New guy and some advice need?

Just wanted to say hi, i been playing for about a year and i have a few guns, but i just got myself the  E&C 203 417 DMR. I have never really upgraded my pews pews before i have always left them standard out of box. But i want to help this one to be able to deal with the heavier BB's like .38. So am i just needing to upgrade the hopup rubber and bucking? Or the whole hopup system with a Maxx or EON? If a Rubber what type do i need for a DMR? This 75% 50% kinda confused me to be honest.

So to spin up the heavies you're typically looking first at the bucking.

 

Fortunately these days it's relatively simple insofar as a maple leaf macaron+omega nub (you need the omega nub unless you've got a hop unit with a rounded block eg the maxx units) is going to do good work in most situations. Although it must be noted the occasional pew doesnt like the slightly longer feedlips.

 

The whole "degree" thing is a rating on the softness of the rubber, if you think hard/soft car tyres it's basically the same premise. Softer rubbers will grip more and spin up heavy rounds easier, but will wear down more quickly and softer feedlips can deform causing an air leak on higher energy pews. Typically the tan is a good all rounder for uk limits/temperatures.

 

That, with good quality heavy ammo and a clean barrel will often get you most of the way there.

 

The thing that can mess it up is poor air seal, you can most easily test this by firing some shots through a chrono and seeing what the variation is between shots, or just when shooting if you notice vertical dispersion. This becomes a much more complex thing to address and often requires popping open the gearbox, which isnt advisable until you have a backup pew handy.

I spent most of yesterday chasing the same problem - built a MK12 from parts, but enormous fluctuation in power levels. I tried three different buckings, three different hop units (and combinations thereof), before eventually spotting white BB residue on the (metal) gearbox nozzle. I've now popped a different gearbox (extracted from a cheap Specna AR9) in there for the time being, and its sorted it. In due course I'll strip the original gearbox down and have a play around with different length nozzles.

You're looking for consistency shot to shot in the main. If your hop is struggling to lift heavier BBs and your power is where you want it, there's no air leaks and minimal variance on power between shots then I'd say start with the hop rubber and nub. Maxx and Eon hop units aren't always an upgrade, while they are made to higher tolerances than a lot of hop units, this can work against them if they don't work right in your gun.

 

If you have inconsistent power or you can't get to the power you want with just a bigger spring then you have other issues which will affect the accuracy and consistency of the gun.
