RIP to the SCAR, FN Ceased Production.

At least my unlicensed Airsoft copies are safe.  Think this will effect demand and future production of them in the Airsoft world?

Same for WW2 replicas etc. Real firearms ceasing production has no bearing on the Airsoft market tbh

Slovenian Army can't catch a break. First the FN2000 and now the Scar.

Tbh it's not surprising given that they never really got that much adoption, and most of the European stock of them were donated to Ukraine.

 

Which is currently functioning as the graveyard of all the Cold War Classics.

Exactly. From a customary glance of Wikipedia seems like the Belgians (very logical choice) and the Portuguese choose to make it their service rifle. The HK416 being adopted by a lot of the high speed folk didn't help things.

Interesting news. One the one hand not surprising because it's never been truly popular and paying to keep those production lines going for decades now must have finally gotten annoying enough for the company to cut their losses, but on the flip side they really tried hard to push it for so long that it almost felt like they'd just have it on the back burner forever more.

 

Time has definitely moved on since it was designed though, the more recent LICC offerings have a lot more potential moving forward.

 

Given the popularity in games etc I don't see the airsoft replicas going anywhere any time soon, if ever. Most certainly not for a long time because most of airsoft always lags years and years behind.

You talking about a specific manufacturer or version? FN still churns them out in the US.

I've not researched other mfgs, but there will be various other production around the world too I'm sure, given the large number of governmental forces that have adopted them and the massive proliferation/popularity of the design.

Not the SCAR, their standard rifle is basically a 416 though.

The issue was fn had no real military interest in the scar and the only was acquired by SF units. Even then the us socom units soon removed it from their inventory as most soldiers didn't like it as much as had a more higher failure rate to the M4 platforms used. So fn discontinuing it i understand why. Luckily this won't effect Airsoft production as there will always be a need for it as a Airsoft gun.

Your probably thinking of the SEALs, who bought a few of the 16’s and then decided they didn’t like em.  I believe they still have / use the 17’s though.  They never however fully adopted them.

It's not surprising really. The program it was originally designed for was cancelled by SOCOM and most of their sales were relatively small numbers to special units.

 

I don't think it will have any effect of availability of airsoft SCAR replicas

Is the FAMAS still being produced? Its been at least 34 years since Tokyo Marui brought it out (I remember as Dad brought me one back from Japan for my birthday) and if they are still making it I guess the SCAR will be safe :).  Although must of had a new mould by now right?

TM retired it 3 or 4 years a go. Pretty sure CYMA has retired theirs as well.

I misunderstood the OP originally, but FN posted on IG and clarified this. They're only stopping making/selling the civilian versions they sell in the US, military production is unchanged.

 

I don't know the MSRP per se, but a taking a quick look on GunBroker the various rifles seem to start at around $3700 and go up from there, which most likely means they were hardly actually selling any. With companies as big as FN, even if something is making profit they often won't deem it worthwhile unless there's really huge volume/money in it. I'd imagine their more 'conventional' 5XX series pistols and the FN15 ARs do a good bit more volume since they're more suited to the American market and much cheaper.

 

I remember many years ago there was a relatively brief period where they sold semi-only F2000s in the states (called the FS2000 I think), which I believe were made in Belgium then shipped over the pond. But again I'd bet there was very little profit in it comparatively speaking, so they're fairly rare and collectible in the US now.

 

Does leave me wondering if they'll end up cancelling the likes of the PS90, M249S etc in future.

That makes more sense as the SCAR is still the issued rifle for the Belgian military
