if anyone's wondering, the camo i'm wearing is the Russian 'Ripple' camo (aka Ryab). i got it from here (Hyper link attached)
(before i forget, i need to get some kneepads)

A second hand DBoys AK 103 body and two 7.62x39mm polymer mags to go with it for £50. All it needs is a gearbox and barrel, I already have both.

Dan_W reacted to jcheeseright in Manufacturer's out of the box performance
For your normal AEG I'm still putting r-hop down as snake oil along with the fallacy that a longer tighter bore barrel is 'more accurate'. I've shot a huge array of guns and I've never had one shoot reliably further than 60 yards (that's a measured 60 yards on a range, not an airsofter's "my gun shoots coke cans at 60 yards") effective range. R-hop, j-hop, q-hop bla bla bla... none of them shooting 350fps or less have gone really any further reliably than that distance.
For a sniper rifle yeah it may be a marginal gain but for your average AEG? no.
That and sorbo pads, radiused gearboxes... really now? I know I roll this out pretty regularly but my old Marui M4 had been chugging away reliably for MORE THAN A DECADE with zero maintenance before I sold it, that includes a couple of years sat in a box under a bed with all the seals 'drying out' (clearly they didn't) and it shot just as well on the day I chrono'd it for sale as it did the day I bought it back in 2001. This is the same brand that uses 'crappy plastic bushings' and pot metal gears along with a terribly low tech non-radiused gearbox shell and not a bearing in sight! Yes, there are performance gains to be had on this design, but even so they're marginal... bearing spring guides etc yeah, they might extend the life of the gun by another decade?
Reliability is entirely down to good materials and quality control, without those things all the best bearings and sorbothane are useless from the factory. Performance is also entirely down to good materials, design and quality control... an r-hop by all accounts takes a vast amount of fettling to be effective and it'll never work from the factory.
Airsofters have this massive fixation with 'upgrades' and chasing the next big performance gain but if you've got a half decent gun to begin with you're chasing smoke, if you've bought a JG M4 with 5 previous owners you don't need upgrades, you need your head checking.

Here's what needs to be done for no real tech work out of the box to be needed, for my standards at least.
AOE corrected with sorobthane padding (New lonex guns come with this, only manufacturer who does this I think) does wonders for long term reliability and durability.
Proper shimming (Some higher end guns have pretty good shimming, like TM)
Good quality bushings or 8mm bearings (Not the sh*tty plastic TM & JG as well as some other outfits use)
Deans connectors (G&P have this)
Low resistance wiring (Lonex have their silver plated looms in their newer guns I think)
Good sealed hop up and an overall properly made hop up unit. Realsword literally use some sort of glue to seal their buckings 100%. TM are still famous in their way of making hop up units work really well, some guys like CYMA make the best units in ACM.
Bearing sporing guides (lots of outfits are coming out with these, which is nice)
A basic mosfet (G&G nearly had this but their mosfet sucks balls)
Good greasing! Not the sh*tty snot the Chinese use. FFS silicone grease costs pennies! Why do some manufacturers use odd colored earwax? Thankfully most high end guys have this done
Radiused cylinder windows - Spread stress more evenly through the gearbox
Aluminium gearbox shells- Although they can be used, Zamak shells are starting to get too weak for the higher stress stuff like DSG builds and super powerful DMR stuff.
Neodymium motors - Neodymium magnets cost only pennies more than ferrous magnets. You can get an SHS HT for 30 quid, and most chinese manufacturers are coming with these.
Part suitable for long term use and usage on stress higher than what comes stock- Metal injection molded gears are starting to come out at good prices and in stock guns like ICS Transform4 line, Polyacetal and Nylon pistons are very common on ACM.
Some things I may have missed. But that's my basic opinion
Right now there are no manufactures who's guns out of the box can compete with tuned or upgraded custom builds, but they are getting close now. More and more stock parts are getting better and do not need replacing. Once companies get proper material and part usage going it's just a matter of time until they start doing things like AOE correction and proper shimming stock.
All we can do is still do the 15 quid tuneup and wait.

I had a nice lengthy response wrote out explaining my reasoning and trying to help you (I am being 100% honest here. I was about 15 mins into it), but I accidentally clicked the back button on my mouse and lost the response. I am in a bad mood now so here is my short answer.
Don't bother with your more powerful spring and motor. You don't need it. Your FPS would have increased with the TBB and teflon tape. And as some newbies incorrectly think (thanks to a certain few retailers) a higher FPS does not mean a longer range. I have seen 330 FPS AEG's outrange alot of unupgraded 450 FPS snipers. Most CQB places won't allow much above 330fps anyway.
Use the money shimming the gearbox and maybe some stronger or better ratioed gears and improving accuracy. (I'm not sure whether I should say higher or lower ratios anyway. Ones for a higher rate of fire anyway )
A higher gearbox version number doesn't mean it is better than a lower numbered gearbox version. The type of gun is gearbox specific. For example a V3 is an AK gearbox. Have as google for the V7 gearbox and you'll see what I mean. It is for an M14.
A MOSFET is probably a better idea than a more powerful spring. However it seems like too much faffing for me but you may have a different point of view. Hence I'm not too clued up on MOSFETs.
Well I hope this shortened answer answers a question or two. Any more questions feel free to ask.

There seems to be a question mark over the reliability of these G&G MOSFETs. Dunno. I mean, if you're going to end up putting a different MOSFET in it, maybe it would make sense to just put one in the G&P. Still, I hate M4's so what do I know?

I don't think it's really worth using the dark footage, I might as well just turn my screen off and just listen to what's happening.
You could try upping the exposure on the darker footage though, it'll make it grainy, but it'll also make use of what little light there is and make it possible to actually see... Potentially.
I've fiddled about with exposure settings in a few of my videos and it really helps.

Dan_W got a reaction from Ian_Gere in Anyone know where I can get an AK front set?
I'm in no real rush at the minute, so I can wait until I find the parts I need. It's more of a little side challenge to build one. I've learned so much techy stuff I would have been scared to try had I spent loads of money on a new AEG.
I too am enjoying just messing about with it and if I get it to a usable point I know I will love it like a child.

I wouldn't give up on it so soon. Check out some yank forums where a lot of Polarstar techies hide. Some guys like 'SilentObvervant' from reddit are really knowledgeable,as is Bingo from Bingo airsoft works. AirsoftMechanics is also a great place to discuss those kinds of issues. There could be a myriad of issues and might be easy to fix. Could be nozzle alignment issues or it could be that the Fusion engine itself is not releasing the same amount of air all the time due to an issue with the poppet valve or something.

Dan_W reacted to Airsoft-Ed in Photo update! Custom SR25/L129A1 Sharpshooter Polarstar!
It's been oooohhhh so long since I actually started a topic, but I think I have reason to today.
A while ago now I bought a custom made L129A1 based on an A&K SR25 URX, and since then I have wanted to put a Polarstar into it, because it only came shooting at 300fps and it was a pile of cack.
I have skirmished it once and with it only firing at 300fps, the obscene weight of it was just too much considering it's immeasurable crapness.
Well today, the dream became a reality and I finally got a Polarstar into it.
A long time ago I started a topic regarding whether or not fitting a Polarstar into an SR25 was even possible, due to Polarstar Fusion Engines all being standard sizes, but SR25s using longer, 7.62mm style receivers; and obviously a standard V2 and hop configuration would only fill the same space as a regular 5.56mm receiver.
So to get it to actually fit, I had to a buy a G&G SR25 hop unit, and the Polarstar G&G SR25 air nozzle. The G&G SR25 uses a standard V2 gearbox and long hop and nozzle configuration; so that made up the gap you get from using a standard V2 size Polarstar in a longer receiver.
However, the G&G hop didn't fit properly, so I had to remove 4mm from the back of it, which also meant I had to remove 4mm from the front of the nozzle (the highly accurate digital callipers came out).
So with the power of a Dremel tool me and my mate Joe managed to get the length PERFECT on the first attempt, we crowned off the nozzle, rounded the edges to get rid of any sharpness, and voilà.
With a black nozzle we're getting about 425fps at 120psi, meaning it's firing nicely at 350fps on .30s, it may actually be more due to the barrel being a .01mm tightbore, so there'll likely be a degree of joule creep, but we've only chrono'd on .20s so far.
But shooting nicely it is, nicely, for at least 60m with a respectable, rough 1.5ft grouping.
1.5ft actually sounds terrible now I've put it on paper, or internet space...? But without looking through an optic you'd watch the shots going down range and be thinking, "Well, being on the wrong end of that would be shit" because it's only once you see it through a scope that it looks as bad as it sounds, and don't forget, 1.5ft is about as wide as your average person, and most of the grouping was out along the vertical axis, which means it's pretty much down to hop inconsistency.
But! The target was a 6x4" metal plate and mounted about 10m higher than the firing position, so a man ought to be a doddle to hit at around 70m I reckon. But we'll have to wait until the weekend to see how it actually performs in a game situation, the true test will be when there's only an arm visible around a tree at those sort of extended ranges.
Personally I think it'll be better once the hop's had a chance to better bed in, I'm using a Madbull red rubber with the stock nub at the moment, but R-hopping it with an expensive Prommy barrel is very much on the cards at some point down the line.
Before I get the funds for that I'll be trying a much more rigid H nub though I think, since the stock nub is squidgy as all hell, which I don't imagine is great for consistency, and almost definitely the cause of all the fliers.
Not been this excited about using a gun since my first ever purchase
Oh, and here's a reference photo of the real one it's based on:

Dan_W reacted to Ian_Gere in Quick question about manufacturing RIFs...
Just bear this in mind: the police have got far better things to be doing than chasing up someone who may have painted a toy gun 3 days before they had a definite defence against prosecution for having done so, which defence they gained by turning up to an airsoft site with said gun, especially since the intention to do so is the defence, in this aspect of the law, but also since the Association of Chief Police Officers have said the law is unenforcible (hence our hypothetical coppers would have a bit of explaining to do when their arrest record for the week was scrutinised). Plain and simply, nobody who understands the law can take it seriously and, by definition, anybody who attempts to give you grief about it doesn't understand the law so fuck 'em...
Just don't be a dick with your AEG, whatever colour it is, and you'll be fine. Naturally, should you decide to test the limits of what "being a dick" entails, it will not be contravening the VCRA for which you will be arrested, but any of a string of firearms and/or public order offences which existed before and will exist long after the VCRA has been quietly superceded.
