Second Hand RIF

Hey guys so I’m 16 and don’t have a ukara but have been playing airsoft for a while and somebody told me that I can have a second hand rif because the law only applies to airsoft retailers is this true and could I get into trouble for having an rif

You can't buy RIFs.

 

You can be gifted them, though, and it's not illegal to possess one either. Only purchase!

No.

The law on the sale of RIFs applies to any seller.

UKARA is a scheme introduced to form the basis to protect retailers, but the onus to prove a defence exists applies to every seller.  It also applies to anyone who ‘modifies’

 

As you are under 18 its an offence to sell you either an IF or a RIF

 

If you end up with one then you are not committing an offence by possessing (unless it’s stolen goods)

If someone sells to you then they are committing an offence.

If someone gives you one then that’s legal under ‘gifting’, but that’s still a grey area as the law specifies sales, imports and modification and doesn’t explicitly legalise ‘gifting’

 I suggest you ask your parents very nicely to gift you an IF, which you can legally "convert" into a RIF via paint or the purchase of parts etc regardless of your age, just make sure that you qualify for the defence. It sounds a bit OTT but a really easy way would be to book an airsoft game before you actually "convert it" but i wouldn't stress it too much - reading and understanding the FAQ + acting sensibly is like 99% of it. good luck and enjoy
