While a decent length range isn't always feasible for all sites, there's nothing to stop a player going into the game area before play starts to set their hop up or zero sights IIRC rift have a zero tolerance policy to dry firing in the safezone, anyone caught doing it is immediately sent home. While this may seem a bit harsh it only takes one person to accidentally leave 'one up the spout' for someone to have a very bad day

Not sure if they changed them or not, but when had an A&K M249 the hop nubs were a couple of mm too short so they couldn't give enough hop to be effective. IIRC the general consensus was to either replace the whole hop unit or cut off the right size piece of the inner bit of a biro to replace the nub

It depends on the site, and those who do will probably have restrictions on the size you can use. This can be down to insurance or wanting to keep the neighbours happy
