  1. No personal experience with that type of RIF, but looking at how it is assembled, potentially place a slither of something under the lowest side (of that weird two part hop unit  - no idea why Ares have used that design - very out of date) before those two screws are tightened? A bit of aluminium from a cut up coke can might do it for example, or even some card.

It stuck in my mind that the borders were never actually mentioned, because there weren't any, but it's actually kind of hard to break from the normal mindset of being fairly penned in. I'm pretty sure it was far quieter last time I went and it was better, but of course it's just warming up now, ground's mostly dry, clear skies. I'm sure you're absolutely right about the numbers, with DT shut it makes total sense for the other nearby place to get way busier.

It's crude, but in the games using the full area, generally the red line shown below is the rough boundary. Most players seem to stick within the yellow ringed area (i.e. only a 1/3rd of the playing area) - which on a busy day gets somewhat congested:

    So, anyway...

After the foreign trip I was obliged to take last year by His Majesty I've had lots of leave to use before the new tax year and I've done 3 games this year already, which puts me on track to play the most I have since about 2009 ?

After reading a fair few very good reviews I wanted to try out Dog Tag near Gatwick as I've not been before, but they weren't running this weekend so I went over the road to Driver Wood. Their site slogan should be something very 'safe' and unassuming, like 'Driver Wood, you'll definitely not have a bad time'. It was absolutely: fine.

Track leading down to the entrance is the closest to a real mettled road I've ever come across, car park pretty solid. Tons of decent benches, stringent SZ protocols, big range of hot food (plus snacks) available, not a bad little airsoft shop with tons of consumables and a selections of shooters. Rather than a the standard rotund organiser/marshal shouting in an attempt to herd the pack of unruly cats they've got a tannoy system for the briefing and timings to get back in etc, gives it a very commercialised feel that's pretty strange to experience by airsoft standards. Safety brief was delivered in a tone that comes across like the bloke is sick of his job, which I do fully understand, but I also don't pay to be slightly patronised in the morning tbh ?‍♂️ Made me wish I'd gone back to AP.

Seems it was a busy day, ~130 players. The site is big enough I'd say, but at the end of the day the main area which is used for regular airsoft play (there's various other small arenas for paintball and kids' airsoft) is mostly just a flat piece of dense pine woodland. There's enough barrel clusters and the like dotted around, but apart from the one fire break where all the old vehicles are, I found within an hour or two it's already pretty stale. They've got a few other areas that didn't fit in to the scenarios and weren't used. I say scenarios loosely, because there wasn't much to them, no opportunity for more than 1-2 people to really be involved at any one time, and since the 2 games for the day were similar and were both just reversed, the entire day was basically just 'fight over the site' (essentially no difference on attack/def other than regen point). Nobody got spawn trapped or anything, but it was a tad WW1 feeling, and not in the sense of brutal trench CQB.

The one thing I really found odd was MEDs. Their rules online say 10m for auto and 0m for semi with a standard AEG, which I think makes total sense, seems like a good rule. Possibly I misheard in the morning, but what I heard was 10m minimum for any primary weapon and only sidearms or melee to be used within 10m, pretty sure I heard it again later too. Now that makes no sense to me, because sidearms and rifles have the same muzzle energy rules; one of those things that made me question my own brain a bit? It just puts a damper on all movement as if you don't have a pistol (I don't bring one unless it's definitely a requirement), then you have to 100% ensure you'll never round a corner and come upon an opposing player close up.  Oh and one marshal doing chrono'ing said 0.23g BBs don't exist...

Didn't see any major agro, all ran pretty smoothly, good safety all around. They actually allow some types of TAG and they sell charges and smoke to launch from 'mortars'. I saw a lot of different interesting gats and gear on people which is always fun. So I'd never say I'd never go back, but I won't rush to book again either. If you live SE and ever feel like 'I just want to play somewhere' but the sites you want aren't on or you can't get to them or whatever, it's the safety option for you.

P.S. Did get very lucky in one regard, I've had an item up for sale here and an interested buyer messaged me who happened to live right nearby, which circumvented my least favourite thing about online sales i.e. when you send it off and spend the next couple of days praying RM/PF don't fuckin break it. Top bloke too, we had a lot in common.

It's my closest site, and one that I go to the most. In terms of woodland sites, I only have this and Dogtag to compare (and Driver Wood  is definitely my favourite) - so I don't have much of a yard stick. I do find that there are huge areas of generally unpopulated woodland on the margins of the main area that allow for some more sneaky and cunning flanking plans- but often these aren't particularly discovered until the second or third visit. Certainly I feel that the site can become a little attritional when they have large numbers of players like you experienced. It does cut down on the opportunity to execute a well thought out plan, and the difference between having a really good game and a frustrating game comes more down to pot luck, than if there were, say, 60 or so players.

Perhaps try to experience it on a quieter day, and you might come away with a touch more favourable an opinion - although its anybodies guess when a quiet day may be! I suppose Dogtag being shut  for the weekend might have been a clue as to why it was so busy.

(As an aside - anyone know what is going on with Dogtag? No bookable game days on their website at all at the moment)

Off on a tangent - in my 24 years playing with toys I have seen more accidents due to fogging then inadequate eye protection. Hopefully that implies we are doing something collectively right at least.

This is the logic i employ too when i have inexperienced mates and their kids coming airsofting with me - I always lend them full masks, with mesh goggles so they aren't tempted to lift them mid game to wipe away the fog. I appreciate that mesh has its drawbacks, but I have concluded the likelihood of a BB fragmenting AND having enough retained velocity for the particles to do some damage on the other side of the mesh is much lower than the likelihood of the mask being lifted by a young kid due to fogging.

  5. You would probably get quicker sales, and ultimately make more if you were to list separately, or as a minimum bundle similar items (e.g. your M4 mags) into smaller bundles to sell. Very few potential customers are going to want everything in your complete bundle, so in order to make the purchase worthwhile to them, they would be looking to sell the unwanted items on at a profit. All of that adds up to less money for you if you don't separate it out.

  6. I do agree with the logic. In the event of an incident I can't help worry that a sites reputation, insurances, and a whole load of other more human factors could conspire to screw a site over - we already know that many are run on rather marginal grounds, which is why I'm surprised than most don't have a full seal rule.

hate to say it but this is a you problem , you saw him from a distance off, you knew he was coming , you didn't have the discipline to not pull the trigger because you where tunnel vision in the optic

Nah, personally I'm not convinced to be honest. Situations like this are inevitable - getting hit on the way back to respawn is frequently par for the course. Anyone who mouths off to other players when the inevitable thing happens are bringing bad attitude and aggression into game - there is no place for this type of behaviour. The shooting was an accident - we can debate all the factors as to why it happened or shouldn't have happened, but ultimately it wasn't a deliberate act. The unacceptable reaction from the player that got (over) shot was a deliberate act.

  8. The G&G rubbers are reasonably good as stock buckings go. You could try with a prommy purple rubber, or  one of the usual maple leaf offerings (but as you are using the stock inner barrel, you may find that it's window is a little too small for the maple leafs).

Unfortunately, some experimentation may be required, including with your chosen tensioner/nub.

  9. This is the kind of thing you are after. Uses the existing delta ring and front handguard mount. Plenty of alternative manufacturers and sources - you could probably find one in the classifieds on here.

Note that the 'ribbed' side on handguard in the picture is a plastic sleeve that slides on. e.g. https://www.sixmm.com/en-gb/products/gg-knights-type-kac-ris-ras-rail-cover-panel-4pcs-setmarkingdeluxe-ver-blk?_pos=6&_sid=a56fc4159&_ss=r

  10. Yep, as much as people like to knock them, there is no denying that they clearly put a bit of thought into what they put out, and bring some good inovation to an otherwise reasonably static market. The ready supply of spare parts from the off ought also to be applauded. I know they can be a bit cringe at times, but....

Cost will be everything of course, but a gas sniper that becomes an HPA sniper in winter- that sounds fun.

Plus, if you run compatible side arm, you only need to carry one type of magazine and pouches.

Granted only one type of mag, which gives you greater flexibility I suppose - but ultimately no reduction in the overall number of mags needing to be carried - unless you go for a load of extended hicapa mags that will have a higher capacity than the typical GBBR rifle mag.

DIY. 3.5mm hexagonal hole / 4.5mm pitch / 1.mm galvanised steel sheet.  No warranty, not medical advice, the value of your eyesight may fall as well as rise.

Very interested in this - is the mesh readily cutable by tin snips, and what glue did you manage to use to stick it to the fames?

I just switched to mesh goggles and, wow, problem solved.

    This, and never look back.....

To be fair, I do still prefer traditional googles indoors due to the lower lighting levels, and super close ranges. The Pyramex V2G goggles are the most inherently unfoggable goggles i have tried, and when teamed with the antifog unit (mine is a nov one), i don't have any issues at all.

  14. I'm liking the KS1! Though I can't justify another Ar15 varient to be honest. My money is waiting for the new range of Cyma Platinum AKs (mercifully coinciding with the new tax year....). Decent gearbox internals, and their historic achilles heel-the infamous cyma mosfet has been rectified with an EShooter device. Full steel bodies too.

  15. The original AAP mags do have weaker springs in comparison to, say, WE (coincidentally I was loading examples from each manufacturer this afternoon ready for tomorrow's game and it is noticeable). But I'd agree with the above - something not right with the feed lips.  If you have ruled out the bb follower catching/rubbing in the channel, then probably worth taking off the lips and giving them a gentle sand where the bbs feed through...

  16. I bought the valken mi-7, recommended above by Rogerborg, as my first mask, and it has been pretty good. I've managed to mist it up a few times, really depends on the weather. These days it soldiers on as a loaner (along with some cheap kombat full face masks with a mesh goggle section).

Personally I prefer a reasonable quality set of mesh goggles paired with a separate mesh and fabric lower face guard. My first pair of nuprol mesh goggles have taken tens of hits ( maybe 30 or so, I wasn't counting) with about 6 visible dents before I decided to retire them and replace with a identical pair.

The mesh vs polycarbonate lense debate rages on, but I have confidence in them (certainly much more so than the plethora of open sided/non full seal shooting glasses you see people wearing), with the slight draw back of the darker picture significantly offset by the fact you never need to worry about fogging.

Got it i'll be getting 0.28g bbs then as the site near me is also indoors and i think there is an fps limit.

Best check their website then - often indoors sites only allow a max BB weight of .25g. The advice to go heavy on BB weight is more aimed at outdoor play, where the extra range, punch, and resistance to wind etc benefits a heavier BB. Indoors, I actually prefer a .20g bb, as ranges are short, they hurt people less, and they are faster to target.

With the new aluminium nozzle, it was noticeably too big but the one in the video is the original. Hop rubber is a maple Leaf but doesn't seem to protrude off the barrel any more than the stock one. I'll swap it out for the original later and try again.

I'm betting that this will resolve it. I have a few guns that simply won't feed with maple leaf's, although the MR bucking lips are more forgiving that the longer macaron lips. Whilst Maple leaf are my go-to choice, I have also used G&G Green buckings which provide adequate performance and seem (mostly) universally compatible.

  19. Agreeing with all of the above. good quality 0.28g BBs will be one of the most effective 'upgrades' that you can do to improve accuracy and range (and help punch through light vegetation). 0.25s at a pinch.

in relation to the number of magazines you are getting, obviously it depends how itchy your trigger finger is and how fast paced a particular game is. I tend to use semi auto only, and range between using 3 x 140rd mid cap mags to 6 mags for an hours woodland game. If your gun comes with a hi cap, then that obviously gives you a bit extra (i tend to brim a hi cap, and leave it as my reserve mag), and hi-caps can very easily be filled from a bag of BBs mid game if necesary too.

  20. For pure target practice, and assuming that your garden is sufficiently sized/orientated to mitigate additional hazard from the higher joules output, you might want to instead look the direction of .177 pistols. Plenty of semi auto (co2 powered) .177 steel BB firing pistols (which are generally reasonably accurate, at least in comparison to plastic BB firers), and even semi auto .177 lead pellet firers with rifled barrels.

A Second World War British infantry kit is definitely on my radar. I'm split between the S&T and the Ares, particularly as Ares do the No. 4 (T) scoped variant.

I think either would be a good option. The S&T is cheaper, but seems to require a bit of time and money to get it up to standard (but not much of either).

I'm looking into the feasibility of tapping the S&T receiver to take the Vector Optics scope mount, which should get me a half passible No.4T (as long as you don't look too hard at the location of the scope turrets!) for not much money...
