    World of Tanks

Got back from holiday and got massive cravings to reboot my PC gaming (or my excuse for PC gaming) and decided to test-run a couple of MMOs. Picked this one up last night and so far pretty impressed. The tech-tree is nice and the free-to-play is really good, seems I won't need to chuck a penny at it which is sweet. Gameplay wise, little disappointed. I suck hairy sweaty donkey balls, literally my first game I rolled straight up a street and got slaughtered. I'm improving though, still annoyed that the only tank with which I succeed is French and I'm not even trying to surrender...

    ICS L85A2

Yeah it's pretty solid Marcus, I've dropped it down stairs before, my LLM was fucked over monumentally but the gun was fine. Dropped it on concrete before at The Asylum as well, it landed barrel down and bounced back up a few inches before slamming down in its side. Not a mark on it, sights still configured, still shooting the same. Like a rock. It is all made of stamped steel so I'd expect as much. I've got a Gbase ACOG with red dot from Fire-Support now, picked it up recently for about £130.

    Gun picture thread

Nah you're right, it is a bit messed up. It's non-functional as well, so it's not the greatest copy ever, but it's the best I'm aware of up to now. I'm pretty worried about the fire selector markings coming off and stuff too, think I'll have to be careful with it and avoid rain...

I'm not great with boxing analogies, so I can't really say. The Leo is more agile and slightly faster, with a gun with better penetration (but it's not much. We're talking mm here). But, the Chally makes up for the lack of penetration with range and accuracy, and having even more armour. Ed, Challenger 1 took out tanks at 3.2 miles/ 5.1 KM If I was going to pick an all round best tank, I'd probably say the Centurion. It pretty much laid the foundation for what we know as the MBT (the triangle of protection, firepower and mobility), it was incredibly reliable and robust, and it can still take upgrades. They're still in service in some places - with 120mm guns and modern electronics. Not too shabby for something that was originally designed in 1944.

Actually, the lower-hull of a tank - the sides where the suspension and road wheels are - is pretty thin. They were designed under the assumption that they'd rarely be hit (tanks either hull down and hidden or driving flat out), but IEDs weren't factored in during the design process. Which is why recently we've started seeing side-skirts re-appear. A hit there from a 90mm gun, or even an 76mm HV gun should be enough to damage the tank. A few of the Abrams lost in Iraq were due to RPGs hitting previously unknown weakspots next to the fuel tanks. The Chally's turret is among the best protected turret armour around. Frontally, there's a good 2+ feet between the external armour surface and inner "shell" of the turret, not to mention a layer of something like kevlar inside to catch spalling. The roof is thicker than others, as the tank was designed under the assumption that it would spend most of its time hull-down and having artillery shells rain down on it. Not to mention the fact that the Challenger 2's fire-control handset was designed after the PS1 controller. Clearly designed with the gamer generation in mind
