  1. Evening all,

Just wondering what the concensus was on protecting your optic lenses from being shot out, is there a purpose made item out there for sale (to fit a RIS rail, in this instance) or, and these are always my favourite, what crazy, custom goodness have you guys come up with to protect them?

Obvious questions; where did you get the foam from and what tools did you use to cut it?

Because that's looks as quality a finish as any others I've seen!

  3. Ah I see that's where we see things slightly differently; walting and re-enacting through a faithful representation are different things in my view.

Now, walting, I absolutely couldn't stand for.

But yes, in reality there's no need for it, but for some it's part of the immersive experience; would you object to someone wearing a 101st Airborne Division flash on a 2nd World War outfit, for example? Is that as bad as a Para lid on a Goose Green outfit?

You might not have an issue, but most guys who've served have a deep seated respect for their regiment & it's history, as well as memories, both good & bad, of their service, & to turn up at an Airsoft game only to see somebody behaving like like a dick while wearing their beret & capbadge, it's gonna trigger something.

& before you say it's not that likely, it happened to me, young guy behaving like a total asshat, hair literally halfway down his back & rgj beret/badge worn "Frank Spencer" style.........not cool😠.

I'll reword it slightly; I wouldn't be offended if you wore my Corps insignia if you were doing it with the knowledge of what you were representing.

But, like I say, I may be in the minority being of that view.

Not really, the seller is in the wrong here not the buyer.

I have no interest in the military and wouldn't know the difference between that helmet and a mk1, so if I was in the market and liked the look of it I wouldn't have a problem buying it.

I'd like to think if your buying this kind of item you've got some idea of what it is your putting on your head and where it originates.

Don't get me wrong, the seller is 100% the issue here, but I'd hope that anyone worth their salt spending (I'd expect quite a considerable) amount on a helmet to be aware of it's route to market.

Unfortunately, there are still people rocking awful 6/6A's at formed Units, because there aren't enough of these (amongst other item's) in the system to do so, and it's definitely not helped by someone banging their kit on eBay at the end of their careers.

I know some people don't mind it but obviously it would upset some people therefore Im probably going to stay away from specific regiments/units insiginias/patches/berets etc just to be inclusive and trouble free. I'd never want to say I've done/earned X when I haven't either, people who do that are totally disrespectful to the people involved.

Totally understand, but to have served in the Falklands you need to be getting on for 60 now; so assuming your a couple of decades younger than that, I'd be surprised if anyone called you out for walting by throwing on a maroon lid, but totally understand your reasons for not doing.

A Beret/Unit Flash and Medals are totally different; medals I couldn't forgive (and you'd be surprised what's on eBay unfortunately) but a bit of insignia (especially of a conflict your age clearly suggests you weren't part of) I wouldn't say is an issue.

  7. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if you did wear Regt Insignia or what have you if your just trying to be true to a specific era/Unit/Conflict.

Start spinning dits about your heroics with the SLR on Mt Tumbledown and you'll likely upset a few folk, but I don't/wouldn't have any issue with anyone wearing insignia if they've researched and understood what it is there wearing and why.

Please don't buy stuff off ebay like this - AFAIK Mk7 helmets haven't been released for public sale yet and even if they have certainly shouldn't be on eBay.  They remain the property of the MOD and shouldn't be sold by private individuals - its theft.  If you need to buy ex-military gear please go via a shop that will have got it via the correct disposal methods.

What's worse is it isn't a Mk7, it's a Virtus helmet and absolutely definitely shouldn't have been getting flogged on eBay. Even worse for buying it frankly...

  9. Hey all,

So, I've a solid metal case which I acquired a few years back (see photo's) and I'm wanting to create some foam inserts so I've got a safe place to secure my modest selection (M4 GBBR and WE Glock 17) plus magazines (4 X 5.56 & 3 X G17).

There is some foam already in there which I will remove, leaving just the foam that actually lines the box.

Does anyone have any experience in a DIY foam cutout for something like this?

I'm not overly concerned about it looking uber professional, just secure and organised.

Essentially my questions are; what foam, and what tool for cutting it with? And any other snippets of info are appreciated!

I am thinking the weapons themselves in the bottom portion, and a second layer in the upper segment for magazines, but need to work through the idea a little more thoroughly first!

Additional thinking on a revised layout...

Sight removed gives a little more space!

Looks pretty well adjusted, which is a rarity.  Get a standard non-FR issued UBACS if it's still warm when your local re-opens though or you'll die of dehydration 😂

And then go for the hero sleeves and you've pretty much got the whole look nailed down, right?

By 'the SA80' do you mean the family of firearms that includes the L85?

In work I call 'em guns, gats, bangsticks, shooters and a million and one other things since saying RIFLE ad nauseum when you're literally surrounded by the things gets super boring tbh.

Again, apologies. Put it down to being isolated in the arse end of nowhere and spending to long working with the Arty.

They get all excited about the difference between Guns and Rifles... And it's unfortunately rubbed off on me a little.

Probably varies from camp to camp let alone between services, but on a basic level the stuff you get issued on your gun has to stay on there, but you can move things around to wherever best fits.  The SUSAT can be slid back and forward on its' rail in to 3 different positions and from what I've seen usually people get to pick wherever fits them best.  The Elcan LDS obviously goes on pic rail so has many possible mounting spots.

As mentioned the grip-pod that is issued along with the DD pic handguard can be moved wherever is comfortable.  I'd prefer mine further out for example but with osprey on and lying prone I can't reach the thing unless it's pretty close in.  I've seen infantry guys with their own magpul AFGs and RVGs amongst other picatinny attachments.  Personally I have an aftermarket sling that's just made to look similar enough to the issued green one that people don't question it.  If you look up recent pictures of army guys on deployment (i.e. within the last 3 years) you'll see lots of examples of small variances in configuring the A2 and A3.

Lost all credibility when you referred to the SA80 as a gun...

EDIT: My apologises, that was a really spikey response and totally not helpful.

Assuming your serving, as the the points you make are all totally valid, just got a nibble from me reference the obvious!

  13. Evening Gents,

Well, you guys have a variety of backgrounds and experiences and perhaps one of you might be a PVC expert, who knows? Might spark some discussion on preferences anyway!

Last year I had a set of Webbing custom made by a company in Colchester for work. Its been brilliant as yet, survived various Exercises/ Courses and hasn't failed me yet. However, it has one issue!

The pouches, as good as they are, aren't brilliant at keeping water out. PLCE pouches are excellent as they are all lined with (I assume) thin PVC stitched to the inside. 2 of the pouches I got aren't (As I didn't select the option to at the time). there brilliant pouches with clips that make life so easy, but I think they would be made even better if they were PVC lined as per PLCE, it would help them to keep there shape when empty too.

So, my question is, anyone have any idea what PVC material would be suitable for lining a webbing pouch?

I'm handy enough with a sewing machine and I've got two weeks christmas leave coming up, got to fill my time with something!

    Cheers all,

    Liam

  14. Only thing I can pick up, that doesn't require buying anything expensive, that hasn't already been mentioned is Helmet scrim.

Not sure if there is a particular Herrick "No" your going for, but for 99% of deployed lads in the past couple of years its been scrimmed helmets (though don't ask me when that came into effect). The new helmet covers come with a bag of pre-cut scrim, but frankly it isn't enough to do even a quarter of the helmet. Not advising you cut up your trousers for it, but if you come across a buckshee/ruined set of PCS on eBay etc, worth a couple of quid to sort the helmet out.

  15. Evening guys,

Just out of interest really, as its something I might try and pursue in the new year having never owned a GBBR and personally think the DMR platform is the way forward.

Obviously, there is the maintainence side of things to consider, and various little bits and bobs that can be added (NPAS etc) that I have little to no knowledge about.

But, that aside, you need somewhere to start. So, if you were to build a GBB DMR with an unspecified budget (Lets try and keep it reasonable, but be free with suggestions) where would you start?

    Liam
