Even the US spends a smaller percentage on defence than they do on "social protection" or welfare as it's also known.

okay it deletes anything bigger than a certain character count... okay that's annoying but all i want to say is if we sort out the country we will have more money in the country and i am not saying we should just spend this purely on defense i agree that we need more money for the NHS and schools, but it is a bit disheartening when the government cut the defense budget again and again, especially as i am going for a military career but that makes me a bit biased i guess.

I figured your position was driven by being military in some way. No bad thing that, but maybe try asking a nurse or a teacher or a pensioner where the money should go It's a tricky balancing act and all too easy to only see one part of the equation.
