So you need buds as well as the racals and the surefire ones run more expensive than the racals themselves (they also offer protection on their own so if you just wanted to play with protection the surefire on their own would work but no fancy electronics)  Now if you have buds and the racals and a AAA battery you already have the hearing protection and can just run that. After that you need to look at getting custom wiring for them or a PTT or both to get a radio hooked up. The cost starts mounting up.

To be honest if I wasn't wearing a paintball mask I would just run a fist mic with a 3.5 output and run these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Honeywell-Howard-Leight-Foldable-Defender/dp/B001T7QJ9O/ref=sr_1_43?crid=35K1ZNXYEA1L9&keywords=ear+defenders&qid=1565349236&s=gateway&sprefix=ear+defen%2Caps%2C305&sr=8-43 they do the ambient enhancement the hearing protection for loud bangs and have a aux in you can feed a 3.5mm jack to.

Funnily enough, that's exactly what I'm running. They don't play nice with Dye i4s though because they just slightly intersect with the edge of the mask which over the course of a day gives me headaches, causes the headset to move, displaces my mask, etc. I'm done with supra-aurals, going to see if in ear is less of a pain in the arse.

  2. The prices for these Racal Frontiers on eBay is insane, they're essentially active hearing protection right? The weird connector just makes it hard to hook up to a radio, ignoring that you can't get in ear active hearing protection for anywhere near £10. Is there something I'm missing here?

Also whilst I'm posting here, anyone know if those 5 pin lemo connectors are 1B? I guess that's a sizing code?

For those considering Racal Frontiers, I use mine with Surefire EP.4s they stick out from your ear slightly however when the noise cancelling kicks in you know you’re safe had mk5s go off at my feet whilst crouched with no issues. They comfortable enough to wear all day long but make sure you get the correct size buds.

To answer the question yes they can be used with ‘normal’ ear phone tips however you will have less protection as they don’t fully “plug” your ear canal and they may not hold them self in correctly.

I got my Racals from JCI comms with a standard NATO plug so I could use a standard PTT and I will be buying a set of comtacs for use with a helmet soon.

I'm actually looking for an in ear solution now; this looks good but I don't know if I can use them. Can they be plugged into Baofengs? Also I don't understand how you're wearing these and EP4s at the same time?

Sorry about the questions. Did you replace the O-Ring or the entire piston? Luckily I picked up the SHS nozzle myself. Do you recommend a particular motor? Cheers for the advice!

No worries it's fun to chat about. I only replaced the O-ring. As for the motor, the reason I know the SHS high torque one doesn't fit quite right is because I bought it and it doesn't fit quite right! It cost £30 so I put up with it being a fraction of a millimetre too high, it doesn't seem to adversely affect anything but my OCD. If you want to know anything else feel free to PM me!

Did you end up replacing the compression parts or did you PFTE it up?

Cylinder head was fine after PTFE tape, the o-ring on my piston was just barely too small and sometimes failed to seal so that needed replacing. The nozzle was a lost cause so I just got a replacement SHS one with an O-ring. That took the FPS up to 270.

Any other bits you think I should order?

A new motor, the stock one is so weak. Don't get the SHS high torque 16tpa though, it's a good motor but the screws on the back of it are weirdly chunky and pushes it up too far in that particular motor cage. Some epoxy to stick down the bushings might be good. Could also get some 16awg cable for rewiring and smaller cables for trigger.

Worth getting a better hop unit along with the bucking and nub?

I actually think the stock hop unit is fine although I did replace mine without knowing what I was doing. Something I didn't realise at the time is you only change your hop unit for stable hop application if your stock one can't do it. There's no good upgrades for the P90 in this regard because the Prowin uses the stock arm anyway. You can argue airseal for changing your hop chamber but that's generally resolved with PTFE and/or the dental floss mod.

As for the bucking and nub I just went straight for maple leaf because I got over excited. I wasn't blown away with the results but it's good, like a good stock gun. I suggest trying it out and making your own call or turning to others with more experience on that one.

Do you think the 14:1 gears will suffice?

I found the stock gears are fine;  I might not be the best person to ask because I prefer ~20rps. Getting silly RPS just because you want to see how to do it is a good enough reason to me though. Try stuff out, break it, fix it again, learn stuff, they're cheap! Good luck.

My brain decided that I needed to learn how to work on a gearbox and decided to buy the following:

    CYMA P90 CM060B

Nice choice, that's the only AEG I've ever worked on and I really enjoyed it. Plus the compression on mine was utterly tragic out of the box (150-180fps on 0.2s) so I had good reason to mess with it.

  7. These things are almost half the price and have good reviews,

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07BSB7YW4/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A24AEIIXDULKWI&psc=1&th=1#productDescription_secondary_view_div_1536081008998

22dB noise reduction vs 33dB but the reviews of the 33dB one suggested they were very heavy and not great for extended use. Considering I just want to avoid hearing damage, not necessarily achieve total sound isolation, do we think these would do the trick?

  8. After ending up with tinnitus for a couple of days from being in a building when a grenade went off I'm keen to start protecting my hearing. Active protection looks like it would help whilst being useful in other ways (and the enormous cans look cool to boot). Does anyone know of any that allow you to connect your radio/Walkie Talkie?

If it's important then my radio has one of those rectangular ports that separate the headphones and mic but I suspect I can find an adaptor for whatever the cans have.

Faulty goods returns should always be covered by the seller, it's consumer rights and essentially the law. Always challenge a seller and always know your rights.

Agreed but as we've all experienced at some time or another getting such rules enforced can be far more effort than it's worth. Classic Army seem to have quality control issues so I want to try and make sure I buy this thing from a retailer that won't mess me around.

  10. Shame about this as when I contacted them they made it sound as though returns would be paid for if something was dead on arrival. That just leaves Zero One as my option for a Classic Army M249 Mk2 and they'll be away till September. Oh well, waiting it is.

😢 I'd imagine that it'll restock everywhere at more or less at the same time, and I'd rather give my money to someone who hasn't just messed me around.

Yeah good advice, I missed out on a crazy deal of £250 for the CA M249 para from Fire Support because of holding out for Extreme Airsoft to come through.

So far I'm having a mixed experience with them too... Bought a new gun through them as they were showing as having it in stock. They phoned me the day after to apologise and said it was actually on back order and would not be in the UK for another 2-3 weeks. Rather annoyingly they only work during my working day, and phoning them at lunch time they are always out. So I have emailed them to say I will wait the couple of weeks, but if there is any delay to let me know. Not heard anything back 😕

Will update when I get the gun...

Honestly if you need it within that time span I would take a refund. I was waiting a good two months or so and I was always given time spans of a couple of weeks for everything. If they say they'll call you back, they won't; get them to say when something will be done by then call them when they invariably miss the deadline. Also I found if you called before 1000 or after 1600 no one was ever there.

  13. I had a mixed experience with these guys but it is my belief they are honest if disorganised. I bought an M249 Para from them that stopped working after the first few shots. I got a replacement shortly after this but it was the wrong model so I returned it. It took a long time to get it all resolved and there was a lot of reminding them on my part but this was largely Classic Army's fault as the entire batch turned out to be faulty on testing and then they were out of stock for ages.

Despite the difficulty and the wait I could tell they put an enormous amount of effort into rectifying the situation and I can't in good conscience fault them with anything but bad luck. Most of the problems I experienced could easily have been due to the fact that they were moving warehouse during the time I was dealing with them. I got my refund and I'd buy from them again but if things go wrong, patience and persistence may be required. By all means email them if you have problems, but then immediately pick up the phone and call them if you ever want a reply.

In all fairness I usually avoid them like the plague but they had a Classic Army M249 on sale (£260 instead of £360) so I caved and took the risk and fuck me they delivered.

I got the M249 in good condition besides a slight crack in the stock which I fixed in 5 mins, it also came with a high cap but i instantly threw that shit away and got a box mag.

So far ran it 3 times and gun works perfectly!

That being said I might as well be Robert Patterson cause I am "the lucky one" it seems as everyone else seems to be getting screwed over.

So I probably won't risk it again........... unless they have a £200+ discount on something

Aw man don't say that now I'm tempted by the dark side again. £270 for the Mk2 does seem a really good deal... that said I've previously owned and know of two other lemons so I think Classic Army quality control is sketchy enough (non-existent?) that I'd want to know I'm getting it from a retailer who wouldn't make returning it painful.
