Ballistics and how less power is more energy delivery.
AirSniper replied to AirSniper's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
LOL, yeah I'd concerned too... However, the same laws of physics and thermodynamics applies to airsoft as it does to airguns and real steel. The laws of thermodynamics can't be broken, you can not get more energy out of an item that you have input. Likewise, input too much energy and its just wasted energy as the projectile is unable to dump its energy, you know BB's that really hurt... thats effective power from the output and BB weight. Ballistics works no mater the scale, so a 0.2g BB with too much fps is not as effective as one that is lower with the right BB weight, this is where joule creep comes in. -
I see and hear often about people wanting to and looking to power up their RIFs to the maximum permitted on anyone site. People seem to think that throwing more energy in to something will make it go faster and that contrary to what is believed, it is counter intuitive to use lower power as its often more effective. The best demonstration of this reality is a youtuber that made a video about his fire arm that was a PCP based rifle, long barrel and the calibre to make your eyes water but the principle is still the same, you just have to imagine that the 1150 grain slug is 3.08 grain BB (aka 0.2g) So rather than me going on about it, watch the video and first be stunned at the pure awesome that helium is and then check your faces on the shots of the ballistics gel and the high speed camera. You will see in the demo that the power in PSI from the High Pressure Whip in play, is lowered in stages to find the "Sweet spot" in the power setting to both gain accuracy and delivery of the energy, so it dumps that excess and as you can see what the 1150 grain pellet does is pretty scary. So apply that principle to airsoft guns, less power means better results all around, its a question of finding the sweet spot for your BB's to deliver the whack they need to.

I have seen some US airsoft games where there are players with real machine guns firing blank training rounds... What people don't realise is that a blank trainer has a wadding in it that is like a projectile, so you shoot someone with a training round at close quarters, you risk maiming the person. You have this issue where the wad plug in a "Bang and Scare em" cartridge, usually home made, ejects at velocities that can seriously hurt or kill someone. As things take off in the US, they catch on here. I see no need for this level of realism, Airsoft has it all that is needed and in a safe format, unlike people wanting to bring formats that are potentially lethal to a game, sorry, not up for that. If you want more power or bigger bangs then get a shotgun licence and go clay shooting.

Not to own until he is 18, the UK Law is same for RIF's as it is for Air guns and real steel. Your only deviation is for military personnel, where they can purchase and own a RIF under 18 years of age. So legally, you are still responsible for the item. I will go as far as to say that if you gift it, to ensure he is not going to use it without supervision, to buy a trigger lock, so even if he finds the batteries, he can't fire it, its obvious it can't be fired with a trigger lock on it so no issues if he took it out the front door and someone then calls police as they will likely turn up, see its locked and give a stern word to him and your collar feeling for letting it out of its box. Because you are legally responsible for what your son does with that RIF, just like an air rifle or real steel. Police do not mess around either as they will send an ARV to the scene. Even to an airsoft site where an incident happens with RIF's and say ambulance needs to attend, then ARV goes in first like the story I heard at one site recently where the incident had the ARV teams scrambled to the site. So acn people here get in their heads 18 years old. and that is it, over 18, until you break the law for some offence that bars you from using, touching, using or even looking or dreaming about guns, you can own a gun, airgun and RIF up until the courts ban you. On a more long term side of thing, if your son did get you in trouble, any future gun or airgun ownership is in jeopardy. For this reason, my son is not allowed to have any RIF, Airgun or gun at home, even in the gun safe... Why? Because his mum has no concept of what is legal or not. She would allow him to take it to the park, for example, I made it clear that until he is 18, I keep them and control use of them and is 100% supervised. It is up to you and what you do at the end of the day, gifting it does not remove your responsibility or liability and ownership can not be taken until he is 18 years old.

Mine from when I got it, the gunsmiths had a sealed box, so not a display item! My sons was from a display rack but came with a box.

Nice bit of wood that. I am currently working on mine. The walnut is very dry and has already guzzled 60ml of oil..! I think I need shares or something, I have put in to it so far about 20 hours work and still some way to go by the looks of it, have managed to balance out some lighter areas. Well I am running a HW100 which is current production (well from 2019) I put a Nitehawke 6-24x50 AO Mil dot IR scope on it. On my sons, he has a HW57 that recently had to go back to be repaired by Hull Cartridge. It started to fire at FAC speeds after a Dieseling episode which IMHO compressed the spring to beyond its tolerance and why its only 2/3rd the power. HC doesn't seem to think that the underlever snapping back had anything to do with the problem. My only concern being that the barrel is no out of true from the impact of the lever, as you can banana your barrel if not careful. Anyway, was great to go shooting and my son's chart, given he is a) Partially Sighted b) not sighted in... This is his chart after he works out where to aim to do this... Which is impressive when you consider the disadvantage and disability. Top marks from me on that one.

Not airsoft related but I was able to take my HW100 out to play at an open range middle of last week. My first outing with a new Air rifle, last time I went shooting was about 30 years or more ago. Sighted in, put up a new chart and ruined a nice 5 for 5 with a cough that set the gun off, the trigger on the HW100's are very light and I had already pre-tension'd the trigger. You can see how that cough imparted some yaw spin as its clear it went in sideways on.. Any other target shooters in here?

You can easily look up ballistics calculators for guns (real steel) and use them to determine the range. I had a great one years ago, no idea what happened to the site but it had a graphing suit with it that showed the trajectory and the distance you should get with the parameters you used, things like BB Pellet weight, Joules, inclination, and out pops the range you are getting. If you are ready for it and can stomach a challenge, here you go : https://shooterscalculator.com/ballistic-trajectory-chart.php and ... https://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmdist-5.1.cgi

I would if I hadn't twisted my ankle. Today I put my shoulder out through coughing, of all things. I play the Sunday afternoon game session, its more a case of something for my son, I go to take part, have a bit of fun and not sat there waiting. So I have managed to bench myself for the second time in less than 5 weeks. Maybe our paths will cross at some point, my sons birthday soon and likely be up there the Sunday nearest his birthday. I was planning on a birthday with games designed around objectives that were part of a "Story Themed" game. Interest from his friends is mixed with most wanting to go but hardly any parents approving and those that do, have no transport. So the plan is to take him and a couple of friends to join in on a regular game.

My son plays at Hells Airsoft, he loves it, I started playing myself and its a good site. So what on the draws and stalemates, thats reality of a well balanced set of teams that have got to a stalemate situation because they were a team not a bunch of players running mad shooting up anything that moves as sometimes happens. The lay has changed recently and they have introduced new games and objectives. Its a case of suck it and see or "Marmite" mate... You'll either love it or hate it. Its been updated.

I have seen youtube videos of players with machine guns that fire and you see the muzzle flash. Thats the sort of firearm that I refer to in the reenactment scene, which is where they belong and not on a game field.
-
On one hand you do commit an offence by modifying a two-tone. You can own a RIF without a UKARA, you just need a defence with ID or proof of that activity like they are police, military or are reenactment players or acting (TV and Film). Police do treat all air guns, including BB Guns and Airsoft as firearms and all fall under the regulations on firearms. Also, if you are stupid enough to had a RIF in public, you are likely to be facing an ARV and have a pound of lead pointing at your vitals from all angles and really risk being soul raped if you are total dick and do not comply. Seen a police TV show which was filming locally and in one incident a call in the police had the ARV turn up to a park not 100 meters from me, a group of kids had a BB gun, the kids were young and literally crapped themselves. Its on that Channel 4 or 5 show. https://www.my5.tv/police-interceptors/season-18/episode-14 From 7 minutes in. They treat the people with RIF's and blank firing same.

All I can say, from my time as a target shooter with air rifles, there are many disabled people that partake in the sport of shooting, some so disabled that the clubs assist with finding specialist equipment or design equipment to help the shooters. I have seen one guy disabled from the neck down and his PA does things like the loading and charging the rifle, a tutor is there to give guidance and the client gets a buzz from doing the rest themselves of aiming and shooting. As for airsoft, a site my son frequents has a player who is mobility scooter bound because of his cerebral palsy. Myself, have mobility issues as I was born with a disability myself that affects my ability to mobilise, I can walk but not run, if I try running, its more like moon hopping, funny to see. I do what I can and take part in play that I can and any good site like an shooting club will know if they are able to cope with your needs or point you to a club that has all the facilities and possibly specialises in players with health issues. As for the term disability, its a broad term, encompasses mental health, so wouldn't surprise me that the game has plenty of people with mental health issues that do the sport because it helps them with escaping from life for a few hours. I welcome a break myself from daily grind, break the monotony of just existing, IMHO all sites that are able to and have terrain that can be used by disabled players, it would grow the sport more and offer new options to people who may never of thought about the sport. I wonder how many people would benefit from a drive from the various sites to provide game days tailored to the disabled of all degrees, also don't forget that many children have disabilities that could gain benefit from child based games and not mixed with adults as I notice that some players treat kids like they are adults and that to a child can be off putting, on site has a rule that kids are not targets unless they fire an then the response must be measured like no full auto mag dumping on kids, preferably to just take a hit yourself, good for the kids moral and enjoyment. They are the future and players who are older need to adjust game play where kids are on site. In fact, in many cases, new players who experience mag dumps of any age are put off by returning to the game, we had an incident where a player only 2 games in left because they got deluged and literally picked on. Sad because it loses players in to the sport when the sport needs to grow.

Yes very. They go nuclear for many reasons. Too high a current draw = heat = thermal run-away, goes nuclear. Puncture one, goes nuclear. Short the terminals, goes nuclear. Wrong Charger setting, goes nuclear (if wrong voltage, too high current input) Many reasons for them to go nuclear.

Looking for the cheapest supplier of the Perun ETU++ units, cheap because I need two of them as I have two G&G's that could do with them, especially for the sites where its semi-auto and no full auto. I am fed up of hitting full auto as I swap handed play, the semi setting clicks off and instantly full auto is available when IMHO there shouldn't be any firing as its not clicked in to the position of full auto. So hearing about this ETU++ today, I need two of them.

Thanks, i have been actuating it daily and firing it daily to get it worked in and there is a point where it binds when the level of the gas is not that low and appears to be causing a performance issue. I think because its the only WE pistol out the 5 that I have already, that is the difference, the rest are TM and I have been using that as a point of reference. I stripped the 17 down as far as I dare, cleaned and re-applied lubricants and ... so far its been ok as my lad has not said anything about it not firing properly and we have had two outings with it to sites, so I hope the problem is now fixed. Still leaves the cause, dirt?, lack of lube? BB's even as I have upped the weight to 0.25g from 0.2g which also may be a factor in providing more slider kick. IT'S WORKING, I am not complaining and thanks for all the input. Level 1 complete.

Today's game, everyone was calling hits, no overkills, generally people were there to enjoy the game and no shot guns. The previous week was a mixed bag of issues, people not respawinging after being hit, not calling hits, head shots despite centre mass being the bigger target, I am not bothered by head shots, had one this week, got a bleed from it, it wasn't intentional unlike the previous week when I had been hit in the head then a few seconds later, again with three more despite signalling and calling my hit. Overkill. So this weeks game was like a breath of fresh air.
-
I will add my tuppence worth. Joules remains the same energy input to the BB irrespective of your BB weight, heavier BB's like 0.25g travel slower and hold their energy better than a 0.2g BB. A BB can not gain more energy than it has had imparted on it, that would break the laws of thermodynamics. What I think is the problem is that your pistol chrono'd high because you have a possible leaky valve that is letting too much gas through which would throw the energy output up.

Maybe he started slowly working his way up receiving a Darwin award...

This is why I do not approve of people bringing blank firing guns to airsoft events for the re-enactment part as they are dangerous, anyone who has had one can tell you that the safety guide makes it very clear that there is a serious risk of injury from flying metal that can get stripped off the casing and ejected at bullet speed velocities.

There is nothing you can do if the barrel is jammed with a BB(s), the only way to get them out is to rod the BB(s) out or strip. There is the possibility tat you could shoot them out but thats not wise if there are multiple BBs stuck. Looking down a barrel is just stupid, even with a kids toy BB pistol, still have your eye out if loaded.

I have heard rules of, if your weapon is hit, you are hit. The headshots thing is a contentious one and realistically, if all you present is a head, expect head shots. However, in the spirit of the game being for fun and not to intentionally hurt people, some people will do head shots even if there is a full body mass to hit. Had it this week at an event, hit on the side of my head, the BB wasn't a 0.2 as I have had plenty of head shots in close quarters to know the difference. Head shots don't bother me unless they are obviously intentional like that incident was, I took myself out for the remainder of the game as I did get fed up of other players not calling hits and the intentional head shots. I think a whole number of issue in airsoft need addressing as the honour system is really not optional, the game relies on people accepting that they were hit and following the rules.

There are online tools that are free that link to sites that can make the PCB's for you. It is a learning curve and one that started to climb and gave up on, mainly because I could see that the programmers could just as easily automate things to make the process easier to understand.. I am still searching for a tool that does the job in a user friendly and logical manner and not the weird convoluted methods that are more like 3D Autocad, makes me wonder what is going through programmers minds these days. https://easyeda.com/ is not easy at all, in fact, its very confusing. https://circuitmaker.com/ never tried this, its a new offering by Google. http://www.kicad-pcb.org/ didn't get off the starting blocks, I was stuck at the blank start page. https://sourceforge.net/projects/tinycad/ is one I am about to try, another new offering by google search.

Sadly, even those that have listened to briefings many times, often display a lack of ability to follow them. IMHO all people playing should be made to read out a hard copy, sign it and if they still ignore the brief, boot them out. Sites have rules for a reason. I have played on sites that allow full auto, similar sites that only allow 3 round bursts and 2 second count between those bursts or single shot, as fast as you please. So, if you are a regular at a particular site, it is still important to go through it as you will notice that some things you do forget.

Most sites offer hot beverages, check. Portable camping chair / stool. Cool box for keeping drinks cool on hot days. large box to put your dirty kit in car, I use an old suitcase on wheels. It holds everything I need including the RIF's, something that if you have a lot of kit is a good investment. If you have no cover on site, a large fishing umbrella won't go amiss. I also carry a change of clothes and a towel in case I get wet. Towel is useful for when you are hot and sweaty and need to wipe off the excess sweat.
