Heya all - I may be blind but i havent seen much information around what sort of paint is the best to use on metal RIFs, anybody got any ideas on what a good brand would be to go for and if so, what sort of colour options i'd have?

Halfords do a good range close to Krylon https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/specialist-and-decorative-paints/halfords-camouflage-spray-paint-green-300ml-252044.html

If wanting a hard wearing finish you want ceramic based, cerokote or durakote is the go to for firearms not cheap have goggle.

I have had good finish's using auto paint and sealers in the past with trial and error if mat camo colours are not what you are after.

If you shop around you can get Krylon on E-Bay for next to nowt.  For a tough finish it's not too bad,

As Chev says, Cerecote is all the rage at the mo.  It's a wonderful finish and getting cheaper(ish) all the time.

Krylon is my go to.

It can be found for a good price, application is easy and the finish is lovely and matt.

I use it for all sorts of paint jobs not just painting rifs.

Who does a decent quality sand/tan paint? I usually use Krylon, but it’s a bit too bright in colour. Almost looks to yellow, as shown on my old Gordon Carbine build.

I’ll have a look through and see if I have any khaki. If not I’ll get some and give it a go.

  • 1 year later...

First of all apologies for the necropost but I figured it's not worth starting a whole new thread.

After my OCD got the better of me I decided I need a green holster to go with the rest if my kit and as the ammomax P99 bolsters only come in black I decided to paint mine.

Unfortunately it looks like halfords have discontinued their camouflage spray paints as they're nowhere to be found on their website, so after searching Google I found this

https://www.sprayster.com/product/warehouse-soiled-can-maston-camouflage-spray-paint-ultra-matt-reed-green-ral6013-400ml/

I'd never heard of the brand Maston before, but as it was on offer I decided to bite the bullet and try it out. It went on well and dries to the touch in about 10 to 15 minutes. Colourwise this looks more brown when it goes on but the green comes though as it dries.

Edit: here's another pic which gives a better idea of the colour 20240816_201352.thumb.jpg.0fd077c7f0e36701980f018bbe97d14f.jpg
