seems, must be compensating for something... TM MWS Probably the sensible option in terms of long term reliability, best performance of of the box...? Best performance once the autumn sets in, I'm sure. I'd probably go for the CQB version... Need to research further. TM AKX I have too many M4 style guns, this would perhaps be the sensible alternative to the MWS just for that reason. I do love a good AK, and given this will let me mount an optic easily, it has extra appeal WE L85 The other gun I have a life-long fascination with is the SA80, right back to when it was still in 4.85mm calibre (and looked very svelte as the XL60). I know very little about this particular model as yet, not done my due diligence, it might be a load of shite 😋 Open to thoughts on all these, and suggestions for others, as this is very much the beginning of my GBBR journey. I know zilch about other manufacturers tbh!
  12. Nope, not got an issue with anything rattling, just with two parts of my gun wanting to disassociate themselves from the rest of the gnu: The stock nut, as previously mentioned. I've not yet stuck the gun in a vice to brutally torque that in to place, but I will as... The outer barrel is also happy to unwind itself.. usually when I'm taking the suppressor off (it looks cool, but sometimes a short barrel is much more effective at using cover in close quarters) I'm wary of using the Loctite thread lock glue, as it seems to need quite a bit of heat applied to get it to unlock, would a small amount of PTFE plumber's tape achieve the same thing?
  13. Here's a couple of recent pics of me with my beloved 906C ... Changed the stock, as mentioned previously, and added various red dot and LPVO sights, a stubby foregrip, and a suppressor for Tacti-Coolness. I use Lonex flash mags because I hate winding high caps, but they sometimes unwind slightly on insertion. Still worth it though. I have a Titan 11.1v 3000mAH in the stock. I have a heavy trigger finger so that lasts me most of a day. (There's a separate discussion about that elsewhere... My gun might need a tweak or a re-lube as it shouldn't be that hard on the battery) I changed the hop rubber and nub for a Maple Leaf Macaron 50deg plus Omega nub. That's a fairly standard way to improve any AEGs accuracy, I found it didn't seem to make any difference from the out of the box accuracy tbh, but I'm delighted with the long range performance of the gun to this day 😄 Typically I run 0.28g BB's, but I've run a full bottle of 0.32s through it with good results on a windy day. So that hop system is working pretty well for me. Others may recommend changing in a ZCI unit, but I'd see how you go first. The one thing you'll need to change fairly early on is the spring. The standard one seems to lose its mojo quite quickly. Easily done thanks to the quick change system, and an M105 spring costs only £10-15 Job done!
  14. Nah, don't buy a Double Eagle, they're over-hyped shit 😊 (That's just a little in-house joke there, I'm one of the resident fan-bois... they're great value guns!) I've got a 906C. It's a short carbine size all-metal gun. The numbering system is a little confusing, I think there is an explanation in one of the threads, but basically you'll need to double check against the particular specification to ensure you'll get a metal handguard, if that's what you're after, as even the higher numbers can have polymer handguards in some instances. So the other main difference between the 904/6/7/8 are in the style of the stock. The 908 gets a crane style stock that can take a nunchuck battery. That's useful, I charged mine for a PTS EPS crane stock which cost me a good few quid, so any extra cost of the 908 can be justified. I've had a few beers and it's late, I'll post again tomorrow 🤤
  15. In mitigation, I am currently considering which quite, or even hugely, expensive gas blowback rifle to buy... I'm still looking for the +1 😋. Buying another DE would just be a distraction from choosing from one of these... TM AKX VFC FAL VFC HK53 VFC SIG Rattler VFC or TM MP7 (I think I'll have to start a separate thread on good options for my next GBBR)
  16. Wow, that's quite the bargain! I've picked up some nice guns from Action Hobbies' boneyard for around the same level... if a DE popped up at the same price I'd have a hard time resisting buying it "just in case", but it's silly really, my 906 being my most reliable gun why would I actually need a second? Back to the topic, I guess Fatboy's post makes it clear that the problem with the Titans was definitely down to the rifle, I might buy another of their batteries again after all.
  17. It's crazy to think you could pick up a 904 for around £120, in the (g)olden days. They're still brilliant value given everything is so much more expensive (and it's all relative, innit)
  18. Yup that's exactly it. I am super paranoid to remove the battery as soon as the skirmish ends to ensure I don't kill another.
  19. Alright Spock, cool your jets 😁 3000 for the Titan 1400 for the Crazypony The Titan site says the 16C is equivalent to 30C on a 1400 Li-po, and the RoF did seem to bear that out. However I'll declare I've no skin in this game. I wouldn't buy another Titan because I had trouble with a couple dying irreparably after leaving them in the gun overnight, after draining them close to empty during the day. But the Titan I've got now has been fine so I continue to use it. And the company deserve props because they did replace them, as per their guarantee. Can anyone recommend a suitable Abbey lubricant, just in case?
  20. Not that I'm a prospective buyer, but just as a piece of selling advice: when selling something that's expensive, take several pictures... and use something with a bigger resolution than a Nokia 3310
  21. Excellent, looking forward to seeing you again Dan It's Monday though (the 29th). I hope that's what you meant! Have you checked the hop rubber is all in one piece and the hop is being applied properly?
  22. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with that. Either the 22 or the 28 TPA can then find it's way to my shopping basket
  23. Just tested my DE, it's now at 15 rps on my 11.1v Titan Li-Ion 16C. And it's the same 15 rps on my Crazepony 11.1v Li-Po 30C More damnable lies from broken chrono, obviously! But it's lost 1.5rps since I tested my DE shortly after I got it. Unsure if it's the gearbox gumming up, or the motor losing its oomph, or indeed both batteries no longer outputting as much current. Ah, the original test may have been on the stock spring, rather than the ASG M105 that's in there now.
  24. Given it's been a toasty and not overly impressive motor in the first place, I would have to say (in best Mrs Slocombe voice) "you are correctitudinous in this" I have on several occasions burned through ~4000 BBs on a day long skirmish, I'd need to establish a separate ammunition fund though, if I up the RoF I hopefully have some incoming good news on the job front, so the Upgrade Fund might itself get upgraded to the "Buy More Gnus" fund though
  25. I must have got one of the same bad chrono's too, that 16rps it's showing for my DE must be a lie!
