They usually fit ok, the ridges help compress the rubber on the barrel and aid the seal. I have occasionally had to use a drop of silicone oil on the outside of the rubber to help it slide in to the hop  (oh er ! 🤣)

generally isn't a problem, as mentioned the purpose is to improve seal around the rubber.

 

unless your hop unit is particularly tight it won't be a problem, although the only hop unit i've met that did that was the madbull rotary unit and that was so damn tight it didn't matter what rubber you were using (giggedy)
