  1. I have my regular live fire setup with electronic ear muffs and safety glasses with very thin side pieces but even those get uncomfortable after a few hours under the muffs. I've also found that I often knock the muffs out of place from cheek weld. I don't know if that'll be the same with airsoft. Personally I don't believe ordinary safety glasses are good enough as they generally only protect from objects coming from directly in front not from all directions and they're often easily dislodged. Mask or goggles would be my preferred option. My paintball mask has the thermal (double glazed) lenses so fogging isn't bad. The biggest problem I had with them was heat. I had to wear a sweatband under them or I could end up with sweat dripping down the inside. It was quite a bad problem at an all day milsim event in the summer. Should I look for a perfect all round solution or do people generally have different setups for different conditions? My ear defenders have a speaker socket so I'll try plugging my XTM446 in if I've got a cable. I've never thought to see if it works. (PPE doesn't come out of the toys budget.😁 I'll get whatever works best for me.)
  2. Thanks guys. I've been watching YouTube and seen all sorts of headgear. Some people have suggested amplified ear defenders as ear protection. Is that a sensible option?
  3. Hi all Just getting started and looking for advice. I've got my old paintball mask but I'm looking for recommendations for more appropriate PPE? Preferably not mesh lenses and looking for full face/head protection. I'm tempted by a helmet but that's probably going a bit far. Already got stuff like dpm, boots, SP sling, LiPo/Nimh charger. 1st gun Option 1 (after quite a bit of research) JG MP5 SD6 £105 (already got an SD5 in .22) which I'd be looking to upgrade like the one below. I've got a Vortex Sparc2 kicking around to go on top. I figure I'm ahead of the game here as I'm well practiced at stripping down the clamshell receiver on my SD5. The only unusual expensive upgrade would be a Perun ETU++ as I'd like the option of 3 round burst and precocking. ("because I can") I'd also want to get a torch forend eventually. Option 2 A G&G Raider (£100 new on Z1 classifieds) upgraded in similar way. (I've also got an M4 in .22) Any thoughts or advice on the above much appreciated Should I spend a bit more on the base gun? Cyma or ICS SD6? or Specna Core M4, Double Eagle M904 etc. I don't really want to spend more than £150 on the base gun unless it's really necessary. Budget for the gun is £150-£200 for the gun including upgrades. Battery and mags extra Accuracy and semi auto are priorities for me. I'm planning on running .3g BB'sz
  4. I had to look up "bro science"😁 It seems to be just get what I like the look of, play with it and if it doesn't do what I want then start messing with it. I don't think I've ever owned a gun for more than 5 minutes anyway without modifying it, either because I had to or wanted to so that's fine by me.
  5. I found this website which explains it but I don't know how accurate the info is. https://airsoftranch.com/optimal-cylinder-to-barrel-ratio-simplified-airsoft-guide/ Is there a rough rule of thumb that people use or is it just trial and improvement? (I like the diagram of how an AEG works)
  6. Thanks. I'm used to 300mm minimum barrel lengths. Is there a usual barrel length people use or just whatever you like the look of?
  7. Hi All Noob question 1. Does barrel length matter? I've read that quality matters most but assuming best quality does a longer barrel give more accuracy? Or is a there a sensible minimum? This will be for woodland as those are the nearest sites for me. I'm used to running around with a 26" barrel AR style 12g shotgun so anything shorter than that is fine. Noob question 2. Could I get a short gun for CQB and swap out a longer inner barrel and cover with a fake suppressor for outdoors? Assuming there is a thread to fit a suppressor to. Long term plan would be M4 for outdoors and MP5 SD for CQB. I'd also like Semi + 3 round burst if I'm being picky. Any thoughts or help much appreciated.
  8. Thanks all for the welcome. I have loads of questions, mostly about accuracy but I'll drop those into the appropriate sections of the forum. Rob
  9. Hi All Been lurking for a while and thinking of giving airsoft a go as it looks like my kind of fun. Lifetime shooter, mostly RS and old enough to have shot with handguns when we used to be allowed. Just got a custom TM Hi Capa for IPSC Action Air 'Open' shooting and this got me looking at Airsoft. Played some scenario/milsim paintball way back (still got the marker and some kit). The Mall at Reading, Copehill Down, night ops at an old industrial estate were the best games. Always played with a 20 round hopper so never a 'real' paintballer. Couldn't afford a box fed marker back then. Accuracy first, never 'spray and pray'. Favourite tactic - flanking or better still 'get behind them and shoot them in the back'. Comfortable with the M4 format, totally love the feel of an MP5, CQB has to be handgun and Tech stuff is half the fun. Looking for my first gun like every other newbie but not in a hurry. That's me. Advice, hints, tips or info always welcome. Cheers Rob
  10. Taiwangun appear to be in Poland. To get orders under £135 they will need to become UK VAT registered. Probably not worth the effort. Orders over £135 should be fine just make sure they don't charge you the VAT. Problems with logistics due to Brexit/Covid are a whole different game. I'm no expert though. Just reading the rules. EDIT: Looking at their website they don't appear to offer international shipping so they might well be unable to ship to countries outside the EU completely. When I try to buy from a Double Alpha in the Netherlands they require a minimum order value of £135 but they definitely ship worldwide.
  11. The new UK import rules from the 1st of January are (as I understand them) :- Up to £135 - vendor charges UK VAT and pays the VAT to UK govt. - Many vendors are saying it's too much trouble (they have to become UK VAT registered) and won't touch consignments under £135 both EU and worldwide. I think it's duty free under £135 but I'm not sure about that. I'll have to check. Confirmed Hong Kong companies already have an agreement to pay UK VAT so may still handle consignments under the £135 limit. Hold-ups from there are due to Covid and flight availability. I've read that e-Express services to the UK resumed this week. Over £135 - No VAT charged by vendor. VAT and Duty paid by the carrier in the UK (Post Office, etc) who sends you a bill + handling charge. When you've paid them then they'll deliver. Over £900 - VAT registration, import licences etc. Details are here:- https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/notice-143-a-guide-for-international-post-users/notice-143-a-guide-for-international-post-users
  12. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/notice-143-a-guide-for-international-post-users/notice-143-a-guide-for-international-post-users This makes interesting reading if your keen. Dated 22/12/2020. Not sure if it's been superseded. If I'm reading it correctly for consignments up to £135 (in P&P) no duty is payable :- For consignments over £135 VAT (20%?) + Duty (2%?) + £8 Post Office handling charge is payable to the Post Office when they send you the bill. I don't know why or how this has changed.
  13. I just tried to order from them. Put the UK and my postcode into the shipping calculator and got "Sorry, we do not ship to this destination"??? I this just me? I've ordered other stuff from AIP and they said there is no airfreight to the UK at the moment only surface transport 6-8 weeks.
