I have one or two spare mags that get dumped into an ikea type storage box & was looking on fleabay last week thinking I could buy some ammo boxes to store them all a bit better. Long story short, I dragged them all out to see how many spare mags I had & which types, took a piccie to post on here and realised that I don't need any ammo boxes... I have webbing hanging all over my mancave with ready made pouches. only got around 6 spares without a home now (mainly a couple of AK & some Galil mags).

So after lets just call it at least a decade away I finally feel that I'm back, so I thought it'd be interesting to share my journey as attempt to get my head around the changes in tech & re-develop my loadout to match my play style which hasn't changed in the meantime.

First off, I'd forgotten just how much I'd missed this both mentally and physically. I've been laid up in and out of hospital the last few years - to the extent that I've gone from superfit to completely broken. I finally found something which I could actually do without landing me back in A&E last October & thanks to a push from my wife - I tried out a game at my local airsoft site. I sold up pretty much everything (it was around the time of the in-fighting over setting up UKARA - alongside some horrible personal issues that was the final straw).

So I had my old ICS552, my custom WA S&W 1911, my 8mm Redhawk & a battered CYMA M3 rip off. Despite the WA utterly failing in the cold weather, the SIG shedding parts & developing the fire selection switch developing the attitude of a teenager I had a whale of a time. Finally picked up my PASS & the intervening time let me try out the modern "toys" and get my head around what I enjoyed.

I've never been a kit nerd when it comes to fiddling/upgrading or to achieving a particular loadout "style". Instead I've always ended up picking out what for me is the "best of breed" in terms of what does what I need it to, hence you could politely describe my look as that of a scruffy mercenary - as opposed to that of someone as likely to sell you a big issue as shoot you. I did get an ego boost from being described as a "Ukrainian nutter" though

So in terms of clothing/webbing I just go with what is comfy. At the moment its a pair of yard boots (closest thing to trainers in terms of comfort), an old pair of combats, norge, appropriate layers & a russian OMON style vest. Its light, room for 3 spare M4 style mags, shotgun shells, 2 blank firing grenades & some high energy shack items.

I then go with a belt running two bianchi holsters & spare revolver shells/pistol mags. Its nice to be able to dump the belt at the safe zone or go down to one sidearm without having to reconfigure everything.

So my general "normal" loadout now is as follows ...

SA-15 Edge - Batteries have moved on! Being able to fit a single battery in the stock which is enough capacity for a full day's play is a revelation. Battery capacity was always a factor in the past - so its great to be able to pick something I love the feel of without worrying about having to change/carry a spare. Aside from the tight inner barrel I didn't think there was much point in going for anything gucci. My AEG has always been a tool first. Hops have come on - I remember the old TM hop with its tendancy to unwind randomly (I ran both an M4 & SR16 for a while) but this is easy to set how I want it - and it stays that way. I also hated M4 mags - partially a look & feel, partially having to spend so much time keeping them working & feeding. Very much a fan of the new S-Mag style, plus no feed issues with either hi or mid caps. 3 spare mags in the OMON vest.

Shotgun - a reliable backup and sometimes main for CQB/thicker woodland. I love tri-barrel shotguns. I sold my modded M3 when I quit - so I picked up a BO Fabarms one to replace the battered CMYA one. Its similar size & weight but definitely has more poke & consistency just like my old TM but at way less than half the price. Will run as a spare as looking to get hold of a Secutor one as its even smaller & looks sexier (sorry). I figure it'll be even easier to carry slung on my back but for the moment, for the money I'm liking this a lot. Spare shells in the sling which goes over my vest so she sits on my back. If I'm ditching the AEG then even more shells in the vest on the shell loops - saves having to take time out reloading in the safe zone

TTI JW 4 - GBB's are so much improved. And I say that as someone who loved them. This has now replaced my beloved WA 1911 and I can't believe I've gone back to a double stack 2011. I tried lots but when I picked her up something clicked. The hop/takedown are quick, mags suffer less cooldown and in terms of range once I got the hop set - well she's perfect for pulling out and "going light" with a BFG or two. Very much feels like one of the old WA Inifinities - after I'd spent a fortune on metal gubbins, internals etc. but better - out of the box FFS! Pair of spare mags in an old mil-tec twin mag pouch on the belt (will be replacing soon as its knackered), gun sits in a Bianchi M84 on the belt. Lovely - you can keep your new fangled plastic holster things

Marushin 8MM Redhawk - yes she's an antique but with a thorough clean and lube she's fine. Fill valve needs a strip and bit of plumber's tape every few months but in winter - on red - she's up to her old tricks. There is something so pure about considered shots with a 6 shot shell loader ... it honestly feels amazing. Pair of .44 magnum speedloaders on belt, she sits in a Bianchi Cyclone holster. When she gives up the ghost .... who knows. Might have to look at a den wesson if only to be able to keep my love of using nothing but a revolver & speedloaders in game occasionally Oh, and if anyone knows a source of 8mm BB's that's be great, although I'm down to my last 700 they should last a few years as I tend to only get through a dozen every skirmish.

So that's where I'm at. It kinda feels comfy - like a modern upgrade of the kit "style" I know and love. When the weather warms up a bit I'll start venturing further afield - heard great things about the "x" site in Mold. Much prefer sneaky, muddy bog snorkelling/woodland play rather than speedball - although in building CQB does lead to me making disturbing sounds as I play.

Airsoft is definitely more popular. the kit better, the choice in the UK so much wider (anyone else remember the says of WGC shop/Den trinity importing *everything*). People messing around with Western Arms kit - endlessly upgrading/fixing seems to have been replaced by a different bunch of people endlessly upgrading/fixing HPA guns - but I'm really enjoying getting back into this

I'd like to do a modern tacticool high-speed m4 setup with my 2nd MWS, but all the real-steel parts are expensive.

So instead I decided to use what I already had to do a retro build instead.

If this is the same person I think it might be I'd like to follow this up even though it is a few months ago. Sadly, we/I had to ask this person to leave site after the 2nd game due to them not being able to follow certain safety rules. The rule in question being eye protection being worn at all times outside of the safezone.

Our google reply was as follows:
"Hi Danu, I’m really, genuinely sorry that we had to end your day and send you home early, but we are very clear that safety is our primary concern at AWA, and we have to send repeat offenders home. You should never, ever, take your eye pro off in the gaming area. You were warned twice personally, and a party to two group warnings as well as the warning in the morning safety briefing. We realise that this opens us up to revenge reviews, but despite our differences, I’d rather send you home early with two working eyes and suffer the bad reviews than the alternative. It’s the number one rule in airsoft, please, if you continue to play in future, at any site, you must take it seriously, you only get one set of eyes Danu, and we want you to keep them."

Tried a new site, but by a regular host - RIFT: The Battery.

Numbers were fairly low - about 35ish on the Sunday, and the previous day was about 25-30 by all reports. So under half, but this really helped the gameplay. Only a couple of rentals, and only a handful of people who have been before, so a bulk of people were in the same boat.

It's an old Battery Hen house, so 4 large interconnecting hen houses in an H shape, with obstacles and props in the outdoors area. The site is CQB, but i like it as it's not all right angle turns and dark rooms (yes, there are portions of that) but there are also good lines of sight, multiple flanking positions and not just people stacking up on corners. No pyro, so you had to shoot your way out, and Single shot only, with a gentleman's agreement of no just shooting at a corner to pin people down or spamming the trigger, only shoot when you see them - this really helped people push up.
If you locked down a corridor or opening, there was opportunity for the opposition to fall back and find a path to sneak up behind you. Doors and paths changed with the games, which is a nice touch. Being young and fleet on foot was definitely an advantage, so everyone actually ran from the spawn points, rather than the usual of a few of them sprint off and the rest trundle up.

Blue team dominated the 1st game, so a few went to red to balance. Same story for the 2nd and 3rd, so by the afternoon, Reds had more bodies to try and make it competitive.

Staff, as always, were on it. Minimal no-calling hits, and only the odd "I got you, no you didn't", as the spawns were only a minute or so walk away, and everyone generally seemed in good spirits.

Overall a really good day, one of the best I had, thanks to the site. It had a nice balance of not being out ranged by snipers and DMR's, but not to close that you walked into someone around every bend and doorway.

Most of RIFTs site are based around Bucks/Beds/Oxon sort of area, so this one is a bit of a drive way in comparison out in central Essex, and even though it's not a financially viable, the lowish headcount really helped the gameplay and pushing up.  I would need to see what it's like with a full compliment of 60 to see if it makes it better or worse.

Figured its about time I shared my 20 year old TM Steyr AUG.  Still my only AEG and running perfectly with some upgrades over time.

Still want to play about with the under barrel rails but this does the job for now and doesn't look too bad.  A barrel clamp with Rail riser attached.  I got a 3D printed rail similar to the AUG HC piece but need to modify it a little to fit.

Also need to get the Feyachi magnifier to sit behind the reflex sight (which is sitting quite far back as I needed to fit the lens protector on (not an issue when I get the Red Dot Eng. protectors in.

Had a few things in the works over the past few months. First up: MG42 converted to MG3. Its probably 70% real steel parts nowadays. Its currently off getting HPA'd. *Really* excited to finally finish it. Had to pair up with a local guy who has a Wehrmacht kit and a MG42 for a quick photoshoot.

Next, converted one of my Real Sword Type 97s, the 97b in this case, to HPA. Had to make a custom nozzle with some help from Norwest Airsoft in the States.

Im slowly falling more and more for APS-shell shotguns, but hate dealing with shells. So sometimes I just use my Wargame Striker12, which contains spent shells. But for those days I prefer to use the 870, I found a biodegradable PLA material made from algae and am printing shells for that pretty constantly, whenever the printer isn't running on something else. They aren't very strong and tend to break after a few uses, but considering they cost a pence or two a shell, I don't really care.

Next, my 417 EPM-1S project is nearing completion. I thought I had it down with v5 (last worked on in July 2022) but when I broke my G27K out of storage I found that the mag was far too large, and required loosening my hop unit to feed - so that wouldn't do. v10 seems to be the magic number; it feeds even with my hop properly installed, and seems almost perfect. Just a few cosmetic things need sorted, like the positioning of the BB window.

Finally, this is an idea I've had for awhile but never got around to. I've wanted to make a Bundeswehr-accurate optic for my MG4, considering my only other option was finding a $1000+ Hensoldt 4x30i. Well, we've been snowed in here in the mountains for the past several days (and am about to be for several more) so I knocked this out in about 10 hours over the last two days. Its printing now, and if everything fits Ill send it off to be SLS'd. It uses real surplus Hensoldt 3x inserts meant for G36 optics, as the real one appears to - they're also pretty readily available which is good. It cannibalizes parts from a cheap G36 optic, including the G-36 style rail nuts, adjustment bolts and heat-sets, rail, rail bolts and heat-sets, and rubber view piece and forward scope retaining piece. Basically all one needs to make this optic is the files, the basic G-36 optic from your local airsoft shop, the three new crossbolts to attach it to the rail, and the Hensoldt insert.

    edit:

vfc flashlight handguard had a slight front/back play which is annoying as the hole for the pin is oblong-ish.

I removed the two strips of plastic to allow for battery space for mounting it on the A5. I cut a small piece from those plastic pieces and glued it at the back of
the rear tab (which hook into the upper receiver). No more front-rear play anymore. No creaking. I now use the stock push pin instead of the locking pin that came with my Magpul SL handguard for the mp5.
